Overworked Employee Quits Because He Wasn’t Getting A Fair Wage, Costs The Company $40 Million

Not paying your employees a fair wage can have disastrous consequences for the company’s bottom line. Some business owners realize this only when it’s far, far too late.

Redditor u/slw_motion_trainwrck opened up about how he quit his low-paying, exhausting IT job at a major multinational company… and how the day after he left work, the business lost $40 million. In three very extensive posts on r/antiwork, the redditor detailed exactly how this happened, and the read is absolutely riveting.

Scroll down for the full story and more details about why exactly the manufacturing company that makes components for the automotive industry lost as much money as it did, dear Pandas. It’s definitely worth your attention. You’ll see just how low companies go and how far from every promise is worth listening to if it’s not in writing.

Financial expert Sam Dogen, the author of ‘Buy This, Not That: How to Spend Your Way to Wealth and Freedom’ and the founder of Financial Samurai, was kind enough to share his opinion with Bored Panda on how to gauge if someone is underpaid.

“The best way to gauge if you are underpaid is to ask your colleagues and other people in your industry what they are getting paid. They might be hard-pressed to reveal their figures at first. Therefore, you can ask for a range and also volunteer your wage and ask for their guidance. Getting average wages for your job based on online websites is not too helpful given their numbers are averages and all over the place,” he told us that employees should ask around to see if they’re being paid a proper wage.

According to financial expert Sam, a good employee knows their value. “The more an employee is irreplaceable, the more valuable the employee is. Therefore, if you know that your business will run just fine without you for one month or longer, you may not be as valuable as you think,” he said. “On the other hand, if you feel your business will suffer if you’re out longer than a week, then you are considered more valuable. No manager wants to lose a valuable employee because it takes a lot of time to find and train a new employee.”

However, the multinational company was less than friendly, and drove itself into a huge financial mess as a result. Here’s the full story

He then summed up the story in one short sentence

It’s natural to have at least some worries about being let go from your job. However, Sam said that we can control this fear by knowing our value as employees and highlighting the benefits that we bring to the company at semi-annual reviews.

“You can also suppress your fear by actually trying to get laid off! It sounds counterintuitive, but if you are truly a valuable employee, you may want to try and negotiate a severance and find a new job for better pay, benefits, and title. Having the courage to try and negotiate a severance means you really know your worth,” the expert said.

I actually wrote a book on how to negotiate a severance entitled, ‘How To Engineer Your Layoff: Make A Small Fortune By Saying Goodbye.’ I negotiated a severance in 2012 worth six years of normal living expenses. I could have worked for another firm after, but I decided to just be free,” he shared.

The redditor shared how he was left being the only person in IT to support 3 factories. All for a measly salary of just $31k per year, while their superior had earned thrice as much when they were doing the same job a while back.

According to u/slw_motion_trainwrck, he was working, on average, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for over a year. He worked every weekend and through all the holidays. Not just Christmas, mind you. He was busy doing his job during birthdays, too: his own, his wife’s, his kids’. That’s no way to live.

Eventually, enough was enough. He was offered a paltry $800 annual pay raise before taxes, so he decided to look for another job with a better salary and working hours. When he finally gave in his two weeks notice, the IT specialist found that the multinational company was doing its best to make his life a living hell.

However, Karma showed up and made the company lose $40 million the day after he officially left his job. You see, the way the manufacturing company’s contracts are set up mean that it pays fines if something happens to its production facilities: if the order isn’t being produced on time, the business loses money.

“When an automotive manufacturer completely shuts down production on about 10 assembly lines… costs add up very quickly. That is hundreds of salaries every single minute to reimburse… so when I say that it cost the company $218,000 per minute, that is an exact factual number,” the redditor noted.

Here’s how people reacted to the story about huge financial losses and management’s refusal to provide their employee with a proper wage

Previously, fitness expert Jack Bly told Bored Panda about the relationship between our health and our jobs. According to him, we’re able to perform better at our jobs the healthier we are. So prioritizing our fitness, diet, and rest is vital if we want to succeed in life.

“To increase our work output, the #1 place I look at is health. Better health leads to more energy, more focus, and more productivity. To improve our health and ultimately our output, we need to make sure we’re doing things like sleeping 7-8 hours consistently, [having] good nutrition, [and maintaining] consistent exercise,” he told us.

“Prioritizing things like workouts actually give us more energy rather than take energy,” he pointed out, saying that there is a “night and day difference in our output” when we eat well, move enough, and get enough sleep.

Jack noted that the hours we work are irrelevant. All that matters is what we do with them. “What truly matters is true output/results you can get. Person A: works 8 hours to get X work done Person B: works 3 hours to get the same X work done. Which person would you rather be?”

