The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.
"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
Moreover, in Italy there is discrimination for all singles, whether they are gay or straight: no single person can officially adopt a child.
Load More Replies...What a sweethearts. I don't know how to respond to the fact that as a gay man he would only be given a child with an illness, disability, etc. As if he and these children are second choice, not important. I have no polite words and don't want to swear today.
It makes it even more horrible if you consider that they really don't care that a child with difficulties that needs even more care is given to a single parent! Don't get me wrong he looks great! But in other circumstances a gay or straight wouldn't be able to take a child alone and in this case they decide that one salary and one person would be enough for such a challenge! It's a horrible discrimination against gays and against kids with disabilities!
Load More Replies...The one thing that stands out to me in this post is that not only gay people are seen as less in Italy, but children with illnesses, behavioral problem or syndromes as well
Just goes to show you that people working in social services have implicit biases that impact the people they are supposed to be helping. I loathe s**t like this, fortunately for the guy, he and his daughter are a win win.
Yea, to stay politically correct. There was a case where a lesbian couple kept getting denied adopting a child for fear, they (the lesbian couple) would turn the queer
Load More Replies...This father is amazing! And the child is beautiful. I am beyond words about the rest. It is so unbelievable and so unjust.
My big sister has down syndrome and i feel the same
Load More Replies...Down syndrome no longer means unemployed, unable to live on their own and I have a feeling this dad is going to raise his daughter to be quite independent.
Down's syndrome children are the most lovable, wonderful children one only needs to be near them for a minute and your heart is gone!
I really have never seen a comment that I have wanted to upvote 1000 times before this one
Load More Replies...What kind of f****d up s**t is that? "Hey, you're gay so... u can't have a "normal" baby... u can only have a baby that the egotistical, stuck up, stupid heterosexuals don't want..." .wtf? I mean, cool they're letting single gay ppl adopt. But what the F**k kind of discriminatory bullshit is this. Not just against the adopter but the child! "You're "defective" so u can't go to a "normal" home... u have to wait for one of the other "rejects" to want to adopt u since nobody except a gay person could ever love u n all of your "defects"..." obviously I don't think any of these things. I would adopt a child w/ any disability or issue because I myself am a "reject".. lol. But how f****d up is that. There are so many kids who need loving homes. why are we discriminating against who can/can't adopt n who they can/can't adopt? Love is universal.. it shouldn't matter their sexual orientation, race or gender. As long as they will give that baby a good, loving home.
Dear Heart you are more brave than I am - you frankly say what I can only think may GOD bless you
Load More Replies...I bet that little girl is loved so much, good for her and her Dad.
It's messed up in so many ways that they take the children they consider undesirable and keep them aside for the parents they would also consider undesirable. Treating children as items, as rewards or commodities, and throwing the ones they don't like away to people they don't like...
A wonderful man with a wonderful attitude. His race and gender means nothing---he is caring and sticks to his promises.
Your a gay single man so your only right is to a child no one really wants... WTF?
That's how it looks to me Tiffany - bless y heart
Load More Replies...Why would a single person be given a child who needs more support and attention than normal? Social services, what a joke
I wish all the protesters outside women's clinics would devote their energy to inclusive adoption instead of screaming at frightened 16 year olds in parking lots.
Love is love. Man man, woman woman, woman man makes absolutely no difference. Love isn't bound by gender and people should try a little harder to accept that.
I previously commented on this thread agreeing with the poster OCD Mom and further stated that "they" say we come a long way, I say not even close. I came back to read some of the other posts regarding the issue. A lot of people seem truly up in arms about the way social services treated a. The man because he is gay; b. The child because she has down syndrome. I don't know how many of you open your eyes or how often you do so and really take a good long look at the world around us, we live in a world that is so completely morally corrupt and the disdain that people feel for one another so rampant, it's a wonder the earth still exists. Something as got to give and it's got to happen soon. I am just glad that I am in the twilight years of my life and will be out of here soon enough.
So, what, "We don't think that you're capable of being a good parent bc gay+ unattached, so we're going to give you the most complicated and care-intense case so that we can feel justified in our prejudices when you f**k it up." Is that what's happening here?!
