Person Shares A Conversation With An Aggressive Vegan Who Accused Them Of Appropriation Just Because They Enjoy Tofu
Fear me, non-vegans, for I am the mighty tofu gatekeeper, and no meat-lovers shall feast on this delicious food! This is what one internet user nearly sounded like when they started having a cyberbullying sesh at an omnivore, who’d complimented their tofu recipe. Talk about being rude to someone acting nice.
“Tofu is strictly for vegans.” That’s what the self-proclaimed guardian of tofu declared after receiving praise from a beef-eater, who adored the tofu-lovers ‘tofurkey’ (tofu turkey) recipe. What followed was a back-and-forwards exchange that showed just how condescending and arrogant this particular veganism preacher is.
The text messages were uploaded to the ‘Gatekeeping’ subreddit, which has over 654,000 members. According to this online community, gatekeeping is “when someone takes it upon themselves to decide who does or does not have access or rights to a community or identity. /r/gatekeeping is a subreddit for screenshots and stories of gatekeepers in the wild.”

Medical News Today writes that tofu, which is made from soybean curds, is “naturally gluten-free and low in calories. It contains no cholesterol and is an excellent source of iron and calcium.” So it’s clear why vegan dieters, vegetarians, and omnivores are all angling for a bite.
What’s more, tofu is said to improve kidney function and cardiovascular health and may help fight prostate and breast cancer. This makes it a health-goldmine that ought to be shared with everyone, not jealously guarded by just a few.
I’m personally a big fan of meat — give me a steak any day of the week. But I know I should eat more veggies, greens, and other healthy foods. Whether or not you eat or avoid meat, there are numerous benefits of an all-vegan diet.
Healthline argues that vegan diets are richer in certain nutrients like fiber, antioxidants and “beneficial plant compounds”, potassium, magnesium, folate, and vitamins A, C and E. Furthermore, going vegan can help you lose weight, lower your blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. But whatever your dietary preferences, the most important thing is acting like an adult, not an angsty teenager with something to prove and a holier-than-thou attitude.
Internet users reacted to the tofu gatekeeper with scorn
This appropriation b******t needs to stop. I'm going to appropriate the s**t out of anything I like or want. This is my life and I adopt what is best for me, whether it be from my culture or another or whatever.
Now I want to throw an Appropriation Party. Everyone dress, hair, makeup in as many cultures as possible in one outfit, not as a mockery but to look as good as possible, food, alcohol and beverages from just everywhere, music games and entertainment from the entire planet . What holiday can we appropriate for this?

A lot of Vegans are not in it for the health benefits, just the social perks of being perceived as "better than you"
yep and this kind of behavior perpetuates that persona.
Load More Replies...Sooo if Tofu is strict only for vega/vegetarian Indonesian people won't be able to eat it then. -_- We ate tofu almost every day. Tofu is also the cheapest ingredient that you can buy on traditional market.
Just tips to have tofu as a snack : You can fried tofu that has been submerged with water+garlic+salt and then fried it. And then you can make spicy sauce as dipping sauce with this ingredients : Sweet soy sauce (the thick one)+crushed garlic+crushed chillies.. Mix it together and you can dip yout fried tofu in it. :) This is how a lot of Indonesian people eat their tofu with.. "Tahu goreng dan sambal kecap" :)

If we all agree that we don't want to stereotype people maybe we shouldn't be posting articles like this. Maybe not everyone, but plenty of people will read this and walk away dismissively thinking vegans must be crazy and hypocritical.
Exactly. I get the impression they're doing this on purpose. Vegans are treated almost like anti-vaxxers here.
Load More Replies...This is so stupid. Most vegans want other people to eat vegan food, because that's one less animal that is being eaten. Any logical vegan acknowledges that the key to reducing animal suffering and lessening the environmental impact of farming meat is actually through encouraging everyone to reduce their meat intake, not by pressuring people to go vegan or vegetarian. I've never met anyone who thinks this way and I will downvote every single anti-vegan article this site posts.
Tofu, stuffed with meats and/or seafood, is a common preparation throughout Asian countries - China, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese come to mind. Doesn't everyone know mapo tofu is originally made with ground pork? How's about Korean tofu hotpot commonly with meats and/or seafood? This vegan nut job needs to stop appropriating tofu from Asian culture.
I thought that has already been established long ago.

