15 Headlines Show How Differently The British Press Treat Meghan Markle Vs Kate Middleton
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shocked the public when they announced on January 8 that they were leaving their position as senior members of the royal family. One of the most notable changes they're making is to deny a group of British press outlets first access to their personal press releases after years of press coverage and editing decisions that they feel have been unfair, filled with favoritism, and aimed to turn public opinion against Meghan in particular.
Since the announcement, journalists unearthed some of the British media’s most snide and judgmental headlines about Meghan and put them next to what the same outlets—sometimes even the same authors—thought of similar situations when fellow Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton was involved. Here are some of the things that British journalists only seemed to think were wrong once the former British royal family member Meghan did them. (h/t buzzfeed)

At the same time, he released a scathing statement comparing the press’ treatment of her to that of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car accident while trying to escape from meddling photographers after years of being tormented by invasive journalists.
This year, it looks like the couple decided that strongly worded letters weren’t making a difference and they’re now setting off to teach the British press a lesson by cutting ties officially.

You seem to be forgetting all the hate Kate went through in the early days of her relationship with William; when her clothes were criticised, she and her family were dragged through the mud with the press digging for any dirt. She had the French press take long lens photos of her topless and try to sell them all over the world. She has now been with William 18 years, as they got together at uni... and the press have got over their issues with her as she has proved herself hard working and unshakable (in public that is) All wives and girlfriends of major royals have Ben through press hatred... Diana, Sarah, Sophie, Kate, (and Autumn to some extent) and now Meghan. I'm. It saying it's right, it's totally unacceptable; but it happens!

Another thing I noticed in those headlines - Meghan is rarely called by her title Duchess of Sussex. Though Kate is also a commoner, she is called Duchess of Cambridge way more.

So, first off, I do think the negative comparisons are stupid and hurtful and shouldn't be a thing. But I note that all of the Meghan-slamming rags are TABLOIDS, not legit journalism, and they go for sensationalism and spectacle. They don't even pretend to be unbiased. I'm not the least bit surprised they have a favorite (although it's horrible and petty). Meghan has been treated poorly for sure. But Kate faced a lot of scrutiny and harshness in her early-relationship years with William. It's unfair how ALL of them are bullied by the tabloids (Princess Margaret, anyone?).

This isn’t totally representative of the coverage of Kate. Before they married, the tabloids went to town on her student days, and family and when she suffered bad morning sickness they treated her as a malingerer. The tabloids are intrusive and vile to all women. Particularly famous and royal ones.

Queen Elizabeth did a courageous job in the war and really is an amazing person. BUT! I think monarchy is wrong and it's time we got rid of it.

Now, the press is not being nice anymore to Meghan (they really were in the beginning though! The wedding and the romance and it was all quite positively described - don't know what changed that.. a bit too often missing protocol?) - but these so called side by side comparisons are of such different events in all but one case that this is as damaging as the press is.

I am sure there is a great deal of racism on social media, but the driver behind the tabloid coverage is salaciousness not racism. She’s young, beautiful and female and the public can’t get enough of that. The royal boyfriends and husbands dont have the press examining their clothes, bodies, expenditure, families, every utterance etc. There was even an article in the Daily Mail about her toes! This is very much an obsession with women. And the narrative they are pushing is the ancient misogynist one of her being the wicked queen.

I'm American, but I've got so many ties across the pond and that's where my heart really is. That being said, most of my English friends have said that, "Mother and Father aren't getting along" - meaning Britain doesn't see us in the kindest light right now. I've actually seen a lot of Americans, "Yanks", get harassed and it isn't the friendly ribbing we used to get. Mind you, this is younger people (20's to late 30's), so perhaps it isn't this way for the older generations. The thing is that to them we're the stereotype of "'Murica". We ruin stuff. And now Murica is taking over the Royal Family. So sadly, yes, a lot of it is that Meghan is American, so you can't blame her for wanting to leave a place where she hasn't been too welcomed.

I know zero about the royal family. This does indeed look slanted but before I cast judgement I'd like to see if anyone could find the vice versa of this article's examples. If there are none to be found, then it is what it is I guess. I wonder though, did Harry's romance start just after clickbait became all the rage? Maybe Kate came around before those times so the precedent of how she was to be treated was already set.

