Mom Pulls Her 7-Year-Old Son Out Of School After Teacher Asks Her To Sign His Homework
A South Carolina mother drew criticism for unschooling her seven-year-old son after going viral for slamming her child’s teacher for being on a “power trip” after she required a daily dated parental signature on homework.
Kelsey Rhae took to her TikTik page on April 18 to post a video where she unleashed some frustrations about her son’s school.
- Kelsey Rhae, a mom of four, opted for unschooling her son after a dispute over homework signatures.
- Kelsey criticized the education system in a viral TikTok, claiming it aims to create workers, not thinkers.
- Backlash and debate ensued as the mom shared her approach to unschooling, focusing on real-world learning.
In the now-viral clip, which has amassed 1 million views, Kelsey filmed herself saying: “If you have a child in public school, I would like to know what your opinion is on this because I don’t think that I’m in the wrong.”
She continued: “You already know that I’m pulling my first grader out of school.
“I’m going to let him finish out the school year, and then we’re going to be doing unschool.”

Kelsey went on to assert that she wasn’t a “homework mom,” highlighting the fact that since children spend seven to eight hours of the day in school, they should be doing “that sh*t* there and that when her son is home, they’re “spending [time] together, not doing homework.”
The angered parent acknowledged that she was “hard to get a hold of,” noting her lack of engagement with the school’s communication app and stressing teachers should be calling her instead of texting her.
Kelsey then recalled a day when her son came home from school with a form to sign, annoyed at the fact that the teacher had not informed her directly.
Upon learning that she was to sign her son’s homework every day, Kelsey told her child that she wouldn’t be doing that as it was “not beneficial to [him] at all.”

She explained: “I have four kids, and I run a massive business through social media, I don’t have time.”
The South Carolinian recounted her child saying that he would not get a “fuzzies” if she didn’t sign it, to which the mom reacted by saying that he wouldn’t get punished for something she wouldn’t do.
Nevertheless, her son came back one day revealing that he had only received “one fuzzies and everyone [else had] five.”
Kelsey admitted that her son wasn’t perfect and that she had been called to the school before as a result of him being disruptive and the “class clown” before stating: “But now he’s being targeted, and I don’t like that.”

The TikToker ended up calling the school’s principal to demand her son be moved to another class for the rest of the year.
Despite asking for viewers’ opinions, the mom had turned off the comment section of her video, writing in the caption: “I DID NOT EXPLAIN THE SITUATION OR MY FEELINGS CORRECTLY.
“I do have time. I do answer all of her messages. I am active in his education.
“SHE DIDNT RELAY ANY INFORMATION TO ME ABOUT THE PAPER & it turned up with 2 months left of school.
“Instead she is sending passive agressive messages through my 7 YO.
“Not all teachers are bad & I know they are only doing what they are taught. I get it.”

Fellow momfluencer Tobie Sunshine replied to Kelsey’s video in a clip shared on TikTok on April 19, captioning it: “Then she doubled down and then made an apology at 2x speed but all videos are still up.
“This is why teachers are leaving.”
Tobie started her video by exclaiming: “The whole video is absolutely bonkers.”
She went on to criticize Kelsey: “You want to unschool your kid at home, but you can’t, you don’t have the time because of your social media business to sign your child’s homework?
“Dude, get your priorities straight.”
She later uploaded an apology video, attributing her frustration to systemic issues within the education system

The content creator remarked that it was because of parents like Kelsey that so many teachers were quitting teaching.
“How hard is it for you to sign the thing so your son can get the prize?” Tobie asked before she added: “All you have to do is sign the freaking paper.”
On the same day, Kelsey uploaded an apology video on TikTok, where she said: “I think I owe an apology to all the teachers.”
She continued: “It’s not the teachers’ fault. It’s not the teachers that I’m even mad at.
“I genuinely think that I am just upset with the system.
“I do not like public school.
“I just believe that it is ruining our children, and now, we have different beliefs.”

