Writer Matt Walsh has been very open about his stance on illegal immigration. Some people, however, have just started pointing fingers at one of his recent tweets, saying that Walsh’s a hypocrite when it comes to crossing borders. The heated discussion began when Walsh expressed his opinion about the way governments should treat isolated tribes. (Facebook cover image: Unknown)

The question of whether or not it’s just for modern societies to bring civilization to these groups isn’t new, and it’s still quite relevant. According to Survival International, currently there are more than one hundred uncontacted tribes around the world. And while the charitable trust believes that “industrialized societies subject tribal peoples to genocidal violence, slavery and racism so they can steal their lands, resources and labour in the name of ‘progress’ and ‘civilization,'” Walsh has expressed a different opinion.

Agreed. My wife and I are Catholic, all sacraments, married in the church and sending our daughter to CCE. We dislike people that try to preach "the word". Listen, it's 2018, everyone already knows "the word". If they want to hear it they'll come to church on their own accord. They don't need a bunch of self righteous high and mighty stuck up a$$holes telling them they're living in sin and need to make better choices. Those people make all of us look bad. Those are the same people that want everyone to feel "welcomed" at church but vote to keep the boarders closed and live by white flight and red lining.

Matt Walsh is a clueless, inconsidered cultural imperialist who has no idea about different societies and their perceptions of themselves. When I was doing my PhD fieldwork I had the pleasure to work with international Earthwatch volunteers. One of my best was a quietly-spoken indigenous Indonesian rainforest village chief, whose people only wanted to live undisturbed in their forest home without the trappings or interference of technological society. The village faced a huge philosophical dilemma in gathering the resources to send their chief overseas, but they were desperate to understand how Western science might help them protect their forest and homes. Although I loved my own project and the ecology behind it, if I made a difference to this man's ability to protect his people this will by far be the best legacy that I could ever hope for from my scientific work.
