The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.
"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
Ever since that letter he not only would say when he fed the fish, but would also describe parts of the show and what he was doing like tying his shoes and putting on a jacket. An interview years later he said he was more aware of the blind audience after the letter and made strides to make his shows as inclusive as possible, even passing the advice to other producers of children's shows.
Ok, just for the fact's sake, I guess the blind girl didn't write, she had someone write it for her.
Also, she was five, so I think it’s safe to assume someone wrote it for her any way
Load More Replies...So many good stories about this very special man. We decided the other day that we would like a world run by Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers.
And Jim Henson!! He, Bob Ross, Mr. Rogers, and Steve Irwin should run the world, honestly.
Load More Replies...He was the original KIND man...inside and out. His wife said he was the same off camera as on camera.
He was One in a Million of people who did the best they could for children. (and maybe a few parents as well.)
I just saw the film "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" on Netflix and a lot of things Fred Rodgers says hit very close to home, like anger/ temper management. He wasn't a saint, he was a real human being with emotions and feelings. He did things to manage those instead of blowing up at people like many of us do. He just was actively and consciously kind, he made an effort to be a kind person.
Well... I mean, saints were people too. Often just people who found extreme ways to be devout or help others. (i.e. Mother Theresa). So I would counter your statement about him being "not a saint". Frankly I think the man should be canonized. Men that pure and kind come along once every century or two.
Load More Replies...This man spearheaded alt text, TOO? He just keeps getting more amazing. I mean he was this amazing, but we just keep finding out about more
A friend of mine has a hand written response from Mr. Rogers. It’s a page long. My friend wrote to him as an adult to thank him for his show and asked questions. I was blown away when my friend showed me. Fred Rogers was truly a man with a heart so big, I’m surprised we couldn’t see the outline of it through his clothes. Some people who were actually pretty crappy but admired for being a supposed “bad ass” or just dangerous or thought to be caring but in reality…(seriously watch Penn and Tellers show on YT called Bull#hi# about mother Teresa. It was shocking and told through reps of the church, nuns who moved to work specifically with her because they believed in her and her hospital, and from her own mouth. Christopher Hitchens also wrote an investigative piece. No one was happy with what they found. But she raised 20 million for the church. They put in a new rule to speed run her into sainthood. And Fred Rogers truly deserved that. He was the real deal.
The movie Mister Rogers was actually good. I was pleasantly surprised. Apparently he was a rare incredible human being. I was always amazed my kids loved his show.
Mr. Rogers was a Bada**. Je had heavily tattooed arms from his years of service in the military, which is why you never saw him without a coat, jacket, sweater. He didn't want to scare the children.
Mr. Roger's was a minister of the gospel. His whole show was basically about "who is my neighbor"?
I remember this ..that was awesome of him. My very best neighbor (the only one I always looked forward to see)
That made me tear up. He.was such a good person and he cared so much and I know that little girl and many other children looked forward to hearing his voice
Mr. Rogers made my little girl very happy. She adored him. I wish I would have written him a letter, telling him that. He such a nice, gentle voice and such a soothing manner. She is all grown up now, and Mr. Rogers has left us, but I really wish I had been young enough to have seen his show when I was a little girl. I had a very difficult childhood, and I know he would have made me feel better.
When the hell is the Church going to canonize Mr. Rogers? The man was a damned SAINT! Especially to those of us in Pittsburgh. We regard this man as family.
We are a people who idolize routine courtesy and respect. What does this say about us?
He was a genuinely great person. I watched him all the time growing up.
Two lovely stories here:the child concerned about the fish, and Mr.Rogers providing reassurance for her.Mr.Rogers being Mr.Rogers,basically.
we stayed at a hotel one night, and noticed the TV was gone. We called front desk, and when they brought one up, they said sorry, Fred Rogers stayed here last night and asked that it be removed. He said he needed to answer fan mail and didn't want the distraction.
Mr. Rogers was an amazing man with a heart of pure gold. What a wonderful example for the rest of us. 🌹