After acknowledging that most teachers were likely “doing the best they can,” she asserted: “The system is designed to control and create workers, and I have no interest in creating a worker out of my child.”
Kelsey added: “I have interest in creating a creative thinker, somebody who can figure problems out.”
The mom-of-four later revealed that she didn’t really care if her children followed the rules before clarifying that she did have “plenty of time to spend time with [her] child.”
She further explained: “For me to sign the paper, it wasn’t even that I don’t have time, it was that it was insignificant, and it wasn’t benefitting my child at all.”
Her decision to unschool her son rather than homeschool him sparked discussions about parental involvement
@thekelseyrhae Replying to @user1624005965783 another reason why most people choose public school because they dont want to put in the TIME TO BE MORE PRESENT. Dont be scared. Youre super capable of leading them yourself. #unschool #homeschool #homeschooling #unschoolingmom #theunschoolmom ♬ original sound – Kelsey Rhae
With the comments section being available this time, a viewer wrote: “No teacher thinks the system is perfect.
“What is completely flawed is the lack of parental support and willingness to collaborate.”
Another TikTok user commented: “I am a teacher who LOVES her job. The system sucks.
“We do our best. My goal is to create thinkers and independent learners,” to which Kelsey replied: “I appreciate you.”
A person asked: “Did you ask the teacher why this signature loop exists?
“And is it just for your son or the whole class?”
The same commentator added: “To me, it sounds like an accountability mechanism: the teacher wants you to know what was assigned so you can be involved in his education and ensure he’s making time for it, even if ‘while at school.'”
Someone else penned: “The best advice I have for parents who just don’t get it should sub for a week in classrooms. You will understand then.”

On April 20, Kelsey announced in a separate video that she had spoken with her son’s principal, as she captioned the clip: “I’m prepared to take the heat. Bc I know so many other parents feel the same way I do.
“I’m sure y’all will find some way to drag me in these comments too.”
The irritated mom confessed: “Sometimes I just be having an attitude, I’m human and it involves my kid, so I’m gonna be a little spicy.”
Kelsey didn’t reveal what the conversation with the principal entailed, but that didn’t prevent viewers from expressing their negative reactions, as a person commented: “My parents literally didn’t speak English & still made time for my homework.”
An additional viewer wrote: “How is signing homework a power trip?
“Most of the time teachers ask for a signature just so they can make sure you actually saw what your child is doing/working on.”
A separate individual chimed in: “Signing folder = parental accountability. just making sure parents know what’s being covered week by week.”
Kelsey detailed her approach to unschooling in subsequent videos

Kelsey explained in a recent video on TikTok, published on April 26, that she had chosen to unschool her son instead of homeschooling him, highlighting the fact that she didn’t want to teach a curriculum.
She elaborated on her wish to let her child “choose what he’s passionate about” and her plans to teach him by “going out [and] doing activities” such as field trips.
The influencer said that she would teach math in the form of grocery shopping and measurements when baking.
Moreover, Kelsey detailed the use of an unschooling organization she had paid to help her with legally pulling her son out of school
“What about the upperclassmen classes like chem, physics, calculus…etc?” A person asked. “Won’t most of it make the kid be stuck behind a screen again to get those needed credits when they’re older?”
“No, because all you need is a few hours a day for WORK. Then you go OUT and learn. Depends on the parent honestly,” Kelsey answered.
@thekelseyrhae My mistake was being mad at teachers for simply doing their job. That is not the type of person i am. & dispite your 2 min look into a glimpse of my life, im a really good mom. Considering i once was NOT. My platform is to just share my journey. Simple as that. 🖤 #unschool #unschooling #whatisunschool #homeschooling ♬ original sound – Kelsey Rhae
On April 30, Kelsey filmed her first day of unschooling, showing in a new video the kids cleaning her car, which she affirmed was her way of teaching them “hard work” and “taking care of the things you love, that you need.”
In the video, she explained that her unschooling lesson of the day was also taken during grocery shopping, where the family would “learn about reading labels” and do maths through spending money.
“In my house, we call this “running errands and doing chores,” a viewer commented.
The fundamental difference between homeschooling and unschooling is that in homeschooling, the school is transferred to the home, with all its elements, West River Academy explains. In contrast, unschooling is based on natural learning, and there are no subjects or evaluations but life.
According to Unschooling Mom2Mom, unschooling is a legal form of homeschooling in the USA, but it necessitates adherence to individual state homeschooling regulations, which vary widely in requirements, such as testing, paperwork, and contact with educational authorities.
Kelsey’s videos continued to stir controversy

