My mom went into see a doctor for the first time in like four years (we were broke and had no insurance) and told him she was constantly so physically exhausted she found it extremely difficult to do anything, and even eating was too much. the doctor told her it was depression, and said he’d write up a prescription for her, but my mom insisted it was something else and asked for a blood test. But the doctor told her no, take the meds. My mother told him she’d take the pills if everything was okay with her bloodwork. The doctor finally agreed and immediately told her to go to the hospital, because she had severe anemia and was close to literally dying. She had a blood transfusion and is doing much better now, and surprise, surprise, I’m also anemic :D

Yep. When I had my heart attack in February the female er dr told me I was having a panic attack and it was all in my head. Ended up being anferior myocardial infarction. The worst kind.

It would be my advice to not take an aspirin before a heart attack. Yes, it would prevent it, but chances are it would leave a blood clot that’ll just give you a stroke later. Edit: I was wrong, see my comments down below

Exactly. Stress tests are useless in women. And because we're medically for a longer period of time (if we're treated at all) than men, we don't do as well when they deign to perform surgery.

I called for an ambulance telling them it was my heart. They asked me to walk to the ambulance. I told the Dr at the ER it was my heart, she kept on talking about anxiety symptoms and then reluctantly sent me to the ICU. I told the ICU Dr it was my heart and she kept on talking about indigestion. She even talked about sending me home because I took up space. (This was 2020 during the largest covid wave.) Luckily she talked to a colleague who adviced her to take an ECG. It was indeed my heart. I was sent to another hospital for surgery the Dr there said I probably wouldn't have survived if I had been sent home.

This post pretty much means... all of us women are screwed. I mean... "Chest pain, radiating up the left arm" is pretty specific. Who the heck is going to get checked out after having neck pain? I wake up most mornings with some sort of upper back/neck pain - dang pillow... or... heeey... it's close to that time of the month, I've been getting nausea, bloating, or increased indigestion since I was ... let's see... 14??? Soooo... yeeah... who knows???

Yes of course. But when you look out for what your symptoms can mean for you, it's better knowing what most people with your characteristics experience, because it's more likely to work in that way. And sex is one of those characteristic. Biologically there are differences between men and woman, as we produce different amounts of hormones and the menstrual cycle affects the hormones' production only in one sex. So if on average an episode of heart failure works differently for men and women, it's better knowing it

Ah this is my field! Good news is that we (cardiologists or at lease the group of 10 I work with) are aware that women don't have the same warning signs and symptoms. As a result we tend to order more testing on women. Know your risk factors. They are family history of heart disease, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. If you are concerned about your symptoms make an appointment for a cardiovascular screening. It may save your life. Many people ask what if they don't know their family history? The answer is genetic testing. We test for everything from genetic clotting disorders to markers for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

I lost someone very close who experienced only *some* of these symptoms, so their death came as a complete shock. One day they're snuggled up on the couch, thinking it's another day they're feeling off, then the next — they're gone forever. No goodbyes. Not even one last hug. Nothing. Subtle symptoms like these are no joke. If something feels off or worrisome, don't hesitate. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I experienced severe upper back pain, sudden onset that woke me up. The paramedics basically didn’t think it was a big deal and “asked” me if I want to go to the hospital. 38 years of cardiology nurse here. Of course I want to go. I even explain to them how women’s heart attacks are different. Told me my ECG looked fine. Ya. Right now. By the time I get to the hospital is when it will start to show damage. Got to the hospital and I’m being wheeled past a number of empty cardiac beds. Rule #1! Always treat it like it’s a heart attack until proven otherwise. I get sat in an ambulatory care unit. It’s the closest hospital to where I live. I have firmly decided that I will stay home and die rather than go there again.

Like, if their big toe is turned down and won't move, then they probably have a cramp in their foot. I've found that stretching the cramped muscle makes it go away almost immediately! So, for the foot cramp, you just grab their big toe and gently but firmly pull their toe up away from the cramp. The cramp will resist at first and that's why you have to be firm, but once you get past that the cramp and the pain are gone. Then hold the stretch position for a minute to make sure the cramp doesn't immediately come back.