Anyone who knows most of these particular media outlets will testify to the fact that they represent the right wing of the British press. The Mail & The Express are written for the elderly, right wingnuts who love to hate anyone who’s not like them, white and middle class. This does highlight how evil they are but don’t think for a minute they represent the wider British public. Can’t fault them for stepping away from the spotlight, Harry saw the damage that the press did to his Mum, he will be more than happy for his family to get away from that same pressure. I don’t agree with the way they’ve done it but I suspect they knew that doing it by following protocol would allow the Queen the exert a huge amount of pressure on them. Good luck to them, wherever life takes them.

Honestly, I don't think I'd care what anyone wrote about me if I suddenly became part of the royal family. Could life be easier? Just smile and have some chitchat at lame events and not having to worry about paying the rent or your kids education, ever. I believe that there is a difference in how they arrange things. For example did they ask the queen for permission to do something or did they simply inform her what they were doing? It was their first Christmas as a family, why the didn't send it with the Queen? How is it the same as spending 2 Christmases with your parents in a decade? Your are baptising you kid so you simply tell the queen the date with out her input, or do you ask if she can come and she said "I'm 92 and there is a hard week ahead can i skip this?" I don't get how are those things the same

I now see why Meghan and Harry want to leave. I had No idea how much they rip the poor woman apart. I now understand their decision to relocate, its utterly shocking/devastating. Diana was treated similarly and look how that turned out. The press over there is full of Racist, elitist a******s. I hope Meghan and Harry find some peace and are able to recover from this abuse. Just because someone is famous does not make them immune to being hurt. They are real people with real feelings. I’m from Canada so I had not seen many of these articles before. The good thing for M&H is That in Canada, we just don’t really care about them... that sounds mean, but it’s not intended to. We could care less about what they are wearing or doing, or what rules /traditions they are violating. AKA we are not royalty obsessed. Up until 1917 they were the Saxe-Coburg and Gothas but after being at war with Germany for 3 years and losing about 1,000,000 men, they decided it would be more popular to take the name of their English home. There have only been 4 Windsor monarchs including the present Queen's uncle who openly supported the Nazis before WW2.

These comparisons help explain what has contributed towards the decision taken by the Sussexes to withdraw from 'active duty' and seek a less public life away from the tabloid media. Even by ignoring the gutter press, it's still a toxic element that still pervades their lives. Seeing these comparisons has altered my view of their decision. Unfortunately, they're still likely to be in the public eye wherever they are.

But she was lauded by the press in the beginning. And her and Harry haven’t always helped themselves with some questionable decisions. The British tabloid press cam definitely be vile (and were to Kate initially too). But I am not convinced they were being racist? I have never seen any evidence to support this unless I really am missing something

The press can be vicious against Meghan but she is not the first nor will she be the last Royal they verbally attack. Before they turned on Meghan, they portrayed Kate as a lazy good digger social climber and before her, they tore Camilla Parker Bowles to shreds (then there is how they treated Princess Diana until she died). If Meghan's friends and hanger ons would stop running to the press at every opportunity to portray her as a victim (which does her no favors especially since she gets accused of being behind it) and her and Harry would follow the Queen Mother's slogan never complain, never explain, the press would most likely move on to a new target. If Kate had friends and hanger ons who wouldn't stfu up about her and constantly villainize the British press and William whined about how the evil press are violating his and his wife's privacy while his wife does pap walks with a big grin on her face, Kate no doubt would be reciving the same treatment.

I think it's time to do away with the worst of the press. All public figures can expect a bit of hassle but it's ridiculous to allow said press to harass and denigrate anyone to that extent. The problem, however, is that those particular types of "newspapers" wouldn't be rabidly spouting such despicable content IF PEOPLE WOULD STOP F*****G BUYING THOSE PAPERS. No sales? No site hits? Less b******t.

This is why I'd never want to be super famous, not for all the riches or privileges. Every little sign of weakness (everyone has weaknesses, just some are better at hiding it or it's not the obvious kind) is picked apart and made the basis of drastic assumptions about your character. Even things that are not weaknesses can be perceived that way if they want to make that leap for a "story". No privacy, so many tight rules for public appearance and personal choices that like this list shows, can be biased against or for you at a whim. Give the poor people a break. Maybe Meghan is a controlling diva who selfishly eschews centuries of tradition or maybe she's just a woman who's trying hard to adjust to the royal life and culture she wasn't raised in and the press is horrible and damaging. The point is, as much as we like to speculate and put these people on pedestals or stomp all over them for being human, we don't really know them deeply enough to make a final judgement.

