Someone Online Was Curious To Know “What Do You Wish Hollywood Would Stop Doing?” And Here Are 36 Of The Best Answers
Now that we're presented with multiple streaming platforms such as Netflix, HBO, Hulu, etc., that provide us with different TV shows and movies, it seems that everyone is giving their best recommendations left to right. Now that we have access to an unlimited number of movies, TV shows, documentaries, and other types of visuals, we’ve also become quite meticulous and picky about what we watch and what we expect from creators. One Reddit user @u/MainCrab1383 was curious to know from other internet users and movie lovers what are some of the annoying things they hate seeing on screen, so they asked: “What do you wish Hollywood would stop doing?” The question received 29k answers that stressed various issues in the movie industry.
A lot of us will agree that making a movie is a huge and very intricate project that requires a lot of attention, resources, and talent. Very often movies and TV series are created in a way to appeal to their audience, in some way appear relatable to what is happening in our everyday life. But sometimes all that relatability goes out the window the second we see an actor or an actress pretending to be drinking from an empty cup or driving a car and not properly looking at the road because they're having a heated argument with the passenger next to them. Not to mention “having a main character whose job/income level does not match their home or lifestyle at all,” as noticed by Reddit user @Stellathewizard.
Do you agree with some of the things mentioned in this list or maybe have something yours to add? In that case, don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

