Man Gets An Ultimatum From His Vegan Girlfriend Who Demands He Give Away His Cat
Correct me if I’m wrong, but when people fall in love with someone really hard, they’re ready to sacrifice anything. Well, almost. We can stop biting nails, eat less junk, and swap that beloved gross hoodie we never part with for a nice shirt, but when it comes to pets, it’s a whole different story.
A 22-old-man has been dating his girlfriend for 7 months and according to him, “she’s amazing and we’re super compatible in a lot of ways.” She’s also a vegan, a fact which shouldn’t make a whole lot of difference, but the way she approaches veganism kind of does.
One day, the girlfriend sat him down and said that there was no future until the author gives his beloved furry friend away. Her reason was—it violates the principles of veganism. Read the full story right below and share what you think of the whole situation in the comment section!

In an update post the author later released on r/relationship_advice, he made it clear that his girlfriend’s extreme views on domestic cats are not representative of the vegan/vegetarian community as a whole. “I do think that, sometimes, new vegans can be a little overzealous. In reality, most of us are just doing the best that we can to not hurt animals!”
For those who’re wondering, the author has also said that they broke up, “obviously.” “I would never, ever give up my cat Mittens,” he said and added that “Many users said that this situation was about control, not veganism, and looking back, I do see a pattern of control on my girlfriend’s part.”
The author concluded that he was “blind to it” and given the issues they had, he decided it was best for them to part ways. The author also shared a picture of his furball Mittens which you can find under an Imgur link right here.

It doesn't make sense to me either. Carnivores are there to keep herbivores and pests from eating up their resources and weeding out the sick and weak. It makes the population of herbivores stronger and keeps disease from ripping through the herds. They should study up on Biology and Ecosystems to see why there needs to be a balance in the world.

I tried following different vegans and things because I want a more plant based diet for environmental reasons and there were a few like the gf and it really made me have a bad opinion of veganism. Unfair of me because I now a lot of vegans are not like that. Basically just stopped going to forums and things and stick to researching vegan recipes. But the cat thing is a thing in the vegan community and that was my breaking point with any online vegan communities.

That's not a wonderful relationship. She's a bully. She has a nerve demanding he get rid of Mittens. Regardless of any difference in ideologies, Mittens was there first. If he got rid of her, he would always regret it. He would also resent the girlfriend for it. Finally, I know no vegan who thinks owning a pet is against vegan principles. We have a choice. Domesticated animals (or any other animals) don't.

So why is she vegan? Is it a environmental thing then rather than an animal advocacy then? Sounds like she wants all carnivores to die. I have heard of this, vegans pretty much torturing and slowly killing their cats by trying to force them to have vegan diets. Cats have a 100% meat based diet, I understand that some vegans don't want cats because they don't want to buy the food for them and that is honestly the more responsible answer, but when you are asking someone to give up their pet, sending links about killing off cats, what you have is a heartless, horrible, nasty human being who has an inability to think or behave rationally because they are so beyond delusional about their own superiority. She has cult like devotion to this and that is her personality. If you had a kid and they required more protein in their diet and a nutritionist suggested they eat eggs would she give the kid up for adoption? Rip that band-aid off and go through the pain of the break up now.

it's quite ironic for someone who is "against cruelty" to ask someone to give up their cat. the cat is obviously well-cared for and loved. a beautiful pet/ animal should never b kicked out or given up due to clashing ideologies. veganism is a human concept and practice. please don't drag compulsory carnivores into this debate. cats need non-vegetarian food or they can suffer from severe digestive and nutritional issues. if u r a vegan and if u still want a pet, please consider a strictly herbivore animal. but be cautious, some of the medicines and dietary supplements may have animal (non-veg) components. if u r a vegan, think it through before adopting a voiceless creature. spread the love.

As a vegan, she is the type of vegan us other vegans hate because she gives us a crap name. I have 4 fur babies and they are spoilt rotten, have everything they need and will be with me forever. Most vegans have animal companions and those rescue animals we have need loving homes. I am not a vegan advocate for the most part. (I cannot be vegan and many make me feel guilty for loving to eat meat and milk and the fact that, if you don't add specific nuts and stuff, it can become quickly unhealthy) But I do know that many vegans are good and normal people. This lady is too toxic and radical to be a proper vegan. As for you, you seem like a cool person and good luck on your veganism :).

