The last time Texas was this cold was in 1989. With temperatures falling to below -10C (14F), the state's power grid failed, as it could not cope with the demand for electricity. Rotating power outages have been put in place by the grid operator to reduce the demand, leaving millions of people without electricity.
At least 23 people died in the storm or its aftermath.
Millions of people remained without power on Tuesday and were planning for another cold, dark night in the wake of the deadly storm that swept across the southern and central parts of the United States this week. In many of these places, such devastating conditions arrive just once in a generation.
By late afternoon Tuesday, the storm was making its way into eastern Canada, but the damage left behind was severe. Bored Panda has compiled a list of photos to help you to understand how it has affected the area.

Texas Game Wardens Rescued 141 Sea Turtles
Texas Game Wardens assigned to Cameron county rescued 141 sea turtles from the frigid waters of the Brownsville Ship Channel and surrounding bays. The sea turtles were transported via the PV Murchison, operated by Sgt. Game Warden Duke and B/M Bowers-Vest.
At least 23 people have died since winter began unleashing its fury last week, some from the cold and some from attempts to escape it. And almost four million customers across the country remained without electricity on Tuesday evening, according to PowerOutage.us, which aggregates live power data from utilities.
More than 3.5 million of those outages were in Texas. There, many people had been without power for hours or even days in freezing temperatures. State leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, expressed criticism of the operation of the state's power grid, and the Texas House speaker announced a legislative hearing looking into the widespread power failures.
My Parents Let The Dog Go Outside After The Storm. These Are The Resulting Footprints
Experts have begun to analyze what could have been the key factors behind the grid failures in Texas. It looks like record-breaking cold weather spurred residents to crank up their electric heaters and pushed demand for electricity beyond the worst-case scenarios that grid operators had planned for.
Simultaneously, many of the state's gas-fired power plants were knocked offline amid icy conditions, and some plants appeared to suffer fuel shortages as natural gas demand spiked nationwide. Also, many wind turbines in Texas froze and stopped working, although it's worth mentioning that this was a smaller part of the problem.

Some people, however, manage to find some joy during this struggle. Damian Syrianos, who is originally from Sag Harbor, NY, found himself in the middle of the havoc in Texas too, and he found a nice way to make the best out of the whole ordeal—he attached a rope to a car, hopped onto a snowboard, and went on to have some fun on the white streets.
"This is typical for me to do in NY when it snows with friends but not typical in Texas," he told Bored Panda. "I believe the last time they had this much snow was 1986. So I had to take full advantage of it, especially with plenty of experience to back it!"
"The storm hit us pretty hard, for Texas—I've been through much worse with fewer issues. The state not being prepared, shutting off power, and not having any plows to clear the roads so we can go to the grocery store are all huge issues, but I just took advantage of it and went snowboarding."

"So far, I haven't really left my house in 4 days other than to go to the grocery store," Damian added. "But there is a positive note. This is the first time I, an 'essential worker', don't have to go into work since COVID started!"
Coming back to snowboarding, Damian said it was amazing: "There was no one else driving around so no issues, got some sweet turns in and a whole lot of smiles.
"I'm a Greek-American regenerative farmer that's just starting out and looking to help the community in many ways. Hoping to put a smile on people's faces in any way I can," Damian explained.

Throughout the state, the National Guard has been deployed and 135 public warming centers have opened up to provide people with an escape from the frigid weather, although Covid-19 precautions remain in effect.
In Harris County, which includes the city of Houston, health workers scrambled to distribute Covid-19 vaccines as freezers lost power and backup generators failed. The county had to hurriedly administer 8,500 shots of the Covid-19 Moderna vaccine, which must be stored at temperatures between minus 13 degrees and 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the USDA, Texas is the country's third-largest citrus-producing state behind California and Florida. Dale Murden, president of Texas Citrus Mutual, a trade group that represents the interests of citrus growers in the state, told AccuWeather that growers were "about 50% harvested to date on grapefruit," when the brutally cold weather hit early this week, and were "just beginning to harvest our late Valencia orange."

