The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’

Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.

"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

It’s sad that the women had to shut down the country to get heard and taken seriously

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."

According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.

This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.

"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.

"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.

"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.

This is amazing. But also I hate mom-events and dad-events at school so so so much. It's almost 2022 and schools are really still assuming that every kid has a mom and a dad? Wtf? As a single mom I'm extremely fortunate that my kid has the best godparents in the whole world and her godfather has gone to many daddy-daughter events with her. But there are kids who are excluded from these events all the time and it breaks my heart.

It's also unfair to people who have two of one parent. They have two parents, its just two moms, or two dads, or what if one of their parents is non-binary? I agree with you completely.

I'm so sorry to be a bit negative about this as I also lost my father at a young age. The intention is wonderful and I don't know how the event was managed but such an invitation also gives the pedophiles and narcissists an opportunity to find their way into vulnerable families.

I LOVE this story so much, but also feel sad that the school only realized after setting up the event. Schools and orgs the world over - NOT EVERYONE COMES FROM A "TRADITIONAL" FAMILY SET-UP. STOP REQUIRING A "DAD" OR A "MOM" - FOR SOME PEOPLE IT'S A GRANDPARENT, OR THEY HAVE TWO DADS, OR WHATEVER. OPEN EVENTS TO ANY ADULT WHO CARES FOR THE CHILD.

Let’s go to the comments and I’m not disappointed. Y’all are pretty amusing. Give this school some credit y’all, I’m sure they didn’t allow that prison bus if rapists and murderers in. Or at least didn’t let the kids go back with them. Sheesh. Maybe their was a kid or two that was actually helped for once in a way you will never see. Maybe a couple of them were grateful for seeing that someone does care. I wonder how many positive impacts this had on those children. What if there were no negative impacts OMG the horror of that. What if this saved the life of a child that was feeling alone and unloved and uncared for. I’m just saying not all strangers or men have the intentions y’all think every man does. And yes I’m speaking from experience. A stranger, a man, a great man at that stepped up in my life and I will forever honor the role model he was. And he stayed that way until his death. Forever changed my life. RIP Raymond.

YES ... hundreds of these men have a lot to be commended for ... but I GUARANTEE you (based on STATISTICS alone!) ... there are several amongst them ... who are likely NOT there because of the goodness of their hearts!

Wish every community thought that way. My daughter was excluded from Girl scout events because of not having a Dad. After they flat out told me that an uncle or grandfather was not allowed to go with her to a dance and she just wasn't invited we quit that troop.

Agh, it reminds me of all the Daddy/Daughter dances my daughter's school would do, oblivious to the fact that her dad was dead, and that there were plenty of other little girls who didn't have a father in their lives. I petitioned them to do a adult/child dance, to be more inclusive of single parent and foster families, but they weren't willing to break there special tradition.

I don't mean to be negative but I also grew up with my mom. How can a stranger become father figure just because he volunteers? Personally it would not mean a thing to me as a kid , I would prefer my mom there who raised me as father and mother together.

Most of those kids need a male role model. This shows them that you don't have to be a drug dealer or in prison.

yes ... so true ... because ALL of them are kind hearted ... and NOT ONE of them actually came to groom a vulnerable child who misses having a dad ... I live in Australia ... in an affluent suburb. I was recently privy to a birdseye view of the houses in my area where there was a child sex offender ... 1 in 15 houses. So no ... I don't think all 600 of these men were 'kind hearted' ...

There was a similar story about a school that realised that some teens were lacking father figures, so a group of men came in each morning, greeting the kids, hugging them, giving them high-fives, and speaking affirmations to them. So pure.

Unfortunately, too few men show up in their own childrens' lives, and the children have to go without or borrow a Dad. Too many men who are only interested in sex, too many women who aren't as concerned with choosing either birth control or husband/father material.

But children know they aren't tveir fathers. I don't see the point. What if my father is dead? I don't want a stranger to be there. What if I have two mothers? Or only a mother? In any case, a stranger would hurt me even more. Do family events.

When my son was in elementary school I was the only father to volunteer to chaperone school trips. I was smothered by small boys, especially in kindergarten, first and second grades. I would have one on my shoulders, two holding each hand and two more waiting a turn. Occasionally one would just cling and cry. I could NEVER understand why I was the only father that thought it important enough to spend the day with my child. The sad stories about the essentially fatherless kids whose dad's lived two miles from school broke my heart. Being divorced didn't seem like a good reason for child abandonment. These children were in emotional agony. I'm not ignorant of the fathers you don't want a child near or dads who don't want the child. I had one. But a classroom where 70% of the fathers are missing from their child's lives? Good for these men! The city should have given them a parade.

Wow!!! I think that is the largest shortage in America •••Real Men that put their wives/girlfriends/SO’s & their children before themselves. And I realize that if they work everyday & bring their salaries home for the use & benefit of the family, that THAT is being selfless… but so many males don’t give of their TIME/AFFECTION to their families…it has an incredibly negative effect on children, especially male children. Get it together men or in the alternative, wrap it up!!

Needs to be done all of the time. Girls need a good male role model. Boys tend to be interested in Girls similar to positive female role models. Awesome. In high school I was nominated for Homecoming Queen. It was decided that our fathers would drive donated convertibles with each girl waving as they circled the field at halftime. At the time I didn't even know where my father was living and had no clue wtf to do. As I hid in a bathroom stall crying a teacher walked in and very casually asked "Would it be OK with you if the principal drove your car?" How to go from suicide to euphoria in 5 seconds or less?! YOU GUYS MAY NEVER KNOW THE IMPACT YOU HAD BY SHOWING UP. THANK YOU.

This has been one of the greatest problems with society no father in the home has lead to the destruction of the family unit. Some cases the kids are better off but i am firm believer all children need 2 strong parents to raise them.

California needs to start replicating what Texas does. It's like all the Goodness in the nation is is Draining down to the Great state of Texas. Why? Because GOOD People are fed up with the lefts undying hypocrisies and endless lies.

Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.

"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.

"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.

"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.

an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”

Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.

"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”

I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.

At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

It was a show about teaching cooking skills to prisoners to give them a job when they get out to rehabilitate them. Ramsey runs a foundation for that and has led to thousands of ex-cons in the UK getting gainful employment when they get out.

Charlie Brown and Franz Stiegler: The B-17 was heavily damaged and going down, but Brown was able to get it stable again. The german air field commander said that any pilot who shoots at parachutes will be executed, and Stiegler considered the barely flying plane as parachute. He flew so close the the machine that the AA batteries couldn't shoot without hitting Stiegler, and he signaled Brown to land - which he refused. Stiegler decided to escort them out of the hostile air space

Sad, lonely introverts... Such judgment. How about individuals who like to observe rather than act and join immediately. The human species thrives on finding patterns and experiencing new things, when in reality we are the novelty ourselves.

Sweet, but ... but they were both bitter and mean persons. Henry Ford expressed he liked how germany was run in the thirties, being an antisemit as well, and Edison ... well, where to begin, where to begin ... has he ever invented anything himself, not just taking credit for what competitors and employees have come up with?

The school I teach at played another school (we're both state/public schools but the other school always acted like they were better than other state schools) and they beat the pants off us using this move set. (I had not taught my chess kids this move set as I wanted them to develop their own strategies.) The next time we played that school, I had taught them the counter to it, so the next time we won. The next season that school suddenly "didn't have time" to play chess matches anymore.