I do not think this is about veganism, it is about exercising control and using an idiology to justify it. Whoever argues for a life that is free of cruelty against conscious beings should include humans in that! Besides, a vegan by believe and not by idiology would understand that giving away Mittens would be cruel on the animal in the first place.

Well, first thing to realize that vegan does not equal cruelty free life. Sad truth and someone blindly stating that is red flag already (just not possible in today's society, I'm sorry). Being against cats (or pets) and send link as she did sounds to me like full blown extremist idea, no better than any other ideological extremism. If this was no topic for you previously how many more things would come up later? How would you like to have children, are they actually allowed to brest feed? (i don't know, I heard both yes and no answers). Let it go (her). It will be good.

It's this kind of vegan who gives the rest of us a bad name. I was also told that I was not a "real vegan" because I have a cat. I have since stopped calling myself a vegan and started telling people (when appropriate) that I eat a plant-based diet. I don't want to be a member of that club.

Don't let the idiots take our name! It seems to me, a bit, that every time one vegan acts like being nuts, possibly because of being nuts, many people make a connection that simply isn't there. It isn't even about eating in the first place, it's only the most visible part ... but there's more to it. And living with a cat does not violate any of it.

I am vegan for 13 years now and take it very serious. But this story reminds me of my ex-husband. He was NOT vegan but didn't like cats and other pets. So I gave my two cats away for him. We were married 10 years and I realized, that people who hate animals also hate humans. Thanks God he took an animalhating girlfriend after 10 years and we got divorced. Now my house ist full of animals, that are fed naturally after their necessities. For me its important, that they are not forced to live in an unhealthy or sad way. So please, think about it: Who forces a loved one to put away a loved pet for his own sake ist not LOVING the partner. NO WAY.

Many vegan people have pets, but some prefer dogs over cats. Reason being...with dogs you can get away with feeding them a vegan diet for a while. Not so with cats who are Carnivores. You feed the same vegan diet to a dog and a cat...the dog will probably still be healthy weight in a few months, the cat will be emaciated. That being said, this is not about a vegan who is thinking of the welfare of the animal because most pet owners spoil the crap out of their pets...this is about her asserting control over the relationship.

Humans have the option to decide on a meat free diet but many animals don't. Simply 'giving the cat away' doesn't mean it would stop eating meat. What it WOULD do is cause trauma for it and its owner - which is cruel to both. If you don't want to watch an animal east meat then fair enough - don't watch it. But remember, they don't have a choice..

A woman that cannot show enough empathy to let you keep a cat that was an important part of your life and which you probably consider part of your family is not worth keeping (unless she is deadly allergic to cats). My mother said that usually people that do not like dogs, there is also something else wrong with. I guess same thing goes for cats. If she cannot give you room to have a pet because of her twisted ideologi, that is not an equal relationship, but her trying to take waaay to much control.I am a big fan on talking and comming to common understanding, but if you cannot convince her and had to get rid of either of them, I would keep Mittens. It is fine that she has her principles and want to chance the world for the better, as long as she only takes steps in that direction on her own behalf, but it becomes too extreme when she tries to enforce her beliefs onto other people. She's stupid. But, as in the comments above - this is not by any means about veganism, it's about control. Also - I'm a vegan and adopted a cat this year. I wouldn't get any animal from a breeder, but those who already are there deserve a loving home, and as I had one to offer, and the cat's situation was changeworthy (living with another cat, both hating each other, fighting all the time - and her previous humans weren't that good either...), this was not much of a question. And, of course, the cat is not a vegan. She even is allowed to eat spiders ... the lucky spiders meet me first, the unlucky ones meet her.

It was her choice to become a radical vegan. I have seen this situation many times, even experienced it myself. My advice is ALWAYS keep the cat (or dog). That's what i did and have had no regrets. The cat was more affectionate, more loyal, housebroken, and didn't expect me to cook or clean or do its laundry.