WHY....would he only be allowed to adopt a sick..disabled child??? Because he was thought to be "sick" himself????? Who made this decision???? Ggrrrr... She got the right Daddy...
This man is a prince among dad's! Having grown up with 2 of the sorriest on the planet ,this is one blessed young lady! Those adoption perameters ,though,... .need some serious re- evaluating ..
This angers me on so many different levels. I’m adopted and have two moms. We were the first same-sex adoption in the county and state. I’m also disabled. They took extra classes to be able to foster a child with special needs or health issues. They had to fight tooth and nail to get parental rights terminated (extreme physical and sexual abuse with bioparents) and even harder because CPS decided that a 3yo with health issues wasn’t a candidate for adoption. My one mom was a social worker who had worked for CPS a bit and my other mom had an extremely well paying job as a founder of programs at several universities so they were able to take on the system and have the best of the best attorneys in the state. I guarantee you this kiddo has a home and family that would make anyone jealous. She’s going to be loved, respected, and cherished her entire life. She’s gained an amazing father that will forever show her the love she deserves.
Part 2: she is NOT a ‘punishment’ to dump on a ‘less than ideal’ perspective parent. She is NOT damaged goods because of being disabled. He is NOT unfit to be a dad because he’s gay. This is such a disgusting, low, backhanded blow to adoptions in general. She is his daughter now. To treat both of them as less than desirable adoption candidates is atrocious. And I hope the system recognizes this after they see what an amazing family they’ve become.
Load More Replies...A true fit for sure, but so completely off on the humane side of life! So you defective folk can be a unit, but can’t have a fully healthy baby if one of gayness would want! World, rise up! So skill set, economic provision and being a loving heart, dedicated to raising a little human can only fit in one choice! I’m happy a child, considered unadoptable has a loving Father!
The wee lass has landed with the perfect dad but what sadness about the state of adoption for others. I do hope that things improve for the country ❤️
Discrimination in its purest form. But this man deserves all the world can give him!
I agree with the mother of a child with OCD This story simply reeks of snobbery and such revolting discrimination - so he is gay - gay with willing partners - he is NOT paedophile the poor wee girl was in need of a loving Daddy -now she has what she needs - but this weird fact of so much discrimination makes me feel quite sick
Good pointing out that gay people often care for children straight people refuse to care for, but it's the straight people's magical baby making ability that's a big deal to churches, and not the kids when they arrive.
It's really sad that you could only adopt a child with a disability, just because you were gay. Even sadder than adoptive parents reject children with disabilities! But I think it was just fate stepping in. You are perfect for one another, and seem meant to be. Maybe your love and acceptance of differences will encourage others to reconsider their opinions!
This feels so wrong. That he was denied a child based on his gender and sexually, then told you can only get these children, as if they were less than or trash. Smh. I am glad they found one each other
Despite the discrimination, he STILL moved forward and did a wonderful thing. Kudos, you are 100x better than those people and organization(s) who would "only" let you adopt a child that was seemingly labeled as "undesirable". I hope they both have a wonderful, fulfilling life!!!
The people in positions of power who create and enforce such disgusting guidelines for adoption….are the problem with this world. I presume they are close-minded narcissists who do not have the ability to love another. I’m going to try and focus on the two lives that will forever change and the example of unconditional love that Luca has in his heat.
Two discriminated people got to find each other. Thank God for people like Luca.
Doesn't matter what country it's in social services is all a bunch of sick f***s
Good for them both, but shame on Social Services! That system is seriously broken. I'm glad those two found the persons they needed and deserved. God bless you both with long, healthy, happy, and loving lives. ♥️
this is so sweet yet so sad. As a sapphic female, I plan on adopting a child that has been through a lot so that I can create a safe space for everyone.
I don't even know where to start! Why wouldn't gays make good parents, why would a singleton not make a good parent, why would they only be given an ill or disabled child?
As if to say, this one is already messed up so it doesn't matter if this gay man screws up or abuses her. That's contemptible!
well done him but boo to a system that is prejudice to gay people, he should not be treated any different to anyone else applying for adoption.