Nevermind he put 100 Billion for black communities, or created task force to investigate murders of our Native Americans, or stands up for LGBTQ in front of the UN for allowing countries to make them illegal and punishable by death in some countries, or has had more child trafficking rings busted than any other president, or has more jobs for more people under every single demographic in our history, or made it a felony to abuse animals, etc, etc, etc.. I can see why Harry wants far away from the toxic royals. No offense, but they need to get the sticks out of their "bums". I think the notion of royalty is a bit outdated but thats just my opinion. Theres a long history of unhappy relationships because of people not marrying who they want. But Kate's the Duchess and British to boot. Where as Meghan is an actress and a stinky ol' American. It's obvious that the British tabloids do not approve of Meghan. They need to get over it. I can't imagine why her and Harry want to step away from representing the royal family (*sarcasm). Perhaps if the Queen had shown her a modicum of approval or if she'd gotten some sort of reign on the tabloids to leave Meghan alone, they wouldn't be leaving. I love the Queen, but it's proof you can't take the snobbery out of royalty. It's too bad. Meghan and Harry are both wonderful people that deserve more than they are getting.

Harry's decision to leave the Royal life has been on the cards since he was a teenager. He has publicly, repeatedly, & on the record, stated that he did NOT want to be king. He & his brother have also publicly, & on the record, stated that they made an agreement, a long time before either of them met their current wives, that they would willingly leave the Royal family / money / duties, in order to have as 'normal' a life as they could possibly have - it's one of the primary reasons why they have *both* broken / changed so many traditions, including marrying 'commoners'. Harry has said repeatedly, formally, that he would do whatever it took, to protect his family, as he was unable to protect his mother when he was young. This blatant double-standard shown towards Meghan, & the outright bigoted comments thrown at her by the media (solely for the purpose of profit), is more than enough of a reason for him to do exactly what he has ALWAYS been willing to do. I wish them only good.

You seem to be forgetting all the hate Kate went through in the early days of her relationship with William; when her clothes were criticised, she and her family were dragged through the mud with the press digging for any dirt. She had the French press take long lens photos of her topless and try to sell them all over the world. She has now been with William 18 years, as they got together at uni... and the press have got over their issues with her as she has proved herself hard working and unshakable (in public that is) All wives and girlfriends of major royals have Ben through press hatred... Diana, Sarah, Sophie, Kate, (and Autumn to some extent) and now Meghan. I'm. It saying it's right, it's totally unacceptable; but it happens!

So, first off, I do think the negative comparisons are stupid and hurtful and shouldn't be a thing. But I note that all of the Meghan-slamming rags are TABLOIDS, not legit journalism, and they go for sensationalism and spectacle. They don't even pretend to be unbiased. I'm not the least bit surprised they have a favorite (although it's horrible and petty). Meghan has been treated poorly for sure. But Kate faced a lot of scrutiny and harshness in her early-relationship years with William. It's unfair how ALL of them are bullied by the tabloids (Princess Margaret, anyone?).

This isn’t totally representative of the coverage of Kate. Before they married, the tabloids went to town on her student days, and family and when she suffered bad morning sickness they treated her as a malingerer. Now, the press is not being nice anymore to Meghan (they really were in the beginning though! The wedding and the romance and it was all quite positively described - don't know what changed that.. a bit too often missing protocol?) - but these so called side by side comparisons are of such different events in all but one case that this is as damaging as the press is.

I am sure there is a great deal of racism on social media, but the driver behind the tabloid coverage is salaciousness not racism. She’s young, beautiful and female and the public can’t get enough of that. The royal boyfriends and husbands dont have the press examining their clothes, bodies, expenditure, families, every utterance etc. There was even an article in the Daily Mail about her toes! This is very much an obsession with women. And the narrative they are pushing is the ancient misogynist one of her being the wicked queen.

I'm American, but I've got so many ties across the pond and that's where my heart really is. That being said, most of my English friends have said that, "Mother and Father aren't getting along" - meaning Britain doesn't see us in the kindest light right now. I've actually seen a lot of Americans, "Yanks", get harassed and it isn't the friendly ribbing we used to get. Mind you, this is younger people (20's to late 30's), so perhaps it isn't this way for the older generations. The thing is that to them we're the stereotype of "'Murica". We ruin stuff. And now Murica is taking over the Royal Family. So sadly, yes, a lot of it is that Meghan is American, so you can't blame her for wanting to leave a place where she hasn't been too welcomed.