So funny cause it's usually the other way around. I catch so much s**t for eating a plant based diet. That vegan guy was either a troll or an idiot, maybe both, lmao.
I'm vegan and I always encourage non-vegans to eat vegan food. How can you expect people to go vegan when they don't like vegan food? Just recently my great uncle said that he likes Impossible burgers more than burgers made from animals and it makes me so happy! Unfortunately, I don't think he'll ever go vegan but he's going to eat less meat and he won't be funding the slaughter of thousands of animals as much as before, so it is a good step.
'Tofu is strictly for vegans vegetarians' is not true. Tofu is an important ingredient in lots of Chinese and Japanese foods.
I had to do an elimination diet for 2 weeks and basically ate vegan and when I tried the vegan "cheese" I thought labeling it such was appropriating* real, dairy cheese. * While I say it in jest, the thought of eating that product again haunts my dreams.
I love most vegan foods, but vegan cheese is just repulsive

Wow.... as a vegetarian, all I can say is WOW. This guy is insane. Like one of the comments said, as a vegan, the guy should be GLAD that this person is eating meat alternatives. I really can't comprehend the whole 'gatekeeping' mindset some people get into. Can't we happily share the things we enjoy instead of hoarding it greedily like it's somehow going to mean less for us? Also, this guy is such an idiot. Where the hell does he think tofu even came from?
In an effort to promote peace and harmony I'll give up my rights to tofu to any vegan that wants it.
I know several vegans. Two of them are friends of mine. The others? They can f**k off. For the most part, the vegans I have encountered in my life have been zealots for their lifestyle/diet and some have been downright militant. F**k you, anemia boy. I don't need to hear you're a f*****g vegan. Every. Goddamn. Time. We. Eat. A. F*****g. Meal. If you want to be vegan, great! I'm not and have no desire to be so take your self-righteous a*s off to any place other than in my face.
Time to p**s of some vegans: I LOVE TOFU! I love to cut it into thin strips and fry it in bacon grease! It's sooo good! It tastes like bacon, but without the chewy fat!
There are people who are allergic/sensitive to soybeans. Don't worry about me eating your precious curds, it makes me itch. In fact, let me request you get your soy everything out of MY foods AND ink. Don't fake my hamburgers with your plants, it will make me ill.
Sometimes I eat vegetarian options at restaurants purely because its tasty :) I couldn't give up meat but incorporating a few vegetarian meals into my life couldn't do harm either
My household is a lot like that. We eat lots of veggies, pasta, beans, eggs, and cheese; fish when it's on sale, a rotisserie chicken once in a while, and other meat like pork chops or ground beef pretty rarely because we're poor. There are so many amazing veggie burgers out there now, they've become a major staple in our freezer!

Bloody ridiculous! Has this person never heard of Meat Free Monday? Launched by Sir Paul McCartney "The campaign encourages people to help slow climate change, conserve precious natural resources and improve their health by having at least one plant-based day each week." I've followed vegetarian diets before, but for me, my preferred mix is the best of both. Some days I don't eat any meat, some I'll have meat at one meal. Some people just genuinely enjoy vegetarian meals, even if they still eat meat at other times. I could never be vegan, I love cheese far too much. As stated above, if everyone had just one meat free day a week it could make a huge difference to our planet. Bad vegan! They're the militant types that give other vegans a bad name.
Something is only "important" if we make it so. Being "vegan" is just as important as being a "trash collector" or a being a "good father". What's important to you is not important to others. Not everyone shares your world views, religion, politics, or feelings. And demanding respect is a sure fire way to not get it.
Earth and animals are important to you and everyone whether you accept it or not.

