Step by step, jump by jump, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are coming to an end. In just a couple of days, the athletes will abandon their 'anti-sex' cardboard beds and return to their normal regime. If we consider tirelessly maxing out your human capabilities normal, that is.

So, we at Bored Panda decided it's the perfect time to put together a new list of memes that sum up this amazing spectacle. Continue scrolling to check out the pictures and catch up on the series here.

RELATED:

In 2013, when it bid for the 2020 Summer Games, Tokyo estimated it would spend $7.3 billion. However, by summer 2020, an Oxford economist told the Associated Press that Tokyo’s costs had already more than doubled to $15.84 billion and became the most expensive Summer Games on record. Local organizers have disputed that number but they admitted in December 2019 that costs had risen to $12.6 billion.

Competing estimates from a national audit board and national newspaper are even higher, saying it could be nearly $30 billion.

I'm wondering if anyone commenting realises that this is a reference to Kerri Strug at the 1996 games who vaulted on a bad ankle (under the pressure of her coach), ruptured all her ligaments for the gold and then could never compete again. I'm glad Simone wasn't convinced by any outside source she had to compete and risk her safety.

And she is not the only one pushed over her limits by the way! Elena mukhina an amazing Russian athlete of gymnastics had also broken her leg before Olympics! She knew she wouldn't be able to prepare on time but she was pushed to remove the cast and train anyway! She broke her spine in a training due to the fact she didn't heal properly and that left her quadriplegic! The even sadder thing is that after her severe injury she said that they will finally leave her alone! Her coach never visited her after her injury and she died in her 40's after being 20 years on a wheelchair!

Imagine being angry that the best gymnast in the world, who represents your country, needed to stepped back for her own mental health, and you feel entitled to throw a fit and demand she be removed from the team while screaming she hates America, because she didn't perform for your entertainment. The way Americans have vilified and attacked their own teams in the Olympics this year, cheering when our own teams lose, is one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen.

Not just Americans. Piers Morgan (a Brit) was hatefully vocal about this. He has a track record of callousness when it comes to mental illness.

Save the olympics? The US got loads of medals so far without her. Even if they don’t have any gymnasts at all, they have like three dozen medals in swimming alone.

And a coach that didn't make her go out there and vault on a broken ankle to "win" when the medal was already won. Simone Biles is a HERO!

I think she was right to call off the programs. Her mental health, along with everybody else is too important to ignore. If these athletes are not mentally healthy how do you expect them to do their best? These are people, not characters in a cartoon.

They didn't even act as if it were her JOB. They acted as if they owned her and she had to do what they ordered. I think one sign of a top athlete is protecting one's health.

Well, it's a good thing your ill informed opinion matters not & that those who honor, support & stand by our team/s & athletes, will be far louder, far more vocal, far more supportive, more compassionate, kind & caring, then any of you haters, could ever imagine being. Why? Because at the end of the day, we live in reality, and understand that these young athletes are humans. Not indestructible robots,on display for your jollys & entertainment. So many YOUNG (13-17) athletes have destroyed their bodies..at the demands of their coaches (Karri Strug. US Gymnastics, Bella Kyroli,Coach. Also another gymnast, I believe Russia or Korea? She was forced to remove her cast way to early to train..landed wrong and broke her spine, forever making her a quadriplegic. Her coach never even came to visit her, post injury.)and THANK GOSH there are decent human beings that will stand beside and support those who chose to put their physical & mental health BEFORE THE APPROVAL, PRAISE of fair weather wanna be "fans", that have zero comprehension of the meaning of Kindness, support & dedication. Oh & fyi, The OP, was referring/referencing the Karri Strug/Bella Kyroli incident, not Biles... figured I'd point that out to you, since you automatically assumed (ya know what they say, when you ASSume!!)..incorrectly..Need me to lift your rock,so you can crawl back under it, Troll??

Of course, these Olympics are special. The city had to postpone the Games for a year after Covid-19 made hosting the international event impossible, and to top it all off, the city won’t receive the tourism boom that usually accompanies the event.

But a 2020 paper by Oxford economist Bent Flyvbjerg discovered an interesting fact: "every Olympics since 1960 has run over budget, at an average of 172 percent in real terms, the highest overrun on record for any type of megaproject."

In other words, there might be something wrong with the Olympics bidding process as a whole.

As Vox pointed out, some of the supposed benefits of hosting the Olympics have come under scrutiny by locals and economists alike. Economists Victor Matheson and Robert Baade outlined the potential benefits as "the short-run benefits of tourist spending during the Games; the long-run benefits of the ‘Olympic legacy’ which might include improvements in infrastructure and increased trade, foreign investment or tourism after the Games; and intangible benefits such as the ‘feel-good effect’ or civic pride."

The Games can also provide a brief employment benefit and stimulative effect. But it's not as significant as we might think: "Overwhelmingly, the studies show actual economic impacts that are either near-zero or a fraction of that predicted prior to the event," Matheson and Baade write.

Pacific University professor Jules Boykoff criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for running itself like a "profit-gobbling cartel."

"For too long, the IOC has claimed that the city doesn’t have to build new infrastructure, that it’s the city’s decision. Of course, host cities have to build new venues if they actually want to host the Games. Whitewater kayak venues don’t grow on trees," Boykoff wrote in a 2017 Los Angeles Times column. "In truth, the IOC chips in for operating costs by essentially laundering money from its lucrative corporate sponsorships and television rights deals. That’s all well and good, but it’s time the organization stepped up and contributed to infrastructure costs as well."

As the Tokyo Olympics plays out in virtually empty stadiums, the IOC will continue raking in profits but it's the Japanese people who will have to pay the bill.

Honestly, I love it when my dad talks about stuff that happened on the Olympics. I don't really care about sports, but it's fun to listen to someone who is enthusiastic about it

The runners who are behind him crossing the finish line! In the 200m this Olympics he beat Usain Bolt's speed for that distance. And really the only reason Bolt won the 100m was because he is taller and could lean forward further. Ya, gonna get down voted on that one. But he's our guy! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
