Woman Returns A Christmas Tree On January 4th Because “It’s Dead,” And The Shop’s Response Will Infuriate You

Christmas is over so it’s time to take down your Christmas tree… or return it to the shop that sold it to you? A woman has decided to do just that. On the 4th of January, she demanded Costo a refund because her Christmas tree “is dead” and one eye-witness has documented the entire thing. After he shared the ridiculous story on the internet, people can’t make up their minds if the shot responded accordingly or if they’re totally nuts.

To give you some background, Costco Wholesale Corporation, trading as Costco, is an American multinational corporation which operates a chain of membership-only warehouse clubs. As of 2015, Costco was the second largest retailer in the world (after Walmart), and it guarantees almost all of their products with a full refund. Whether she really needed the money or because of some other reason, scroll down to read how the customer tried to abuse Costco’s refund policy and let us know what you think about it in the comments.

I just don't know why stores let their customers have their will - no matter how ridiculous and far fetched it is. They sure can afford to lose these kind of customers - they don't bring in the money, it's the opposite. It's almost like they're stealing from the store. By giving these asshats what they want, it just encourages their stupid behaviour.

Abusing these kinds of policies says a lot more about the people doing it than about the policy, though. I suppose for the employees (seller and managers), it's probably easier and faster to deal with if you can just take whatever and be on your way than to have to argue with the client every time they try to return something ridiculous - which will happen often even if the store doesn't allow it. Maybe the stores figure it's just easier for everybody, and since it isn't hurting their profits, whatever. The actual percentage of people who do this must be small enough they just don't care.

I also worked at a store (high end) that had a full refund policy. The local popular news anchor would wear her threads on the air and then return them consistently claiming she had not worn them. How stupid can you be? All I'm saying is that no matter what income level, there are people out there who openly cheat the system and eventually ruin it for everyone else. If this lady was that hard up for cash, I doubt she could or would have bought that tree in the first place.

This is why we seen all these bizarre warning labels on things. Just like that little packet inside shoe boxes that say "DO NOT EAT". Yup someone tried. Now we will start to see signs on real trees. "Tree will die in time."

Unless Costco sold it to her planted in the pot, the tree died when it was cut down! She is returning a tree that she claims has died when in fact it was dead when she bought it. I'm going to try this with one of Costco's roast chicken! I'm going to return it on the basis that the chicken hasn't laid any eggs!

Although I absolutely agree that we should always see people's reasons before condemning, and that such a huge company hardly cares about these incidents (probably why they keep the policy that way, even if apparently so many abuse it), why would you buy something so superflous as a huge natural Christmas tree if you were really so pressed for money? Maybe it's because I'm not American and a Christmas tree is much more of a big deal there that she just had to have one (though all the posts about creative trees people made because they couldn't have a "real" one make it seem otherwise), but to me it definitely doesn't seem like someone in real need of money would do. Specially in a store that requires a membership to shop at.

You are 100% right - I can tell you that as an American, there are all sorts of financial pressures around Christmas, but a massive tree isn't one of them.

I doubt she was in dire financial need since she had enough money to buy the tree, in the first place. Live Christmas trees aren't cheap, these days. Some people just have no ethics. Sad, but true.

From a business perspective, this is small change. Costco knows the lifetime value (LTV) of their customers and maintaining a strong customer-friendly refund policy most likely helps increase both the onboarding of new members and the overall LTV of their customers. Refunding this person (who might be on the lower end of the LTV curve) only reinforces the message that Costco takes care of their 'members' and gives other members and potential new members confidence that they will be treated well, especially if they have any issues. The viral nature of this story - is basically free advertising for Costco. For what it is worth - I think it is sad that people would shame this person if they are returning the tree because they need the money. We do not know the full story.

you must be joking. there's no way we can excuse this person (assuming she was sane). if you need money, you save money, you don't spend it on whims and desires. and if you are a decent human, you would be ashamed of such greed. whatever the full story, what she did is very bad and sets an awful example.

