Nowadays, many parents share pictures and videos of their children online – in their eyes, they are the cutest little things that ever existed and they want the world to see it.

However, not all parents share such content because of said reason. Some do it for the clout or even financial gain, which was the case with this redditor’s wife. He opened up to the ‘AITAH’ community about having recently found his wife’s secret TikTok account where she would upload videos of their children’s embarrassing moments and even sell them as ‘exclusive content’. The man was seriously concerned, though the mother of his children saw no problem in that and even called him a ‘buzzkill’.

Many children have a digital footprint even before they are born

With so much of our lives being shared online, it’s no surprise that for many people that includes sharing moments spent with their kids, too. After all, the little ones are usually their parents’ biggest treasure, as well as the people they devote most of their time to.

But parents sharing images and videos of their children—often referred to as ‘sharenting’—is a rather controversial topic; while some people see no harm in that, others consider it a violation of the child’s privacy or deem it to be dangerous for other reasons.

According to a piece in Forbes, written by an expert in ethics of future technology, Jessica Baron, some of the biggest risks of sharenting include identity theft, humiliation, privacy violations, discrimination in the future, as well as developmental issues related to autonomy and consent.

Baron suggested that nowadays, a child’s digital footprint often starts even before they are born. Just think about it – pictures of the ultrasound images, videos of expectant parents breaking the good news to their friends and family, gender reveal parties, posts written by proud parents, sharing the exact moment the bundle of joy was born, how big they were, and the full name they were given – that’s quite a lot of information for the world to have basically on day one.

According to a survey from 2010, by the time they hit the two year mark, an overwhelming majority—more than 90%—of babies have an online presence; over 80% of them are already on social media, too.

Image credits:Click_and_Photo (Not the actual photo)

Sharenting can lead to serious detrimental outcomes

A more recent survey—one from 2021—carried out by Security.org found that more than three-in-four parents have shared stories, videos, or images of their children or stepchildren on social media; in these posts, the majority of them (80%) used the kids’ real names.

According to said survey, only a quarter of parents ask for their child’s permission every time before posting their image online; roughly a third of moms and dads don’t bother to do so at all.

What arguably makes things worse is the fact that close to a quarter of social media-using parents have their settings set to public, meaning that even people they don’t personally know can have access to content featuring their children. According to Security.org, it can lead to serious detrimental consequences, such as criminals using sharenting posts for child pornography, digital kidnapping, identity theft, or cyberbullying.

Redditors in the comments under the OP’s post, too, emphasized that his wife uploading videos of their children might lead to certain detrimental outcomes and emphasized that he has to put an end to her actions immediately.

To add another dimension to this, every time one of her kids embaresses or hurts themselves their mum isn't running over to help them or warning them to prevent it, she is letting it happen and filming it! They will at some point find out she is/was profiting from it which then just adds to the psychological impact.

Obviously I also agree with all of the "think about what sort of people buy these videos"comments but I also know I've filmed my kid doing something cute or funny for then the phone to get dropped/video abruptly stopped to help them if they've had an unexpected accident during, I can't imagine filming just to capture that part.

Who does she think is buying videos of children? People without kids don't want to see them and people with kids already see that on a daily basis. She's making money off selling videos of her children to predators, simple as.

This! And I really hope she hide her/their identity/address properly. If one of those "clients" is ever able to talk to the kids, they have enough info about them to pass for a family friend. It's absolutly terrifying.

NTA. Exploiting your children is not "her creativity". Profits from that account portraying the children should be put into a separate account for their futures. Illinois enacted a law this year to protect children of influencer parents, similar to child actor laws. https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/16/tech/kid-influencer-law/index.html

NAL, but I'm pretty sure that in my country it is illegal, even if just because of no-consent and embarrassing, as in willfully destroying the reputation of her kids. Let alone the possible abuse as named in most reactions.