Messing up the sound mix so that we have to constantly adjust the volume for music and dialogue.
And, although slightly off topic, that also goes for TV channels that whack the sound up when the adverts come on.
Scenes that are too f*****g dark to actually see. If I wanted to listen to a show, I'd download an audiobook.
Having a main character whose job/income level does not match their home or lifestyle at all
This may sound ridiculous, but here it is:
I f*****g cannot stand characters who are driving and talking to a passenger but NOT WATCHING THE ROAD. They think the same courtesy rules of eye contact apply even when you are a conversant behind the wheel.
YOU'RE DRIVING A VEHICLE. WATCH THE ROAD, NOT THE PERSON TO WHOM YOU'RE TALKING.
Female action stars that fight in high heels
How about male action stars fighting in high heals lolol ( Deadpool 2 )
Glamorizing mental illness. It f*****g sucks and is difficult to live with.
Making movies where the 1 good guy defeats 20 bad guys because the 20 bad guys attack the 1 good guy one by one.
Making women “perfect” all the time. I don’t want to see a post apocalyptic world or a safari adventure where the women have their makeup done, hair styled and armpits shaved. It’s incredibly unrealistic but then again.. so is everything else
This has been examined extensively by feminist critics: instead of real humans with flaws and agency and character development, women are portrayed as sprung from the womb morally and physically flawless, their only purpose in life to be vessels of resentment against two-dimensional misogynists. That’s not a feminist movie. That’s a dumbed-down exploitation movie.
Stop having people take like 1 bite of what they ordered then leave. It's a small thing, but I've never seen it happen in real life.
Casting 20 somethings to play teenagers and then constantly putting them in sexual situations.
Even better, casting 30 somethings as teenagers, and 30 somethings as their parents.
Casting attractive people in ‘ugly’ roles
*puts glasses and braces on an otherwise supermodel like woman* TAH-DAAAH! NOW SHE'S UGLY!
Characters getting punched multiple times in the face in 1 scene and having no signs of the trauma in the next scene.
Remakes of good movies, I don’t understand why they remake good movies, when there are tons of flops that have potential, that they could remake
Because the original made good money so they think they can cash in on it and make more the second time around
Forcing a love story that makes no sense in a movie that has nothing to do with romance.
Just hanging up after a phone conversation with out saying "bye." Pisses me off for some reason.
EMPTY CUPS. I hate seeing people holding cups and pretending to take drinks from obviously empty cups. Their hands never move right, or if it’s an open cup, you can literally see that it’s empty.
Pretending people can actually have a conversation in a bar without yelling
Shaky cam action fight scenes. No this is not artistic. Your choreography just sucks and you have to hide it
Protecting predators.
Not sure if the post is referring to weinstein types or the predator that fights aliens. I opt for the second one and agree - let the predator and alien fight unhindered and stop protecting the predator alternatively bring Arnold to kick his a*s
Casting the same 10 actors in everything. Let’s get some new blood in there!
Casting really well known, good looking actors as voice actors. Why not hire someone that might have a harder time getting lead roles 8 in live action movies?
Especially if that actor isn't... a very good voice actor to begin with. The two require some very different skillsets.
Stop recreating bad versions of good classic movies.
Stop using spectacular CGI to distract from a subpar plot. I'm looking at you Disney.
Come to think of it, the Disney stories are pretty simple and straightforward. They're not necessarily bad stories, but they're too simple for the amount of drama and big effects thrown in, and then it becomes all about this "look what we can do" thing.
Using that sandy brown filter on middle eastern cities.
Milking everything dry
Everything is a franchise now. How many sequels can we get out of this? I was so super excited when they announced the first Transformers film, it did not live up to its promise though, and the rest of the films? They have nearly destroyed my childhood love of the Transformers. They should just re release the proper Transformers Movie.
I wish Hollywood would stop treating the medium of animation as something inherently inferior to live action. I also wish 2D animation was used more for movies.
Screwing over special effects companies with contracts that won't keep the lights on, resulting in them going under, sometimes, right after winning an Oscar for their efforts.
Screwing over talent with contracts that offer points on the box office, and then claiming that their biggest hit of the decade made no money.
Screwing over the First Amendment with their aggressive litigation, DMCA abuse, and aggressive lobbying efforts to make the law value copyright over freedom of expression.
Hypocritically lambasting "the little people" for the impact of their infrequent travel and modest lifestyles, while themselves flying around the world to shoot movies or just turn up at social events to have their picture taken and get one of those swell swag bags.
Watering the luxurious lawns of their mansions during a severe drought, and exploiting undocumented labor to work on them for less than minimum wage.
Abusing the young, eager new talent that is constantly arriving in search of opportunities.
Engaging in the worst nepotism of perhaps any single industry.
Bringing in auteur directors, and trying to foist off a Batman reboot on them.
The copyright thing is a lot of bollocks, there's a youtuber who reacted to a DC movie trailer and was contacted by WB who told him they loved his reaction and asked for his permission to use it as part of their advertising campaign, the youtuber being a huge DC fan said yes in a heartbeat happy for WB to use his reaction only to discover that after praising him they issued a copyright claim on his video costing him money.
Let‘s add outsourcing to save money, so the big shots can keep making millions, while the artists are unemployed and can‘t survive. Making political statements like standing against Georgia for blatant discrimination, then going right back to filming there after the outrage dies down.
spot on also add shooting in states and countries (Canada) Giving HUGE tax breaks and the ability to circumvent Union rules and pay!
It's unreasonable to expect the entertainment industry not to embody the core principles of the society which created and supports it.
Unfortunately the "little people" in regard to America, have a GHG output that's 4-5 times higher than the global average. 16-20 tons, per person, per year, while the rest of the world averages out to 4 tons pp/py, the same amount that the "little people" output by driving their cars. 4.125% of humanity accounts for 11% of global emissions. Yes, the rich are markedly worse than "the little people" but that doesn't mean the little people aren't doing a whole bunch of damage that they need to address. Everyone is culpable, everyone needs to do better.
I think one of the biggest issues "the little people" have is when celebs make posts like "#gogreen #banplasticbags" and then spend five minutes in a jet for convenience and post it on social media. Or how most pollution actually comes from big companies who can decide to make themselves greener but blame the consumer for the choices that the company offers. Sometimes it's not easy to vote with your money because there is literally no other choice.
Load More Replies...Wow. You've got quite the list there; I'm not even sure I know what you're talking about. I don't really watch movies.
Let's see if I can help you out here. Here are some things to check out. 1) Rhythm & Hues VFX studio. 2) Black Widow movie, Disney+, and Scarlett Johansson 3) movie companies are known to flag YouTube videos even when the creator uses it in fair use. 4) Leonardo DiCaprio. 5) Kevin Hart, Sylvester Stallone, and some Kardashians in California during the drought. 6) Everyone. This is literally part of the plot to Nope. 7) they are called nepo babies such as Maude Apatow. 8) I disagree with it, but he is talking about Matt Reeves and the new Batman movie. Hope that helps...
Load More Replies...The endless attempts at creating "universes". Please stop.
They're trying to skip the work of creating depth. Shows like X-Files, Buffy, West Wing, Supernatural, etc. and movies like LotR and Star Wars.... the reason why they're cult classics is because people dug into them on their own and started talking on message boards and having discussions, etc. The worlds were all very rich to begin with and grew over the course of years, in some cases. Movies/tv now are trying to get the same 'feeling' without the time and effort it takes to make it that. They think they're just going to manufacture it by putting a superhero in it and calling it a 'universe' when they haven't even flushed out the original movie yet to give it more depth and weight and character development. If you think about John Wick- there was an example of a movie that gave a lot of weight to the characters and the environment. The hotel, the money system, the women in the phone office... it had these great details that created a universe you wanted to know more about.
Adapting s**t into live-action movies when they should really be animated.
Examples include upcoming Mega Man, Pac-Man and Minecraft movies which are ***ALL*** set to be live-action.
Ok but this picture is of the movie Pixels and is perfectly hilarious
Whispering/mumbling dialogue then cutting to a chase scene.
Dramatic posing close-ups.
Or talking endlessly when there is danger. I’m looking at you The Walking Dead. Noooo what they have to say is sooooo important. Zombies are coming? Who cares? Let me regale you with a long tale.
All great answers but what I've seen lately is just a lot of whacky decision making. There's multiple video game adaption movies and TV shows come out lately that miss the mark completely. Resident Evil/Halo Etc.
I know adaptations always have their quirks and things that would outrage a fan base but geez. The Halo TV show really felt like they just wanted to write their own story with already existing characters. It all comes down to executive decision.
I just wish the creators have more control over their projects. Instead of having execs with no creative abilities suggesting "Maybe you should make the super-soldier get out of his augmented power armor and instead just fight naked, also make him want to bang the enemy like Romeo & Juliette."
Doing the exact opposite of what is logically the best course of action in a given situation. Horror films are the worst for this (there's a murderer somewhere in the house but instead of running outside and seeking help I'll lock myself in the bedroom and use a hairbrush as a weapon to defend myself).
I would never go into a dark basement at 2 am when I'm alone after hearing a concerning noise