A cat "playing" with a mouse that is has caught, letting it go, just to catch it again, that is actually a quite evil way to behaviour. Sometimes they will not even eat the mouse because they aren't really hungry -hunting them is just a sport. Cats may charm you with the large eyes and fluffy nature, but they can behave like some real selfish bastards sometimes. That being said, I think the girlfriend in the story has no clue about the bond that can arise between a human and a pet. It seems like she see the cat as an object she doesn't like, and do not realise have important it is for her boyfriend. To me it looks like she either has no clue about what to expect from and how to behave in a relationship. Then she has a hell of a lot to learn in a very short time if that relationship is going to end well. The alternative is worse that she is a manipulative psychopath, who is fully aware about the harm that she is causing, but just doesn't care that she is breaking another human being.

[2/2] eradicating lions because you feel sorry for the zebras is misunderstood kindness, as it would seriously screw up the ecosystem, harming every animal. Furthermore cat food is mostly made from scapmeat, which is not found worthy af human consumption, so I seriously doubt that any animals were slaughtered to feed the cat. Yes cats eat roadents, keeping the population in check, just like foxes and birds of prey do. Otherwise we would see an explosion cuasing an infestion of these pests. To me, she either got things seroiusly wrong, or the cat is just a lame excuse to let you down gently, feeling it was your own choice. Don't give in on such important matters, or you will have to do that for the rest of your life.

She was mostly a control freak. She could even have wanted to claim every last bit of his affection for herself, not just disliked cats. She may have rationalised the way to squeeze Mittens out via her “the principles of veganism” even if she knew deep down it was wrong. As karma has it he’ll land with a lovely cat-loving lady (vegan or otherwise) and she’ll rebound to a cold, uncompromising guy (vegan or otherwise). The way it goes!

Anyone who demands you give up a loved pet for any reason is NOT worth it. My husband discovered, after we were married, that my cat triggered his allergies. It got worse over the years....but he lived happily with her, snuggled her, fed her, cleaned her box, took her to the vet, etc., etc., for nearly 17 years until she passed away! Then and only then did he ask that we not get another cat. That is how you do it! We now have two silly dogs, and while I miss having a cat, I would feel awful putting him through the allergies that got so bad in my cat's later years just so I could have what I want. This girlfriend sounded like a total wacko. What is it about veganism that sends some people over the edge? I've met vegans who are "my way or get lost!" and I just don't understand it.

Each of my cats eats the equivalent of 100g of meat per day... worth every gram. In their combined nearly 18 years, they have ever only killed one bird between them... I think the world would be a much better place with fewer human beings who each consume many times what a cat (or small dog) does.

The world isn’t vegan. There are food chains in nature with lots of animal species (not to mention plants and fungi) feeding on other animals. To advocate for the extinction of carnivores shows utter ignorance as to how the world works. Without carnivores there is compromised population control for many prey animals who will eat all the vegetation and then die of hunger and disease.

That's incredibly stupid! Vegan principles are NOT about "everything that eat meat is bad". I can hear that it MAYBE violates anti speciesism principles, but not even, see: my mom is vegan and "own" cats, as she gives them a home, love and food. It's people like this girlfriend that make veganism look bad. You can't say that you are cruelty free and then demand that your boyfriend give up his cat. Her reason is so ridiculous. The cat would still eat meat with a different. I think that this is another case of a girlfriend being jealous of her boyfriend's female cat. I think the GF needs to rewatch the Lion King. Pay special attention to the “circle of life” part. Side note, is there such thing as a non-outspoken vegan? They tout being cruelty free while living a lifestyle that is more chemical and plastic dependent.

There is such thing as a non-outspoken vegan. My brother is one, you won't know he is vegan unless you have a meal with him. He rarely talks about it coz he believes in choice. It's his choice to be a vegan and understands not everyone can or wants to be vegan. He is a silent vegan lol.

