Wedding planning is often an interesting journey, but when you throw in a pregnancy, things could take a more interesting turn.

Today’s Original Poster (OP) made a decision to embrace her pregnancy on her wedding day. However, that didn’t sit very well with her mother, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law. Worse, they made sure she was well aware of it.

After a lot of jabs from them, the author’s husband stepped in and asked them to leave if they wouldn’t respect their day

It caused a scene, and the author was accused of ruining the wedding; now she’s wondering if she was wrong for wearing the dress

The OP and her husband had planned their wedding long before, so when she got pregnant, postponement wasn’t an option for them. They would still go ahead with the wedding despite her being nine months pregnant. In fact, for her, celebrating her wedding and pregnancy was a double celebration.

She chose an outfit that would embrace her pregnancy— a fitted dress. Her husband also loved it and thought she looked great. However, this dress choice horrified her sister-in-law, mother-in-law, and even her own mother.

They believed wearing the dress would be “disrespectful” and “attention-seeking,” convincing her to wear something looser or even avoid walking down the aisle altogether. Despite their criticism, the OP was determined to celebrate her day her way.

On the big day, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law arrived in dresses way too close to white. They spent the morning gossiping about her, with the mother-in-law accusing her of making the day all about her and her unborn child.

To the OP’s disappointment, her mother sided with them again, insisting she wears a shawl to “tone it down”. When the OP and her husband refused to cave to their antics, things got worse at the reception. Her mother-in-law and sister-in-law cracked a cruel joke about her “popping” on the dance floor.

Her husband stepped in and asked them to leave if they wouldn’t show any respect. This then triggered a meltdown, with her mother-in-law accusing her husband of betraying his “real family”. Her sister-in-law burst into tears, and her mom stormed out while claiming that the OP had ruined the wedding.

Even after the wedding, the drama didn’t end. Her mother-in-law began badmouthing her, her sister-in-law took to social media with passive-aggressive posts, and her mother demanded an apology for her disrespect.

This has now left a deep rift in the family, with her husband’s family taking sides and her family largely rallying behind her mother.

Planning a wedding can typically be overwhelming, with high expectations and pressure from family and friends. Perfect Union suggests that boundaries are very important when planning a wedding to manage stress.

For this, they recommend that couples should communicate their personal limits and decide who will be involved in different areas of the planning as it helps filter out unnecessary noise.

And how much more when the bride is pregnant? According to The Birth Boss, being a pregnant bride can bring criticism as they may not exactly deem you “worthy to celebrate”, but it’s important to recognize that their reactions say more about them than you.

“There’s no shame in it!” their website states before recommending that focusing on the love and support around you on that day is key. This is because, during pregnancy, it is important to protect your emotional health.

Balderman Wellness touches on family conflicts during weddings. They explain that conflicts often stem from “mismanaged expectations, inappropriate or explosive behavior during the wedding” however while the resolution may take time, an apology remains a powerful tool in mending relationships.

Netizens stated that the OP was completely justified in standing her ground. They also praised her for embracing her pregnancy on her wedding day.

They condemned the in-laws and the OP’s mother for overstepping boundaries, disrespecting her personal decisions, and causing drama on a day she should remember forever for good things.

The OP just wanted to enjoy her day and embrace her pregnancy. Was she wrong for sticking to her choice, or should she have compromised for the sake of family peace?

Netizens rallied around her in support, emphasizing that it was her wedding day and she did nothing to ruin it

She's having twins so there's no hiding that bump even if she wanted to. She might as well embrace it. I guess the mean girls couldn't stand someone else being the center of attention.

I'm curious how a shawl would cover and 9 months twin bump - unless she's wearing a tent, I'm pretty sure people will clock she's up the duff. Time for these two to move very far away from both their families.

People really do get their drawers in a twist whenever any celebration celebrating a woman actually centers the woman. The three women who should've been supportive were the biggest misogynists in this whole scenario, and they are weaponizing that internalized misogyny against a newly married couple starting a family because they had the nerve to do the wedding their way, a wedding they paid for. Heaven forbid a woman feels special on her special day and feel beautiful in her pregnant body.

I am willing to bet all my posessions and my left nut that this is due to cult programming. As you said they hate themselves probably because were too weak to break out of that programming. All of that is invalidated if they see a memeber of their family be free. Thier lives wasted under those cult rules would be for nothing... So they have to drag them down else it was all for nothing... Good on her and her husband for standing strong! ps: THIS behavior! Is exactly why i have never been confortable with the use of the word patriarchy... I would say these "traditions" and distorted norms and sex roles are the equal result of self hating and controlling men and women. I think we need a new word for these digsuting phenomna... Yeh it was a woman teacher in our islamic ethics cource we had as kid who told us the highest calling of a woman was to be "pure" and that for a man was to be the instrument and willing to do the ultimate "sacrafice"... She LOVED yelling at me when i questioned the crazy b***h... I was 12 btw...

Something just feels off about this article, I'm not sure if it's the OP or the author of the article. All through the OP's post she refers to her "child," which implies one baby, but then at the end says she forgot to mention she's pregnant with twins. She mentions the dress looking nice over her bump, but there's no "bump" when you're 9 months pregnant with twins, not even close. The reactions of her mother and MIL are beyond unhinged and seem so out of place. I fully support OP, she has the right to get married in a string bikini if she wants! More power to her. I just have a feeling there's more to this story. Or less.

As she was carrying her pregnancy most people might think in the singular. So she clarified twins to give us an image of her bump. And what do you mean there's no bump with twins at nine months? Everyone definition of bump size is different, and you can't know how big or small the twins were at the time.

It's weird that there'd be someone close enough to get a wedding invite that wouldn't know she was pregnant at this stage I. The pregnancy. Should be a surprise or the talk of the family because of a dress. Besides, what dress could hide twins? She would have just looked like she was dressed as a tent to obviously hide her stomach. Same folk would gossip.

Pretty sure this story is fake. A wedding usually is planned in advance, yet they decided to go through with it, even if she was pregnant in the 9th month with twins or might've given birth already. What would they do, if she gives birth the day or even week before? Do their wedding with a newborn?

Weddings and births can really bring out the crazy in families because they disrupt existing power dynamics. This a double whammy. So what should OP do? She should assert her power. She needs to tell her mother to button it or she won’t be seeing her new grandchildren. Ethan needs to do the same with his family. No arguing or persuading, they shut up or they are out.

Wow, when did it become the norm to dictate the traditions of a wedding where the couple planned and paid for everything themselves? Yes, the bride is very pregnant. What did both families expect her to do, terminate her pregnancy in order to "save face"? If this is how they behave now, I don't even want to imagine how things will be after the blessed event. I hope OP and Ethan give both families an ultimatum: either genuinely apologize for their atrocious behavior, or forget about ever having contact with the babies. Then go NC with the lot of them. Nothing less than an apology will be acceptable. Any action from the "flying monkeys," and legal action WILL be taken. Sheesh!

They are bullying you and you're being told to compromise? No way. They can live the rest of their lives not ever seeing the babies if that's the kind of behavior they think is ok.

Maybe I'm too young to get this, but was pregnancy ever a taboo subject? Like, why were Op's MIL, SIL, and Op's OWN MOTHER being so nasty about the bump?

Sheesh!

I guess they expected her to be a virgin and she and the fiance were living together in celibacy until the wedding night?

This whole story seems so fake to me. There are so many inconsistencies throughout, and she even misspelt her supposed husband's name in one update.