Or making you think the film is fantasy when it's really a sad film, I'm looking at you Bridge to Terabithia

Not explaining something that would easily resolve a conflict. Rom-coms are the worst, but every movie is guilty of that nowadays. Also, orphans, prophecies and any other lazy writing trope that's just taken for granted. If you can't write something new, get out of the way for those who can.
1. The nerdy-looking guy who is looked down upon by everybody including the hot popular girl but at the end of the movie wins the heart of the girl. 2. Protagonist running towards the danger instead of running away from it. 3. The protagonist about to be thrown out of school, college, job, etc., until he/she makes an inspirational speech that gets the protagonist to stay.
I have to say for me, it’s incredibly bad science. I can gloss over the odd little bit of artistic license but “The neutrinos are mutating”? How about a biologist looking at a new species and immediately attempting to pet it? I’m looking at you Prometheus. Let’s not even get into the cartographer getting lost and the “just run sideways” moment.
oh and everyone magically understanding any language they encounter on different planets without any explanation.

1) having female (action) heroes wear only their underwear, especially annoying in some middle ages/ancient/post apocalyptic times. she would be r... in day 1 2) the " I have important news for you lets meet" then they die 3) a woman attacked in a shower 4) everyone doing totally illogical things no one would do like not sharing the plan with major players...looking at you Star Wars 8...or you know just go into a dark forest at night when there is a murderer/monster and lets divide :-D 5) inventing a fake country somewhere for the US to save them 6) portraying different countries in an unrealistic way. like showing a perfectly developed country as in the middle of a famine for no reason and then the viewers think it really looks like that there
Person enters a pitch black place, flicks his bic, and every nook and cranny is lighted up like a super nova.
America. Just everything about America is portrayed wrong in Hollywood. For example how the people react logically and calm to apocalypses, aliens, etc. Now in the pandemic we know how they really act.
and all the aliens and catastrophic events happen and are solved in the US :-D like okay I get it but at least make them travel a bit

They would know about that if they'd ever had consentual sex.

Kids don't care if "Oscar-nominated so-and-so" will be doing the voice of an elephant and the voice actors that have been waiting for their opportunity of a lifetime get relegated for someone for who this is just another job.
The "magic backpack". How there seems to be an endless amount of gear in a backpack that can no way carry that much.
Making guns "click" every time they move. Entering dangerous situations armed to the teeth, but not having a round in the chamber.... Just overall terrible and unsafe gun handling.
Superheroes, I hate superheroes. It so boring, they always win. So they have to invent super-villains. Turns out we'd all be better off without them in the first place.
And that applies to infallible detectives as well.

I hate interference in the sound. They'll be silent and you here like white noise, then they talk and the noise goes away, which half the te can make it hard to hear them
Also, we should bring back the movie trailer narrator. Without the narrator, they are stuck piecing together scenes that often don't work out if context. So they either end up over sharing the entire plot, or the trailer seems like a completely different movie. Bring back the narrator and suddenly it's easy to summarize the complex plot
When horror films don't follow their own rules. You JUST said the monster can't go in the light, why are they flying around, breaking lit light bulbs?
Having everyone and everything- including children- be sexualized, and everything be about having sex with anyone, anytime. This includes games kids are playing and seeing ads for in their games. The rest of the world cannot understand America’s obsession with sex, violence, and nudity.
So this is a bit obscure, but when they add sound effects to guns that don't fit with the gun. The most common example is "cocking the glock". Someone will be holding a glock (or other gun without an exposed hammer) and they'll add the sound effect of a hammer being thumb cocked for dramatic effect. Even worse is when an actor is holding a double barrel shotgun and they'll add the sound of a pump. It really kills the immersion.
Stop using the line “i/u got this”. Without fail almost every serie and movie, really they aint got sh!t in real life