The redditor explained why he stuck with his awful job for such a long time, in a very candid follow-up post

Average 16 hours a day for a year? I’m not even going to do that. And no overtime? A salary is for eight hours a day and maybe an occasional hour or two over. The fact that this person is a supposed to be a good IT and worked several years for around $30k and then withstood over a year with that abuse makes me wonder what is wrong with him.

Another sign that IT is not valued is they are considered labor exempt - companies don't have to follow the federal labor laws.

Not always. We live in a Right to Work state. When I took over as DOO of our firm, I immediately gave everyone raises that were almost 1/3 additional to their previous salaries. I also started paying 100% on all medical premiums (from 30%), increased their company-paid life insurance by 300%, doubled their number of sick days and vacation allotments, and created a new bonus structure that ensured most of my workers had an easy way of making bonuses when they performed well. I created fun things at work, started an employee appreciation campaign that my employees really appreciated, and also started being much more flexible about office hours bc I started basing work hours on performance and work quality. My partners thought I had lost my mind at first, but I think our firm is proof that you don't have to be a d**k boss to get good work. Although the flip side of this is that I have to get rid of dead weight as soon as possible, because one bad apple can spoil everything.

That is because promotions aren't based on performance, even if that is what they claim. It's all polictics. From whom you know to how you or your boss communicates. It's basically a perception thing. Most upper management isn't that bright. I have an IT background, worked my way upto a director. Retired early cause I couldn't take working with those guys anymore. Fortunately, I was in a position to do so. By the way, this guy's story doesn't ring true. Too much doesn't make sense related to how IT operates.

I had the same thing happen to me only on a much smaller monetary basis. I was the shipping lady of a fabrication company for a lousy $16.75 an hour and it had taken me almost 3 years to get a .75 cent raise. Upon covid happening I was layed off then a year later they hired a incompetent female worker with zero experience for $17.50 who ended up walking out and quiting. No one wants this job after placing a ad so they displaced a male office worker with no shipping experience by telling him his job has been discontinued but now have zero problem paying him 20+ dollars a hour. They are the epitome of discrimination against woman and wonder why I wouldn't want to reapply to get my job back. DUH!

After 3 years his salary should have been $110,000 even in a low cost area. There's taking advantage of people and then there is just absolutely screwing people. This is the latter.

I'm sure it was. I'd bet the manager got a bonus or higher raise for keeping his department costs low. He was screwing his old coworker for more money. Probably how he paid for that vacation.

So unless this happened prior to the early 1990's. Going to have to call lies on this. Some inconsistencies in his personality for this story to hold true. Wouldn't be gullible enough to stick with the company working those hours and days, yet cynical enough to laugh at the aftermath of leaving. Also this had to be when IT companies were new because any company that loses $218,000 per minute and treats an employee that way, is going to be because they have another employee they can pay the same salary take your spot the second you step out the door. So either his job was greatly exaggerated, or the money moving in that company was greatly exaggerated.

3 plants in the same small town? He did say the IT people don't have access to plants in other regions. And not even small backwood towns don't have decent paying jobs. To say that everyone in town was making minimum wage and was lucky to get full time hours just wreaks of BS. If there is even 1 plant for a multinational company in town there would be some really good paying jobs. Apparently there are 3.

I’ve job hopped for the last 5 years and couldn’t be happier. I’ve doubled my salary just by gaining experience and certifications. It’s amazing how a business will pay 20% more for you if you’re certified but raise your pay by only 2% if they had anything to do with your certification. What a silly way to approach things.

Some falsehoods about jobs and job hunting................1>Companies don't want employees that know what they are doing or are hard workers, all they want is the person who will work for the smallest wage. 2>Job advertisements are NOT geared toward employees, they are geared for the company, to find the cheapest labor possible. 3>Anytime an employee quits or is fired, it costs the company between $15,000 and $50,000 to replace them. 4>Managers used to have to train their employees, as they would know what jobs they had, and the manager trained them according to company standards. For at least a couple of decades now, managers have NO CLUE what their employees do, as they have employees training employees, which costs companies MILLIONS of dollars in F-ups, bad training, and wrong information, as well as bad/costly habits a year. 5>When a company realizes they have a good, honest, hard working intelligent employee on their hands, they abuse them heinously.

You apparently have never been desperate enough for a job to get rid your standards and job requirements. While not all companies want to short change their employees, many easy to get jobs absolutely straight up lie to get you to apply. I was hired as an assistant store manager for a local dollar store and promised $12 an hour. I looked at my first check and was furious to see my rate of $10 an hour. I constantly complained to the Store Manager and District Manager for months till they said it was 'too late to fix it'. I kept that job for 13 months while I was looking for a new job, because I had to have a job to eat. It did not cost them a dime to replace me either... They had another manager 2 days after I turned in my notice. It's dishonest to publicly state as fact that no company will intentionally abuse and lie to you. I can absolutely confirm that many businesses in my area have employees train employees because the managers are too busy to be bothered.