Rev. Rogers-- highly recommend the movie " A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" about him
It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood, especially for that little girl
If Mr. Rogers ruled the world... It would be a much better place! RIP, Fred Rogers. We miss you.
Mr Rogers was wonderful, but I didn't appreciate or even like the show when I was growing up. Now I can see what an educated, intellectual, and compassionate man he was.♥️
I remember him doing this!! He was the best. I even remember putting his show on after I was ‘too old’!
Most people wouldn't think about doing something like that, it is so nice to think of how much he cares!
Mr. Rogers is a hero to so many people including me. We need more Mr. Rogers in the world
When I was in 2nd grade we had to pick a famous person to write to. I pick Mr. Roger's. I was the only person in my grade who received a handwritten letter back. My mom still has it with the rest of my important or special things from grade school. It definitely made my year and still makes me smile when I think about it. Thank you for reminding me of such a great memory ❤
He was indeed a lovely man. His program was educational, yet fun for kids..
This is wholesome, but the stoking of the tank is really bad! The giant goramis need over 100 gallons EACH and 1 gorami needs 10 gallons with 5 for every fish
I never saw Mr Rogers where I lived, but the more I read about this man and his show, the more I wished it was shown in all continents back in the day.
Honestly, I think he was one of the best souls this planet has ever had the privilege of experiencing 💖
Mr Rogers was sadly one of a kind in a world where we need thousands
So much to love about this man. He did so many wonderful things. Just love him
I never knew why he mentioned feeding the fish, but I always liked it.
I fell in love with Fred Rogers as an adult. I didn't watch him as a child, but I saw how ingenious the show was later. And, he really was as good and wholesome as he appeared, a rare thing in television
I thought every owner announced out loud when they fed their pet anyway
It's such a small thing that you wouldn't notice, yet means the world to someone else. This made me weepy.
I wish I'd appreciated him when I was a kid as much as I do now. When I was little, I thought he was creepy and wouldn't watch his show.
If shes blind , and he does not mention fish , how does she know , and how did she write to him in the first place , im guessing at 5 Brail would be hard.
He mentioned it once, and she was worried that he was not feeding the fish on a regular basis. She most likely had someone write the letter for her
Load More Replies..."The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.
Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”
Dangerous but good for one health as a result. Glad he was okay afterwards.
I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Good for you Dad! Glad he recovered. The gun was a little much but...it saved his life.
Yet again, an amazing human. It's just sad that for every Bob Ross, we get 200 eejits.
This was very interesting! Such a good early morning read. Thanks for sharing!
Such beautiful stories give a fresh counter balance to regular news. Thank you :)
You did a great job, Jonas. The best comment was the from the person pointing out that the forest/woods weren't infested with bears and wolves, they lived there! I laughed out so loud I woke my baby up!!! So fact or fiction, it was an absolute good time for this insomniac! Thanks for that!
Hit some highs and lows for me emotionally. Great light read. Full of meaningfulness and life. Love bored panda!!
Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

Reading these a second time, a lot of details seemed likely distorted or just plain BS. The first time, I bought in totally lol!
Thank u very much for including my God Eminem in this twice!!
#24 So... she didn't give the guy $4000 HERSELF but rather asked strangers to make her look good... yeah, great achievement~ 😕 #44 Haha isn't this playboy story depicts what's happening right now? Critical race theory, quotas for LGBT in different spheres (it's rather hypocritical for the community striving for equality to hire ppl/giveout subsidies based on their sexual orientation and not on their skills/financial situation). Being straight isn't cool the media tells us, and if you're white - you're de facto racist (even if you're a kid)~
As was mentioned in comments, I didn’t need to cry today. Or perhaps 🤔 I did.

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
Totally love these types of reads .. I have adhd so little facts and different information totally kept me wanting to see what was the next fact info

This list is cool, but one thing that I've learned is that pictures with said events are not usually telling the whole story or/are completely false.
I find it interesting that the article talks about shortt attention span and shallow understanding of a topic while condensing factoids into the very thing the article criticizes.
