We Kept Finding Dogs On The Brink Of Death In Detroit – So We Started A Dog Rescue (13 Pics)
In Detroit, there is an epidemic of stray dogs. We couldn’t look away. A few thousand dogs later – we are finally opening our dog shelter to save even more.
A radical no-kills approach to dog rescue – and a love for the city, its dogs and people.

This girl lived alone in an abandoned house
There were no other houses on the street, and the mailman was the only one feeding her.
We used our trap to secure her and spent weeks earning her trust
We named this sour dog Citrus. She growled at us for more than a week and wouldn’t allow any handling.
Gotcha! Before you froze to death
We love making a difference, but it is hard work.
We rely on tips to locate dogs
We sadly have way too much to do, and we are on call 365 days a year. Detroit has a very dysfunctional, underfunded Animal Control agency. We are solely crowd-funded.
Pandore was found by a firefighter
She had no fur on her butt then, but it all grew back!
Embedded chains and collars are super common
Here we are using bolt cutters to remove an embedded chain on Pingwee.
This amount of matting is not unusual
Good thing we have a groomer who is great with scared dogs.
Puffin had given birth in a dilapidated garage
Luckily, we got everyone out to safety, and adopted.
Hatchi was dumped because of his massive cancer
We see that a lot in senior dogs. Sadly, Hatchi only had a matter of days to spend with us before he had to go.
Kerouac in the truck after being saved
He is enjoying his first meal in what seems to be quite a while.
Mushroom is not supposed to look like this
He was also dumped and handed to us by the finders. His face will round out after some months of eating!
This girl was dumped by the river
She was luckily spotted in time, and we were called. Her growth is so stunted, that we named her Pixel.
Our shelter is just about finished
Endless amounts of volunteer hours for the dogs of Detroit.