That's actually a brilliant idea. I'm in Florida where it is currently 34 degrees Fahrenheit. Not freezing anymore, but I have pictures of ice yesterday.
"Most everyone saw temps of 21 degrees for several hours," Murden, who also is a grower, said. "We will no doubt lose some of the crops as we are seeing some ice buildup inside the fruit."
According to Murden, when temperatures dip below 28 degrees and stay below that mark for five hours or longer, the fruit that is still on branches begins to freeze on the inside.

Public transportation authorities in cities like San Antonio are modifying bus schedules, and in some cases, even pausing them altogether. Jeff Arndt, the chief executive of San Antonio’s transit authority, VIA, told the Guardian that informing riders of the changes to public transportation – like suspending all bus services Sunday evening and operating a weekend bus schedule on weekdays – will be a difficult challenge.
We can handle the logistics of getting people in and making sure the buses are fueled. It’s really getting the information to the customers," Arndt said.

But nothing in the history of Texas compares to February 12th, 1899.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in the state occurred at Tulia in Swisher County in the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. The thermometer dropped to 23 degrees below zero. However, there were unofficial reports that were even colder. Low temperatures of 30 degrees below zero were measured that night at Wolf Creek and at a site southeast of Perryton, both in Ochiltree County in the northern Panhandle. This cold air spread throughout the state with reports of a thin layer of ice coating most of Galveston Bay.
In fact, many Texas cities established all-time record low temperatures In February 1899.

Texas Knew For Years Power Grid Was At Risk But Did Little About It. Unbelievable

but what if you can't scream and ur already dead?
Load More Replies...A Texan Panda checking in - we had a storm (not THIS bad) 10 years ago; this DOES happen. ERCOT chose not to winterize its equipment, because that would have mean spending money. Anyone wondering why the grid isn't being repaired: the repair equipment is frozen too.
Correct. Wasn't a matter of if, but when this would happen. Greed and negligence to blame here. Sound familiar (pandemic...)?? BTW, been w/o power for 50 hours now. Thanks ERCOT.

Now they are blaming frozen wind turbines which provides only 20% of Texas' power supply. They are blaming green new deal. Texas Gov. says green new deal will bring more of this.
America's entire infrastructure is s**t!! We aren't ready for any super natural disasters!!! We got a lot of catching up to do!! We're on the bottom!!!
It's because our GOP politicians don't want the federal government "in our business". So we have our own power grid. Apparently our grid was minutes from complete collapse. Profits and money were put over the people. They've known that this was going to happen back in 2011 and did nothing. It's time for the Republicans to be voted out. Ted Cruz abandoned us and none else wants to take responsibility.
20% of their power is Wind and Solar. Panels covered with snow and the wind turbines froze.
Load More Replies...That would mean smaller bonuses for politicians and feet vacations etc.
it's crazy that they didn't plan for situations like this. is that not the requirement of the government? i hope this knocks some sense into them.
Texas resists all regulation. That's how you end up with this.
Load More Replies...It was all about the profits. That's why they didn't want to be part of the federal grid. To get around regulations that would have require them to do regular maintenance that would have prevented this from happening but that would have cut into their profits. Welcome to the world of Republicans that want smaller government, few regulations and have corporations in charge.
The worst part is that it's happened before. This is what deregulation does.
.....I doubt it; it all depends on voters, which are not always smart.
Load More Replies...WELL, the windmills froze, the solar panels were covered in ice/snow and didn't work.....back to carbon power.