Percentage wise, this return is insignificant to the Costco profit margin. And the lenient return policy gives us confidence to purchase more feeling safe, which increases sales, so it really does work for a major retailer like Costco, and definitely for us as consumers. However, all returns like this are linked directly to this “customer’s” membership, and eventually she will be denied membership. Trust me, this kind of behavior has repercussions in every aspect of her sh!tty shameful life, and Costco isn’t hurt in the least by that tree. Sleep well tonight knowing that she cannot. 😁

These stores need to have a stricter return policy and stick by it. A customer like this one is not one you need in the long run. The customer is NOT always right. Stop refunding people items like this - what happened to common sense? I think it died in 1980 - just saying!

A person I know used to buy her kids jeans at Sears, because they would take anything back. First she would use the jeans on her boys, then her sister would use them on her boys,. Ff anything happened along the way they returned them for new ones...even when the boys grew. So basically they only paid for the original pairs of jeans, the 5 boys got free jeans from there on out... no wonder Sears is going under.

Sears definitely isn't going under for their lax return policy. The CEO mismanagement and the awful Shop Your Way program is the real reason.

Long time ago I used to work for a department store. They had a very lenient return policy, but people took it to the ridiculous! We had a lady that repeatedly would come in on a Thursday, buy table linens, dishes, glasses, flatware etc. Then return it all on Monday. We all knew that she was having dinner parties, but nobody ever did anything about it. I also worked in the shoe department for awhile. Had all kinds of bizarre returns, but the best one was a lady who wanted to return a pair of shoes that were so worn, the sides were blown out and it wasn't something we had sold for years. She said that they just didn't fit right. She claimed that she had paid $50 for them and wanted that returned. Our policy was that without a receipt you got the last known price. I couldn't find them in our system at all, had to get a manager to calm the lady down and eventually gave her $2 as the refund. Some people!

I've never been to a store - as far as I''m aware - with a "take back in any condition policy". Usually if it's not in a condition to sell again, it's not in a condition to take back.

Also, I see a few people in the comments saying things like "maybe the woman desperately needs the money!" I say to that, I support all sorts of social help for low-income people and families, but god damn it, if you desperately need to budget, and you buy a tree, it's your own fault for not planning well. Stores shouldn't take back perishable items like that.

One of the reasons companies have such lenient return policies is that they are fear-based. Many are afraid to stand against any situation, because they might lose a customer. A customer who attempts to pay nothing, for unrealistic excuses, is not a customer, in the end. They would be defined, a thief. The corporations running these type of policies, based on fear and people-pleasing, would as a "person" be diagnosed with emotional, and mental, handicaps, requiring counseling or therapy. They would not be a healthy "person", and as we have been learning, a pattern reinforced, abused person, will seek out abusers, until helped, and regains a healthy mind, heart, and self perspective. Consumer-culture abuse of providers will continue to be nurtured in the mammonistic buy and sell cradles, until the bow breaks; in my near future mind, I can hear the lullabies turning to shrieks already!

The one that actually gets hurt the most by these lenient policies are the manufacturers. Costco (and most other retailers with similar policies) will simply ship the returned items back to the manufacturer and then take a full credit for the wholesale cost of the item off the manufacturer invoice, often charging the cost of shipping to them as well. When the manufacturer is a small business (like the one I worked for), they will be more likely to agree to terms that are heavily in favor of the retailer just to get their product in the store.

When she bought the tree it was already dead! I believe the reason they have such an easy return policy is because they can afford it. It takes 10 times more work and money to get a new customer than to keep an old one, no matter how wacko, happy. The stores write this stuff off, so no biggie for them. But karma rules in the end, so no matter how this plays out, I truly feel sorry for people who are so crass. They get their butts kicked big time eventually. I worked for a software company which also had a very lenient policy, but one guy eventually was refused any service because he so brazenly returned everything and we knew he copied it!

