The two friends started working together in 2019 when Maria was Denise’s photographer. After teaming up for several photoshoots, Denise said she suggested taking a photo together wearing the same bikini — she wanted to showcase the same swimsuit on different body types and promote body positivity.
Once posted on social media, it did so well, the duo was over the moon to receive so much positive feedback. It inspired them to create and post even more videos, and their fan count quickly started growing. As of today, Denise has a whopping 1.5M followers on Instagram alone, while Maria amassed more than 492K.
"Once TikTok had become popular, we decided to do a fun video and that’s when it went viral," Denise told Bored Panda in a previous interview. Then they realized they needed to decide on a hashtag and start an actual body-positivity movement. Their Instagram followers voted between #ThroughThickAndThin and #StyleNotSize, and, as you already know, the latter won.
Earlier on, Maria said that at first, they wore a similar style but not the exact same pieces. "I think we really wanted to push the boundaries and go for it! We dressed from head to toe to really showcase one same look on different bodies."
"We loved the public’s response and so I believe now we treat it as a job! A job to educate and open people’s eyes to the endless possibilities in fashion. And so we post more frequently and we cater to every style, so that there’s content to be enjoyed by everyone," she added.
Denise explained that the key message of their videos is "to dress however you please and to love your body." According to her, it’s time "to stop comparing yourself to others" and start building a positive self-image from within. "The fact that we can inspire so many women to feel confident and be themselves makes us want to continue this movement," she added.
Maria also mentioned that they have been busy "working on challenging today’s industry standards! We really want the industry to hear and understand that they must be inclusive. Plus size, petite, tall, standard sizes should be available to the public because we all have bodies and they are all equally important and they should be treated as such."
Well, the style influencers' efforts seem like it's paying off because they feel the body-positive movement is becoming more and more accepted by both modern society and the fashion business. "Lately, it’s been so easy for me to find clothes that fit both Maria and I great," Denise said. "Even sustainable clothing, which is amazing! The industry is progressing and even though there are still some improvements to be made, we are heading in the right direction!"
Brilliant outfits, I think a background OTHER than white might’ve been a better choice, tho. 👍🏻
these colors in this outfit look better on the fair skinned woman
I always believe that lighter colors add a few pounds to a larger frame.. I do love this outfit on both ladies. Really like the shirt.
Okay hear me out, I know they're friends but they'd make a cute couple!
It looks like the pair is making sure that the fashion world will become even more inclusive by taking up a variety of projects. Recently, they partnered up with Abercrombie & Fitch to co-create a collection for fall. "It’s mind-blowing how much more of you you can show when brands aren’t the ones judging and how much society changes when they aren’t being told by the industry what is beauty," Maria told Teen Vogue.
"It’s much more inviting." Denise agreed. "I would’ve never thought that a pair of Abercrombie jeans could look so good on me. Abercrombie has come a long way with today’s fashion."
This partnership helped to catch the eye of Macy’s and led to a loungewear collection. Believing it is really about your style, not your size, Maria told WWD: "We really want the fashion world to be size-inclusive." Plus, the design of the clothes is meant to be equally comfortable and flattering.
They made sure that materials, fabrics, and designs are up-to-date because "the fashion industry tends to do everything very basic for a lot of sizes." Maria added that "every single woman out there is human and we all have different shapes and different sizes. We work really hard to find the perfect pieces to showcase for Style Not Size."
This is the first one where the girl with the kick ass curves hasn't looked better than the other girl.
Very nice on all three. Woman in the center does look most alluring.
The series is here "to empower women and let them feel beautiful and in control, and not to judge or diminish," she said. Encouraging body positivity and showing that two different bodies can proudly wear the same thing, they remind people all over that size does not have to dictate your wardrobe. "We are super proud of Style Not Size, and we love seeing every single Style Not Size video from other women."
It's a good idea, but the majority of plus sized women like me have fat rolls and that would make these clothes look very, very different. These models both have a smooth profile so it still isn't very realistic for most plus sized women.