I'm glad he's happy and she looks happy, too. But shame on social services for having double standards in placing the very most vulnerable child into a home with someone from a demographic social services themselves evidently disparages. They shouldn't disparage gay men and they should make it priority by their own standards to place the most vulnerable children, like this one, into homes that they fully welcome and encourage.
It seems really screwed up that just because this man is single and gay even tho he is obviously a wonderful prospect for fathering any child he will only be allowed the children no one eles wants smh however this worked out for this little girl it's still very wrong and distasteful in my opinion!!
What disturbs me the most about this story is that apparently social services believe that those with disabilities deserve 'less than'. A gay man is an unfit parent for a healthy baby, but is considered fit for a disabled one?
Congrats she is beautiful. Sad that they put disabled people or emotional fragile people so low on their list. Giving them to people who they think are not going to be good enough for "normal " children. What difference does it make as long as they are good parents.
Those things are sick. But it’s so sweet for both of them! (And no, I don’t mean the man and the daughter when I say “sick things.”
Love is blind when love truly abides! Best wishes to the proup papa and his beautiful baby girl!
That's awful the way they talk about disabled children and gay men, disgusting
My mother adopted 15 kids with disabilities. My sister and brother have down syndrome and look exactly like that. It's so heartwarming to see other people adopt.
You are a good man, I have read your story, you will do well, God bless you, and your daughter !!!
Shouldn't the first question here be: WHY IS THIS EVEN HERE LABELED AS WEIRD-FACTS? Exactly what is weird about any part of this story? Being gay is not an anomaly. Downs Syndrome is not an anomaly. Single parent adoption is not an anomaly. Whoever submitted this and labeled it this way should be flogged severely. Shame on Bored Panda for really poor judgement in agreeing to include it in this light.
I dont understand this thinking. Why is it gay individuals are only ALLOWED to take care of the disabled or a disordered? Are they thinking that both the gay and the disabled are less important some how?
As if being a gay single father isn't hard enough, the agency would only give him an ill child? What the hell is that about? You're gay, so you only get a broken kid.... WTH.
Be a mother or a father doesn't mean to be necessary related by blood. It takes incondicional lots of love , just that.
ok i'm rounding up a posse to go ruin the lives of the over 20 families that rejected that beautiful little girl SIGN UPS: 1. Lightningstar 2.
Why would they only give him so called "problem children?" I know they meant it as an insult but I kinda feel like they're complimenting him like "regular" couples can't handle disabled or behavioral problems in children. That whole situation is f'd up but I'm so glad it turned out for this incredible man & his beautiful little daughter.
I saw the story of a male gay couple who could only adopt aids babies and only until they were healthy to be adopted by a "normal" Even after these kids grew up thinking of their dad's as the only people to love them and give stability. Hope this changes
The social services obviously have mental illness and no compassion. Fire them. Send them to School of Humanity! God bless you Luca!
This man is a saint . WhAt a blessing for both of them. But what a horrible rule !!! To do that to the child or the man is beyond belief!! What sort of ethics or conscious do they have making a rule like that?
I felt that way when my Dad had brought his girl friend to meet my twin & I in our foster home. I feel in love with her right away ran & hugged her and said ‘you’re going to be my mom.’ Her previous wealthy Catholic husband had divorced her after she had miscarried (twins) and also had a partial hysterectomy. I think We were a god send to her, at least for a few years.
I checked out his Instagram! And they are an amazing father daughter duo. Beautiful
Love is love, it has no eyes, no discriminations, only love.
He didn't care about thing the child had. He wanted to be a dad. Him having the knowledge was a bonus
it does not matter Gay or not, this man is a super dad for his new daughter, what a great story love this man myself to have as my dad but I am a bit to old 82
God bless you and your daughter ,such love ,wonderful people with big hearts
We can all learn from one another. The lesson here is love and compassion.
I have an autistic child so anybody who loves a special needs child is touched by God
This gives me hope =] I hope he finds an amazing 2nd father for her <3
That single gay man and child "normal" people rejected know more about humanity and love than the approved of folks.
So glad that after everything out in this world that this little girl was a able to get a good dad who loves her.