Those poor kids... They're going to be scarred for life. They'll feel self-conscious due to this. I had an uncle that would would use a video camera and record everything we did and then my family would play it back during holidays and it made me feel so embarrassed. I can't stand being in a picture or videos now. I actively get out of the way of cameras.

The husband didn't want her to have an Only Fans account, so the attention whore pimped out her kids. Not blaming him - selling sexy photos online for money and attention would be hard on many partners. There are parents in the sex trade who do try to keep their work far from their kids. That's a far cry from her refusal to shield her kids.

He needs to report her to the police, because if he doesn't when police do trace these photos back to her IP address while they are investigating kiddy porn he will be caught up in tge whole thing. Report her, go to a lawyer and lay out everything to them, get a custody order and restraining order in order to protect the kids. This is very much child exploitation and she will be caught. Sharing pictures of your kids online is one thing but selling them, nope absolutely nope. She is a danger to those children

I am not someone who thinks every minor problem in a relationship should be resolved by leaving, but this is huge and if it's not already illegal to expose your kids like that and profiting off of them, then it should be. I used to follow a comedian, who was downright hilarious and had amazing skits. But after she had her first kid, her videos became more focused on raising him. Okay, fine, lots of parent vloggers out there. But then the videos were all about his DOCTOR's appointments, their "journey" into discovering he had autism and other items. It was unsettling to know so much about this little person who wasn't old enough to understand that they were being filmed and their medical information was being made public knowledge. It's bewildering that so many PARENTS are so glib about their child's information and privacy rights.

Does she not realize that internet content is FOREVER? I don't get why adults think children don't deserve respect and dignity. Those children will remember all the times they needed help and she was there filming and laughing. That's cruel. She doesn't deserve to be a mother at all. She doesn't love her children because apparently money is more important. It's coming at their expense. They'll remember this and eventually go no contact once depression and anxiety hit them.

Depending on the country obviously but in the USA images of minors need to have consent of *both* parents. In some states (IL) there is even more restrictive laws when it comes to minors. the fact she is selling these BEHIND HIS BACK.... dude... divorce if not sue her directly for violating your parental rights. She needs to take those down- and why is she even selling them? That's the part that concerns me even more. With how much can be done with AI, those videos can be deep faked to take something completely innocent and it ends up in CP ring. God people are dumb.

Who the hell buys videos of kids, other than creeps? This mother is selling her own kids to pedos. Not to mention, those kids have no say in content they may not want online as they grow older. That is one sick woman. She doesn't even help when the kids fall down, just keeps videoing? My god.

It's bad enough that Mommy Dearest is literally selling her kids' privacy online. But has she even considered the possibility of there being "buyers" in her area, not to mention her neighborhood? If she were to download an app which pinpoints the number of pedophiles in a 10-mile radius, she would be in for a shock. She is literally setting her kids up to be victimized in the most horrific way. OP is wise in shutting her down. He needs to get his kids out of that situation ASAP, as they could be in danger of being abducted and trafficked.

I feel so bad for the OP and his kids. He wouldn't let her sell herself on the internet so she decides to whore her children instead, Jesus. His response to a comment that she lies is just one more stone on the pile of why he needs to leave her and take the kids. She's a narcissist and one look over and thread with children of narcissists describing their abusive childhoods should convince him to get those kids away from her.

Talk to an attorney that specializes in entertainment law. Parents making money off their children/children’s images are governed by laws set up to protect the children. Most of the money earned belongs to the child with a smaller portion going to the parent. They can also protect the child from being exploited against their will for profit

If you see this OP, PLEASE do something sooner than later. It is too easy to find people online these days and having taught self defense and stranger danger before retirement, I used to check the FBI database every year for the parents talk about missing kiddos. Sadly, the stats have remained the same, here in the United States for over 20 years. 3,000. That's 3,000 kids, under the age of 18 go missing every. Single. Day. In our country. 365 do the math. It's an epidemic but we never hear of it. Yes, that's a DAILY STAT. It's staggering. And parents putting their little ones online?. Only make it easier for predators. Your wife is ignorant. And will be crying hardest on camera. Keep your kids safe!!!