Right?? Both girls are lovely but my plus sized bust and plus size tummy are not gonna fit in 85% of those outfits 😅 Double D's and size 18 jeans (US sizing) make clothing shopping a nightmare. Thank goodness hottopic has normal plus sizing for dresses.
Load More Replies...Not a fan of any of he outfits. And totally confused as to how you can be plus size and still have a flat stomach - what sorcery is this? If I gain weight first thing that happens in a round stomach
Same. Came here to vent that. Feel doubly body shamed now. First, I'm fat-ish, second, my stomach is not flat. And I lost my waist sometime ago.
Load More Replies...You *think* the clothes are horrible. I loved some of the outfits. The only thing that matters is whether the person who paid for/wears the clothes likes them. Also why does it need to stop? How is it negatively affecting your life when you can just not look?
Load More Replies...They both look great they also both have flat stomachs that helps so much. Had a flat stomach until friggin menopause. Whole body is different
I've started peri-menopause and I agree, body shape is completely different and taking some getting used to! I gained weight then list it but overall shape is completely changed. (Not all bad - I was flat chested for most of my adult life, then suddenly double D cups 🤣)
Load More Replies...I really like the idea of the post, but why do they choose such unflattering, overkill dresses? I feel like it would make more sense to do casual/everyday outfit variations.
All of you that comment after each picture saying which girl looks better on the outfit are missing the point completely. It’s not about what looks better one different body types, and what certain body types look good in, it’s about how clothing can look different, but that doesn’t make any of them less beautiful.
I think people just get happy to see someone that looks like them. That's usually what they feel is beautiful. 🤷🏻♀️
Load More Replies...I'm a big girl, I lost a crap ton of weight from my bariatric surgery. I carried a lot of my weight in my abdomen. Now all that fat hangs down. All is these outfits would look terrible on me because I don't have any sort of flat tummy. It makes all the difference in my opinion. Hopefully I'll get my tummy tuck one day and I can rock these kind of cute and sexy outfits
I really appreciate the effort but now try it with a slim person and a person who has belly fat and a broad waist.
Can everyone just stop commenting left or right they didn't post this so people can vote
I love this but the big girl has a crazy sexy gorgeous figure. Makes me realize that tighter clothes on a bigger person is better than bulky clothes. I'm half way between these 2 body shapes and am rethinking my silhouette.
If you're half way between these 2 then you are slim with curves which is absolutely gorgeous. I hate it when the curvy wear these wide tent-like clothes. What the heck is wrong with curves, hips and as my hubbie used to say "love handles". :D
Load More Replies...Blah. None of these outfits would be worn "in real life" (at least not by me). More Instagram-material. So the whole post got pretty useless. And I think some people lost the point in the comments - it's not about who is more fuckable, it's supposed to be showing that all shapes can look good in the same clothes (they can't.) Dress according to body shape AND personality instead of copy and paste.
I think I speak for all the big girls out there when I say that the curvy girl here has good portions, and while her size is clearly bigger than the other model she still has the classic hourglass shape that women are assumed to have in order to pull off these designs. Let's see someone outside of that mold try this....thats where we'll see the difference.
These outfits were custom fit for each one. Of course they're going to look amazing
Different styles/colors/lengths etc. of clothing are flattering to different body types. And by body type I mean how tall I am, whether I have bigger or no breasts, longer legs etc. That's why I despise 'this year's colors and what's in'. Such comparisons don't make sense at all.
People need to stop voting on which one looks "better" it's literally not the point and goes AGAINST the point
Bunch of women trying to keep themselves single for validation in the comments. Keep it up, ladies!
Body positivity is great but how do you expect to send the message of “don’t compare yourself to others!!” when you are two MODELS. Miss girl How in the world are you plus sized with a flat stomach and no visible rolls??? I WISH I could be like that 😭 and no hip dips either, so lucky!! This reminds me of the challenge that’s like “you’re not ugly just look up” and all the people doing it are picture perfect 😭 come on now
The clothes are great and obviously the girls love fashion. Why don't you haters start working out instead of blaming two beautiful woman for looking good. Unless you got some sort of medical condition you are just haters hating on people who actually have a motor and do s**t.