This entire article wreaks of exaggeration. One. In right to work states there are still unions. 2. Labor laws do not allow salaried employees to work 16 hours a day 7 days a week including federal holidays. If you want case law I can supply or you can google it. 3.). No company with 4 billion dollars profit a year has 1 IT guy. nONE. Especially if a system.goes down they lose 218 grand a minute. 4.). No company loses 218 grand a minute for a server going down. In summation I'll take $#*+ that didn't happen for 500 Alex.

It's hard to believe, but in the USA workers have very few rights, and those rights we do have are rarely enforced/followed. It's hard for regular people to fight back. A lawsuit against big business takes years in court and lots of money. Most people don't enough of either. Full time salaried workers are not entitled to overtime in most cases. Unions are rare, especially for office workers. The whole work situation in the USA defies reason and logic. Companies won't pay. They close their stores rather than raise pay to attract workers. It's abusive here and illogical.

This is why I deal with the hassle and stress of being self employed. I do home improvements not IT for a living. Way too many companies operate like this. They will consistently promote the most lazy stupid a*s people as long as they go around talking s**t all the time like a typical poser. Those are who they want running things. I've seen it too many times in my life that I know it's not a coincidence. On the other hand when they see a person who keeps his head down and just works his a*s off, as soon as they identify that trait that person is slated for extreme abuse. They will be kept down and never be rewarded for it. They will get the exact opposite of rewarded for working like that. And those non producers are really good at taking credit for what other people do as well. I once had a 24-year-old cocaine addict hired to be my boss. He ended up ghosting on the company keeping the van,and stealing every tool that had a cord, this was before everything was battery operated.

I’ve worked in IT for 25 years in many industries and companies and never seen that or seen hours like that to match that pay. Sounds like pandering to the /r/antiwork subreddit with a tall tale. Right to work also does not include the right to terminate for what ever reason. Check to see if your state is an At-Will state. That is the kind of law that allows employers to be fired for any reason. Right to work means that you can work for an employer and not be forced to join a union. That's all.

Small companies are just as bad. Will demand the world and give you a meaningless title instead of a raise. Every employee in the company was a "VP" of something. I was responsible for our mail order catalog and ordering (this was 30 years ago before the web.) Set prices, set profit margins, shot the photos, set the type. Layed out the catalogs (4 per year.) Created the magazine ads - 6 full pages per month. My $200K budget was responsible for $3 million in sales. I asked for a raise - I was putting in more and more hours, catalogs were getting bigger (128 and 256 pages, up from 64 pages) and took a lot more time. Had a cot in the office because I spent an average of three nights a week there. They REFUSED to give me a raise because "I did not need the money." I quit after 10 years of this c**p. They were out of business within a year. No more catalogs. No more magazine ads.

an unethical unprofessional company I worked for got rid of me when I turned 55, something of an unspoken policy in that corporation, and yes, as illegal as hell. But they keep getting away with it, need to complain to the justice dept. or somebody... the best revenge & last laugh I had in all of this is that they got rid of my expertise when they got rid of me. When I was handling the job, they had the best A++ quality products available of their main money-producers.... the slackers that took over after me were not as thorough as me in a few key steps.... so guess what, the quality of their main money-making products at that plant has declined to average or less. This has cost them more money than they realize, all quite avoidable with a few extra steps I knew to perform. And yes, I tried to train the slackers what to do, but they just don't care. The joke is abundantly on this unethical company. The bigger joke is they will never figure out how to adequately deal with this.

I worked at a small mfg coming making minimum wage, running 3 full-time depatments by myself. At one point, I worked 21 days, 16 hours a day, consecutively, without a day off. I asked for a 50 cent raise and the gave me 5 cents. I gave my 2 week notice (actually found a new job before giving notice) and left the company. They refused a 50 cent raise but after I left, they had to hire 3 full-time people to do the job I alone had done by myself. The new company bent over backwards to get and keep me. My pay was doubled, then in 4 months I was promoted into management where my existing salary was tripled. This was a company that saw the value in me that the other company wanted to exploit. The almosts always comes out expensive. The cheap company today is long gone (bankrupt). The company I went to is global now. Never underestimate your true value,

Years ago my brother went through almost the exactly same thing, except after four years of the crap, he gave notice and they fired him immediately. The moment they did that, my brother contacted the PD dept, to do what is called a civil stand by, and left with all his equipment which he brought in to begin with that got integrated into the system over all that time. The company had no leg to stand on as everything that company used, my brother brought in. Their POS, their network, everything he brought in was fully documented prior to being brought in, so that company could not claim any part as their own. They tried, but was told by the officer making sure the invoices matched the serials that it's a civil matter. This was a hobby for my brother. It boiled down to taking away a company's super computer, and leaving them with a C64 and 300 baud modem. By time the owner realized he screwed up, which he did by ignoring my brother, he drove his own company into the ground.

