Baltimore loves its crab and seafood restaurants. The city is rightly known for delicious recipes using the iconic ‘Maryland crab,’ or blue crab, which made PETA’s attempts to get people to stop eating seafood quite a long shot.

The animal rights organization posted a huge billboard in the city, urging people to see each crab as an individual with a personality and go vegan. The scientific name for the species, Callinectes sapidus, means ‘savory beautiful swimmers’ in English, which pretty much sums up just how long we have been craving the sweet meat of these abundant creatures. Did PETA think the billboard would make any difference to people’s eating habits? Who knows. But it certainly did get people talking!

Local restaurant Jimmy’s Seafood was at the forefront of the backlash to the PETA ads, going on a Twitter rampage against PETA, some of their vegan supporters and pretty much anyone that crossed their path. “Crab is the backbone of Baltimore,” Luke David Maye, a representative of the restaurant told Bored Panda. “For decades, we have been known for our steamed blue crabs, soft crabs, and crab cakes. Every single Maryland restaurant serves some sort of crab dish.”

The extraordinary exchanges quickly went viral, as people couldn’t quite believe a business would go so public with its opinions. However, with the local delicacy of crab cakes ingrained into the local culture, we don’t think that Jimmy’s is going to be losing too much business over this. In fact, their frank and at times hilarious tweets have probably earned them a few extra fans along the way. The family-owned restaurant has been a fixture in the city since 1974 and has received a positive reaction to the Twitter storm so far. “People are thrilled to see a small, family-owned business stick up to such a treacherous and deceitful organization,” Luke told us. “We have a team that handles our social media. We all work hard on it, and it’s a group effort.”

I hate PETA, because they kill 90% of the animals brought to them (and even stole and euthanized family pets, look it up) and churn out lie after lie to support their ridiculous claims, but I can't see how this backfired on them. Ok, Jimmy's shared one article regarding the kill rates, but other than that they pretty much made PETA's point for them with their childishness.

Yeah can't see much backfire, if any at all. Would have probably been beter if Jimmy's started of with that article and then went on to dismantle PETA in terms of exactly how animal friendly and hypocritical they are.

"The Way This Local Seafood Restaurant Roasted PETA" Translated local seafood restaurant act's like twats online. Really why is this a story on BP? It's not remotely witty, it's just basic online trollying, find something that some one cares about and post something that contracdicts it then wait for a respounce, or BP to feature it as a story.

How did anything backfire here but for a ridiculous "twitter debate" from both sides, which did simply express opinions and assumptions rather than containing any facts on either side? Not worth the read.

I'm not vegan/vegetarian and I don't like PETA but I didn't enjoy this one. Some restaurants' accounts (like Wendy's of course) manage to come up with clever roasts and still seem overall friendly and likable. This just felt petty and defensive to me. Not epic.

I don't know how this roasting of PETA by this seafood restaurant is 'epic' in any way. This is childish and cringe worthy. I'm not a big fan of PETA myself but in this case I'm on their side. Also, congratulations for another anti-vegan post, BoredPanda! Let's fill our souls with hate against the people who do way more right than wrong with their life-style. Disclaimer: I'm not vegan, but posts like this slowly moves me towards it.

If posts like these can move you towards veganism, that says a lot about you. Where did you see anything remotely anti-vegan here? Being a restaurant that serves seafood is automatically anti-vegan? If I'm not with you, I'm against you? Yeah, that sounds about right for PETA mindset.

You do realize that you can buy (and cheap) any kind of article getting written? As well as buy just enough shares & likes to spread it out. There maybe was some mixture of truth, maybe one or two employees who behaved out of organization's best interest (who doesn't have problems like that hitting once and again..?) but this whole anti-peta story sounds like big bubble blown of thin air to me and very useful to those who can score some morality points without actually doing any change to the way they run their business (hey, look at me, I'm cooking pork, but at least I'm not like PETA, come leave your $ at my place). https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/peta-taking-pets/

