It makes me sad to think of how our country has turned out.

I am seeing many comments about corrupt judges and prison businesses in the US. My experience has been very different. I am sure it varies by state and community and I’m sure corruption exists as with any profession you’ll have some very bad rotten apples. But I have worked in juvenile corrections since my mid 20s. It is a state run facility and the only juvenile correctional facility in the state. So any kid anywhere in my state that gets sent to prison (not jail, aka detention, that’s different) comes to me. There is absolutely no push whatsoever to keep numbers high or keep beds filled. I’ve watched our facility decrease in size by more than half over the last decade. We work very hard to constantly be improving the treatment and education the kids receive. So I know we all like to put America in its place so to speak, but not every inch of our justice system is awful across the whole entire country… Hopefully, I don’t get downvoted for having a different experience.

No, but we are a very different culture, stressing individuality and antagonism toward social authority. Unlike most European and Asian societies, we cherish differences (North/South, Black/White, East Coast/West Coast) and there will be people who push against social norms.

As some one who works as therapist in the prison system, I agree. The American prison system is broken as is the judicial system.

Yeah and here in America we treat our hard working tax paying poor citizens worse than criminals as they get free housing, shelter, healthcare, and college education.

There are many inmates that are beyond rehabilitation. They choose to be there bc they can't function in real world, too hard for them to worry a real job, pay bills, etc. If they get out of jail they reoffend to get back in, 3 meals a day, everything done for them. They have their own world in there. You have no idea the depths to which they go. Its disgusting, pathetic, sad and scary. That's not to say there isn't 1person that could be rehabilitated but it is few and far between. That is their lifestyle. Sad but true. Officers have more rules, less rights than inmates who are just looking for anything to file a grievance against officers. General public has no idea what officers go through and at any time could lose their job over some inmate causing trouble. Inmates should lose most every right while in jail. America is too soft on crime and criminals know it and use it.

In all fairness our prisoners are probably vastly different as well. Now whether that is cause or effect is a fair debate. Maybe a little of both.

When Going to college is an option for everyone, no matter what your mother, father, or both combined make, you don't have to steal or cheat or rob or even kill. I mean, can y'all imagine how unstoppable we would be if 90% of us went to college because we wanted to, not just if we could afford it?! Poof, street crime slashed. Poof, drug related theft, robberies, and homicides slashed. Poof, more people that graduate and join the workforce make more money so they spend more money. Poof, the more successful people you have, the more that gets invested into infrastructure, building, which create more jobs! And then POOF! whatdya know? Before long, you've got a self sustained economy. JUST ADD EDUCATION.

Why does the size comparison matter? If there were 49 additional Denmarks, why would Denmark1's prison system suddenly not work in Denmark2?

Ah yes, the good 'ole American excuse of "I want revenge so I'm gonna support a corrupt system that hurts everyone". The punishment of prison is meant to be the removal of your freedom, not to be brutalised, sexually assaulted, left behind by society, and used as slave labor. If the chances of rehabilitation in the USA are so wonderful, why are your recidivism rates so awful?