I know zero about the royal family. This does indeed look slanted but before I cast judgement I'd like to see if anyone could find the vice versa of this article's examples. If there are none to be found, then it is what it is I guess. I wonder though, did Harry's romance start just after clickbait became all the rage? Maybe Kate came around before those times so the precedent of how she was to be treated was already set.

Anyone who knows most of these particular media outlets will testify to the fact that they represent the right wing of the British press. The Mail & The Express are written for the elderly, right wingnuts who love to hate anyone who’s not like them, white and middle class. This does highlight how evil they are but don’t think for a minute they represent the wider British public. Can’t fault them for stepping away from the spotlight, Harry saw the damage that the press did to his Mum, he will be more than happy for his family to get away from that same pressure. I don’t agree with the way they’ve done it but I suspect they knew that doing it by following protocol would allow the Queen the exert a huge amount of pressure on them. Good luck to them, wherever life takes them.

Honestly, I don't think I'd care what anyone wrote about me if I suddenly became part of the royal family. Could life be easier? Just smile and have some chitchat at lame events and not having to worry about paying the rent or your kids education, ever. I believe that there is a difference in how they arrange things. For example did they ask the queen for permission to do something or did they simply inform her what they were doing? It was their first Christmas as a family, why the didn't send it with the Queen? How is it the same as spending 2 Christmases with your parents in a decade? Your are baptising you kid so you simply tell the queen the date with out her input, or do you ask if she can come and she said "I'm 92 and there is a hard week ahead can i skip this?" I don't get how are those things the same

I now see why Meghan and Harry want to leave. I had No idea how much they rip the poor woman apart. I now understand their decision to relocate, its utterly shocking/devastating. Diana was treated similarly and look how that turned out. The press over there is full of Racist, elitist a******s. I hope Meghan and Harry find some peace and are able to recover from this abuse. Just because someone is famous does not make them immune to being hurt. They are real people with real feelings. I’m from Canada so I had not seen many of these articles before. The good thing for M&H is That in Canada, we just don’t really care about them... that sounds mean, but it’s not intended to. We could care less about what they are wearing or doing, or what rules /traditions they are violating. AKA we are not royalty obsessed. Up until 1917 they were the Saxe-Coburg and Gothas but after being at war with Germany for 3 years and losing about 1,000,000 men, they decided it would be more popular to take the name of their English home. There have only been 4 Windsor monarchs including the present Queen's uncle who openly supported the Nazis before WW2.

These comparisons help explain what has contributed towards the decision taken by the Sussexes to withdraw from 'active duty' and seek a less public life away from the tabloid media. Even by ignoring the gutter press, it's still a toxic element that still pervades their lives. Seeing these comparisons has altered my view of their decision. Unfortunately, they're still likely to be in the public eye wherever they are.

It’s definitely mean-spirited. And typical of the British media’s penchant for tearing down new Royals with sensationalist, petty and sometimes cruel headlines. But she was lauded by the press in the beginning. And her and Harry haven’t always helped themselves with some questionable decisions. The British tabloid press cam definitely be vile (and were to Kate initially too). But I am not convinced they were being racist? I have never seen any evidence to support this unless I really am missing something

The press can be vicious against Meghan but she is not the first nor will she be the last Royal they verbally attack. Before they turned on Meghan, they portrayed Kate as a lazy good digger social climber and before her, they tore Camilla Parker Bowles to shreds (then there is how they treated Princess Diana until she died). If Meghan's friends and hanger ons would stop running to the press at every opportunity to portray her as a victim (which does her no favors especially since she gets accused of being behind it) and her and Harry would follow the Queen Mother's slogan never complain, never explain, the press would most likely move on to a new target. If Kate had friends and hanger ons who wouldn't stfu up about her and constantly villainize the British press and William whined about how the evil press are violating his and his wife's privacy while his wife does pap walks with a big grin on her face, Kate no doubt would be reciving the same treatment.

I think it's time to do away with the worst of the press. All public figures can expect a bit of hassle but it's ridiculous to allow said press to harass and denigrate anyone to that extent.
