Woman Throws Dog Waste In Her Neighbors’ Bins And Doesn’t See The Problem With It, BF Ends It

While most people would agree that keeping the streets clean is important, there seem to be certain disagreements about the use of trash cans, specifically personal ones. Obviously, bringing your huge waste bags and clogging the personal trash can someone is paying for is off-limits. But what about a small piece of waste, namely bagged dog waste, when there are no public containers around? This sort of question was raised by this Redditor who asked online whether she was a jerk to throw dog waste in her neighbor’s trash can, making her boyfriend take over walking his dog due to them being unable to come to an agreement on the topic.

More info: Reddit

The woman was about to throw away the dog waste in someone else’s can when her boyfriend stopped her

A woman recently posted to a Reddit community online after she and her boyfriend could not agree about whether it is okay to use a neighbor’s trash can to get rid of dog waste.

The woman shared that she had just moved in with her boyfriend and his dog a month ago and was enjoying walking the man’s dog in the mornings, while he did evenings.

However, the situation changed when one morning, the man didn’t have to work and joined his girlfriend in walking the dog.

As sometimes during their walk, the dog would poo and the woman would put it in a doggy bag and then throw it into a garbage can before continuing, so it happened this time. However, as the girlfriend was about to put the bag with dog waste into the garbage bin, her boyfriend stopped her, saying she could not use other people’s trash can.

Despite the woman arguing that the trash cans were meant for trash and she wouldn’t hold on to dog poop for the entire walk when there was a perfectly good garbage can, the man called her rude, ended up carrying the trash, and took it upon himself to walk his dog going forward.

This sort of problem was discussed in various articles online, for example, Wirecutter were addressing a concern raised by readers in their article How Do I Stop People From Throwing Poop Bags in My Garbage Can.

The writer of this article shared she is a dog owner herself, and knowing her dog’s general routine helps her figure out their route so she is able to toss the bag into a town trash can, while during times when they take a different route or when it takes her by surprise, she simply carries the bag along until she gets home or reaches a public disposal option.

However, the woman noticed a different opinion by some people online, who thought it is ridiculous for homeowners to get annoyed at people throwing bags with dog waste in their trash cans. For example, Mike Gutman was advocating for this opinion, saying “I would much rather live in a world where people who see trash on the ground pick it up and the nearest receptacle would be an OK place to throw that trash away.”

Gutman explained for Coloradoan that “if he has an option to go to a public garbage can that’s close by, he’ll choose that,” yet “you might call him a bad person, but he thinks it’s within the realm of being a reasonable human and neighbor to think that’s OK.”

The writer for Wirecutter reached out to sanitation departments across the country and received an answer that in New York, at least, it is illegal to dispose of one’s trash in someone else’s bin without permission and people are advised to use the public or their home trash for dog waste.

Wirecutter also listed various tips for trash can owners who face such a problem and these included giving pet owners the benefit of the doubt and assuming they do not know such behavior might be unwelcome by a homeowner by taping a simple sign to the can’s lid that says something along the lines of “This is not a public trash can”.

Gutman, on the other hand, was campaigning for stickers that denote a person’s willingness to harbor dog waste in their bin.

Finally, on a more funny note, Wirecutter suggested scaring the bejesus out of potential users of one’s waste can by keeping Halloween decorations all year long.

Coming back to the woman’s story, Redditors voted the woman and not her boyfriend to be a jerk in this situation. What’s your take on it? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

The majority of Redditors judged the woman to be a jerk in this situation

I am very confused by the strong reactions here. If my garbage can is at the curb, you are welcome to drop your tied-shut poop bag in it. If my can is back by my house, don't walk across my property to do that. It's just all about being reasonable - expect to carry it if you have to, but if a reasonable solution presents itself, ditch the poop.

Thank you! I will not walk up to someone's house. But if the trash can is on the curb it's fair game. That's what trash cans are for. All our outdoor cans are covered here. Who the hell is going outside, opening up the outdoor trash can, and giving it a big sniff? That's someone with issues.

The amount of times I see poo bags dangling from tree branches like s****y Christmas ornaments on hiking trails is what gets me. People refuse to carry it so they stick it somewhere visible to "get on the way back," but then they don't pick it back up.

