The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.
"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.
Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”
Dangerous but good for one health as a result. Glad he was okay afterwards.
When I think of all the years my father really suffered with ulcers this news makes me weep.
Load More Replies...And his fellow scientists laughed at him when he presented his paper. Who's laughing now? all no-longer-suffering-from-painful-ulcers. Why, thank you Barry.
As someone who was “lucky” enough to experience h pylori firsthand, thank you sir!!!!
Taking a leaf from several of his predecessors who also had to resort to experimenting on themselves. Sometimes you just have to absorb all the risk yourself, in order to potentially save future lives.
Maybe, but I remember a time when ulcers were untreatable, before it was found that they were caused by bacteria (not so long ago). Now they are easily treatable. Sometimes that is how life altering breakthroughs are achieved.
Load More Replies...Note: H pylori does not cause all stomach ulcers. But this work sure did help a *lot* of people! :-)
It causes 85-90% of them, the rest being due to exotic conditions like autoimmune disorders, accidental poisoning, long time use of high doses of anti inflammatory drugs etc. Ulcers are almost never caused by temporary imbalance like stress, which only causes gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining). The fact that some gastroenterologists today still believe that stress causes ulcer despite extensive studies just goes to show even educated people can be stuck in ideology.
Load More Replies...Amazing man - he didn’t experiment on animals and that already makes him a hero in my book - no less taking a big risk with his own health to save and better the lives of untold numbers of people. You go, Barry!
Yup, reminds me of the scientist that went to such great lengths to prove that Yellow Fever was contagious.
Load More Replies...He really ticked off the gastroenterologists with this find. Ulcers were a big business
Thank you Dr. Marshall❣️ I'm one of the people that benefited from this.
For a wonderful but sad story look up the French Dr who realized his co workers filthy hands were the cause of childbirth fever!
Oh, poor Dr Ignatz Semmelweis. He didn't deserve what happened to him. His name should be more widely known!
Load More Replies...I thank you Dr Marshall. I've suffered from Ulcers over the years and thankfully your Sacrifice to achieve recognition about this Bacteria and the use through doses of Antibiotics have helped me greatly.
He must be commended for this brave act and consider him a HERO in the best sense of the word. Saved thousands of lives as a result.
H.Pylori lead to acute gastritis in his case, you don't get ulcers in 72 hours, nor do you cure ulcers with antibiotics in a mere 3 days
A lot of medical discoveries happened because of brave physicians putting their lives on the line. Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde was a story about the fear of this.
I've had this myself. It's horrible. The antibiotics come in a box called a Z-Pac. In the box are 2 weeks worth of pre-packaged tabs with about 10 pills in each tab. You have to take it all of course. The drugs made me almost as sick as the illness!! The testing for it is fun. You breath into a tube like a breathalyzer and your breath is used to test for the illness.
Sometimes when ever no one else doesn't get it you have to prove them wrong.
My mother was prescribed Nexium for years. Meanwhile...there was a cure. It's a tragedy that so many doctors are incompetent. Also, turns out Nexium causes stomach cancer.
I didn't know you could treat ulcers with antibiotics. I thought they were holes in the stomach lining.
I cannot thank this man enough, having had hereditory ulcers since I was a 14yr old girl he helped to change my life
Actually what happend he died and only came back life cos of he made deal with a Satan.
Wow. Excellent doctor, excellent! Well done Sir. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 The honor is well deserved.
Sucks that he had to suffer in order for people to believe him. Thanks to him though many of us with/or previously had thank him for that.
I had ulcers at 9 and they blamed it on the stress of having a younger brother with downs syndrome because he was also hyper! Now we know I likely got them from my dad who also had an ulcer at the same time! My sweet little brother was NOT to blame!
Thank you DR, you probably saved my life from bleeding ulcers caused by H-Pylori.
And this is why volunteering for such experiments should be allowed. Believe it or not, some of us think so low of ourselves that we would do this. Edit: yes, that includes me.
Science has a long history of researchers testing drugs and treatments on themselves. We lionize the ones who survive and ignore the rest.
I saw this years ago on BBC Horizon, sent for the manuscript of the programme took it to my doctor and said could my Dad go on the antibiotic. The surgery were doing a trial and so Dad joined the trial. Two weeks later he was free of a problem he has all his life. Thank you Dr Marshall.
Another hero: Dr Jonas Salk, inventor of polio vaccine. He refused to patent it.
He truly believed in his theory, he has blessed millions of people with that one discovery.