Load More Replies...Look for more of this in the future kids as Big Govt and the greenies force fewer fossil fuels and more frozen windmills and snow covered solar panels. Brrrrrr
There are windmills in Antarctica and they work, I read. The "Big Govt" is taking steps in the right direction; fossil fuels are not the way to go anymore.
Load More Replies...Windmills if they aren't backed by fuel energy, are treasonous, lack of wind, too much wind, or cases like this..........Did somebody thought what would happen with solar energy if we had another Krakatoa case? I really think that they are too many people that have their brains installed in their gluteus and spend the whole day sitting in an office.
Sue, green energy is in its infancy, it is said it needs to be backed up by nuclear, many more problems need to be solved, but fossil fuel is not the answer.
Load More Replies...Myth: Texas deserves this for pushing gas and coal so much. Fact: Excluding hydropower, Texas produces twice as much renewable energy as any state in the union, including California. No state in the union is as dependent on renewable energy... not by far. Natural gas electrical production was hit, but not nearly as badly as their renewable energy. In fact, Texas produces 1/5 of the nation's renewable energy. So, yes, Texan power companies decided that rather than to invest in upgrading carbon-based systems, they would spend heavily in developing more modern, green systems.
And from what im hearing it's because the companies decided NOT to spend the money to winterize equipment. When you play cheap, you get cheap results. Plenty of cold areas use green energy & dont have this issues, but like i said...

I could stop heating for a week with -10°C and would still have no freezing temperatures in the home...everything else is a waste of energy!
Insulation costs money and that means they would not be able to afford large McMansions. Insulation is not seen and displays of Texas greed is visible.
Load More Replies...Sadly this could also happen in reverse, for example where I live (Edmonton, Canada), we are getting out of a 2 week cold snap (where some nights without windchill were near -40C (which is -40F as well)). Should we see +40C (100F) temps, our grid might not be able to keep up with running more A/C units etc etc. As our homes are built for the "cold", central gas type heating with a furnace etc etc. Let's hope everyone gets through this situation safely, and with a new appreciation for the beauty and danger of snow/cold.
They are not used with this weather. Even if the puppies are happy, they dont have the infrastructure for this, and im sorry for this. In the same time I remember the heatwaves and the reaction from Texas, however I like to think they now got their own medicine. Hope all of them are ok, there might be differences between Europe and the USA but hope it wil be ok.
As a Texan who is going through this (rolling blackouts, complete power outages, many areas now on boil-water notices or without water at all, grocery stores without food or water, pharmacies closed, hospitals having to move patients because they relied on water for the boilers that provide their heat), we would appreciate it greatly if those of you so inclined would pray for us. We have the most inept government in the nation, pointing fingers every which way except at themselves and not doing much of anything to help the situation. Could use the National Guard with drinking water, with snowplows, with food, with blankets. It's a nightmare, y'all. And if anyone of you thinks Texas "deserves" it for whatever reason, well ... bless your heart.
Wow, huge amount of misinformation. Rural Texas here by Jacob's Well. We don't have snow plows or sand trucks. We have people in charge with their own agendas-1% who don't care about the rest of us. And no I did not vote for them. And yes we are going to do everything we can to get them out of office. Instead of making fun of people who think 95 is a cool day in summer, help us solve the issues. I read today where a neighbor was begging for water with a bucket because they ran out. My 91 year old parents are a 3 hour drive from here and have had no electricity for days. Mom is heating up water for tea in the fireplace and using it to cook dinner. My stepdad is diabetic and had dialysis last week. Hopefully he can get it tomorrow. My son and family have no electricity with a 7 and 9 year old. My daughter and family have no electricity or water with a 2 year old, 9 and 14 year old. My 80 MIL is without electricity. We have power but no water. Help. Send water. Please.
We have temperatures like that every winter, like last week. We have infrastructure to deal with it like snow plows etc. I think the biggest problems that Texas has are, despite getting low temps every few years, no insulation on water pipes and a dreadful power grid with no safety measures. So just a lack of preparation because it would've cost 'too much' All the risk is borne by the individuals and all the profit taken by private companies..
Everyone, regardless of where they live (I reside in the UK) should have some emergency supplies. I have electric heating back-up to my gas supply and vice-versa. My stove runs on gas and oven on electric. I have enough food in the house so that I don't need to go out for weeks if the situation arose. The only thing I do not have is bottles of drinking water which I intend to sort this week. I also have a camp stove that runs on propane that I could use in the garage. Climate events like this are only going to happen more frequently in the years ahead...
I am hopeful for the post showing hundreds of out of state people turning up with trucks, snow ploughs and shovels, warm clothing, generators and food supplies. I want to see homes making sure the elderly in their areas are ok, take them into other homes so they are not alone and scared... and I especially cannot wait for the post where every bbq pit master in texas gets together a dozen or more in each zone and they do huge cooks for all, getting people together sharing warmth and doing what we are sure they are already working on.
I never saw trucks, no food, just cold. People were raiding houses with guns looking for food and supplies. Neighbors were shooting each other in the streets.