I totally empathize with this guy being in IT myself and I’ve been there but, you also need to know when to negotiate and stand your ground. All the signs of a badly managed department were there from day one. Yes easy to roll with if you need the work but not after a year of 16hr per day at the cost of your health and family. 30k per year for IT is criminal let me just say that, after one year he should have played hardball. Oddly enough management respects that. My point is you usually get walked all over only if you let people do that. If you’re in a bind and have no choice, make active plans to leave have an exit strategy. The last 3 months of my last job I was actively taking interviews during my lunch break, I had a few exit plans. Just take charge it doesn’t always work out but you will feel empowered.

In my current position, I recently found out that they changed their mind about upgrading my job. So now I do the bare minimal. Don't do extra time refuse to take leave, then decide at the drop of a hat I need some. I work in administration and I know the place goes downhill when I'm not there, as not one thing in my job is done when I'm not in the office, but when I'm in, can you do this or that as no one else seems to know what to do . It's a govt position as well, told me I typed to slow, so to try to show me up they had a touch typist come in. When she was their I usually spent half a day fixing up her errors. Nice enough person, but silly goofy mistakes. Close to retiring on a decent pension, if the world doesn't go to crap by then. I've also had to do the most ridiculous courses, like how to disarm an unexploded ordnance, responsible firearm training ( I'm in Australia), been taught all the correct signals for directing vehicular traffic around an incident (I'm in an office)

This is my husband to a T except he works for a small food distributor. He works well over 60 hrs a week and the boss writes in 40 on payroll info and not his actual hours. He's the financial support for our family so he doesn't know what to do. This has been going on well over 3 years. Hes worked to death and does the amount of work of 3 people. I wish I could do something

Wow. A lot of ignorant comments... During my corporate career, I've seen corporate management as well as employees engage in just about every type of baseless stupidity imaginable. This is why Dilbert became so insanely popular. I used to post strips on the wall of my cubicle entrance where passerby could read them. They were hand selected to reflect the foolishness we endured. Coworkers would pull me aside and lecture me in a low voice through gritted teeth. "How can you put that up where so and so can see it?" But the suits never read it and even if they had, they were so deeply in denial that it would have went over their heads anyways. My only question revolves around his boss's vacation and his 2 week notice. Was the timing a coincidence? Or was one scheduled based on the other?

Sounds about right with these companies. I had a similar experience, except I was paid $68k, while the dude I worked with made $98 before he took another position at a different company for $127k. I took over his position while making $30k less and twice the workload because there was no one else. The company didn't want to hire another IT to help me and I had to endure a 24/7 schedule because I had to monitor over 100 servers/file server/certificate server/switches and routers at 3 locations with Zabbix and SolarWinds. I quit and got a job with the federal government for $86k and never have to worry about monitoring the network.

I used to be in the field of commercial two-way radio installation and repair. The manufacturer's sales team sold some dash mounted two-way radios to a crop duster pilot training school. The problems started when I was given the task of trying to modify surplus flight helmets to work with the commercial two-way radio. The boom mics had to be replaced, which wasn't cheap, and an adapter box built with an audio transformer to match the impedance between the receiver audio power amp and the helmet speakers. The adapter box also held the additional microphone impedance matching circuits. I lost track of the number of hours I put in working nights while still trying to service the other customers. Let's just say that I did NOT get paid for all the hours I put in. Let's just say that the installation bill was a LOT more than the customer anticipated and he went ballistic, but he had to have radio system working by a certain date and I met that deadline.

No one owes any company anything. Not even a two week notice, that's just a convenience provided by the employee. Even in a right to work state. You don't like it, just leave, f**k em, dip out. You're not required to do any work for anyone, just leave. They lose money, then they should have hired more people to handle your position. It's the employees problem and no one else's.

You were getting F'd without lube and they must have thought you were a fool until you left. Many years ago, I was working for a large silk screen company in a very small town as a stencil cutter. One day they bought out a nearby litho printing company lock stock and employees and moved them into our block long three-story building. They had everything they needed except a litho stripper, so they offered me the job if I could manage to learn how to do the job. It was an easy transition for me, since I had always kind of drooled over the union wages of a litho stripper and had done a lot of research into the requirements which went into that job. A few years later, and I approached management with the suggestion that since they were paying the pressmen union scale wages (with no Union there), and I was still making silk screen wages and doing a skilled litho job, that maybe they could start upgrading my pay a little each year to get me withing reach of a litho strippers wages. They flat out refused and I quit. Hope they found a way to get the presses rolling again!

