The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.
"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
And this was how she became known throughout the U.S.!
Load More Replies...They didn't realize that this is literally what women do for life! One way or another we beat men in their own game!!!
I thought you would say that we try to prove our value our entire life which is also true and sad
Load More Replies...This is still being done in most gameshows. When the producers think you suck or don't relate to the viewers, they make it harder for you to win.
Not in the US. There was a quiz show scandal based on the producers fixing the results. Helping some contestants and hindering others. A law was passed that if a TV station broadcasts a show where the producers manipulated the results, they lose their broadcast license for 3 years. 2000 affiliates aren't going to risk their license over Jeopardy so the shows are very closely monitored by both the networks and the government. When a guy nailed the price of the final showcase on "The Price is Right", the show was immediately shut down so they could investigate. Turns out the guy had watched the show way too much and memorized the prices of almost every prize. He got the exact amount by adding his anniversary date to the end of a round number. When the show came back, every prize is subtlety altered so the price is never the same. A different interior package is on a car or the retail price on the bag of noodles is from a Krogers in San Diego instead of an Tesco in London.
Load More Replies...She's more famously known in the US as Dr. Joyce Brothers (married name). As a psychologist she campaigned for the normalization of talking about mental health. She was the first psychologist to get their own TV talk show(s). One of the things she was famous for was forcing her network to keep broadcasting her show live for over 3 hours while she was talking to someone contemplating suicide to keep them from doing it. Until her death, every major network immediately had her on after a national tragedy (Reagan getting shot, space shuttle blowing up, Columbine shooting, etc) to have her help a nation grieve. She publicly addressed transgender rights in the 1950s. After Stonewall Inn happened in 1969, she became a leading advocate that homosexuality is not a mental illness and helped normalize it for the American people.
This is Dr. Joyce Brothers who later became a famous columnist. After the corruption scandal about the TV show, she was challenged to repeat her feat as an expert in prize-fighting. She did.
The question they posed to her was about boxing. She's a woman. She couldn't possibly know anything about boxing.🥴
They knew she knew all about boxing (it was her specialist topic agreed before the show; the producers thought a charismatic women who knew about a masculine topic like boxing would be a ratings winner), the question they tried to stump her with at $16,000 was about referees rather than boxers.
Load More Replies...She is now better known as Dr. Joyce Brothers. Years later she had to go back and prove in a Court of Law that she hadn't cheated. She hadn't.
Of course a woman had to "prove" herself. Have they ever made a man do that?
Load More Replies...I love when people underestimate you. It makes the looks on their faces all the more precious when I succeed!
her name was Joyce Brothers; she won with questions about pro boxing. She pre-read all the material on boxing and won the big prize.
She later became even more famous as psychologist Dr Joyce Brothers.
It is hard to imagine that women were simply not regarded as full human beings not so long ago (and still aren't by many)
She became Dr. Joyce Brothers, a famous psychologist, who regularly appeared on television to explain psychological concepts to the American public.
She is better known as Dr. Joyce Brothers, a popular TV Psychologist during the 1960s - 1970s.
Better known under her professional name, Dr Joyce Brothers. She later had her own very popular talk show.
And there are legions of men who still think we are intellectually inferior, over 70 years later.
Wait. I just read this same weird fact about Dr. Joyce Brothers. Is that her?
Dr. Joyce Brothers was a highly intelligent woman. I used to listen to her on the radio a lot back in the late 80's early 90's. She was very remarkable and married to another Doctor.
They were trying to make everyone fail, each question was build as multiple questions which you had to get all of them right. The show runners never thought they would pay anyone. However, the way the show worked, they would send them a stack of books the week before and then they will get questions about those books. Every week a different topic and different books, so it is not a question of her prior knowledge but her ability to memorize facts and read thru the material. Very hard show to beat, harder than the ones you see in TV today.
HER NAME WAS DR. JOYCE BROTHERS I think the subject was BOXING. I think her doctorate was in Psychology! ( I think because I'm old and did watch her win every week)
This is Dr. Joyce Brothers, famous US Psychologist among other things, an extremely intelligent woman. She was Joyce Diane before her marriage.
You might want to mention she's Dr. Joyce Brothers and went on to be famous.