I lived in Page, AZ. A very big tourist area, I can vouch for the food returns! People will buy tons of food for their houseboats, after they are done and food is left....back to the store it goes! Full refund on the carts no questions asked and of course they put it back on the shelf. I got sick of buying moldy food from the Safeway and seeing two week old items for sale. I have been buying Costco trees for years and they have always been amazing - except for this year. I certainly know how to take care of a natural tree but mine started dropping a ton of needles right from the start. I filled a gallon sized Zip-Lock bag full of dropped needles two days after bringing the tree home. After calling Costco, they told me that they had received a number of complaints (at least in Illinois) and they instructed me to bring the tree back. I was being totally honest and I certainly was not trying to take advantage of their very generous return policy. They were kind enough to take it back especially after seeing the abundance of needles that fell off of the tree. Granted, I did not wait until 10 days after Christmas to return it, but I appreciated that they believed me and that customer service wanted to make things right. However, even though I was instructed to return the tree, I still received many looks of disgust as I wheeled it into the store. Oh well.

Costco takes all returns and "donates" them to local charities. Those charities can then dispose of the items in whatever manner they choose (give it away, sell it as is or trash it.) Costco get's a tax deduction so they lose nothing. Although with a tree......doubtful.

right before Christmas, I was at the grocery in line behind a man that wanted to return $40.00 of gourmet cheese that he allegedly bought the day before. he had no receipt, and he didn't have the cheese either. Just brought in the wrappers. They gave him the refund. I said to the cashier, "you know he ate it all, right?". She said the store has a "yes" policy and they refund almost every request. I said "great, I know how hosting Christmas dinner is gonna be a lot cheaper." Really?

ok, maybe the stores need to RED flag these people and not allow them to purchase certain items......ie: Cut Christmas Trees, Cut Flowers.....etc., or set a limit on how many items can be returned, or you have until Dec.25 to return this tree.

I worked for Sears back in the '70s. One time a man brought in a child's rain poncho. It had a seam that came unsewed. He demanded a refund. He had bought it several years earlier because Sears had not sold that item for years. The store offered to resew the seam. He refused and finally got a refund.

Costco customers pay for these abuses because the cost of such “returns” must be imbedded in all other merchandise Costco sells. This story and others seem to be confirmed. Costco needs to wake up!

I work at Home Depot. It's the same way there. Someone will buy an item (usually an expensive item) and return the one they had for years. Even though the serial numbers of the item and on the box don't match but they say they just bought it yesterday. We have returns of expensive 5 gallon paint with sand in them or items that contain rocks. We take a large loss on these expensive items and in return the prices go up for honest customers. That's how companies are staying in business. They aren't losing anything because the honest people are paying for it. So sad the world has come to this. What happened to honesty and common morals? It's all about making the customer happy so they will continue to shop there. Who needs those kinds of customers. Blood suckers. The employees take a great loss in profit sharing and bonuses which are earned just by dealing with these people. It's all about customer service and making these shady thieves happy.

I worked in retail my entire life. The customer is not always right and dare I say a lot of the time just dead wrong. Return policies should be enforced. Exceptions , just like everything else, can be made. But to make this a regular practice because you are afraid of loosing business is just plain wrong for everyone. Employees are humiliated and are less likely to listen to people with legitimate complaints. All those bogus refunds are eventually passed onto the consumer in the form of higher prices.

Sure, we don't know this person's reasons for returning the tree. BUT - and I unfortunately know this from personal family experience, there are people out there that feel that they should not pay a dime for anything, and pull c**p like this. We ALL know there's no such thing as a free lunch, or free ANYTHING. Guess who ends up paying for all their goodies? So we get to pay for ours, and theirs. And most retailers let it happen - they just pass it on to their honest customers.

There isn't any doubt about this. The woman was wrong. She is the type of person who makes it so hard to get returns on normal items. She should have been escorted from the store and asked not to return. I hope she sees this and is promptly ashamed of herself. It's called the Disney concept. Where you do what ever it take to please a customer. Many years ago it was good for business. but as time has gone by people have abused the return policies. And have called fawl every time they don't get they're way. So companies have become fearful of being sued or being judged as being racist. No matter what race they are. Just like the small business's that are forced to do business with people they don't want to do business with. Slowly but surely our freedom and pursuit of happiness are going away. And owning your own business, (unless its an internet business) can be lost, by just one person not being satisfied. And abusing your return policy.