JUST SOME OF WHAT PETA HAS DONE - IGNORANCE IS JUST STUPIDITY - LEARN ABOUT THEM BEFORE YOU SPEAK SUCH HATE PETA’s first undercover investigation resulted in an end to crippling experiments on monkeys, the first-ever police raid on an animal-testing laboratory, the first animal experimentation case ever heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, and the first-ever prosecution and conviction of an animal experimenter on cruelty-to-animals charges. PETA exposed and shut down the U.S. Army’s plan to shoot dogs at an indoor firing range, leading the military to ban the use of dogs, cats, and primates in wound experiments and training. In an unprecedented move, PETA closed a Texas slaughterhouse operation in which 30,000 horses were trucked in and left to starve in frozen fields without shelter. 1990’s After PETA exposed the backstage beating of orangutans by Las Vegas entertainer Bobby Berosini, his wildlife permit was suspended and his show closed. peta has taken my grandfathers dog, which was being taken care of perfectly fine but had a minor injury that had gotten infected. We had already taken her to a vet and had the dog on antibiotics for the infection. PETA came and took my grandfathers dog away and when my grandfather went to go retrieve his beloved dog; peta had already "ended the poor things suffering" to all of you that support peta, you are supporting what happened to my grandfathers beloved Teresa

It seems that they do admit. It was decided by field professionals that euthanizing is in best interest to deal with difficult situation so I'll leave decision to them because I didn't spend my life studying and working with animals to know better. Problem is overpopulation of dogs/cats and caused by humans in the first place and there seems to be just no pretty way to fix this problem. It's too bad that organisation that stands on this difficult but required stance regarding this complicated and ugly situation gets so much bad press while someone who doesn't do a thing and continues to collect cash on from unsustainable businesses now gets extra good publicity points for bashing the "evil organisation".

Nearly 16,000 rats and mice and 600 reptiles, many of whom were dying, were seized from waste-filled cages at Global Captive Breeders, LLC, after a PETA undercover investigation led to the largest animal rescue in California history. Thanks to scientists from PETA India, PETA U.S., and PETA U.K., India made it illegal to test cosmetics on animals and to sell cosmetics that have been tested on animals elsewhere within their borders. PETA persuaded leading brands like General Mills, Kroger, Dannon, Chipotle, Nestlé, Harris Teeter, Denny’s, and Dunkin’ Brands to adopt policies that encourage their suppliers to end cruel dehorning practices, in which calves’ horn tissue is painfully burned or gouged out of their skulls. The U.S. military banned the mutilation of animals in several medical training areas following a vigorous PETA campaign.

Numbers don't lie, and this particular organization gets a lot of money from donations. From people who care for life. Who don't know better. Stop the b******t PETA. We're on to you. I understand your disappointment, but PETA does not represent the whole vegan movement. They might have been at the frontline in exposures and in the headlines for controversies, but veganism started way earlier than PETA, with endorsement by many ancient traditions, especially in the East. If you love all lives, why not treat the crab and the kitty equally? Even though the latter is cuter and more cuddle-able, the crabs has exactly the same drive to survive, and right to thrive.

It's incredible and sad how people get downvoted for stating facts about animals: 1. We are selective about which we eat and which we protect, purely due to arbitrary culture. 2. All animals feel pain, want to live, and have their own individual personalities). Downvoting these statements says way more about the downvoter than the comment downvoted. Also, this is a stupid article to post here. Clearly the submitter/author just has an axe to grind against vegans or PETA. Bad Bored Panda!

This billboard is not about Peta, it's about saving animals from a cruel death. The company's reaction, attacking Peta as an organisation, is really childish. Even if Peta does wrong things as well, that doesn't make it right that the company makes animals suffer and die. The company just wants to distract viewers/readers from the real point (that they are hurting animals) by making accusations at Peta.

These are lies about PETA. If people want to eat animals, then they should occasionally think about the process. Animal treatment is often not good and slaughter is often horrifying. And in the case of crabs and lobsters being boiled alive, cruel. PETA and Humane Society are organizations fighting for the humane treatment of living things. I don't see Jimmys winning here. I think they look like jerks for passing fake stories to compensate for the fact that they do indeed, boil living things to death. Most people don't care about that. FINE! PETA’s campaigns have prompted fur-free assurances from more than 900 companies, including Calvin Klein, which became the first major designer to stop using fur after PETA invaded its office, and Ralph Lauren, which pulled fur from store shelves and donated its fur items

I think, that if PETA is so concerned with killing animals, start with the many millions of dogs, puppies and cats and kittens in county shelters, with high kill rate, and find them new homes! But I have en PETA intervene, illegally and take a woman’s dog, a chihuahua, off her property, and then euthanize it. So, until PETA cleans up their act and their organization, and treats all, and I mean ALL. Creatures, with the ethics they say they have, hen I’ll worry about not eating meat or seafood, and look at the vegan lifestyle. Get with it PETA , your dirty little secrets come out, as all dirty little everts do.