PROVES WOMEN WERE ALWAYS SMART AND STRONG AND CAN DO ANYTHING THEY PUT THEIR HEART TO ❤️
Her full name was Dr. Joyce DIane Brothers. I guess being a "mere" woman worked for her.
Her full name is Dr. Joyce brothers. I guess being a woman worked out for her.
Their inability to accurately assess her intelligence reflects quite embarrassingly on them! Those producers used long fiber muscle to induce intelligence. She, grey matter.
was it because shes a♀female? if so OFFENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😂🤣😂not only did she take their money, she looked good doing so! Girl power
That is Doctor Joyce Diane Brothers (October 20, 1927 – May 13, 2013) was an American psychologist, television personality, advice columnist, and writer.
It was Dr. Joyce Brothers! She is FAMOUS among psychology majors. Not just "a women" but an esteemed psychologist!
Game shows have a long history of corruption, particularly in relation to women and minorities.
Better known as Dr. Joyce Brothers. A psychiatrist, she later went on to have her own advice show. After winning, she 'scrubbed' her memory of all the otherwise useless facts she'd memorized in order to win (her field was boxing, I think). When it was revealed that some shows were rigged, she was immediately suspected. So she memorized that c**p all over again and passed the interrogation with flying colors.
This woman is Dr. Joyce Brothers, who became a famous psychologist, television personality and host, advice columnist, and writer, after her win. Unfortunately, there are a lot of examples of people being jerks during the 50s regarding women -- but this most probably isn't one of them. She won in the category of boxing, which she was allowed to select. The producers did not want anyone to win beyond $16,000, so questions would get tougher in all cases. She simply overcame when others did not.
Of course 1950 they thought women should be in the kitchen and raising babies. Not intelligent. Good for her to show other women it's ok to beat the game of men
Her married name was Dr. Joyce Brothers—and the category on that game show was boxing! Dr. Joyce became famous for her advise; much like Ann Landers
Gloria Lockerman at age 12 became one of the most famous people in the U.S. after spelling ''antidisestablishmentarianism" on the $64,000 Question Show. There was a slightly racist aspect to people`s fascination with her: This was before the civil rights movement gained momentum, and Gloria Lockerman was black. Her brilliance was in direct contrast to many Americans` stereotypes of Black people, and there is no question that in countless living rooms, amazement was expressed not only that a girl of her age could spell the word, but that a girl of her color could do it.
Way to go Diane!! We are all Diane’s in our lives and there’s a movement in America right now that proves it. Women in America have moved to the top of the class in politics, acting, business, farming, medicine, police, you name it and we are there! On top of all that we also have your babies, raise families cook and feed you Jerks!!!!!
I seem to remember her with a different name. If I'm right, what is it?
Wow. This show was run by some real reprobates, not only for this, but giving answers to popular contestants to keep them on the show for ratings. There's an entire movie about it.
I think this show was eventually involved in. Scandal for trying to rig the show
Joyce Diane was Dr Joyce Brothers, a famous psychologist, and her subject was boxing!
Never underestimate the power of women, for indeed we have been proving narrow minds wrong since time began!
AKA Dr. Joyce Brothers. The clip is on youtube and it's awesome. And yes, the questions were extremely hard. One had 4 or 5 separate parts (like 'name all of the ....'). It was amazing to watch. Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqhxN9a8OCg&t=1058s and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2m1Hhb5C3c
That’s Joyce Diane Brothers, as in the Dr. Joyce Brothers, psychologist.
Lousy producers! She showed them! Meanwhile they helped a man cheat to win
Sad, unfortunately it applies to disabled people even now. Not to far back to people of color all colors.
That's Dr. Joyce Brothers. She had a remarkable life, and was 28 when she went on that game show.
I can only assume that those who chose the 'difficult' questions did not know the answers and therefore thought she would not know them either. Women are ALWAYS smarter than men.
Was this Dr. Joyce Brothers? Boxing? I think this was a question on another quiz show...
I wish I'd been there to see her smiling face when she held out her hand for that $!!!! What a triumph! Intelligence has no genitals!
She went on to become "Dr. Joyce Brothers" an American psychologist, television personality, advice columnist, and writer.