I think she just doesn't like the cat and is using it as an excuse. No vegan I know would say to an existing pet owner to give away their animal although would caution against getting another one. It is not vegan to kill the cat (and also morally abhorrent) so the cat must be fed and cared for the rest of its life. Whether that happens at your home or a cat shelter (where they could be put down) is irrelevant. I would also note that vegans are so because humans have a choice to eat meat this is not the same of other animals and as yet I have not seen any advocating to exterminate or convert all carnivorous animals from the planet.

Feeding a carnivore a plant based diet is on par with fattening herbivorous livestock on feeds containing bone meal, or other meat based products. It is CRUEL. I was vegetarian for over 20 years before eating meat again. Most of the meat I eat, is pasture raised. Eating a diet that Nature intended. If you really care about the wellfare of animals, then you should demand meats that are not fattened by forcing an Unhealthy diet on them. (Yes I get the irony. But healthy animals are going to be healthier meals. Plus why can't their short lives be happier?)

The girlfriend is woefully misinformed. She is showing her true side and she is attempting to control him and his life. And NEVER TRY TO MAKE A CAT A VEGAN. They will die from it. Cats require Taurine and other amino acids that they get from meat. When i worked in a pet food store there was a couple that tried to force their cats on a vegan diet, contrary to their vet's advice. One of their cats died from it, one got very sick.

Researchers have found that cats were the ones seeking the closeness to humans. Thing is, if she is so radical in her believes, she will probably raise her future children (in case she wants any) on a vegan diet and that can be harmful and dangerous in a child's developement when done wrong. So probably a good time to think about if that is also a deal breaker.

I (44) have been vegan for 20 years, my husband is also vegan (but cheats sometimes and goes vegetarian if someone offers a tasty dessert. 😉) I’ve had cats my entire life, I prefer them to most people. I definitely prefer my obligate carnivore friends to vegans who argue for their extinction or re-homing. This is a massive red flag, it will get worse over time. We keep our cat friends inside so they don’t hurt local wildlife, and feed them high quality meat food. Never feed any cat “vegan cat food,” it is definitely animal cruelty. My cats are rescues. They harm far less animals living inside a home than wandering the streets. Let the girlfriend go to the pound and share some fish with Mittens! 🎉

Nope, not crazy. GF is being manipulative. She doesn't want a pet--that's her issue. It has nothing to do with veganism. My husband and I are lifelong vegans (97 years of being vegan between us!) and whilst we've never gone out and gotten a pet, my husband and I rescue animals all the time and we never stop to ask what sort of diet they are on--we just do it and we take care of them until they die. You've made some huge changes going vegan (and we do hope you stick with it and not let this unfortunate experience taint your opinion of veganism) Your GF should have told you upfront her issues about Mittens/cats/pets in general. My husband and I had loads of discussions on what was "acceptable" and what were "deal breakers" in our relationship, and if she is a truly compassionate vegan, your GF should have been adult enough to not let things get so serious between you two. My husband and I have been lifelong vegans (about 97 years between the two of us!) and this is what we think: you have clearly been taking care of Mittens for longer than you've been in this relationship. You have a duty of care to your pet. You don't just get rid of a pet because they fall out of fashion. Like someone else wrote above, you don't congratulate yourself on saving the environment if you dump all your trash in someone else's backyard. She should have been honest and upfront with you from the start if you having a cat [a meat-eating cat] was a deal breaker for her. My husband and I had many "vegan discussions" before we got married and whilst we've gone out and gotten a pet, my husband rescued animals (part of the reason I love him so much!) and we take care of them until the day they die. In one way it makes sense to me - keeping animals as pets is questionable - but - as a vegan my self, there is no way I would get rid of my cat. He's from a shelter and I think - and feel - that we need to support animals that are already 'owned' and then dumped. I wouldn't buy a pet, because like with fast fashion and plastic, that's just saying that there's a market for them and please keep on producing them - supply and demand - that's a whole other topic though.

