Pride Month 2022 has kicked off, and the LGBTQ+ communities are celebrating the freedom to be themselves. Which, even though it's the 21st century, is still apparently threatening to some people.
I know it sounds absurd, but take the subreddit "Are the Straights OK?" for example. Its members regularly discover posts that discriminate against minorities, and often do so in a way that resembles all those toxic cliches from 25, 75, and even a few hundred years ago.

Given all the problems they have, you might be surprised that wealth creation, according to new research from Merrill Lynch, is actually happening at a faster pace among diverse communities, including the black, Latino, and specifically, the LGBTQ+.
The study focused on "affluent households," which, according to the three reports from Merrill Lynch, means US households earning more than $125,000. Affluent gay, lesbian, and transgender households saw their net worth skyrocket by a whopping 76% since 2015. (For comparison, the average "affluent" home saw its wealth grow by 53% during this time frame.)

When I was a little kid, my library book bag was made out of fabric with little rainbows on it AND I had a rainbow blanket my Nana knitted for me. I adored them both and neither had anything to do with my subsequent realisation that I was queer, so bah to this ungrateful idiot.

I don't even know what they mean. Clearly I know that the LGBTQ+ community use the rainbow as a symbol of the spectrum of sexuality and gender identity, but . . . but . . . rainbows have always existed. And have had many different connotations and associations over time. I remember being told that rainbows were the Christian god saying he wouldn't cause another global flood.

Girls are to be wearing pink all over, and boys need blue, girls need flowers, horses, kitties, puppies and generally sweet stuff, while boys need motorcycles and chainsaws on their shirts, huh? Ok, nothing is wrong with motorcycles, chainsaws, cats or dogs, I think every child shall enjoy all of them, but still ... This is ridiculous. Before I even know what homosexuality was, I loved an 80s cartoon called "Rainbow Bright.' Not bc it represented anything other than a powerful girl who saved the world in my childhood imagination. I understand that the rainbow flag is the symbol of LGBTQIA+ but I think that the color scheme are beautiful regregardless. Shame on her for acting like it HAS to represent anything else but just a beautiful handmade blanket. I'll take it! Lol

I don't know Jen or her reasoning, and her note is very strongly worded and certainly comes off as ungrateful, but my first thought when I saw this is that it could be considered inappropriate due to the term "Rainbow Baby" where a rainbow on infant clothing is meant to symbolize a child that is born to a couple that had previously had a miscarriage. I know a few people that have displayed discomfort over their newborns wearing clothing with rainbows due to the association with the meaning of a "rainbow baby" as they had not previously had a miscarriage and didn't want to give that impression. Saying that, if this was Jen’s thought process on the matter, she still could have handled it more tactfully. If her objections to the blanket were in fact homophobic in nature, then yeah I agree, screw her!

Still very new to crochet and that looks fabulous!! The level of nastiness proves she was raised poorly. My mother crocheted me a blanket that looks like clown vomit. I thanked her profusely and still have it. A lot of time, effort, and care went into that ugly a*s blanket. I'd be ecstatic if it was as beautiful as this rainbow blanket!

This is a beautiful blanket and I am proud to say I used almost the exact ones to crochet a blanket for . . . Wait for it . . . My nephew! What did his parents say? Dad said cool it'll look nice with the rocking chair and mom loved it. It was a large blanket to be like a mommy and me but mostly for the baby. 4 years later and it's still used. Kid loves rainbow and unicorns and dinosaurs and bugs. And just to throw it out there, they are a hetero couple and I'm mostly straight and chose rainbow because it was just a beautiful yarn that was super soft

I was eating oranges while reading through these. I accidentally rubbed orange peel juice in my eye. That was still less painful then reading through some of these. It really isn't difficult to respect the autonomy of others, to recognize that other people can be very different from yourself and understand that this is okay and not a threat to your life or well being. And yet, people still manage to fail to grasp any of these life lessons.

I think it's important we are able to differentiate those that are clearly maliciously toxic and those of people struggling to come to terms with things. If people lash out at anyone with an opinion that differs just a little and started going "us vs them" then this movement is no different than the intolerance they are opposing.

This entire article would be 70% shorter or only 40 entries, since only about 30% are about homophobia, while the rest are misogynistic which is another kettle of fish. No pun intended. But here's one: why isn't hobophobia a thing? I see class bigots shy away from hobos all the time and even yell at them and call the cops. Hobophobia is a real problem in our class bigoted society.