I've had people try to return stuff at my shop for odd reasons. " mouthwash tasted too strong", "shampoo not right for my hair" "pills too big", "didn't like the fragrance", " product didn't fix my ooroblem" etc. Every time I take back an opened product, its a loss for me. Got so I told folks the new policy was the first return 100%refund, any further returns from that person would be 50% refund (or replacement of defective product). Had some chronic returners. I think they like to feel " special"!

I happened to be in my local Costco at the end of last January. Shocked to see a line of people with flatscreen tv's on carts, all in the return line. I asked an employee what the heck was happening. He said: "Super Bowl is over." These scumbags all bought a brand new, big screen tv the week before the Super Bowl, watched the game, and then returned the tv. Unbelievable.

Wow, Costco really need to sort out their policies. People are saying that accepting returns on everything is a drop in the ocean to Costco, but surely if everyone buys a new tv before Super Bowl season, and returns them after, when they've been used, that's got to eat into their profit surely? I don't think I've ever been into a shop that has a returns policy other than the "return in an unused and re-sellable condition within 28 days of purchase" policy. I think even if there ends up being something wrong with what you've bought, you've still only got 28 days from the date of the receipt to return it.

Costco doesn't lose a cent. Items are charged back to the vendor. I had an import business years ago that sold items in Costco at the holidays. Got big checks as people bought things, and then every now and then would get charged for an item return, and the shipping to return it to us. Worst was 3 years after the business had closed, an email came into the old business email address stating they needed an address to send an item back to and that they had tried to charge us $20 or whatever it was for their cost of the refund. Good luck Costco.

In the end, we all pay for this behavior. It costs the consumer because the retailers have to build into the price of their merchandise the loss they encure when they take back basically unreturnable merchandise.

Seriously I'm interested in the customers honesty. I'm I terested I. Clothes being brought back to the store that do not smell smoke. I don't return it if it's that terrible. Besides there are a bunch of excuses when the items are brought back without a receipt and without price tags. Corporations making it harder to return items if there being returned within 30-60 days. TO ME ITS TOO LONG OF WAIT TO RETURN And will cause a customer to get a sliding markdown price. And the customers defenitely do not get what they paid for price, since it's being returned within the 30-60 day period. RETURN POLICY IN RETAIL IS MAKING IT HARDER for the consumer to be dishonest no matter the excuse they return any items.

I am working in retail. You would be surprised like this lady trying to return the Christmas tree that is dead. But how about those whom tried to return items that smell like smoke. And claim they have not been used. It's amazing though the company I work for does not refund customers if the shoes they want to return show signs having been used or worn. I'm seriously considering making sure that I return ALL ITEMS WITH PRICE TAGS ATTACHED. AND WITH A RECEIPT.

When I was 18, I worked in a grocery store here in Sweden. At Christmas we have, among other things, ham. Not a couple of slices for your bread, but huge (think size of turkey) ones eaten with lots of compliments. The week after new years eve, an old lady came in to the store. She wanted a refund because we had sold her a bad ham, and she had it with her as proof. It was 1 slice out of a 8 (or thereabout) lbs ham. Bought a whole month earlier, at the turn November- december. When questioned where the rest was, she and her guests had eaten it. To this day, I dont know if she was senile or just trying to pull one. She didnt get a refund even when she had us fetch the manager.

There are always a few customers who abuse this policy. Overall, COSTCO's "no questions asked" return policy is a boon to customers and the company. For myself, I am willing to sometimes pay more $$ at COSTCO than I would pay online at Amazon since they completely stand behind what they sell.

This is why these stores wind up closing 1500 or more stores in a few years. Or why people are being replaced with DIY checkouts because they can't afford the employees when people are returning these items. I blame the stores, Christmas of 2016 my husband bought me one of those robot vacuums, it was used and all clogged up with hair foam, but it was sold like it was brand spanking new at Target, husband said it even had the security thing on it. We had to return it back to them, I am sure they put it back on the shelf too.

There were like five 100 light strands all tangled up. The clerk didn't even check to see if they would light up. You could plainly see they were old and very used. This is deplorable on both ends.