Next thing will be: You're not allowed to eat fruits and vegetables when you're not vegan because it's "appropriation"... :|
I should have counted all those times someone told vegans, that they can't have burgers or anything sausage shaped because they are vegan and those shapes and general recipes are only for meat eaters. So yeah.

Do you hear how stupid that argument sounds? It sounds just as stupid for every other instance of claimed "cultural appropriation". This is why we make of you.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I'm calling b******t on this. Never has a single vegan ever given a carnist s**t for not eating an animal. The meat and dairy industries are getting desperate.
So true, it's a f*****g non-story that goes nowhere and plays on the stereotype that Vegans spend all their time telling people what to eat, which I can assure you is the rverse of what happens
Load More Replies...I'm a vegetarian and I despise tofu. I give you permission to eat all of mine!
Is no one going to point out that Tofu isnt "only" for vegans and vegetarians? Tofu's been around since ancient China and there ain't no Vegans or Vegetarians back then. Tofu isn't owned by anyone - everyone can eat it just coz they like it.
Tofu is only for vegans? That's like the equivalent of someone walking up to me while I'm eating carrot sticks and saying, you can't eat that! Carrots are only for rabbits!
I am a huge meat eater and I also LOVE tofu and make meals with it on a weekly basis.
With that kind of militant attitude and intolerance, you can be sure this vegan is a proud member of PETA. Way to encourage meat eaters to try a meatless diet; tell them they're not allowed to eat meat alternatives and then report them. What a douchebag.
I could crack a joke about how the lack of meat caused his brain to shrink but I'm better than that. Yeah.
Not eating animals doesn't cause your brain to shrink...
Load More Replies...The last two years I'm vegeterian for my own reasons. No one in my family We eat all together.. I don't understand the vegans. In human nature is to eat everything. The point is to not overeat meat or waste it to the garbage. One animal sacrificed for us, to feed us or our pets. It deserve our respect. And for me this is the point. Eat less meat, from little farms, that respect the animals. No overconsume. The happiness is not in our food.
To help you understand vegans, I can explain our reasoning. It is human nature to be omnivores, but we don't have to eat animal products to be healthy (as has been proven by thousands of people). The animals are not sacrificed, they are slaughtered needlessly because their flesh tasts good. They don't care if you respect them or say a prayer for them at the dinner table, they don't want to be slaughtered and eaten, they want to live. You're already vegetarian and it is an easy step to veganism! The dairy and egg industries are just as bad as the meat industry.

Tofu is not my favorite food but I do enjoy eating it occasionally. Sometimes I use it in curry instead of meat.
Tofu is rare you absolute tool, you know how much it costs to make that? No, you don't, because you people just consume and eat everything you want, letting the rest of us suffer. People die in the process of making Tofu, the method is secretly kept between generations and it is dangerous to gather the materials, but nooooo, you couldn't give a s**t could you? You don't care that the people making your food could die. No you don't, now stop being such a c**t.
So sue Asian ancestors, they created tofu and tempe, ate them, waaaay before this vegan thingy exist
I eat meat and I drink water. How dare those vegetarians and vegans drink water. That's an appropriation based purely on what is stylish.
Maybe millitant vegans need to realize that Asian cultures have been eating tofu for centuries. There for it is the vegans that are "Appropriating" in the first place.
What does this have to do with militant vegans? Explain.

My problem with these aggressive vegans is that not only is plant protein not as useful to some people (or outright damaging), but in many locations globally it's just not sustainable to expect everyone to be vegan.
@lapetos You're welcome to read about lectins and sensistivity to them, as well as Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome, which may or may not be related, since it's most often triggered by soy or dairy (which of course comes from animals that eat plants). There are also several (admittedly very rare) conditions, primarily found in second- or third-world countries and indigenous populations, that come from severe deficiency of complete proteins. The main problem with a plant-based diet is that plants don't have complete proteins, and therefore the sources of plant protein have to be rotated frequently so nutritional deficits don't occur. I mostly have the point of view that I do from seeing multiple people with rare medical conditions that make it so that veganism does them more harm than good, but I don't recall what any of them were; they may have been the things I've already mentioned, I don't remember.