As someone who was not given the gift of fertility there is no child i would ever reject. I've wanted to be a mother for as long as I've had memory and being given the opportunity to love and raise ANY child especially one that has needs not anyone is willing to meet.
@OSD Mom Yes to you comment. The notion is wrong on so many levels.
My mom worked with many different types of children who had illnesses and disabilities. While children with down syndrome can have their bad days like anyone, my mom always compared them to sweet innocent angels. This dad got a jewel, not a “less than”.
Disabled children are not bruised fruit or scratch-and-dent appliances. I feel sorry for the people with this mindset. They are missing out on so much.
The gay part doesn't even matter, this MAN, regardless of race, creed, color, or sexual orientation, is an AMAZING human being.
We have a Downs child in our family, and she's the bomb, she is so smart and cute and a funny outgoing loving person! This dad has earned his place in heaven💚💙💛
The little girl looks so happy, and so she should be. She has a brilliant father!
Why would they only give a kid with behavioral problems or disability to a single parent anyway? Shouldn't it be the other way around, where they only would give to an experienced, married couple with a stable living situation, and a kid who doesn't require much would be given to a single parent?
How beautiful don't let the man keep you down and try to tell you what you can and can't be, thank you for giving that beautiful baby everything she deserves in the world!!!!
Upsyndrone, parents with these Angels are the most blessed people in the world
She is given love through Jesus every child with Down syndrome is filled with so much love
Because my aunt had cancer in the past she couldn't have an american child at all. They went to Russia to get my two wonderful cousins
You may not like the “logic” or reason, but this is probably what it is (I’m only guessing), and it does make a certain amount of sense: MOST of the people that come in to adopt are probably heterosexual couples, following perhaps by gay couples, but the point is that they are couples. Most likely everyone wants a “normal” child because most people want to fit in and be “normal.” But this leaves most of the children with sickness and disabilities left not being adopted, and the social services people probably do not like this fact at all. They probably wish that people would adopt these children too! But if a couple comes in and the social services people insist that they can only have one of these “less desirable” children (sad fact indeed), the couple would likely complain and say, “But you gave ALL of those other couples the children they wanted! This is not fair!” This leaves the social service people with a problem. So, since they would prefer a couple to adopt over a single per
God intended; the proper system for children is broken or none existent.
I'm Italian and this is only partially true. In Italy there's NO law about who a single parent can adopt. There's nothing such as "you're a single gay so you can only have a child with problems". Luca just CHOSE to adopt this unfortunate child.
I don't have a problem with gay couples adopting or using a surrogate, but don't teach the child that being gay is normal.
PART 1: You turned something so sweet into something so sour. Anyway, who wants to be “normal” I have ADHD and that has allowed me to be smarter than 99.5% of the top 5 people from every class nation wide, I am studying aviation at my school and I can have a pilots license before I can drive, I have spent half of my primary school time at the back of the class because I had finished all of my work and I knew it all, we had to read a novel in groups across 10 weeks, I finished it within 30mins. Also, I am just asking, in a straight relationship who is the man and who is the other man, or the woman and the other woman? Like y’all weird, also it is normal to be gay (1500 species) while being homophobic isn’t (1 species). I mean your entire argument is not based on any facts, but is based on a religion that only started being homophobic in the 1950s because homophobic translators changed the original meaning, you know “A man should not lay with a younger male(punishing p*d*s) as he does a woman” into
Load More Replies..."If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.
Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”
Dangerous but good for one health as a result. Glad he was okay afterwards.
I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Good for you Dad! Glad he recovered. The gun was a little much but...it saved his life.
Yet again, an amazing human. It's just sad that for every Bob Ross, we get 200 eejits.
This was very interesting! Such a good early morning read. Thanks for sharing!
Such beautiful stories give a fresh counter balance to regular news. Thank you :)

Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
Totally love these types of reads .. I have adhd so little facts and different information totally kept me wanting to see what was the next fact info
The best entries are those that show how easy it is to do good to a fellow human being. Let the lesson not be lost.
This list is cool, but one thing that I've learned is that pictures with said events are not usually telling the whole story or/are completely false.
I find it interesting that the article talks about shortt attention span and shallow understanding of a topic while condensing factoids into the very thing the article criticizes.