Sue happy and most times we're happy as hell when you go back home. Something like that old movie, "The Ugly American". Now we're just as bad north of the 49th. The people who demand these refunds for the most ridiculous and despicable reasons are why those who are honest with their requests are looked upon as just another fool trying to get something for nothing.

I use to work at a grocery store in the floral dept. The store had a policy that you didn't have to have a receipt to return good meat or flowers. In the flower dept. this man would take the old flowers out of the dumpster and return them for money. This went on for a few weeks but then the store put a limit on how many items you could return without a receipt. Good move.

I deal with these types at the fast food establishment i work at,i cant disclose which store it is and where its at due to policy, but we have a return policy that is "if the customer says its wrong, replace it,no questions,no receipt, dont ask for names" and we lose so much money to it but we cant do anything because of our classist franchise owner wants his money. my point is that there are people in this world who choose to be this level of trash especially when they dont have it that bad. they dont care. the problem starts with the policy. and it also starts with "the customer is always right" when we all know that they are stealing. pathetic people who try to get over on you and your store because they want to,not because they are poor and struggle, but because they are trash.

That’s ridiculous! However in regards to the mattress the mattresses sold by Costco have 10 year warranties and the consumer is told to go back to Costco that they warranty it and will return it t the manufacturer. When one pays 1000.00 for an item that fails in 3 years and has a 10 year warranty I don’t blame them for exchange it/ returning the item. There is a lot of abuse but most customers are reasonable and do not return ridiculous items .....at least I hope they are sensible!

No clue they contributed to the store closing... stores need to stand up and not give in too these people. Like Brigitte said they are stealing , call the authorities!

I think that some people do not understand the theory behind accepting these kinds of returns. If the customer had a bad experience and wants to be refunded or return an item, not getting the return means they are going to bad mouth the business and tell their friends, their family and so on which does impac the companies bottom line. If they have a good experience you will almost never hear about that. So to avoid the complaint you give the refund and hope that keeps them quiet. We have a retail chain where I live called Meijer. They have a pretty decent return policy with some specific requirements. So there is some complaining but the story can point to the policy which is posted all over the store for justification for not issued a cash refund or a payment back to a CC or debit card. Sometimes all you can get is a refund on a store issued cash card so you can only spend the refund at the store.

DA Marshall I think most everyone here understands that. The thing is that if merchandise returns were a corporation it would be a billion dollar industry - like a Fortune 500 company! In order to offset the fraudulent practices of this nearly 300 billion dollar industry (if we're looking at it as a company still), stores must increase prices and reduce costs which means reducing jobs. In the end, this is bad for our economy. In addition I personally have seen people steal items and return them for cash to buy drugs on these "no questions asked" policies when I worked in a store. It's bad for us all.

I work for a pretty big furniture store, and we have a pretty decent return policy. You should see the lengths people go through to save/get a buck. Trying to return things they bought 5 or 10 years ago, things that aren't even from our store, or things that are covered in disgusting substances. So I would like to say I am surprised by this article, yet I am strangely not.

Worked for a manufacturer for years. All and I do mean all returns at retail are returned to the manufacturer or destroyed and deducted as defectives. The retailer may also give the customer additional money for various reasons that are also charged back to the manufacturer. Part of the cost of shelf space.

I do believe this woman had al lot of nerve. But, some stores have lenient return policies to earn customer loyalty. It pays off for them in the long run. I have a friend who bought a coat at Nordstrom's. It wasn't an expensive coat. Twenty years later, a button broke, but the coat was still in great shape. She went to customer service just to see if by chance they might be able to get her a replacement button. They said they couldn't and offered to take back the coat. She declined, but became a loyal Nordstrom shopper.

Returning items and products you are not content with should never be frowned upon. This is whats good about our country. Other countries, you can't even return a product once its purchased thus making it worse for consumers. BUT these should be exceptions. People buying and returning out of season products should not be returned. Target and Wal-mart does this as they state it in receipts and notes on the products that Halloween costumes, Easter baskets, Valentines heart shape pillows and Christmas ornaments for examples are all holiday products and cannot be returned once holiday is over. Returning this tree is just disgusting. It's like returning a salad bowl after it just expired within 3-4 days. You just dont do that.