As others have noted, this is Dr. Joyce Brothers, one of the first "media shrinks." Her appearances on $64KQ won her notoriety for being a person who'd appeared on television. Second, her category was prizefighting. She memorized all the bouts and stats, and cleaned up on the quiz show. Then the scandals hit, and the good doctor had to re-study all the material so she could answer questions by congressional investigators, which she did. There's never been even a hint that Dr. Brothers was a participant in the scandals. I'd occasionally see her in midtown Manhattan, and she'd have two or three inches of gray hair below the blonde.
Why yes... yes it is Dr Joyce Brothers. Not only did she beat them at their own game but she parlayed her fame from this into becoming a very famous TV personality for decades afterwards. She died in 2013. Talk about a life well lived...
Load More Replies...Typical of the time and still happening now. This lady was fantastic and I hope her winnings brought her happiness and joy ❤️
She was also later known as "Dr. Joyce Brothers" and had a long career as a media personality.
She went on to become a very famous psychiatrist, lecturer and writer...Dr. Joyce Brothers
Dr. Joyce Brothers! I saw those shows and she was awesome. She said she deliberately picked a category (Boxing) that had a finite amount of material to cover and then set about learning it all.
NEVER underestimate a woman under ANY circumstances, but ESPECIALLY when she needs to put a man (or men) in his place - the satisfaction is the real prize here, the money is just a bonus!!!
I remember a Joyce Brothers who was an expert on boxing. Looks like her ......
I always wondered how they arrived at the number $64,000 for this game
They didn't try to make her lose because she was a woman, at least not directly. She was not drawing in viewers and The $64,000 Question was losing the ratings war each time she appeared on the show. So they tried to get her off so they could get the next contestant in. The $64,000 Question was a rigged show and they coached popular contestants to keep them coming back, while trying to stump those that were unpopular.
Getting anonymous down votes for trying to correct a misinterpretation of events makes me a sad panda.
Load More Replies...Relative was asked to throw a game back in the 90s because she was on it too long and they were getting bored and wanted to give someone else a chance. 😁 Kinda had a point I guess. Also I heard the reason they didn't like Joyce Diane was because she sometimes didn't wear makeup.
"Regardless of the circumstances, I am someone who likes to do one particular thing: shatter the self-esteem of others. They think that they are certain of winning, so I like to defeat and stomp them beneath my feet until there is nothing left of their confidence. Only despair shall remain." - Li Qiye
Joyce Diane? Really? She went on to become Dr. Joyce Brothers. They didn't dislike her for being a woman -- she was not the first woman champion -- but for refusing to wear makeup. (Obviously, she did sometimes.) The show was financed by makeup advertisements. She was never named Joyce Diane; her maiden name was Joyce Bauer; Diane was her middle name.
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.
Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”
Dangerous but good for one health as a result. Glad he was okay afterwards.
I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Good for you Dad! Glad he recovered. The gun was a little much but...it saved his life.
Yet again, an amazing human. It's just sad that for every Bob Ross, we get 200 eejits.
This was very interesting! Such a good early morning read. Thanks for sharing!
Such beautiful stories give a fresh counter balance to regular news. Thank you :)
You did a great job, Jonas. The best comment was the from the person pointing out that the forest/woods weren't infested with bears and wolves, they lived there! I laughed out so loud I woke my baby up!!! So fact or fiction, it was an absolute good time for this insomniac! Thanks for that!
Hit some highs and lows for me emotionally. Great light read. Full of meaningfulness and life. Love bored panda!!
Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

Thank u very much for including my God Eminem in this twice!!
#24 So... she didn't give the guy $4000 HERSELF but rather asked strangers to make her look good... yeah, great achievement~ 😕 #44 Haha isn't this playboy story depicts what's happening right now? Critical race theory, quotas for LGBT in different spheres (it's rather hypocritical for the community striving for equality to hire ppl/giveout subsidies based on their sexual orientation and not on their skills/financial situation). Being straight isn't cool the media tells us, and if you're white - you're de facto racist (even if you're a kid)~
As was mentioned in comments, I didn’t need to cry today. Or perhaps 🤔 I did.

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
Totally love these types of reads .. I have adhd so little facts and different information totally kept me wanting to see what was the next fact info
The best entries are those that show how easy it is to do good to a fellow human being. Let the lesson not be lost.
This list is cool, but one thing that I've learned is that pictures with said events are not usually telling the whole story or/are completely false.
I find it interesting that the article talks about shortt attention span and shallow understanding of a topic while condensing factoids into the very thing the article criticizes.
