You are ignoring the fact that the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, which was why the USA was supporting the Taliban. The USSR was as culpable for the situation as the USA, and perhaps more so. On the other hand, Iraq has not been peaceful since early in the 9th century CE. There were battles over Baghdad every century or so, and the Mongols almost destroyed the city in the 13th century, and Tamerlane almost destroyed the city in the turn of the 15th century. Under the Ottomans, there was constant conflict between the Shia'a an Suni Ottomans. Then there was the British mandate, a kingdom, a military coupe and a brutal dictator, who then picked fights with their neighbors, oppressed religious and ethnic minorities, and committed national suicide by picking a fight with an ally of a super-power. So we have a photo from one of the short periods of peace and prosperity versus a more typical photo of Baghdad...

The Soviets didn't invade Afganistan. They sent troops to support the Afgan government, as per their defense treaty with said government. Ironically, rebellion started because the Afgan government tried to institute a more democratic system, and education for girls. So, in the 80's the USSR was fighting for democracy, and the US was fighting for Feudalism.

You have it totally backwards. This is all lies. The USSR supported (financed, planned, assisted) a Communist coup and insurgency carried out by religious hardliners - extremists and terrorists. The Afghan President was a moderate, he was the one who had presided over the buildout of the university system and the Westernization of the country. Women were not oppressed or barred from education, and there were no religious clothing edicts. Most Afghan women dressed in Western garb.

that's just ignorant. The USSR backed a communist insurgency in Afghanistan, just as they did in Vietnam, that overthrew the previous government. Afghanistan was a rapidly modernizing, politically centrist, increasingly secular and open society before that happened. Women were not second-class citizens, and fundamentalist Islam was limited to a fringe group of wackos with no political power or popular support. The Taliban was just one such fringe group, that was part of the Muslim Brotherhood.

um, no, he got his start as a Soviet Backed anti-western socialist when the Ba'ath took over Iraq with Soviet help to oust the pro-British government. Later Saddam rose up the ranks of the Ba'ath until he took over. For a few years in the 80's when he was fighting Iran, the US supported him against Iran, though to be fair, 5 US flagged oil tankers and a US Navy Frigate were attacked by Iran before the US gave him any weapons support.
