We Traveled Around Iceland In A Mini Camper And Photographed The Beautiful Iceland – Part 1

Last year in September, we booked flights to Iceland for July 2019 with WowAir. Both me and my girlfriend wanted to go there for a long time and we were super excited about it. Earlier in March, Wowair collapsed but we still managed to secure tickets with another airline on the same date.

We also rented a mini camper and the idea was to travel around the island. We drove around and capture some of the most touristic and not-so touristic spots. Here is our journey told with photos.

    Öxarárfoss Waterfall

We spend the first day in Hafnarfjörður because we were supposed to pick our camper from there the next day. Early in the morning next day, we picked our car and started our journey. We decided to start with Golden circle and Þingvellir National Park was our stop. We walked around here is the picture of Öxarárfoss waterfall from there.

    Haukadalur

Our second stop was Haukadalur. A valley full of natural hot water springs and Geysirs can hurl boiling water up to 70 meters in the air.

    Kerið

Kerið which is a volcanic crater lake was our 3rd and last stop in Golden circle.

    Seljalandsfoss

Later, we would drive to Seljalandsfoss. The waterfall drops 60m and you can walk behind the falls into a small cave.

    Skógafoss

We continued our journey towards south and came across Skógafoss which is a waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline.

Hands down it was the best waterfall of the day and it wasn’t even part of plan. We saw it while driving from the road and we took a turn to get there. Totally worth it!

    DC-3 Plane Wreckage site

Driving further, DC-3 Plane Wreckage site was also on my list as I’ve seen some nice photos around the plane. My girlfriend was skeptical of the place but we still decided to go there. It’s a 2 hours round trip walk from parking.

We went there and it turned out to be not that great spot. A lot of tourists taking there photos next to plane. After that we decided to call it a day and went to camp in Vik.

The next day, we started our day from Vik and here is a photo we took near Vik.

    Reynisfjara

Our first stop is Reynisfjara, the black beach in South Iceland known for it’s black sand beach, cliffs and rock formations.

The beach was used as filming location in Game of Thrones where the men in the night’s watch are guarding the wall.

    Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon which is an incredible canyon on the south coast of Iceland was our second stop for the day.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon was used as the location for the dragon flight scene in the first episode of Season 8, when Jon and Daenerys fly the dragons together for the first time. After flying down the canyon they land at Skogafoss, which isn’t too far away!

    Svartifoss

Our next stop was Vatnajökull National Park. We first did a small hike to Svartifoss. Svartifoss means black falls and it is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name.

    Skaftafellsjökull

Skaftafellsjökull is a glacier tongue spurting off from Iceland’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull. We hiked to a mountain next to it to get the view of this awesome ice tounge.

    Fjallsárlón

Fjallsárlón is a glacier lake at the south end of the Icelandic glacier Vatnajökull. In my opinion, it’s one of the most jaw dropping site in South of Iceland.

    Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon, bordering Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. Its still, blue waters are dotted with icebergs from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier.

We could see many icebergs floating around.

    Diamond Beach

Diamond beach is next to Jökulsárlón. The Glacier Lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving chunks of ice on a black sand beach that looks like diamonds.

    A seal at Diamond Beach

There were several seals hanging out on the other side of Diamond beach because it was rather empty. I managed to capture this photo of beautiful sea puppy.

    Icelandic Horses near Höfn

We spent the night in city of Höfn and then next day we came across these beautiful horses right outside the town.

    Stokksnes Beach

Next, we drove to Stokksnes beach to see the Vestrahorn Mountain. It’s a mountain shaped like a bat hence it’s also called Batman mountain.

The beach itself it’s also very unique with black sands and green plantation and blue water.

After spending some time there, we started driving and only from a distance we could appreciate the fact that why this mountain is called Batman mountain.

    Öxi Pass

Instead of going through the highway, we took a a small road through a mountain pass. It was quite an adventure. Road was very unstable and it was really foggy but nevertheless, views were great.

    Lagarfljót

In Icelandic folklore, the Lagarfljótsormur or Lagarfljót worm is an Icelandic lake monster purported to live in Lagarfljót, a lake by the town of Egilsstaðir. Sightings have been logged since 1345 and continue into the 21st century, including a 2012 video supposedly showing the creature swimming.

We only saw this monster at the beginning of lake :)

    Puffins at Borgarfjörður Eystri

We were not very impressed with the lake, so instead of going to town we were supposed spend the night, we decided to go to Borgarfjörður Eystri to search for Puffins. We arrived there around at midnight. Sun was still out and we saw 1000s of Puffins.

My girlfriend couldn’t be more happier!
