Can You Believe She’s 98 Years Old?
According to the Guinness World Records, Tao Porchon-Lynch is the “Oldest Yoga Teacher” in the world. Tao discovered yoga in 1926 when she was eight years old: “I thought it was a game,” she recalls “I saw a group of boys on the beach making beautiful shapes. When I told my aunt, she said: ‘That’s yoga. It’s unladylike.’ I said: ‘If boys can do it, so can I.'” It quickly became her biggest passion. Now, 98, she still teaches six to eight classes a week. Tao also had 3 hip replacement surgeries, but that didn’t slow her down as well. Arguably the fittest 98-year-old attributes her unbelievable health to yoga which not only trains the body, but also the mind. Her spiritual journey was guided by some of the greatest modern age yogists, including B. K. S. Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois. Recently, Porchon-Lynch collected all of her secrets to boundless energy and released a memoir book.