Both women look beautiful and I love the contrast of the outfits on both body types. They look happy, confident and content with themselves. That's all that matters.
I loved how the outfits looked on both the woman, however I did notice a pattern, one I did not like seeing. The woman in the comments were uplifting and saying how beautiful and gorgeous both woman are, however, and this is the part I didn't like, the men only commented on the tanner woman, for her curves. The two women were showing how differently clothes look on different bodies, and was not at all a competition of the two!
Thank goodness I'm not the only one who was like...wait...her tummy is flat?? She doesn't have stretch marks???? Her boobs aren't down to her knees??? I've had 3 children via c-section and there is NO WAY I'd look good in any of these. I'll stick to my moo-moos thanks!!
Being over weight is not exactly healthy. Speaking for myself I don't prefer plus sized women.
I didn't see anyone ask to date you or ask you for medical advice. Y'all come with some off the wall bs. You could've kept it moving but that would've been too much like right.
Load More Replies...I'm not hating, because anytime a woman that wears a larger size gets to show her beauty, I'm all for it. If you look at the women, however, their body type is actually pretty similar, just one is larger. I never did and never will look anything like either of them, so it doesn't hold my interest. I wish them luck, they both make the clothes they choose look good, and a designer that has an up to size 14 line could use them effectively. Meanwhile, I'm going to look at a couple sites where the models look more like lumpy me lol
I think several people in these comments are just a bit on the jealous side. Both of these women look amazing and I'd love to know where they got the outfits. The whole point of this was to show the difference in the appearance on different body types. Both rocked it on both or one or the other. The curves on one made some stuff look good while the lack of curves on the other made others look good. All the negative comments just don't make any sense to me.
They don't have different body types, though. The larger woman has an amazing figure, with the "classic" hourglass figure that ***most women don't have***. A lot of women despise themselves not because of their size, but because of their shape. What this is saying is, you can be larger and beautiful, but only if you have a flat stomach, a small waist, wide hips, etc. The rest of us know we're garbage, so thanks for that.
Load More Replies...This makes me kinda sad, because people say she's plus size which automatically makes you think that she's fat, but she's not. She's just got wide hips and a chest. I don't know when having a chest and hips started making you fat, but it needs to stop. This proves it.
You are assuming plus-sized = fat, others are saying she's curvy. I was taught that plus size is everything beyond standard sizing.
Load More Replies...The both look great because they are both hourglass shaped. Sadly this is not the case for a lot of us. With me, any extra weight goes to my middle first. Even when I wore a size five I didn't have a waist.
Actually the blonde woman to my eye has more of a straight/ rectangular shape. The third woman in some of the pics looked different as well. I think this post did a great job of what it meant to do: showing that anyone can wear what they want, regardless of size. I say, go for it!! I don’t have that perfectly shaped body, but I still wear the clothes that I want and find attractive. It’s all about the confidence, girl ;)
Load More Replies...Let me guess. They look different. I didn't need 62 pictures to demonstrate that.
The more curvy of the women has a pretty fabulous body. She's able to wear clothes many women cannot due to her small waist. She's quite beautiful.
WOW! You girls are surely very courageous in doing what you are doing! Keep up the good work! From a photographers point of view the angle you girls take the pictures from does hide the plus size stomach and rolls ... also having the clothes bought a wee size bigger of course helps to compliment the plus size. For those wanting to see 'fat rolls' check the black little top with the denim to give you peace of mind - there are fat rolls on the plus size - but then again a clever choice of black to 'hide' the rolls and not make it to obvious. Go Girls Go! You are doing a Brilliant Job!
I think it's not a matter of big size, instead a matter of small waist ans big hips, which isn't found on many big size people
It's also your attitude when you wear the outfit. If you exude confidence no matter what your size people don't notice the size of your thighs as much as the size of your smile.
I never want to hear that "two best friends are never both hot" s**t again! These ladies are beautiful!