I am NOT vegan, but I'm convinced that in a few generations, kids will look back at today saying how gross and barbarian we were to have animal industry and to kill animals to eat them. I can see them grimacing, and then bite into a burger with veggies and fancy laboratory meat (that will actually taste nice by then)...

It's funny, but only if you're familiar with Baltimore. First, if there were only one blue crab left on the planet, Baltimoreans would fight each other to the death to be the one to eat it. Second, Baltimore is tacky. So very, very tacky, and not ashamed to be so. So this is the exact response I would expect to this billboard.

In March 2015, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced that in response to growing public concern about “how the animals are treated,” its elephant performances would end by 2018. This came after decades of PETA protests against cruelty to elephants in circuses, capturing Ringling’s abuse on video, and releasing photos of the circus’s violent baby-elephant training taken by a former Ringling trainer. However, in January 2017, Ringling announced that the saddest show on Earth for wild animals would end. On Sunday, May 21, in Uniondale, New York, it held its final performance. More than three decades of PETA protests and exposés documenting that animals were beaten, left to die, and much more had reduced the circus’s attendance to the point of no return.

(This is in reference to today's article on "outside dog given a voice" which quotes PETA in a positive way....... I can agree with part of this vision, because it's undeniable that the life of a pet is too often miserable, and it becomes downright hell for them when they get abandoned -- wild animals cannot be traumatized in that way, because their ability to fend for themselves is not taken away from them by domestication and over-sheltered life. But on the other hand I don't like neutering; I don't think we have the right to deprive animals of the capacity to pass down life, because they can never give consent. Phasing out animal breeding and pet shops is much more humane.

When on airplane you wouldn't listen to lobster dude giving advice to pilot on how to steer the wheel. Then how can anyone take seriously a guy on social media guy who fries lobsters for living and is giving advice on animals interest to someone who has spent good portion of life studying, working and saving animals. There is a problem of overpopulation of dogs/cats that were discarded - and the problem is ugly - and it's caused by people like the lobster dude in the first place - and the problem needs to be addressed in some way and whatever PETA has chosen to do in this regard, I'll just leave it to them, because I trust someone who spent time working in shelters more than guy who is frying lobsters (or some random articles on internet misinterpret facts or just portray certain nit picked facts in a way to support dudes who cook lobsters, pork or steak for living).

Dear PETA haters, your problem is that for you, the only animals worth saving are cats and dogs! While every other "useless" species can go extinct! The oceans can turn into dead zones and rain forests can disappear, but as long as we have cats and dogs what's to worry!!! PETA saves all species! Pigs, cows, orangutans, whales, sharks, lizards... There are so many other animals that need saving and some of them are on the verge of extinction! Thanks to our love for pets, the planet is overpopulated by stray cats and dogs that are being tortured or starved to death in our streets! Who can save all of them? People still buy "pure-bred" instead of adopting, they are the guilty ones by supporting puppy mills and pet stores! I don't believe PETA euthanizes animals for no reason, but if you have a problem with it, adopt those poor things and save them from PETA! Be the saviour PETA failed to be!

You did well, Jimmy, Peta sucks. Irony is, extreme vegans go on about how they love animals because they say, that all life is precious, at the same time, they will say:''anyone who eats meat, deserves to get cancer and die.'' So they are compassionate with animals but not with people who have different choices from them? Vegan-logic. No surprise most vegans are liberal. Same s**t. They are anti-bullying, and boast about acceptance and how tolerant they are, yet they are the worst bullies and the most intolerant towards anyone who disagrees with them. Liberal-logic. As for the English man, lol dude, England is not perfect either, especially regarding health issues.