i'm in texas and the most annoying thing isn't the snow. its the electricity. it shuts off every 1 hr and turns on every 1 hr. like i'm here watching a movie and suddenly all the lights turn off. so basically everything connected to electricity shuts off. the fridge, the tv, the xbox, the wifi router, the lights, it's a pain. only good thing is that school is cancelled.

Load More Replies...Meanwhile, in Texas, people are being told, 'It ain't gummint's job to help you if you ain't prepared for a cold snap nobody's seen in over thirty years!'.... Well, then, what the he** IS government's job in a crisis? Tweeting that people suck, apparently? (See: Mayor Tim Boyd, now ex-mayor....) Yeah, if that's what privatizing your power grid does, I'll *pass*.
I read that Boyd's wife was fired from her job as well. Texas citizens don't seem to display much intelligence when voting for officials.
Load More Replies...It's all fun and games until you realise that this is going to be a recurring thing and probably get a lot worse the coming years. All because of climate changes, all because of stupid humans....
Christmas' high temp was 80°, so my fellow citizens weren't expecting the freeze.
Load More Replies...Poor Texas. This would be a lot more fun for you guys if you still had electricity. Without it, it's just plain miserable.
Nicest comment I've seen about us on here yet. You won a friend. That's how you start a convo about all these political disagreements. What good does it do some European to comment on how stupid the right is? What good does it do for someone to say "serves you right"? Texas isn't "the right" and don't generalize our 30 million people. Thanks for caring without an agenda, Cori.
Load More Replies...Best part of it all: By July, this is a distant memory so nothing will change until the next time Texas suffers another winter.
Do you live here? How does this comment help? Do you need to talk with someone?
Load More Replies...and here i am complaining about shoveling the snow every day in illinois. i'm grateful that we have a plan for these situations, especially because we're expecting another foot tonight. my thoughts go out to texas and i hope your government learns from this crisis.
I know. THE GOVERNMENT DID NOT PREPARE US FOR THIS AND WE HAVE TO SUFFER. (Sorry if you work in the Texas government. It's just that I'm afraid of the dark and fire, and so I can't go to sleep. At least my power is back on)
Load More Replies...Why do people not build properly insulated homes? This would also safe you from having A/C running all the times with the regular summer temperatures in texas.
Load More Replies...As a Canadian I feel terrible for them...they do not have the infrastructure and emergency preparedness for this weather.
okay... but... why there is always water coming from ceiling fans? What's wrong with their plumbing??
In northern climates we would forsee this and shut the water off and drain the pipes prior to the house freezing. These people simply didn't think of it because they've never had that experience.
Load More Replies...Thankfully, my family and I were all okay during all this. It was really rough. Good thing we had 20°F sleeping bags. The animals had a hard time, too.

