Recognition comes in many forms. One of which is being trusted with responsibility. And after supposedly spending years in her grandpa’s company, Reddit user ScallionTop7000 wanted it more than anything.

However, when the man passed away, his will revealed it wasn’t going to happen. While her male relatives were assigned important roles and shares of the business, the woman was excluded from any significant involvement, receiving neither a leadership position nor a stake in the venture. As she claimed online, all because of her gender.

    This story is indicative of the broader picture

    The Western world is moving forward. In 1999, only three large public companies in the US were headed by women; ten years later that number increased to 15.

    In 2023, women held 10.4% of leadership positions at Fortune 500 companies. (There were a total of 52 women running businesses on the Fortune 500 list, an all-time high.)

    ADVERTISEMENT

    But at that time, women represented around 58% of the US workforce and only held 35% of senior leadership positions.

    Image credits: EkaterinaPereslavtseva/Envato (not the actual photo)

    In 2023, a majority of Americans (55%) said were too few women in top executive business positions. Americans see many factors as to why this is, such as:

    • Women having to do more to prove themselves than men (58% say this is a major reason);
    • Gender discrimination (50%);
    • Family responsibilities (48%);
    • Many businesses not being ready to hire women for these positions (43%);
    • Sexual harassment creating an environment that makes it harder for women to succeed (40%).

    And people aren’t very optimistic about the future, either. Half believe that even as more women move into management roles, men will continue to hold more of these top positions.

    While you might agree or disagree about the elements contributing to this disparity, one thing is clear: sadly, merit alone is not always enough to break through corporate or, in this case, even familial barriers.

    Literally not your business. And advisedly not your family either. It's now a poisoned chalice. Let them keep 100% of not very much. Consider starting your own business.

    What a bunch of åssholes to treat OP like that. There are some really good advices in the Reddit comments. Personally I'd start my own business with the skills I learned there, and keep in touch with the employees I had a good connection with, in order to invite them to come work for me. And then watch the old ship sink, with the entitled misogynist captains aboard.

    I’d be tempted to reply, “I’m just a woman, what on earth would I be able to help you strong, capable men with? Surely you don’t need a mere woman’s help with a clear man’s area like business? My mind is fully focused on babies, after all”. The only people currently in that company I feel bad for are the employees. I genuinely cannot believe the men in that family - did they get stuck in the 1700’s? Bless, OP - I hope she starts a rival company and poaches all the employees.

    Honestly, I question the veracity of the will. But, as it stands, let it burn to the ground. I wouldn't even consider coming back without a large portion of the company and majority control to guarantee they don't screw her over again... but, again, let it burn.

    Absolutely not. Use your experience to get your foot in the door some place else, use that same ability to claw your way up as you already know how. Become a boss. Let the misogynists burn on the pyre of their own self-created misfortune. Even if you go back, once you fix their mess you know they'll just step in and get rid of you. You are nothing but a tool for them to use. Move on and remember the best revenge is living well.

    What century are these total jacka$$es living in (including grandfather when he was alive, of course)? When you were working for the company I hope you were appropriately compensated for all the various responsibilities you handled , for your value to the company, for your rôle in its success. & Now the crybaby men are failing miserably & want your help thru this "rocky patch." You said they'd never give you any % & don't want to pay you. Even if they gave you the most generous compensation package you could dream up - including the 51% ownership some posts recommended, they'd continue to be trouble & thorns in your side. Same thing if you came to an agreement on how much you'd be paid as a consultant. Because they have no more respect for you than did your grandfather, which is paradoxical since they need you & you're in the power position. I expect they're even intimidated by you. But they want your expertise for free, as a favor, & of course pulled out the "family" card. In addition, they've called you foolish & childish - are they too stupid to understand insults would only push you further away from wanting to help them? Please don't even consider being involved with them or the company 8n any way. The skills, knowledge, & experience you have will qualify you for much better jobs. When you go to interviews, take a copy of the will in order to show you were, basically, forced out of the company by a bunch of misogynistic idiots - if you'd not left, your life would have been hell, working with these men. Tell them you aren't interested under any circumstances & cut off contact with them . You'll be happier with a new life including a job where you're respected - & paid.

    Is this a recent story? Who still behaves that way? And can't she send the will into probate, especially since he put the blatant sexism in writing? She has proof she ran the company, how can men still do this nowadays? If you leave a single child out of the will, that child can contest it. I'd do it, and if I won, my family members wouldn't even be janitors.

    Apparently, the will has already been probated since the men are running the company. She could have contested it while probate was still open, maybe if there was any indication that grandfather was subjected to undue influence from one or more of these male geniuses, or could have sued the estate, but the outcome surely wouldn't have given her controlling interest in the company. She could now sue the company but I can't quite come up with the grounds. Not wrongful termination since she wasn't fired. Hostile workplace? I expect a good wills & estates attorney, in conjunction with one specializing in employment & labor law could figure out something (costing her $$$$$$) but it would seem she might want to just close that chapter of her life & move forward.

    She was raised up in the company since she was 16, practically ran it while the grandpa was sick but she has to work retail now? And her grandpa, a business owner, didn't use a lawyer to draft his will, he wrote it himself? Yeah, ok. This all sounds real. And if this is how the man really felt, why even bring her into the fold or let her run it for two years during his illness??? Doesn't make sense.

    I feel really badly for your circumstances and the betrayal from the family (all of them) but if you can look at the bright side, you started learning the business 12 years ago, full time for 10...that's a TON of first hand experience and it will carry over to any job. This just makes my blood boil, and I'm a man. I am incredulous and deeply horrified that casual misogyny like this still exists in the "civilized" world. And on top of that, how could OP ever possibly doubt her situation to where she had to ask AITA? I am in agreement that the best justice would be for her to start a business competing with Grandpa's, hire away all their experienced people, and put it out of business.

    Starting a competing business is not wise. It's wrought with legal trouble and will only continue the confrontation with her family. Does she need a stigma and bad rumors following her around for the rest of her career? Life is not a novel or a movie. Best course of action is to take her expertise and knowledge to start something new. If she was as indispensable as she described, then she will be back on her feet in less than 5 years and have enough money to be independent from her family. Proving she didn't need to be given a handout to be successful.

You're going to go places!

    I'd actually laugh at them! I'd say, "I'm just a lowly woman, how could I possibly be of any help to you big strong men. I'm sure you'll figure it out, or not. Either way, it's certainly not my problem anymore. Good luck!"

    Id 100% start my own business and take ALL the employees that wanted to come. Sink it and leave them NOTHING. And while you set up their end agree to "consult" for around 15k an hour. To be paid up front.

    I love how they think calling her foolish for not making them rich is a valid argument.

    I don’t think I would help them. But I suppose if they wanted to give me in writing part of the business, I would consider coming back on.