Management, Board or Owners can be f*cking idiots. You will see a business on the way to rot when management people are good talkers, minders, drivers and planners but terrible at execution and actual delivery. Pretty much a company overrun by car salesmen/marketers and beancounters. These type of people only see the $$$ in the short term sense who only see the end product but not what goes into it and what it takes. It's a guaranteed disaster and you better start planning to abandonship. No one is indispensable may be true to some extent but the amount of pain when someone leaves varies greatly. In some cases, that pain is deadly or agonising and in some cases a minor annoyance. It boils down to the value you provide. If you're not adding any value but getting hefty pay, you're really a leech or parasite that should be eliminated asap, if the company is sensible. This is also why competition is important, because you tend to see this disease in government agencies and monopolies.

The more a society is dependent on slavery, the more they will try to pin the slaves down. The more underpaid you are, the more the company will try to pin you down. Don't ever stay in a company if you are underpaid. The longer you stay, the more they will work against you getting fair wages or promotions. They might even make up lies about you to sabotage your career-opportunities elsewhere.

Right to work states are also right to not work: the employer and the employee can terminate the relationship at any time, immediately. I have always given termination notices as immediate - watch my backside kids! That may seem harsh, but when they do it to the employee it's considered their right. Well I've seen tooo many good employees trashed out immediately to accept that the right doesn't go both ways. The traditional 2 weeks notice was to smooth referencing from the employer so when that goes out the window why bother?

Decades ago, I semi-retired at repaints (home & business) for cash with this Greek boss. $8 hr back then was ok to good. 2 years later he realized my quality & ability to handle customers he said 'This spring I'll give you $12 hr.', he told this other helper he didn’t want to lose me. I patiently waited and mentioned about it a few times all the while he said business was slow. NOT! Also he stuck this Toyota 4x4 under my nose, said he just bought it for his son, $2,400… SAME amount he owed me if I got that raise. (GRRrrr) So this job came up, exterior repaint a top of the business lawyers house, contract stated must be done by end of Aug.. Still no pay increase, boss put off that job to the last week of Aug. so I stopped answering my pager, it was CONSTANTLY going off with 3 different phone numbers. Next spring I hear he went bankrupt few months after that broken contract. So for 3 years ___ (1 of 2)

I once held my own paychecks for seventeen weeks to provide cash flow to pay a key supplier. I derive no satisfaction from knowing that after they terminated me, the business failed.

They would tell you what you wanted to hear to shut you up. Most French based companies don't pull this kind of c**p because of the Labor Laws they are required to adhere to in France. Personally, if I'd been you, I would have done some research and contact their personnel department in France directly to see if they'd even had contact with your bosses. I would think and IT guy would be able to find a number to call.

I worked at the same place for 15 years and they screwed me over like this. I was a factory floor worker but got 'borrowed by Planning' for a year because I was good with computers. I worked my a**e off learning the job and even dug my car out of the snow when I knew the rest of the team would be stuck in another country because of a meeting. In the end two positions came up and I applied. I was only told I didn't get the job after they announced who did and I emailed HR to ask. They then expected me to stay whilst the two who got the job settled in. I said I'd go back to the factory floor instead. They told me to sleep on it. The next morning they asked again and I told them the same thing. The depressing thing is I was asked to help out in the office a few more times. I was told that people would get laid off if I didn't. I remembered my friend crying because she was going to be laid off at Christmas so I had no choice. I did it but they still kept asking every few months....

Jesus Christ, every point this guy brought up made me wish harder and harder that Americans would take the time to research their rights as a worker. He’s right, there aren’t many, but that’s all the more reason to know what they are. This guy STILL doesn’t understand the terms he’s using… “right to work” isn’t that you can be fired at any time, for any reason- or for no reason. That’s “at will,” AND if you get fired for no reason, you are entitled to collect unemployment. There’s a saying in the legal community- don’t take legal advice from your opponent; likewise, don’t believe your employer when they tell you what your rights are, or are not. The most common thing I see is when an employer prohibits discussing your pay rate with coworkers. They usually even put something in the Employee Handbook to the effect that doing so is a violation of company policy and you will be fired for doing so. I read about people who believe that since they signed that Handbook… to be continued…

Sorry, got close to the character limit …they are bound by that. Nope. The Federal Labor Board states that a non-management employee CAN NOT be fired for discussing wages with coworkers, and your signature isn’t worth the paper it was signed on. A signed contract is void if any of the elements break the law; an illegal contract can’t be enforced. Anyway, I hope the supervisor gets fired for this. I totally get it- sick of Covid restrictions, new gf, tropical paradise, non-refundable reservations. But being away and out-of-touch in those conditions is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Last- getting written up for being a disgruntled employee and quitting DURING his last two weeks is the level of pettiness I aspire to. Except I use my pettiness for the good…

My first "real" job was like this. NGL it took a toll on my health that took a while to recover from even in my 20s. I did learn a lot on this job and got promoted, with a tiny increment and more responsibilities, across 3 countries. After a few months I put in my notice. They then hired an entire team of 4 from China to do what I did. I guess the regulatory requirements of each country and the language barrier finally did them in. Last I saw, they were hiring a "consultant" for those exact 3 countries for triple of what I asked for.