Wow. She admits her child causes behavioral problems, the teacher requires all parents to sign the homework form, and yet feels her child is targeted? No, the teacher is trying to make sure that you’re informed. She’s trying to partner with you. This isn’t a power trip. This creates *more* work for her. She has to buy/plan all those prizes, keep track of who has a signature (for 25ish students), print off those forms, and contact parents. She probably doesn’t have time during school hours to do all of this (plus teaching) during her one hour of plan time and call this parent. That teacher would have to do it after everyone goes home. This is why she texts. This mom needs to sub in a school. Her child’s teacher and her child needs her to be a partner and instead she’s pulling him to “unschool” him.
This parent says she wants the teacher to communicate with her but doesn't really. She wants the teacher to chase her down with phone calls (which I suspect the mom would either decline or get annoyed with). She doesn't actually care what the signature represented or what the teacher's workload is. She says she wants the kids to be "creative thinkers" so her unschooling project is to have them clean her car. I doubt she is going to put any actual effort into "unschooling" and, frankly, the bar for what constitutes unschooling is so low it's on the ground. The novelty of having her kid underfoot is going to wear off as soon as she clicks 'post' on her latest video attempt to shift the goalposts on her self-justifications.
Load More Replies...Looks like she loves attention, and found a way to get it. I feel sorry for her kids.
Was all this because she didn't want to sign the kids homework? She didn't have to grade it or correct it, just sign it? That's 2 seconds if your day and one is for finding a pen.
“I have four kids, and I run a massive business through social media, I don’t have time.”.... then perhaps you shouldn't have had 4 kids if you don't have the time to parent them
No "influencer" has a "massive" business. If it's really that big, hire some help so you have two seconds to sign your kid's pap.
Load More Replies...Imagine having enough time to make videos to bad-talk a teacher, but not enough time to sign a form.
And also somehow having time to homeschool your kid
Load More Replies...Back when I was in elementary and middle school (late 90s to very early 2000s), we had to get our planner signed every night. This isn't new. She just wants attention.
I remember having to do that every day. Come to think of it, I don't think anyone ever used the planners for anything aside from getting a parent's signature before class each day.
Load More Replies...Notice the whole video was about her, not the child. not what they are getting from the school and how they are doing in class. but about her. her time, her 4 kids, her very important influencer b******t job. WOW. I feel so so sorry for those kids and I hope the school calls child services on her.
Anyone who "runs a massive business through social media" gets no sympathy from me, especially when they see that as more important than their child's education.
Yeah. That massive social media business she runs is definitely a MLM.
She isn't capable of teaching her kids anything, she can barely articulate a coherent thought in sentence form. She is absolutely willfully ignorant. Ignorance in and of itself is not inherently bad, it simply means you don't know or fully understand something-everyone is ignorant about something. Willful ignorance, however, is a horse of a different color. That is ignorance born out of the desire to NOT learn or understand something, the belief that you shouldn't have to and sheer arrogance that comes with a whole lot of self-derived ego stroking. She does NOT "run a massive business through social media", she just thinks she does. She buys likes, clicks and follows, ftr, she uses multiple services to purchase them like buzzoid, mediamister, iginstant, and countless others that provide what they, falsely, claim is "real followers" and "real engagement". It's actually just a bunch of programming and fake profiles, btw. (I know, because I've literally worked on the programming).
"unschooling"? What is that? Where I live, schooling is mandatory for every child til 18 years of age. The municipality keeps records, so if a kid does not turn up at school and the parents cannot provide legal documents that it follows another type of education that will end in an diploma/certificate, they will have to appear in court.
I think it's just a stupid influencer way of saying homeschooling. There are requirements in every state for homeschooling. She's going to be in for a rude awakening the first time her kids need to pass an assessment to prove that they are being taught at least the minimum requirements for homeschooling. Especially since she thinks making them wash cars and go grocery shopping is an adequate replacement for school.
Load More Replies...She's an a$$. She needs therapy to address the resentment she harbors against teachers and maybe any authority figure that asks her to pull her justified weight in the process. I feel sorry for her kids because this is the mother they'll have for life.
I like having the papers. It keeps me in the loop,I can physically see what my kids are working on. It gives me an opportunity to engage with them about a day they've had totally without me...it bridges the gap and I'm all for it
She has time to do her hair & make up & do her TikTok videos, but has no time to sign her kid's paper. Bless her heart.
"I run a business on social media" So, you're a parasite and you hate your kid?
Meanwhile the teachers in that school are dancing with joy because she is gone. It's probably a school requirement that the homework be signed, because it shows that the parent is keeping up with what the child is learning. Oh well, lady, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
TL:DR - "I don't think its fair that I have to acknowledge what my kids are doing. Why can't they just raise my kids for me?" Why is it too much to ask a parent to spend less than a minute signing their name? They don't even have to ask the kid if they need help.
OP sounds like the worst kind of person; I feel so sorry for her children, being saddled with an "influencer" and being neglected unless it's for internet clout and sympathy. Literally nothing she described from the teacher was out of line. I was homeschooled and I appreciate the hard work and time my parents put into it; that is not a path every parent and child can or should take. Like others said, if OP is "too busy" to even sign a piece of paper once a day for her child, how does she expect to teach him at home?
I am not usually the grammar police, and we all make mistakes. However, if someone uses whose instead of who is or who's should probably leave the educating to the professionals. She is not entirely wrong about the homework for small children being pointless, but she goes about addressing it in a highly offensive manner. She also comes off as a neglectful parent who is too busy doing other things to parent their child.
A lot of times the homework for small children is to help them memorize the basics that they have to know in order to do the more complicated things they will do later in school. It may seem pointless but the "drill" part of early education is very important. Just my 2 cents :)