I ‘ get ‘ the message in the comparisons. But not all body shapes, whatever size, can come across as looking like modern models. Because of genetics, my waist is the thickest part of my body. Nope. Most of these dresses would not look so good on me.
Not a fan of high slits or lack of color. Also too wide a difference in skin tones. You worked too hard to make the point and ruined it.
I think it's important for everyone to love themselves and not live their life for others. An outfit is just an outfit. If your not interested then scroll on...I think each of us have our own beauty and ability that make us unique. We should be lifting one another up everyday, ladies. Being rude and inconsiderate doesn't show support to everyone.
They basically have the same body shape, just one girl is heavier than the other! So this makes absolutely no sense!
This friendship looks like one big weight loss commercial. Not ONE of those is fitted for the plus size girl. Or even appropriate. Just distasteful imho
Both are vital sexy women in their own way. Weight has nothing to do with it. But I don't like their choices in outfits.
Ok... but put a "lumpy" plus size woman in the photos (like me: I have love handles and a gut) and THEN see which looks better in these clothes.
Majority of all the outfits looked better on the plus size but all of the outfits were terrible. Only outfits that were good for the smaller model were the ones made for less busty individuals
I think that the girl with the curves looked way better in all on them and those outfits are so slutty. How does it show us that many outfits look good on all body types when one or both look so ugly?!!
They're both very beautiful! But, I'm wondering it the curvy friend had a plastic surgery? or some sort or remedies that can make her profile very clean and smooth? I'm on the heavier side myself, with a smaller waist, and wider hips, but I could never look so good like the curvy friend! Just curious is all.
I am surprised at the number of outfits they found to fit both of them, and fit so well. I wonder if there was tailoring involved, because I've never been able to pull a pair of jeans off the rack and had them fit so well. Both the girls look smashing in their clothes, and it made me happy to see the plus size model looking so terrific in the same clothes as the smaller size. Unfortunately, I carry my weight in my boobs and stomach, so I would never look like the lovely curvy girl here, but I can dream!
I want to know where they find clothes that are the same style and are actually cut to fit BOTH body types. Because so often, plus sized clothing just adds more fabric to the cut of a "standard" size piece and it ends up being very unflattering, and items actually designed for plus size bodies are rarely sexy in the way standard size ones are. It's getting better, but the difference in the fir between an XL "standard" and a 1X "plus size" is ridiculous! Not every plus size woman had giant boobs! And not every "standard" size woman has tiny shoulders and thin arms!
Being overweight most of my life, I always felt nothing looked good on me, and when I was skinny for a few years clothes looked good, but I still my boobs and somewhat of a butt, when I'm not skinny I have no butt whatsoever, to the point of it being caved in, lol and my books just make me look so frumpy, just like blob. My hips get squared off, killing the hourglass figure I had when skinny (but not even close to the skinny girl in these photos tho)
You can totally be larger and have a flat stomach. I can guarantee you the curvy girl works out. Working out does not equal losing weight unless you're in a calorie deficit. If she's happy with her size, which she obviously looks like she is, she most likely tones her body but keeps her weight. I think it's beautiful. I think they're beautiful. And while the clothes aren't the best, this series inspired me. Bodies are beautiful. Period.
These are two beautiful woman that shows living life to the fullest doesn't have to be a size thing. I absolutely love it ! Keep going ! Love yourself first!
First I want to say that all women are beautiful. Tall, short, thin, voluptuous, it doesn't matter. I personally like a woman with classy curves. Just something about a woman who has all the right curves that drives me nuts. With that being said, all outfits are designed for a specific body type, and each outfit looks best on those women it was designed for.
Those are not two different shapes, both of them have an hour-glass shape
Both the woman looked amazing in the outfits, regardless of whether or not I liked the outfit myself, but looking at the comments on each picture, I noticed a pattern I didn't like seeing. The vast majority of woman were uplifting towards both the women, saying how both of them looking beautiful. However, and this is the part I didn't like, the vast majority were commenting on the tanner woman for her curves. This post was to show how differently clothes looked on body types, like theirs, not a competition. The post was focusing on how the cloths looked on different bodies, not how different the bodies were; it was focusing on style, not their sizes.