Perverts and traffickers are all watching this content and sharing this with others. It's only a matter of time before someone approaches one of the kids and it ultimately becomes a criminal matter!

There are so many things I'd like to call your wife,75%of them unprintable - others are delusional at best, stupid, monstrous; at worst she knows exactly what she's doing and could be selling "requested" videos of your children. Make sure to alert police, for all you know they may already know of her through the dark web, make sure they know she is SELLING them. Larger forces have depts specifically for this stuff. I don't think they will find these pay-per-view tictocs of young children creative or particularly fun. They are undoubtedly aware of where this kind of stuff can lead, total strangers buy something like these videos for a particular reason. Scary as the thought is, I hope you use a VPN, do any of these videos identify where you live ( background etc) , or the kids names or yours or anything that could lead someone with tech savvy back to your kids?

To add another dimension to this, every time one of her kids embaresses or hurts themselves their mum isn't running over to help them or warning them to prevent it, she is letting it happen and filming it! They will at some point find out she is/was profiting from it which then just adds to the psychological impact.

Obviously I also agree with all of the "think about what sort of people buy these videos"comments but I also know I've filmed my kid doing something cute or funny for then the phone to get dropped/video abruptly stopped to help them if they've had an unexpected accident during, I can't imagine filming just to capture that part.

The husband didn't want her to have an Only Fans account, so the attention whore pimped out her kids. Not blaming him - selling sexy photos online for money and attention would be hard on many partners. There are parents in the sex trade who do try to keep their work far from their kids. Report her, go to a lawyer and lay out everything to them, get a custody order and restraining order in order to protect the kids. This is very much child exploitation and she will be caught.

She doesn't deserve to be a mother at all. She doesn't love her children because apparently money is more important. It's coming at their expense. His wife is awfully naive. I wonder who she thinks is buying the videos?

She knows about only fans. She is not naive. Not some hapless girl... She works as à pedo content creator...

It actually could be considered chip p**n. She's risking her kids for money? And she wanted an OF acct of her own? This all sounds really sick to me.

He has to report this. She can't be trusted alone with those kids. They aren't her kids they are her profit. And it scares me to think of what she will conger up next for money

Me and my wife are absolutely agree that our daughter's face shouldn't be on the internet for obvious reasons. That makes me wonder, how screwed up in the head of a mom who not only allowed this, but is the one doing it. Reminds me of a porn actress who have her dad as her agent...

My god.

This is the kind of thing that should be discussed with an attorney.

NTA Call CPA, get your kids away from her, get a good lawyer, & let her cool her heels in jail where her fan base (child molesters) are stationed. This woman is a narcissistic pimp! If she's so insist on doing her attention-getting hobby, tell her to post herself doing nude yoga!

Holy EFF, NTA. Parents, STOP DOING THIS!!! Your children are not dogs. They aren't property. They have the right to have their privacy protected until such time as they're old enough to make an informed decision regarding consent. We are raising YOUNG HUMANS, and they damned well have rights!

Divorce and get full custody if she violates these agreements of putting the kids on TikTok. She's using the kids for clout. Perverts are getting access to these kids. They're going to hate their mother and you if you do nothing.

I'd get the police involved too since what she's doing probably falls into child p**n.

Only a pervert wants to buy videos of a child wetting themselves. But the a person selling such videos deserves a place I hell; and a jail cell

Mom may think she's selling content featuring the kids thinking it's all innocent fun, but she doesn't realize that there are people out there who have evil intentions towards them!

As a mom myself, this is unacceptable and it's hard for me not to judge OP's wife as a sh*^%# mother for exploiting her own children for profit. This is just awful. The thought of perverts now own videos of their children for no good moral reasons is beyond scary. My heart breaks for the children, they deserved so much better.

They can also locate your children and they can simply disappear. Stranger abduction is nearly impossible to solve. She is a child abuser. You need first consult an attorney for a restraing order and leave that home immediately!