I grew up vegan many moons ago before most people even knew what it meant. I’m healthy and developed well with no physiological issues. By middle school, I started sneaking meat in dairy via slumber parties and other means outside of my house & it typically ended with minor temp GI issues. By age 17, I began eating a meat diet and now, later in my older years, I eat a health-based diet regardless of food categories. What I’ve noticed with veganisn, raw foodism, other categorized diets and to some extent vegetarianism, is that a certain population of any diet has eating disorders. Being vegan isn’t usually, but really can be, a food control issue. Equally, it can be a psychological issue. I’m not suggesting that any measurable percentage of any dietary ethos is rooted is issue, but it’s glaringly apparent when the person is vegan or similar. This guys ex-gf isn’t vegan wholly for the cruelty aspect. That’s be hypocritical to a certain extent. It appears veganism for her is about control

All I see are red flags in the relationship..Humans are inteligent and get to choose what they eat. Animals in general on the other hand are instinct based. my wife & I thoroughly discussed everything during the pre-nup pastoral counseling conferences. Every Sat. afternoon for six weeks we talked out shared faith, kids, how many kids, where to live (in a 3 y.o. house I already owned), how much money I made (she was out of work), career futures & outlook, sex, what kind of sex, how often, what our decorating tastes were, and pets. I had a cat already. She said she did not like cats. The compromise was that the cat would stay outside & sleep in the garage. So after we get back from the honeymoon, the cat has kittens. She demanded that I take them all to the pound & have them put to sleep. What? We had both agreed the cat would stay outside & be an outdoors cat. What changed? Her exact words were, "She goes, or I go." This must have been the first time in her life the spoiled brat didn't get her way upon demand. She proceeded to lie her way out of the marriage. The lies got bigger and bigger past the breaking point.

It doesn't make sense to me either. Carnivores are there to keep herbivores and pests from eating up their resources and weeding out the sick and weak. I tried following different vegans and things because I want a more plant based diet for environmental reasons and there were a few like the gf and it really made me have a bad opinion of veganism. Unfair of me because I now a lot of vegans are not like that. Basically just stopped going to forums and things and stick to researching vegan recipes. We were married 10 years and I realized, that people who hate animals also hate humans. Thanks God he took an animalhating girlfriend after 10 years and we got divorced. Now my house ist full of animals, that are fed naturally after their necessities. For me its important, that they are not forced to live in an unhealthy or sad way. Many vegan people have pets, but some prefer dogs over cats. Reason being...with dogs you can get away with feeding them a vegan diet for a while. Not so with cats who are Carnivores. You feed the same vegan diet to a dog and a cat...the dog will probably still be healthy weight in a few months, the cat will be emaciated. That being said, this is not about a vegan who is thinking of the welfare of the animal because most pet owners spoil the crap out of their pets...this is about her asserting control over the relationship.

Humans have the option to decide on a meat free diet but many animals don't. Simply 'giving the cat away' doesn't mean it would stop eating meat. What it WOULD do is cause trauma for it and its owner - which is cruel to both. If you don't want to watch an animal east meat then fair enough - don't watch it. My mother said that usually people that do not like dogs, there is also something else wrong with. I guess same thing goes for cats. She's stupid. But, as in the comments above - this is not by any means about veganism, it's about control. Also - I'm a vegan and adopted a cat this year. I wouldn't get any animal from a breeder, but those who already are there deserve a loving home, and as I had one to offer, and the cat's situation was changeworthy (living with another cat, both hating each other, fighting all the time - and her previous humans weren't that good either...), this was not much of a question. And, of course, the cat is not a vegan. She even is allowed to eat spiders ... the lucky spiders meet me first, the unlucky ones meet her.

A cat "playing" with a mouse that is has caught, letting it go, just to catch it again, that is actually a quite evil way to behaviour. Sometimes they will not even eat the mouse because they aren't really hungry -hunting them is just a sport. Cats may charm you with the large eyes and fluffy nature, but they can behave like some real selfish bastards sometimes. That being said, I think the girlfriend in the story has no clue about the bond that can arise between a human and a pet. It seems like she see the cat as an object she doesn't like, and do not realise have important it is for her boyfriend. To me it looks like she either has no clue about what to expect from and how to behave in a relationship. Then she has a hell of a lot to learn in a very short time if that relationship is going to end well. The alternative is worse that she is a manipulative psychopath, who is fully aware about the harm that she is causing, but just doesn't care that she is breaking another human being.