Grateful his theory was correct for him & everyone else with stomach ulcers
Thank you, my son faced this bacteria in his 30's and because of this amazing doctor was cured.
yes a true medical scientist , so glad he was ok, it still took science and medicine decades to use his findings
He found out why both my father then I had H. Pylori which gave us each ulcers, and they were then curable. So he got a Nobel Prize!? Fantastic! From my reduction of pain I say he deserves it! Thank you, Dr Marshall!
Same thing happened to the woman that discovered radiation!! Except her experience ended her life 😮💨
Thanks to his discovery and tests on himself I am now ulcer free for four years now. THANK YOU Dr Marshall!
That do it yourselfer Doctor would not be stopped. He acted as his own subject, proved his theory and received sciences’ highest Award for his achievement. That’s what I call Intrepid!
“Spock says, “Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” Captain Kirk answers, “Or the one.” This sets up a pivotal scene near the end of the film.”
He actually only developed gastritis, but that was enough, when tested, to prove that bacteria could live in the acid environment of the stomach.
As a suffer of H. pylori bacteria I thank you Dr. Barry J. Marshall ...thank You
May he be blessed by all, knowing or ignorant who benefit from his dedication and bravery.
I feel like he could have done an ethical study by giving people with stomach ulcers antibiotics (with a control group). That might not, on its own, have established the particular bacteria but it sure would have shown it was bacterial.
and thank you Dr. Marshall for not testing on any other animal but yourself!
I had an ulcer when I was 11. This was in 1988 and my doctors took ages to diagnose it as they were convinced that ulcers were caused by stress and unhealthy diets, smoking, etc and I couldn't possibly have one. One young doctor ordered test after test to prove I did in fact have an ulcer caused by the bacteria, and after 2 weeks on antibiotics I was better... I had months of pain and vomiting before this so I am very grateful to Dr Marshall
God bless this doctor! I had H. pylori ulcers several times when I was younger and it was always treated with an antibiotic called Flagyl . What I'd love to know is how a person contracts this bug in the first place.
There's thought that H pylori used to be a comensal and was innocuous when kept under control by other members of the gut biome. Those other members are now gone, in some or all of us, and H pylori can run wild in those people.
Load More Replies...Thanks to this man for his courage to do research where no one else would. Because of his research, my current doctor was finally able to figure out that I had ulcers and give me what I needed to get rid of them. This was after two other doctors were unable to discover what was wrong and I lost my job because I was sick all the time. If this discovery hadn't been made, I might never have found out what was wrong
He is my hero, Had HPilori Bacteria and suffered badly , now I am free of it and healthy
You'd think that sort of thing would still disqualify him. "I drank ivermectin to win the Nobel prize!"
I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Good for you Dad! Glad he recovered. The gun was a little much but...it saved his life.
Yet again, an amazing human. It's just sad that for every Bob Ross, we get 200 eejits.
This was very interesting! Such a good early morning read. Thanks for sharing!
Such beautiful stories give a fresh counter balance to regular news. Thank you :)
You did a great job, Jonas. The best comment was the from the person pointing out that the forest/woods weren't infested with bears and wolves, they lived there! I laughed out so loud I woke my baby up!!! So fact or fiction, it was an absolute good time for this insomniac! Thanks for that!
Hit some highs and lows for me emotionally. Great light read. Full of meaningfulness and life. Love bored panda!!
Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

Reading these a second time, a lot of details seemed likely distorted or just plain BS. The first time, I bought in totally lol!
Thank u very much for including my God Eminem in this twice!!
#24 So... she didn't give the guy $4000 HERSELF but rather asked strangers to make her look good... yeah, great achievement~ 😕 #44 Haha isn't this playboy story depicts what's happening right now? Critical race theory, quotas for LGBT in different spheres (it's rather hypocritical for the community striving for equality to hire ppl/giveout subsidies based on their sexual orientation and not on their skills/financial situation). Being straight isn't cool the media tells us, and if you're white - you're de facto racist (even if you're a kid)~
As was mentioned in comments, I didn’t need to cry today. Or perhaps 🤔 I did.

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
Totally love these types of reads .. I have adhd so little facts and different information totally kept me wanting to see what was the next fact info

This list is cool, but one thing that I've learned is that pictures with said events are not usually telling the whole story or/are completely false.
I find it interesting that the article talks about shortt attention span and shallow understanding of a topic while condensing factoids into the very thing the article criticizes.