These places definitely need to wise up on returns, if not, hell....let's all do it! Otherwise it's not fair to the good people!

I worked in retail for 20 years and saw a lot of this. I got really good at figuring out who was trying to pull a fast one and would call them out on it. Shop refund policies are far too lenient because of consumer rights, statutory rights and "the customer is always right" and the general public will try it because they can. Also some people have the craziest sense of entitlement. My biggest annoyance though, was as a department manager, I often dealt with customer services, refunds etc and it would drive me up the wall when people would bring something back that was well out of warranty, used, unboxed and no receipt, I would refuse the refund for those reasons, they would get annoyed and ask for my manager, who would bend over backwards to refund the customer. Why do that?

I had aBBQ that was 15 years old. I went to store to ask for customer service number do I could order replacement parts for the ones that had rusted. The fellow at Costco told me yo return it. I said no, I just want to order and pay for the replacement parts. He once again said to return it. The following week I was there with the BBQ and got a full refund. Not ashamed, I tried to replace the parts but they insisted I return the 25 year old BBQ. That is costco policy!!!!!!!!

I work retail, and our store takes anything back, especially seasonal, after they use the item, just to keep good customer service. These people know how to work the system and get away with it. When you have all these returns, it hurts your profit margin. Then they have to cut our hours.

Imagine Costco's surprise if things like this were done en masse, I think they'd change there policy if 500 or 1000 or more showed up each day at each of their locations trying to do the same thing. Doing such things sets a precedence.

Many big box stores have such liberal return policies that it's common to see people bring back items they've used for months, and ask for refunds when the season is over. Fortunately so few people are so obnoxious, that this doesn't become a major problem.

I worked at Wally World (Wal Mart) we gave refunds to people that brought in dirty, worn, old socks. We gave a refund to a person whose air-conditioner was dented, rusted and covered with blood. We gave refunds to people who'd search the garbage cans for receipts, and claim someone "stole" their items.

I haven't heard her side of the story. Was this tree sold at the location or online? Maybe she had it shipped to her and it started shedding all of it's needles right away? But she had already decorated it or they didn't have time to return it then? And this guy had the nerve to take her picture? Geez dude, it's Costco's decision to accept the return, mind your own business! It's not unethical to return something if it falls within the return policy. Costco has the option to tighten that up but they choose not to. Christmas trees are expensive, that's why we got a fake one long ago, it's just not worth it unless you want to have the whole tradition of going out to the Christmas Tree farm and cutting it down yourself, having them net it and tie it to the roof.

So I have done a few things in returns over the years with Costco. Once I bought a large number of precut and packed fillet minion style tenderloins for a rare get together of a bunch of friends. I cooked them, we ate them, but they were just not normal. They tasted fine but were tough even though they were medium rare to medium. I came back with the receipt and they refunded my money. Their response means I bought more stuff from them later. Does that make me bad because we ate all the food and asked for our money back anyway?

You know what infuriates me more than this? People that cut down real tree to place in their living room for a month and then throw them away. It takes years for a tree to grow large enough to use as a christmas tree. The more trees that are cut down, the less oxygen there is and more greenhouse gasses are in the atmosphere. And some of those same people are complaining about global warming. Producing plastic trees also harms the environment, but not nearly as much as chopping down a real tree. Not to mention the fact that you could be taking away a cute little animal's home just so you can hang little glass baubles on something in your house. Ridiculous custom that needs to be stopped. You can enjoy christmas with people instead of with a tree.

Have you ever seen a Christmas tree farm? The trees are planted in rows, and as each matures enough to be cut, another is planted, so that on an established farm, there is never any bare earth. Smart growers vary the variety of evergreen from row to row so that they lessen their risk of losing all of the trees at any given time to blight or bugs. Evergreens are resistant to most things, but there are a few that get them - and there's no point in using chemicals on them, because they flat out don't work. .... The ONLY environmental complaint you can have about that industry is the cost and carbon footprint of shipping them all over the country. Most come from either Oregon or Michigan. Wild trees are NEVER CUT for Christmas trees.