no one else to blame but capitalism... when infrastructure that should be a monopolised NATIONAL issue becomes the interest of shareholders dividends paid out you may or may not find you in cracy unreal situations alone based on mathematical chance. If the potential payouts take a big cut based on backup for matematical unreal situations shareholders greed and the boards selfinterest kick in. Thou Texas being cut of from boardring powergrids migth be to blame... think again... that might have saved the boarding powergrids ... they might also had gone down if Taxas had been connected.
Us in Canada are MELTING while people in Texas are FREEZING- How the turn tables.
Perhaps now Texans will ensure they have other ways of heating and cooking beside electricity
This is the second polar vortex in two years. The airstream that went around the arctic has developed "lobes" that make it very far south. the climate *really is changing* - expect this to happen most winters.
Now.. maybe y'all will winterize your fossil fuel plants, maybe even your windmills!! Wow, maybe even consider getting the *gasp* government to help y'all out. Maybe hook into the grid. Such long standing arrogance is costing lives now, and hopefully political careers..
everyone, remember all texans aren't the same. politics don't have to do anything with snow. and if you are in canada, new england, alaska, or anywhere else which has cold weather usually, sorry for not being tough guy who can't handle a little snow. i stayed in the snow for a while a few days ago, and when i came back inside everything was pink. plain pink.
I saw a TikTok of someone in Texas whose Tempurpedic mattress froze lol (like the gel or something in it)
pfft it was 40 below 0 (fahrenheit) where I am a few days ago. fourteen ABOVE isn't that bad.
Seems pretty obvious that Governor Abbott bares a HUGE brunt of the blame for this mess so I am sure Texans will re-elect him as per usual b.s. I just hope everyone who has the means to do so can check on their neighbors -- especially the elderly. Make sure folks are staying warm.
i'm in texas and the most annoying thing isn't the snow. its the electricity. it shuts off every 1 hr and turns on every 1 hr. like i'm here watching a movie and suddenly all the lights turn off. so basically everything connected to electricity shuts off. the fridge, the tv, the xbox, the wifi router, the lights, it's a pain. only good thing is that school is cancelled.
Next time you have a chance to vote, pick some individuals that actually have intelligence and are willing to collect tax dollars and spend them on infrastructure.
Load More Replies...at one point canada was colder than the surface of mars. i still had to get up to go to work. suck it up
Yes, it really is like this in Texas and it is fun at the same time it sucks. The snow is great but the power going out every hour sucks
I can relate to most of this as a Canadian. We had a cold snap here where it hit -40 F for most of February. Layers are the key to staying warm.
-40 sucks. That's the point when you feel your eyeballs start to crystalize when you step outside.
Load More Replies...I had a power outage a couple of days ago. I'm afraid of the dark and of fire and so it was hard to sleep. Now we are not allowed to leave the house because of the cold.
I kept thinking, how do they have all that water...then remembered the pipes. Every time I lived up North we lived in trailers and our pipes busted every year but they were under the floor. Hay bales help if you do have a trailer by the way.
Texan here. Surrounded the small well and tank house with about a dozen bales of hay. Worked well. Unfortunately we only bury pipes a foot underground, so that got us when we couldn't run water for several days.

Same here in new england, where we're getting ready for another storm. It was finally getting to a point where every intersection wasnt a "blind intersection" due to snow piles too! A girl can dream right?! Lol!
Load More Replies...Meanwhile in Maine we had an ice storm yesterday that covered the coast in 4 inches of ice and everything is business as usual
And we shut down our state for a 1/4 inch of ice down here! Lol, we are NOT equipped for all of this

Wind power works fine year-round in many european countries. Of course their owners are willing to live with a little less profit and spend money on winterizing their equipment.
Load More Replies...How does this help win anyone over? If anything, you're pushing me away.
Load More Replies...Actually, NO they don't - in fact, most of the states in the South do not have the infrastructure to deal with even 1" of snow. When the temperature in December/January is normally in the 50's & 60's Fahrenheit, you don't need any of that stuff. Do some research on what the weather & climate is like before you criticize how people live in other parts of the world.
Load More Replies...Oh, no - Texas is a RED state. And they run their own power grid separate from the rest of the country in order to avoid federal regulation. This situation, as horrible as it is, it 100% on their state government & the private oil industry there.
Load More Replies...You sound like a horrible asshole. Most people in this state have never seen temps like this in their entire lifetime. They don't have the clothing for it. Many did not know about letting the faucets trickle to avoid freezing. We were not told there would be long power outages, or water shutdowns. Grow a heart and use some critical thinking and stop being so quick to judge.
