What’s Your Beautiful, Tragic Wedding Story?
Our tragic, beautiful wedding story.
We met 14 years ago, married to other people. After a few years, I got divorced and moved away. About 6 months later, he got divorced as well.
Happenstance.
Fast forward 10 years, we had not spoken in quite a few a long time, I had moved back closer to the town we now live in. We connected again, he was single, as was I.
“You were wearing a long white cotton dress.”
He lived about 2 hours from me, we set a date to meet up for lunch. He told me he remembers what I was wearing the evening we met. I remember thinking he’s the funniest person I’ve ever met.
Going to the Chapel.
In October, we planned a wedding for Spring of the next year. We picked a venue. Picked a dress.
And then….
December 12, 2019
My mom was diagnosed with Cancer. She was set to begin the grueling treatments.
We decided to move the wedding up. For many reasons. So she would be healthy enough to enjoy it was the main reason.
Chemo and radiation can be just awful.
So, we threw a wedding together in 2 weeks time. December 29, 2019.
December 28, 11:40pm
My brother called to to say mom had collapsed. The EMS were on the way. An hour later we are getting ready to life flight her to Inova Fairfax. She had suffered a stroke. The weather was too bad to fly, they had to intubate her for the ambulance ride. She survived the ride, and the surgery. Now we wait in ICU.
Let’s have a wedding.
They only let 2 people in an ICU room at a time. We got to see her around 8am.
The staff found out it was the day we were supposed to get married.
Without hesitation, they said, well then, let’s have a wedding.
My fiancé and I ran to pick up a few things, my dress, and his suit.
We returned a few hours later to a minimally but beautifully decorated ICU room. They hung lights and balloons.
I changed in the hallway bathroom, and my Dad walked me through the wooden double doors.
As we said our vowels, mom reached up and held our hands as we stood by her bedside.
Mr. & Mrs.
At 3:49, we were married.
The hospital brought us flowers, canapés, and a cake.
Want to get married, again?
We still had the venue, we still had some family and friends in town.
Completely exhausted we drove 2 more hours to get married again in front of everyone else. My Dad and my oldest brother stayed at the hospital.
My youngest brother walked me down the aisle.
At 7:43pm, we were married, again.
If you can’t save her, please just take her.
She never really recovered from the stroke. It took so much away from her.
She passed 4 months later.
She’s pain free now.
It will be 2 years in April.
What wonderful hospital staff! The photo of you both holding your Mother's hand is beautiful! So sorry you lost her, but you know your Mum is no longer suffering. Bless you both xxx