PETA is a death cult.....they are all about making money for themselves (through their naive, gullible followers) and KILLING ANIMALS. PETA talks a good game, but reality is much, much different. They ADVOCATE and SPEAK OUT to have every pitbull and pitbull mix in a shelter or anywhere else killed. They also want all "feral" cats killed (and most are, in fact, dumped/ lost pet cats)....they kill dogs and cats at a very high rate at the one animal shelter they own in Virginia. They are a RICH group but do nothing to help REAL animals....just a lot of propaganda.

I don’t think it’s right for PETA to slaughter animals. But I don’t see how any omnivore would give a s**t what PETA does to animals. It’s hypocritical of PETA but it’s also hypocritical of omnivores to pretend like they care.

I disagree. Humans care about some animals on an emotional level. Even if it's not logical, it's not hypocritical to love a cat or dog but be fine with eating cows. They're very different animals - the former being companion animals and fellow predators, the latter being prey animals that we have raised and bred for thousands of years primarily as a food source. I feel like your thinking is lumping "other animals" into an inaccurate collective and ignoring the psychological and social reasoning behind these human feelings.

If only PETA spent their time and money actually working on educating people on pet overpopulation and how to save pets instead of harassing restaurants and trying to make people live by their beliefs they would be useful. This is what they are doing. For example this story caused internet discussions. People are commenting on both sides. Many comments about animal industry problems. Ad like this creates these sort of intersection points of different opinions where discussion and leanings happen. It's pretty good use of money. There is more ill animals than anyone can save, so if you only working on saving them you not gonna reach anything. Campaigning for the change of things is the only way to improvement and this is what ads are.

PETA's a bunch of hypocrites. They have a list of foods that are "accidentally vegan." On it is Oreo Cookies. Well Oreos are made with refined sugar that's filtered through cow bone char. When I e-mail them and asked them how it could possibly be vegan, they said "Well since we don't know the source we have to assume." BS. 90% of all conventional granulated sugar is filter through bone char. If it doesn't say Organic Sugar then it should not be considered Vegan. PETA are a bunch of hypocrites.

All animals feel pain, want to live, and have their own individual personalities). Downvoting these statements says way more about the downvoter than the comment downvoted.

FINE! Outdoor clothing company Patagonia and Stella McCartney have stopped buying wool from the Ovis 21 network in Argentina following a gut-churning PETA video exposé showing that lambs were exploited for “responsibly sourced” wool on “sustainable” farms. After a meeting with PETA, Kering also agreed to stop sourcing from Ovis 21 for all brands, including Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Brioni, Christopher Kane, Gucci, Volcom and Saint Laurent. Hundreds of thousands of animals were spared when the Environmental Protection Agency incorporated PETA recommendations for non-animal test methods into its endocrine disruptor testing program. Ben the bear was rescued from abhorrent conditions at a North Carolina roadside zoo and transferred to a retired-wildlife sanctuary in California after a long and hard-fought battle by PETA and others. Including Ben’s rescue, PETA saved more than 40 bears from concrete pits and dismal pens between 2012 and 2015.

Utah struck down a law that forced animal shelters to sell dogs and cats to animal laboratories on demand after PETA released its undercover investigation of laboratories at the University of Utah that experimented on animals bought from shelters. More than 110 companies, including H&M, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger, stopped selling angora rabbit wool after PETA released the first-ever exposé into the angora-wool industry. At PETA’s behest, Inditex, the world’s largest clothing retailer, donated its 20,000 remaining angora garments to Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Cats like Rainbow and Mango, who had holes drilled into their skulls, metal restraint posts screwed into their heads, and steel coils implanted in their eyes, were placed into loving homes after PETA helped shut down cruel and archaic brain experiments at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

More than 250 cats and dogs were rescued from Professional Laboratory and Research Services, a North Carolina–based contract animal-testing facility, after PETA released its shocking undercover investigation. This was the second time in U.S. history that a laboratory has been forced to surrender animals and shut down following a PETA investigation. Bolivia, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Mexico, Mongolia, Pakistan, Panama, the Philippines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Arab Emirates all stopped using animals for emergency medical training after PETA donated lifelike human-patient simulators to them. Dozens of top advertising agencies—including McCann Erickson, BBDO, J. Walter Thompson Worldwide, DDB Worldwide, TBWA Worldwide, Leo Burnett Worldwide, and Grey Global Group—banned the use of great apes in their ads after learning from PETA that animals suffer behind the scenes.