Sven Grammersdorf - What, exactly, are you people not getting here? She's not talking about homeschooling, but unschooling. Homeschooling is teaching the children the courses, while unschooling is just having them go about the day doing chores (i.e. grocery shopping, cleaning, doing laundry). Unschooling is supposed to teach them about life, but not practical things like math, english, etc. Got it? It's just lazy parenting.

That kid... If they someday want to create big buildings or other infrastructure... I don't think just doing basic addition and subtraction will do... If they want to study other subjects that requires a basic fundamentals they probably won't be able to do it... And kids generally get easily distracted and just play -.- And still at 7 years old... Writing and reading could still use some work
As am ex teacher I hate homework. I never had all my students complete it, it was a battle trying to explain the necessity of it. I encourage them to complete any unfinished work from the day and to read ahead, those who want can explore the subject further. I got much better compliance after that. Kids need to be kids after school. Homework stops kids being inquisitive in the subject. But that parents is a bit unhinged she's doing her children no favors by her reactions... poor kids
I knew a kid whose mother thought she knew better than the teacher. He could barely read (he wasn't special needs) but his mom made excuses for him and thought being angry about someone's suggestion she take parenting classes was a better use of her time. He's an adult now, and in the prison system.
I'm just astonished that Bored Panda uses the word "unschooling" without quotation marks.
Sounds like what she calls "unschooling" means "my child isn't going to get the academic material because I'm too busy making videos, and won't learn the necessary social skills, such as following procedures and being accountable for actions or lack of".
Unschooling is legal in USA. Wow you guys rellay love your uneducated slaves. That said, I'm also annoyed when teachers give me homework and that its not done in the 8 hours my kid is there, but it is what it is.
I would have to have more info because I, too, have seen this problem before. I have listened to students say “we walk into class, the homework assignment is on the blackboard, and when we ask questions, the teacher says to ask our parents”! Now, that may not be “normal”, but it DOES happen in some classrooms! And … I have ALWAYS had a problem with homework EVERY NIGHT! Some learning has to be done in the classroom.
BrokeDog - Just because children have homework doesn't mean that the teachers aren't teaching in the classroom. Homework is to reinforce what was taught in the classroom.

Amy Watkins - Who can't get past that you focused on that instead of the crappy parenting of the mother?
