Some people just looove talking. Like your auntie Betsie who just created a FB account and floods it with posts on chemtrails, or that entitled anti-masker who believes wearing a face covering impinges on their rights. Or many other loud ones on social media who can’t miss a chance to spread some misinformation on drinking bleach to prevent COVID-19.

But the world is the place of karma, and if there’s yin, there’s always yang. That means that if you throw some nonsense out there into the world, it may come back and hit you like a boomerang.

To show you how it works in practice, Bored Panda compiled a mesmerizing collection from the witty subreddit called “Murdered By Words.” It’s a prominent corner of the internet entirely devoted to put-downs, comebacks, and counter-arguments.

Being in an argument, whether voluntarily or not, is one of the most emotionally draining situations you can get yourself into. It raises your blood pressure, and you may feel trapped by the opponent trying to prove their point no matter what.

It gets even more frustrating when the person you’re arguing with is proving a point that, in your eyes, doesn’t make any sense to begin with. Whether it’s anti-maskers, anti-vaxers, flat-earthers, or conspiracy theorists, anyone can have their own opinion, but as such, everyone can stand up for their own beliefs.

Luckily, there’re some tricks you should know to winning an argument. According to Susan Krauss Whitbourne, a professor emerita of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, you should start by knowing your facts.

“How many times have you made a claim about some piece of trivia only to realize, as soon as you’ve made that claim, that you’re completely wrong?” Such a situation doesn’t lead you anywhere and gives your opponent a straight shot to winning.

Seeing other person’s perspective may also help you in an argument. “You don’t have to agree with a foe in order to see his or her perspective,” says Susan.

“However, if you want to win an argument, you do need to be able to see the world the way your opponent does. Stepping into the mental set of those you argue with allows you to figure out what’s influencing them.”

If you figure out what’s triggering the person you’re arguing with, you can direct your focus there and showing a little empathy never hurt anybody.

And the third thing is to remember that “Becoming defensive is one of the worst ways to win an argument.” Letting your opponent see that you've dug into your position with no other alternatives may lift the argument from bad to ugly. Moreover, if you let the other person realize that you’re open-minded, even if you're pretending to be, the argument may resolve itself.

Thanks for the Jewish perspective! I have seen the first one so often, but the second one is a very new perspective. Thanks for the share!

That is the perspective of the Reform movement in Judaism, not Judaism overall and as someone Jewish is loaded with errors including the person in both parts of this literally ignorant on Hebrew where very different words than what they claim are uses. I even dealt with it in another post here https://www.boredpanda.com/wrong-translation-of-bible-homophobia/?comment_id=5215484

I checked this one out and, unsurprisingly, that definition is disputed. There's also other context from elsewhere in the bible to suggest that, unsurprisingly, religious people have always been homophobes. What did Christ think? I don't know and I can't ask him - and neither can anyone else. All I can say is that he 'drank wine with the sinners' So those who were considered sinners under Judaism were people he wanted he befriend and help, my guess is he probably wasn't a homophobe..

It does not translate as child molester. It translates as boy “molester”. Nobody in the Bible gave a s**t about raping girls.

There is in Deuteronomy..something about ..if a man raped an engaged woman only the man is to die for the woman has done nothing to warrant a sin...

If Jesus came today and we didn’t know it was him, and preached in churches, most so called Christians would chase him out.

Except if you go to that reddit, someone gave a whole history lesson and Hebrew lesson and that outed as being totally ignorant on Judaism. Just because someone is Jewish doesnt mean they know anything.

Taking advantage of children (in any way) is sinful. They were grooming these boys. Disgusting.

And I think it was Sodom where when the mob was banging at the door asking for their men, they tried to give them their women & girls. Nice.

New Testament (not Gospels though) also bans homosexuality. But it was written in an ancient Roman Empire, when the most common homosexual behaviour was old rich men grooming teen boys, as written above. Author of said words couldn't have known that there will be time when real homosexual relationships of equal partners, who knows what would he thinks of those? So I think Christians shouldn't be so strict to gay people. After all, there are many places in the Bible that basically say: mind your own bussiness.

Must be reform because that is not what the other denominations think. Reform is a 230 year old movement, hit its peak 100 years ago and is on the decline. They deny god wrote the bible, support altering translations from the original Hebrew, etc. Speaking as a Jew with a graduate degree and studies Jewish theology for 13 years professionally, I can say most of what he is saying is pure BS.

12 years of Catholic school, attending Mass every morning during first period, not once did we ever actually read the Bible, though we got tested on memorizing the catechism.

The first is wrong, since Leviticus is most likely to have been mostly composed during the Babylonian Exile, when Greece was a bunch of city states, battling the Persian Empire, and the Jews in Babylon would have had little to no contact with Greeks. So that explanation cannot stand. Moreover, it says not to sleep with a male (זָכָר) as with a woman, not a boy (terms such as נָעַר). The reasons behind the prohibition are obscure, and run from a prohibition on breaking gender roles (cross-dressing is also prohibited), to prohibition of specific non-Hebrew religious rituals, to the possibility that the text had been changed much later to fit later religious ideas, and actually was either added or even changed from a different prohibition.

As for the second, all that the Bible says is that the people were very evil and sinners. The main sin that is being shown is the mistreatment of guests. In fact, the Jewish mythology states that their main evil was not helping the poor and passing laws prohibiting the feeding and hosting of travelers and the poor. A city reacting with outrage and sexual violence to three guest at one house does imply that the treatment of travelers was not normally pleasant.

that thing about greeks being ok with older men having sexual relationships with younger boys is a load of bullshit. In ancient greece one who did that was called a kinedos (κιναιδος) and it was considered a crime. In Athens in particular laws were passed that schools were not to open before sunrise and close after sundown, and that visitors in gymnasiums (where young people worked out naked) was very limited. Don't forget that Greece and particularly athens was a wealthy and powerful state, and propaganda of this kind was used against them.

Reminds me of the Cyanide and Happiness comic, where the gay couple says "Only God can judge us!" And God's sitting nearby, holding up a "10."

Look, look, look. You can downvote me if you want, but I’m only saying this: I am all for homosexual rights and anti homophobia, but it’s only fair that there are multiple translations of the Bible. You might be right, you might be wrong. However, if you’re wrong, you’ve used religious text to back up your ideas, which is tacky and blasphemous. If you’re right, I’d recommend not taking the internet as your theology (study of the Bible), but actually going in-depth and reading books if you want to understand more. That’s all, thanks.

Now I maybe miss-remembering this but didn't the Greeks separate the genders for a good portion of their history? To the point where your first sexual experience was with your own gender and you didn't really have contact with the other gender until you married. It wasn't until the Romans came into the picture that sex with your own gender was considered dirty/wrong/morally corrupt? (To be clear I'm not saying that being LGTBQ2+ is dirty/wrong/morally corrupt but that it was the view of the Romans historically) Also wasn't Sodom destroyed because the men of the city found out the angelic messengers where coming and planned to rape them. So the angels destroyed Sodom for attempted rape?

U know what would even be better? NOT getting advice from a book written by an archaic society. As he said:“deeply rooted in the time and place“. That time and place is long gone. And by the way: having sex with a 17year old is not pedophilia! And last but not least:I find it highly unlikely that a 17 year old was considered a boy or a child tow millenia ago