I always asked how much notice they give when they fire someone - 0 notice and sometimes firing or layoff is not due to performance so if they don’t have to give notice, why should we? never underestimate how stupid your management can be, despite being successful people. I'm the only designer left in my team that took on works of my colleagues who have quit the job at almost the same time. I'm supposed to be UI and now I do Art direction, and 2D, and animation, and UX. Yet after a 3-4 months negotiation, they raised my salary almost to nothing. About to quit and I know how much crap they'll be in when I quit, but can't keep caring for people who don't care. If not because Im in a foreign country and I need plan B before quitting, i'd just go a long time ago.

As the daughter to a network engineer and an ex-wife to an IT Manager at a 4 store company, I feel this in my very soul… I had to constantly assist, sometimes 2,3 in the morning, whenever s**t went down you had to be there and did I get paid? Hahahahaha no.

I loved the last comment before the edited part at the end. Yes, he should have answered the phone by asking for some stupid amount of money to go in and fix the problem, cash up front - and then signed a contract for a huge amount until they could find a replacement silly enough to work for that pittance they gave you. You'd probably be working there for another 5 years for big bucks!

The "system" is a FRAUD for rewarding the lazy & greedy, while exploiting & impoverishing the needy. So that's why the middle class is disappearing and the spending value of a dollar has depreciated over 60% in the last 3 decades and over 50% of working people can't afford $500 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. Uncle Sam Goddamn...'Exploited and tortured a workforce and never healed the wounds or shook the curse off.' Genesis 15:12-15

This guy obviously doesn't know how to negotiate a decent salary and has no clue what IT jobs pay. If he's dumb enough to work 16 hour days for 30k...(that's less than min wage).....he must have a screw loose somewhere...I've worked in IT for 50 years and have never met anyone making $30k a year.

You know it's funny, I had a similar situation when I worked at a bakery at Publix. They kept making promises that they would promote me and kept dangling that carrot eventually when I found out that the company had raised the minimum wage of starting employees to 11.00$ an hour (which was the amount that I earned over 5 years of working there.) I quit the company on one of their busiest weeks in Christmas and the company couldn't find a replacement so they had to pull some girl with no bakery experience and no closing experience. It was an absolute disaster, and it could have been avoided by just paying me a decent wage and not playing games with me with promotions and promises. Publix deserved what it got and to this day I still shop at Publix just so they can see my trucker hat and know that my weekly earnings are double what their general manager makes in salary.

Wow, throwing out the rants of an entry level grunt as fact. In IT you get paid what you can do ( unless in unionville where skills don't matter). If he was worth more he had left to get more sooner. But it's ok, don't let a little thing like facts get in way of your agenda I know it sells now days and requires less work for you.

Leaving 1 IT person in charge of a multi million dollar business is very odd. Either this system was stable enough but had to be monitored 16 hours a day to control traffic or just another example of a company putting the wrong people in the right position while letting the true assets leave the company in handcuffs.

When I got out of college I landed my dream job as a pioneer of the virtual reality industry, and I got to move to Chicago, and I'd always wanted to go to a big city. My first boss was wonderful, almost a third mom. (After my birth and step). However, she felt any time not working was a waste, and took advantage of my willingness to go above and beyond at start to the extreme. I ended up working for four companies- hers, a company she sold us to, and two others. I had to work 10-24/7/365 for eight straight years. No OT pay, no bonuses, andy salary only ever got as high as $70k for a year. One company didn't even pay me $7800 in owed wages, and three lawyers from various states said even with their admission I'd lose in court due to lack of worker rights. That ruined my credit, even to this day. Because of my work schedule I couldn't date, and never got to have a wife or kids, I'm still alone at 50. I never got to go out and do things and meet people, so I have no friends.

My last job was such a feel-good to nightmare event that it permanently damaged me, melding with my anxiety disorder I'd been fighting since 1991. I lost that job through sabotage in 2002, and have never been able to work since. The list of requirementa I have in a work environment are impossible to meet in this society. Some people don't grasp how hard some of these things are on some of us, and there's no cure. One tiny example- starting a new job? That's so hard on my mind that I would never feel comfortable for the first year minimum. I won't remember everyone's names for about eight months. Starting a new job is nightmare fuel. Naked in school with critique by every student type of nightmare. Regardless, this world needs to reign in the workaholic attitude. It's not productive or safe to work more than four eight hour days a week.