Furthermore cat food is mostly made from scapmeat, which is not found worthy af human consumption, so I seriously doubt that any animals were slaughtered to feed the cat. Yes cats eat roadents, keeping the population in check, just like foxes and birds of prey do. Otherwise we would see an explosion cuasing an infestion of these pests. She was mostly a control freak. She could even have wanted to claim every last bit of his affection for herself, not just disliked cats. She may have rationalised the way to squeeze Mittens out via her “the principles of veganism” even if she knew deep down it was wrong. Anyone who demands you give up a loved pet for any reason is NOT worth it. My husband discovered, after we were married, that my cat triggered his allergies. It got worse over the years....but he lived happily with her, snuggled her, fed her, cleaned her box, took her to the vet, etc., etc., for nearly 17 years until she passed away! Then and only then did he ask that we not get another cat. That is how you do it! We now have two silly dogs, and while I miss having a cat, I would feel awful putting him through the allergies that got so bad in my cat's later years just so I could have what I want. This girlfriend sounded like a total wacko. What is it about veganism that sends some people over the edge? I've met vegans who are "my way or get lost!" and I just don't understand it.

The world isn’t vegan. There are food chains in nature with lots of animal species (not to mention plants and fungi) feeding on other animals. To advocate for the extinction of carnivores shows utter ignorance as to how the world works. Without carnivores there is compromised population control for many prey animals who will eat all the vegetation and then die of hunger and disease.

I think she just doesn't like the cat and is using it as an excuse. No vegan I know would say to an existing pet owner to give away their animal although would caution against getting another one. It is not vegan to kill the cat (and also morally abhorrent) so the cat must be fed and cared for the rest of its life. Whether that happens at your home or a cat shelter (where they could be put down) is irrelevant. I would also note that vegans are so because humans have a choice to eat meat this is not the same of other animals and as yet I have not seen any advocating to exterminate or convert all carnivorous animals from the planet.

Feeding a carnivore a plant based diet is on par with fattening herbivorous livestock on feeds containing bone meal, or other meat based products. It is CRUEL. I was vegetarian for over 20 years before eating meat again. Most of the meat I eat, is pasture raised. Eating a diet that Nature intended. If you really care about the wellfare of animals, then you should demand meats that are not fattened by forcing an Unhealthy diet on them. (Yes I get the irony. Cats require Taurine and other amino acids that they get from meat. Researchers have found that cats were the ones seeking the closeness to humans. Thing is, if she is so radical in her believes, she will probably raise her future children (in case she wants any) on a vegan diet and that can be harmful and dangerous in a child's developement when done wrong. I (44) have been vegan for 20 years, my husband is also vegan (but cheats sometimes and goes vegetarian if someone offers a tasty dessert. 😉) I’ve had cats my entire life, I prefer them to most people. I definitely prefer my obligate carnivore friends to vegans who argue for their extinction or re-homing. This is a massive red flag, it will get worse over time. We keep our cat friends inside so they don’t hurt local wildlife, and feed them high quality meat food. Never feed any cat “vegan cat food,” it is definitely animal cruelty. My cats are rescues. They harm far less animals living inside a home than wandering the streets. Let the girlfriend go to the pound and share some fish with Mittens! 🎉

Nope, not crazy. GF is being manipulative. She doesn't want a pet--that's her issue. It has nothing to do with veganism. My husband and I are lifelong vegans (97 years of being vegan between us!) and whilst we've never gone out and gotten a pet, my husband and I rescue animals all the time and we never stop to ask what sort of diet they are on--we just do it and we take care of them until they die. You've made some huge changes going vegan (and we do hope you stick with it and not let this unfortunate experience taint your opinion of veganism) Your GF should have told you upfront her issues about Mittens/cats/pets in general. My husband and I had loads of discussions on what was "acceptable" and what were "deal breakers" in our relationship, and if she is a truly compassionate vegan, your GF should have been adult enough to not let things get so serious between you two. This is not a vegan issue, it's a "growing up" one. Good luck to you!