I am built like a cartoon. Hated myself all through high school. It took a while to love my curves.
NONE of these are "new" pictures... For f***s sake Panda yall NEED to desperately go through and re-evaluate and fire A LOT of your journalists
I hope people aren't praising the plus size girl just because they think she needs it and criticizing people who just prefer the white girl's style. Those ain't no real compliments. To all the genuine ones, bravo 👍
Both women are beautiful. Both women look confidant. Seriously no matter your size or shape it's about loving the person you are, and finding what makes you feel good. I rock sweat pants and a pony tail most days.... And am completely ok with that. I see lots of people comparing their bodies to others.. we are all different and we are all beautiful
Yea... And it's astronomically more stylish and attractive on the slim person. Not shitting on fat people, I'm a big boy myself... But I also recognize that the very stylish suit I sometimes wear would look a hell of alot better if I was 25lbs lighter. Sorry, that's just reality. Deal with it.
Deal with this. That skinny girl doesn't look better in her clothes. No t or a just a square hipped man looking body. You tried it but it won't pass the smell test. Furthermore, nobody asked who you prefer. You should learn when to keep quiet.
Load More Replies...I loved all the outfits they are so cute where can I order all of them. It's not about the body it's how u wear it and know your going to rock it. There's also under garments you can wear to help everyone is beautiful no matter what shape you are don't feel body shamed feel Fierce don't let the outfit wear you you wear the outfit remember people look at the confidence the person has and that takes it all.
Why do you care what are they spending THEIR money on?
Load More Replies...They are both lovely, but I am seriously crushing on the curvy lass. I think I have found my type.
Good luck founding girl of this body type - huge ass, flat stomach.
Load More Replies...Pink, white jacket and maroon dress are the only outfits that looked batter on the skinny chick. They are both beautiful women.
Looks good on both but the plus sizer rocked it better....curves in the right places i suppose...have a couple plus size friends and their stomachs are way flatter than mines
There is no way the bigger girl's clothes are off the rack, they are clearly been altered to her curves. It is not really comparable in any way.
Just because you have an opinion that doesn't make it fact. You have no knowledge about what is going on in this instance. They don't know you from a can of paint and clearly aren't confiding in you about their clothes. You're a hater and are comparable to a whole lot of people. Misery loves company but you're not invited.
Load More Replies...Everyone has an opinion on style, I believe if you find your style.. wear what you want... If someone has a negative response that is there opinion.. who is to say what you like.. it's up to each individual.. some of the outfits I would never wear.. even when I was in my 20's or 30's .. but if you have it wear it.. if it makes you feel great. It's for you and not anyone else..to decide what your style is.. some things will look good others not so good.. it's about being your self.. not someone else...
Okay, now tell how many different sizes the plus girl wore. As bad as women's sizes are for being randomly assigned, they are at their worst in plus clothes.
Why was the thinner girl always wearing colors that washed her out while the same color on larger girl was designed for her skin color. Not a fair comparison. Why no acting and smiling from thinner girl?
Lol proof boobs and a tan make any outfit look good! (Both women were beautiful tho)
This is supposed to make plus size women feel better. That woman is not plus size she has big hips and big boobs and a flat stomach men love that.
Most look good on both, at this age, but fast forward 20 years and add 20 pounds to each. Now, let's do another comparison. The slender gal will still look good. But the heavy gal will be disgustingly obese, and nothing will look good on her.
The reason both are so hot is that they're healthy. Curvy one is just naturally curvy, and likely eats healthy to get that way, where as no one gets fat rolls without eating s**t. America is so stupid when it comes to weight: it's your own damn fault if you're fat, just stop eating fast food and chugging coke, and stop complaining
Opinions are like ass holes everyone has one including the assholes like you
Load More Replies...You're ugly and gross we get it you're not going to anything about it.
Load More Replies...It's a good idea, but the majority of plus sized women like me have fat rolls and that would make these clothes look very, very different. These models both have a smooth profile so it still isn't very realistic for most plus sized women.