I've worked over a decade in IT, starting from junior spots to senior spots in global conglomerates. This individual has accurately described many of the situations found even in the companies that are considered high tiered workplaces. I find the comments, by those saying that the story cannot be true, perplexing. They sound more like the comments of shark lawyers trying to trick this individual into revealing more about himself, than commentators who lacking reading skills and/or are too naive to understand the inner workings of many of the American workplaces and IT units.

A lot of holes in that story. Seems a billion dollar company would have some sort of safeguard in place to prevent 218,000 loss. Like an entire dept. At least the company I worked for did. And when salaried overtime is a deciding factor before you agree to become such, so is holiday, sick, family and so on. I'll believe your dept lost 280 a minute before I'll believe even 218,000 an hour. But happy to hear you moved on and ate now at a place where you are valued.

This is a silly story about a guy who initially defended the low pay by saying there were no other IT jobs in that tiny town. How about in the town he lived in that was two hours away? And companies that can't find local applicants must pay the prevailing wage in the labor market they recruit from, i.e., a NATIONAL labor market. This guy was incredibly naive and his "tragic" experience was his own fault.

Im an ex Union organiser - the IT guy story has raised some real red flags with me.. I have rough idea what the going rate for an IT worker is anywhere in the developed world and more importantly so do ALL the workers. In nearly all situations the rates are always contractual and extremely large depending wether you are an analyst etc. For instance two analysts (married) I know from NZ got a contract in the US at a start rate of $150,000 per 6 months way back 20 years ago. Its gone up considerably since.Their sizeable disposable income is used to buy property in NZ. So there is a very good reason why the 'IT guy' was on a mere 39K. I noted the existing IT guy was on the sort of going rate that's paid for the kinda office roustabout IT hardware fixer type. The other tell-tale sign was both jobs were salaried. I believe our IT guy was a newbie and got the job as the main mans Gofer and once he picked up the job he would get a raise. Im also concerned about the timing of the meltdown.

Unfortunately, millennials have a stigma. The story does not include any of the person's behaviors at work or how they performed. All of them want to say that they work just as hard as everyone else. If you are not producing for the team and you are not stand out of the team, you are just a contributor. I am Generation X. Everything that I am getting paid for oh, I have worked for. Unfortunately in this day and age, as long as you show up and the company is making profit, you think you have a right. That is not the case. I have a 22 year old son who is Holding Out for a supervisor job. Good luck with that

I have an IT background, working 16 hrs a day is not that unusual, especially if a project's deadline is coming up. If in a production support position being on call 24/7 is common at no additional pay. Odd hrs, working the weekend is the norm. IT positions are usually salary not by the hour, this is considered part of the job. Some companies pay a bonus, some don't. Due to the working environment is one reason why the salaries are higher than average office workers. As for this guy, some of this doesn't make sense. Unless he was right out of school, even then I don't understand why the contract amt was so cheap. He should of gotten in writing the agreement & why didn't he have a contract rep he was working with. That is the norm

As for anyone being indispensable, I have never seen it at least in a large corp happen. Might be painful for 1 -2 mths but not what he described. Basically, it was the company's mis-management of their IT department. Two guys for a international company. The new boss should of fired for incompetency, he had no idea on managing an IT org but it seems the previous boss didn't either. Part of being a good manager is communicating to upper management how important your area of responsibility is the company's business. I am amazed this company was making 4B a yr, didn't comprehend growth or future expectations.

Also why would you work 100h weeks, while losing all key moments of your family, for a meager pay, with almost no vacation/holidays, when you even knew how much your colleague earned on basically the same position. Then continuing this. And for whatever miracle reason not even get burn out. Just doesn’t add up to me.

How did he know his coworker's salary? Why would they not have immediately hired someone when this guy was leaving? Why would "the only other IT guy" at this multinational super company not also be on call while his subordinate was working out his last week? Story is bunk. 1.) No 4 billion dollar international company has 1 IT guy. Especially if a server crashing costs them 218 grand a minute. 2.). No 4 billion dollar profit per anum company has only one server that can crash an entire terminal. 3.). Right to work state has nothing to do with Unions 4.). Labor law does not allow 7 days a week 16 hour days including federal holidays without additional compensation. Either exempt.or non exempt salary. My guess is he worked for some small satellite office subsidiary of a multi national company. And he crashed the system.himself costing the company about 300 dollars.

Sounds like a load of crap story to sell ad space to me. A key point to this identification is that a "Right to work" state does not mean in any way that you can be fired on the spot. It means you have the right to work and not be forced to pay a union dues. When you are an "at will employee" you understand you can be terminated at any time for any thing. The supposed author who is suppose to be this expert worth $90,000 a year in his own mind does not know this? The guy sounds like a weasel know it all who exaggerated his story and embellished his value greatly.. Likely, the company was instead a victim of his sabotage conveniently staged to happen the day he quit.