My husband and I have been lifelong vegans (about 97 years between the two of us!) and this is what we think: you have clearly been taking care of Mittens for longer than you've been in this relationship. You have a duty of care to your pet. You don't just get rid of a pet because they fall out of fashion. Like someone else wrote above, you don't congratulate yourself on saving the environment if you dump all your trash in someone else's backyard. She should have been honest and upfront with you from the start if you having a cat [a meat-eating cat] was a deal breaker for her. My husband and I had many "vegan discussions" before we got married and whilst we've gone out and gotten a pet, my husband rescued animals (part of the reason I love him so much!) and we take care of them until the day they die. You're a good person for even caring for Mittens' digestive issues. At this point your GF is just being manipulative and you should walk away. It sounds like she will never be happy.

I do not like the way domestic or feral cats go out to kill so many birds. Birds are endangered and even going extinct from it. Millions of birds die is what i have heard. Cats are okay in their place but roaming loose is not okay unless they are on a farm killing mice or doing something useful. .' if you love your cat more than her, so be it. But don't act as if you are morally superior especially if your cat is an actual killer.

This wouldn't be ending over ideology. It would be ending over the GF being a control freak and incapable of communicating. A "me or the cat" should have been brought up long before the relationship got to that level. The mindset that can make that demand is one of insisting on complete control of the relationship, an inability to compromise and ... yeah. No. It's not ideology. That's insane, speaking as a hardcore, very long term vegan. We have a duty of care to other animals. Most vegans have homes filled with rescue animals - dogs, cats, rodents, whatever you can look after. And absolutely abide by the maxim that they're family, they're for life.

In one way it makes sense to me - keeping animals as pets is questionable - but - as a vegan my self, there is no way I would get rid of my cat. He's from a shelter and I think - and feel - that we need to support animals that are already 'owned' and then dumped. I wouldn't buy a pet, because like with fast fashion and plastic, that's just saying that there's a market for them and please keep on producing them - supply and demand - that's a whole other topic though.

I grew up vegan many moons ago before most people even knew what it meant. I’m healthy and developed well with no physiological issues. By middle school, I started sneaking meat in dairy via slumber parties and other means outside of my house & it typically ended with minor temp GI issues. By age 17, I began eating a meat diet and now, later in my older years, I eat a health-based diet regardless of food categories. What I’ve noticed with veganisn, raw foodism, other categorized diets and to some extent vegetarianism, is that a certain population of any diet has eating disorders. Being vegan isn’t usually, but really can be, a food control issue. Equally, it can be a psychological issue. I’m not suggesting that any measurable percentage of any dietary ethos is rooted is issue, but it’s glaringly apparent when the person is vegan or similar. This guys ex-gf isn’t vegan wholly for the cruelty aspect. That’s be hypocritical to a certain extent. It appears veganism for her is about control

All I see are red flags in the relationship..Humans are inteligent and get to choose what they eat. Animals in general on the other hand are instinct based. Just because giving away mittens wouldn't change a thing about what it is going to eat. The ask from your gf is awkward because it ain't solving anything. It's much like closing eyes to not see the truth, and driving some species to extinction. It's a new level of immaturity if you ask me. Remember that love is accommodating, and yours is. my wife & I thoroughly discussed everything during the pre-nup pastoral counseling conferences. Every Sat. afternoon for six weeks we talked out shared faith, kids, how many kids, where to live (in a 3 y.o. house I already owned), how much money I made (she was out of work), career futures & outlook, sex, what kind of sex, how often, what our decorating tastes were, and pets. I had a cat already. She said she did not like cats. The compromise was that the cat would stay outside & sleep in the garage. So after we get back from the honeymoon, the cat has kittens. She demanded that I take them all to the pound & have them put to sleep. What? We had both agreed the cat would stay outside & be an outdoors cat. What changed? Her exact words were, "She goes, or I go." This must have been the first time in her life the spoiled brat didn't get her way upon demand. She proceeded to lie her way out of the marriage. The lies got bigger and bigger past the breaking point.

No vegan diet is safe for cats. They need a specific nutrients that can ONLY be found in meat, nowhere else. They are obligate carnivores, which means they literally need meat to thrive and survive.
