The United States of America is the land of the free and full of opportunities. It is one of the largest economies in the world and it has always amassed people for the life one can create there. But, like every country, it has its own way of functioning and the people living there have their own culture. And if you are also attracted to this country and would like to travel to the United States or you are planning of moving there, you should expect to encounter things you‘ve never seen before or things done differently to what you are used to.

A few days ago, Reddit user Ymij asked people to share some things Americans don‘t realize exist only in the United States. And people had a lot to say. The post got more than 10k answers and Bored Panda gathered a list of some of the most upvoted responses.

THIS! I remember a time that my dad had gotten laid off and my mum was dealing with health issues. They were simply down on their luck and filed for food stamps. Due to their Canadian pension they only qualified for $18 in food stamps a month and made too much to have health insurance, just adding to the health issues.

Most places use chip-and-pin where they *have* to take the card at the table since you need to enter your PIN. USA credit card banks decided Americans aren't smart enough for chip-and-pin, so we just have chip and an archaic signature.

The intended function for the scooters is actually for old people who can’t really walk I think. But sadly, this is what they’re used for.

Yes, they are supposed to be for elderly and handicapped (my husband used one a few times when his foot/ankle was in a cast) but they do sometimes tend to get snapped up gluttonous obese people who have no concern for others.

Exercises is the least effective route to weight loss. Want to lose weight, put that pork chop down. Eating a donut is anything from 300 to 500kcal, and you're looking at a 5 mile run to burn off that donut. Not a leisurely stroll, but a hard run.

Having morbid obesity as a "disability' because almost 1/3 of that country consists on fat people, and having myself having to give many of those scooters to obese people instead of actually disabled people while working at events/fairs/shows/etc, saying it's ridiculous and idiotic is just the facts. This is the exact reason why I don't use a wheelchair or a scooter even though I'm disabled. I walk with a crutch and will literally drag my leg behind me, hanging on to the cart before I'll use one. It's a pride thing for me even though I know other people who really need them and I don't judge them. There's too much judgment associated with these things and people just stare.

There are a variety of ailments that limit people's mobility. That's why these were added to stores. They have allowed the disabled to be much more independent in recent times. Parenthetically, some, or perhaps even most, of those disabling ailments lead to obesity. Personally, I'd rather be fat than a judgmental twat.

Ok, stop being judgmental. The scooters are for disabled people. Those people are often overweight because they are disabled, not disabled because they are overweight. How the heck are you going to exercise when your body is in pain and the exercise hurts. In addition, some disabilities are invisible. You don't know what a person is going through or is capable of. If you have a mobility issue, sometimes you can walk from the car to the store but not do an entire shopping trip without help. No, disabled people don't always have their own scooters. Those things are expensive. They may have a cane or something else, but sometimes they can't do an entire shopping trip without some assistance. One last note: It is not a MORAL or ETHICAL failing to be overweight. These are NOT bad people. They are just people living their lives the best they can. Stop judging people's lives by what they look like. Just stop judging.

They weren't meant for the obese. They are for those that would qualify for a handicapped sticker, for those that can't use a limb(s), and for the elderly. When my mom was in her late 80s on into her 90s, I finally convinced her to try using them so she could enjoy shopping again and she loved zipping around so she could look and shop and put her items in the basket in front. I had to carry a folding wheelchair in the trunk as they were many times in use by large folks. This sucked because we had to use a hand basket and it wasn't very large and it was awkward to manage.

Honestly? Stop with the obese s**t. Yes some people are obese and can't walk. Most people who ride the scooters and are obese are obese because they already have a permanent injury or mobility issues not related to obesity. My father had a severly injured knee, scooters are greats for the sick, elderly, and minorly handicapped. Not just for obese people. Think outside the box for once. The scooters are not for the obese... you get all your information from all the wrong places and it shows. FFS how stupid can you be OP? The scooters are for the disabled... and they have a f*****g weight limit that they can handle....

There are some people who are obese because of a disability but there are a lot who aren’t and are taking away the scooters from the old or injured who actually need it

A reason to this might be that people who actually need scooters and thus have them can actually get to and inside the store with them. Where is America you need a car to get to the store

I agree we got to many obese people here. You should have to checkout the carts only for old people and people with disabilities should be allowed to use them. The obese people can walk for 10 minutes to get Cheeto's.

It's not right that people can get that obese in the first place. People die of starvation, and in some places they eat so much they can't walk. Do you see what's wrong with this picture?

There is some sort of debate whether jaywalking is or isn’t frowned upon in Germany - many people believe that the Germans are sticklers for traffic etiquette when it comes to walking across a street on a red light, and, indeed, Germans will stand even when it would be safe to cross - for the sake of setting the right example for any nearby children. So, it might be the same everywhere.