I agree that this story is very much fake as almost all of these article type stories are fake. These are done with creativity and for attention. If publishers see that a writter gets plenty of attention it could land them a job or at least a interview. I live in a right to work state and will say honestly these companies will do this kind of stuff to you. There are zero laws that hold a employer accountable to verbal agreements or promises. What you do when they approach you with offers is tell them I want it all in writing with a signed contract by someone who has the athuority to do so. If they try to say or do anything from that point forward that is not signing a written contract you kindly tell them to please stop talking to you or asking you to do things extra. Most likely they will just fire you because you are not ignorant and they know if they slip up one time and break some sort of law you could take them to court. Got promised bonuses before and learned this the hard way.

DUH!

(2 of 2) So for 3 years I see this X-boss running around in rusty old trucks (his WAS always new & clean) and never a smile. I read in the papers he got into a fight INSIDE a restaurant, tables overturned etc.. A few of his long time customers were calling me for work. I never advertised, just ‘word-of-mouth’ which went on for 20 years in 3 towns in 2 different States. Payback’s a ‘B’, huh.

ANY company that does not value their good IT people are idiots. I've worked in private and public sectors and I've seen brilliant and awful IT. But this guy should have been moved into the 90K slot as soon as his coworker moved up. This co. got what deserved. Side note: I live in a "right to work state" and I call it "right to fire." However, I also belong to a union. They do exist in right to work states.

No one should give a company that much of themselves as the average company feels you are nothing but a commodity. Years ago I worked my way up to be the service manager in a family-owned company, but they would not give me a raise, because I was not family. After the president, VP and store manager all left to go to a 2-week trade show out-of-state, I put in my 2 weeks notice (I had already found another job). I wasn't there when they returned, too bad for them.

I worked more than 3,000 hours a year, on call seven days a week, without any vacation time, for ten years — and in that time got only four pay increases. I once held my own paychecks for seventeen weeks to provide cash flow to pay a key supplier. I derive no satisfaction from knowing that after they terminated me, the business failed.

I stopped when I read the main corporate office was in France. These A-holes were shining you on. They weren't in contact with corporate.

I never gave notice when I quit. I always asked how much notice they give when they fire someone - 0 notice and sometimes firing or layoff is not due to performance so if they don’t have to give notice, why should we? He did the right thing but they’re probably too stupid to learn their lesson.

never underestimate how stupid your management can be, despite being successful people.

If this was actually real, the company should sue this fool because he freely admits that under his watch the infrastructure was garbage, that is on him and why he was probably let go

Yes, he was naive, but it's more importantly a fault in the system. No employer should be able to do that. That's why we have unions.

This one was a little odd. First, this guy just seems like a doormat, I don’t understand even despite his explanation why he stuck around for so long. I guess a lot of people feel trapped in their jobs? But also #2, the previous friend turned manager that used to make 90k…doesn’t seem like much of a friend.

Funny how this is written and weird. Like their primary server costs 10k? And they handle billions a year? My employer only goes in the ten millions, but our 1 site main server costs 250.000,-. Also why would you work 100h weeks, while losing all key moments of your family, for a meager pay, with almost no vacation/holidays, when you even knew how much your colleague earned on basically the same position. Then continuing this. And for whatever miracle reason not even get burn out. Just doesn’t add up to me.

I'll take "Things that never happened" for $31,000, Alex. There is absolutely no way that this worldwide conglomerate based in Smalltown USA only has one super IT guy based in Timbucktoo. How did he know his coworker's salary? Why would they not have immediately hired someone when this guy was leaving? Why would "the only other IT guy" at this multinational super company not also be on call while his subordinate was working out his last week? Why would he ever be permitted to travel without having a new hire ready?. So much unbelievability here. But nice fan fiction!

Thats a perfect example WHY companies set up factories in Southern US states ..an how they RAPE there employees compared to same jobs in northern states! I work in uppermidwest an make an excellent salary in a manufacturing setup. I would never in a million yrs expect to get anywhere near my earning dwn south. I prefer the 4 seasons an northern states anyhow thankfully. I feel bad for that guy tho..overworked & underappreciated . Move north my friend an make some real $ in IT. Or try consulting as an independent contractor. Sounds like not much opportunity in that are tho.

Nothing about this article ud believable. Tolerating a full year working 16 hours daily, 112 hours a week is complete nonsense. Not recognizing your leverage makes you the fool of this story. The company losing 200k per minute is absolute BS.

I'm sorry but I had to stop reading after the first couple of lines. The part where it says to ask your colleagues what they are getting paid. In most organizations that is a big NO NO. You do not openly discuss wages with your peers. That is the fastest way to get called in to speak with HR which likely won't be pleasant