We look at this and think "how cheap of them!" but we are talking about a multi-billion dollar company. they aren't hurting for sure. Only people this effects is the lady who returned it and the poor workers who have to figure out what to do with a dead fire risk of a tree. so is it shity they returned this tree and actually got a refund? kinda.

Because it reinforces this stupid behavior. And then stores change their refund policies to the disadvantage of honest people.

I worked at a Kmart ten years ago and they took back everything, no questions asked. People would steal from Walmart then bring it back to us. Needless to say, that is one of the reasons Kmart had to close so many of their stores.

When she bought the tree it was already dead! I believe the reason they have such an easy return policy is because they can afford it. Despite their reputation for low prices their markup is still HUGE! There is rarely a good honest sale to be found. But what are we to do? Return our Christmas tree??? SAD!

People will buy tons of food for their houseboats, after they are done and food is left....back to the store it goes!

Got so I told folks the new policy was the first return 100%refund, any further returns from that person would be 50% refund (or replacement of defective product). Had some chronic returners.

I used to work on returns for a well know mail order company, I was used to Christmas trees being returned well after Christmas, the excuses varied but I remember one which said no longer required, I honestly cannot believe the nerve of some people, then again we were stupid enough to refund the customer.

Now that I know Costco has such a liberal return policy, I've got to load up my half eaten boxes of crackers, cheese and other food items and get them back there asap. On my way out I'll pick up a few more crackers, cheese and other food items to replace the ones I brought back.

I hadn't saved the receipt but had been told that they can check your purchase thru your card, well it didn't work for me. They said I didn't buy it there, which I knew I had, told me to return it to the mfg. I just let it go, didn't argue over it. It would've angered me to witness this fool get her cash back!

I was behind a lady in Walmart years ago who slapped a huge wad of very tangled Christmas lights on the counter, said they didn't work and she had " just bought them" and the clerk told her to go get new ones. There were like five 100 light strands all tangled up. The clerk didn't even check to see if they would light up. You could plainly see they were old and very used. This is deplorable on both ends.

Nothing surprises me anymore and we in Canada are getting just as bad as our American counterparts. Used to be a time when a visitor to Canada was an American.

I work retail, and our store takes anything back, especially seasonal, after they use the item, just to keep good customer service. These people know how to work the system and get away with it. When you have all these returns, it hurts your profit margin. Then they have to cut our hours.

Surely you have better things to be indignant about. It's called customer service and perhaps their policy is to treat their customers with dignity rather than assuming the majority are out to gouge them. What's your investment in that transaction?

So I have done a few things in returns over the years with Costco. Once I bought a large number of precut and packed fillet minion style tenderloins for a rare get together of a bunch of friends. I cooked them, we ate them, but they were just not normal. They tasted fine but were tough even though they were medium rare to medium. I came back with the receipt and they refunded my money. Their response means I bought more stuff from them later. Does that make me bad because we ate all the food and asked for our money back anyway?

I bought a mattress at Costco, after a couple years I couldn't sleep on it anymore. It was sagging and became soft instead of firm. I should have returned it

Wild trees are NEVER CUT for Christmas trees.

another story with things to see on all sides. Maybe she did need the money? maybe she was just a money loving cheap skate. Maybe she was dared to do it. Maybe she was forced to. We look at this and think "how cheap of them!" but we are talking about a multi-billion dollar company. they aren't hurting for sure. Only people this effects is the lady who returned it and the poor workers who have to figure out what to do with a dead fire risk of a tree. so is it shity they returned this tree and actually got a refund? kinda. Is it a lack of morals tho? eh, debatable.

Nobody knows her story. Terrible person? Maybe. But maybe she just needed money to feed her family, and this was one way she was trying. We don't know. But I'm more annoyed by the Moral Police out there that have to photograph everything and put it of Facebook. Also, he spelled "shamed" wrong. If you are gonna be a d**k, at least use proper spelling.

I'm not dissing you, just honestly want to know as I'm not even American. How would she help feed her family by buying and returning a Christmas tree? Is there some information I'm missing?

That is EXCEPTIONAL customer service! What they are doing is actually genius. Believe it or not, this WILL generate more sales for them. These people are now going to go tell others what a great store Costco is.