It’s OK to be vegan. But don’t tell others what to eat and not eat - and don’t claim vegan is natural for humans. No people has been vegan, but some has been almost 100% on an animal diet (inuits for example).
Don’t tell other people what to say. If someone sees you doing something wrong they have every right to speak up. That’s what a society is.

This asswipe should be locked up in a slaughterhouse till he(/she?) admits tofu/soy is for everyone. Does he/she even KNOW that soy is used as cattle feed? For 1lb of beef it takes 70lbs of soybeans as feed. 1(imperial) pound of tofu is made from 1kg of soybeans. And what's left of the soy can still be used for other purposes. Also it takes a 100 times more water to produce 1lb of meat than to grow 1lb of soybeans. And greenhouse gases? 134lbs of CO2 vs 23lbs for beef vs tofu/lb.
I can't have tofu, it makes me sick to my stomach. My husband loves it, though, and he'll often cook it for himself - which is just fine, because he likes cooking anyway. He's no vegan, though. I've followed vegetarian diets before, but for me, my preferred mix is the best of both.
Load More Replies...If they had ever heard of Minimalist Baker, who only shares vegan recipes, which many many vegans refer to, they aren’t vegan or even vegetarian. But what are you going to do, refuse to use their delicious recipes?
Next thing will be: You're not allowed to eat fruits and vegetables when you're not vegan because it's "appropriation"... :|
I should have counted all those times someone told vegans, that they can't have burgers or anything sausage shaped because they are vegan and those shapes and general recipes are only for meat eaters. So yeah.
Load More Replies...Uhm, ok... I had to look up the word 'appropriation', but isn't that litterally what she's doing by saying tofu is only for vegans and vegetarians???
I don't like most meats too, I only like the taste of chicken so I eat it occasionally. I mostly eat meat free meals but it doesn't mean I'm "partly vegetarian" lol. This person is pretty freaky

How is this any different than any of the other "appropriation" claims people make?

Load More Replies...Angry vegan... is there any other kind - they forgot condescending. It's usually angry condescending vegan ;)have a burger and STFU you twats cuz I'll never "appropriate" your b******t, lol!
Wow you sound angry. And I must say that isn't this comment a bit condescending of you?
Load More Replies...Actually, vegans need to stop appropriating Japanese culture by eating so much tofu. As a half Japanese person myself, I am deeply offended. While we're at it, they should stop appropriating rabbit culture as well. Root vegetables are not for you! As a human-rabbit hybrid, I am deeply offended. Finally, they need to stay out of swimming pools and the ocean. As a Japanese, human rabbit hybrid that is also part dolphin, I am deeply offended. Swimming is our thing. It is not for you!
Soo... are non-East-Asian Vegans appropriating East-Asian culture by eating Tofu? OMG - how DARE they??? **slams desk in absolute mock outrage**
Tofu was invented waay before vegans so you can go right ahead and screw off
It’s OK to be vegan.

You wouldn't think that someone who only eats plants would be able to be so aggressive. Not enough protein in his/her diet so can't process his thoughts logically! Too funny! Think I'm going to go out and buy me some tofu right damn now!
I like tofu with pork! Their this dish century's before vegans community

As he said last weekend, "I am not going to pass on perfectly braised short ribs just because I'm mostly a vegetarian...that would be crazy."
Ha! I struck gold! https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Tofu/
I would imagine the majority of psycho, violent , antifa terrorists are vegan
Every vegan I know has leather shoes, purse, or car upholstery. So much for caring about animals.
Every omnivore has those too, dumbass. That isn’t what being vegan even means. It’s about doing what is reasonable to prevent animal harm. Like something any idiot can do like just don’t eat meat. Most people weren’t born vegan and still have old s**t. F*****g duh. Look it up instead of embarrassing yourself.