More than 26,000 animals were rescued from an exotic-animal dealer following a PETA investigation. It was the largest animal seizure in history. H&M became the first retailer to ban exotic skins from its stores worldwide after receiving PETA’s video exposé, which revealed extreme suffering in the exotic-animal skins trade. This paved the way for Ann Inc., PUMA, L Brands, Adidas, Overstock.com, Nike, Cole Haan, Arcadia Group, Adolfo Domínguez, and Mango to ban the sale of exotic skins as well. 2010’s Almost every major airline in the world—including Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, El Al Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Philippine Airlines, TAM Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, Vietnam Airlines, and others—stopped shipping monkeys and other primates to laboratories and laboratory suppliers following PETA campaigns. The HBO horse-racing series Luck was canceled after PETA went public with evidence obtained by whistleblowers showing that three horses had died

Gap Inc., J.Crew, Liz Claiborne, and other major retailers agreed to stop selling leather from China and India after a heartbreaking PETA investigation of the leather industry. Hundreds of thousands of animals were saved after PETA persuaded chemical companies and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to drop plans to kill them in painful chemical tests. PepsiCo, McDonald’s, Burger King, Capital One, AT&T, Honda, PUMA, Keds, Pfizer, Volkswagen, and The Hershey Company pulled their commercials featuring chimpanzees and other primates following PETA’s campaign. Sixteen elephants who had been forced to perform by the Hawthorn Corporation, an elephant-rental company, were relinquished and transferred to a sanctuaryafter PETA submitted evidence of their suffering. POM Wonderful, PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, and others stopped testing on animals after PETA uncovered evidence that they were funding cruel experiments.

Following PETA’s campaign, NASA pulled out of the Bion mission experiments—a joint U.S., French, and Russian program in which monkeys wearing straitjackets were to have electrodes implanted into their bodies and be launched into space. PETA closed Taiwan’s drowning tanks, which were used to kill stray and unwanted dogs. The country also passed its first-ever law against cruelty to animals. All car-crash tests on animals stopped worldwide following PETA’s campaign against General Motors‘ use of live pigs and ferrets in crash tests. Nielsen Farms puppy mill in Kansas was shut down and “permanently disqualified from being licensed” after PETA’s investigation of the facility revealed rampant sickness, abuse, and death.

I love seeing a good dragging of that hypocritical, animal-murdering, attention-whore, racist, misogynistic organization. F**K. PETA.

with PETA it is always a case of Do What We Say not what we do. They seem to kill more animals than save.

I've known that PETA was a hypocritical organization for quite some time and unsubscribed to their newsletter years ago. They can go f**k themselves.

Does no one saying the oceans are getting "raped" by ocean harvesting realize that US fishing and crabbing is highly regulated in order to keep the population at healthy numbers? You want to pick a fight about over-fishing talk to China...

PETA is the worst! They go around parading their vegan beliefs while disregarding and criticizing meat eaters. They stage elaborate ($$$$) campaigns that do little to really help animals. Sorry if PETA put up a billboard that might affect my business directly i would do the same.

PETA should care as much about abuse of people as animals. When is the last time they fed the homeless or stood outside an abortion clinic throwing red paint on the murderers going in and out?

Good for you, Jimmy's! If only PETA spent their time and money actually working on educating people on pet overpopulation and how to save pets instead of harassing restaurants and trying to make people live by their beliefs they would be useful. Next time I am in the area, I'll be patronizing your establishment. I love your stand against them.

When in plane you don't think of your self knowing better how to fly a plane than a pilot. Then why you think you know better about animal ethics than people who work with animals, who study animals, who dedicated a lot of their time to that matters.

I kill and eat animals BECAUSE I support Peta. Those animals I kill and eat were eating the Vegans food, so I am actually helping the Vegans out by saving their food. Also, PETA stand for: People Eating Tasty Animals.