Wow! This is ridiculous! People protecting their trashcan. I am more than okay with a neighbor throwing a bag of poo in my trashcan rather than leaving it on the sidewalk. Even for the simple sake of diginty and not having to carry a warm bag of shìt, toss in the closest trash bin near.

I am a dog owner as well as someone who leaves bins in an accessible place away from my house. If your bins are on your property, I will not trespass to dispose of dog waste. If they are on the curb, they are public domain. I would much rather see someone toss a poop bag into my bin than not pick it up due to lack of disposal options. It's a garbage bin. It already stinks and should be cleaned regularly.

I’m a dog walker and I have my own dog, so I pick up and dispose of many poops every day. My rule for other people’s trash can is that if it’s at the curb and hasn’t been picked up yet I’ll throw a poop bag in it. If it’s been picked up, I’m not throwing poop in someone’s empty bin that they’re going to haul back up to the side of their house or into their garage. If a dog poops 2 minutes into an hour walk and there’s nowhere appropriate to dispose of it, I’ll carry the damn bag for 58 minutes. It’s part of having dogs.

She is so TA. Someone did this to me. My bin was out by the road because it was trash day. Tossed in their dog's c**p in the middle of July, after the trash had been picked up. I don't want anyone's dog c**p dumped in my bins, especially when it would cook for a week if I didn't notice it. If you want to pay my trash pickup fees, then I might be more flexible.

Its a simple thing. Its not yours, don't touch it without asking. I know some people who literally hose out their trashcans once a month. If someone through dog s**t in there, it would set them off for sure. all people have to do it ask. that said, Nextdoor is the best for watching local karens lose their s**t over everything. I wont comment but I popcorn eat there all the time.

Dog's poop hermetically sealed in a plastic bag, thrown in a waste bin, public or private, and will be collected soon. Where is the problem?

    Nikki Sevven

"Hermetically sealed" means that air can neither leave nor enter. Dog poop bags are not hermetically sealed. Dropping a heavy garbage bag on top of it would displace the air inside the poop bag, and it would burst like popping bubble wrap.

I would absolutely mind if you throw something in my trash can. Even if it's at the curb, waiting for pick-up. I don't want anything smelly in my trash can. I don't put anything that smells in it. I freeze everything that smells until it's garbage day, then put it in. The big reason is that we have coyotes, rats, mice, and raccoons that are attracted to the smell. Also, unlike many cities, our proprieties go up to the road, so the curb is mine. Someone once threw a whole carton of shrimp in my bin and I was not a happy camper; I had to disinfect the whole thing with enzymes to get the smell away.

I'm on the YTA side. I had someone do this to me and it sucked. The garbage had already been collected for the day and the bag got stuck to the bottom, meaning it was not going to come out at the next pickup. Our can also came up to just below my chest so there was no way I (or anyone in my family for that matter) could reach in and get it. Moreover, what if your dog has a health issue spread by its stomach contents? Our dog had hookworm when we first adopted him so we had to be extra diligent until his treatment was finished. If the bag had ripped it could have contaminated the can and potentially spread the parasite. Long story short, it's a d**k move, don't do it.

Wow. Did not expect everyone to be on the bfs side. Don’t throw bulky items into someone else’s bin because it takes up space they may need. However, I would think nothing of tossing a tiny doggy bag into a stranger’s bin if it’s properly tied. Thanks to the comments, I now see both sides but it wouldn’t bother me if it was my bin. I’m just glad you cleaned it up.

Everyone who does this is an AH. Where I live, we have to pay for the garbage disposal. Also we have 4 trash cans. One each for paper, compostable, recyclable and normal trash. If they find a plastic bag in the compostable trash, they leave the full trash can behind and you have to remove the s**t. Nice. If you don't want to clean up behind your dog, then don't get one.

No one said they're leaving it in the compost. They're leaving it in the trash. And you must live somewhere with great city funding if the compost man will dig through the trash looking for plastic bags before they even pick the bin up. Ours won't even get out of the truck. Are you sure that's not a rumor you heard?

How could someone not get that this is wrong? I would think even most people who do this would admit that it isn’t the right thing to do. It’s literally against the law in most areas. Yet she is trying to make this about her being “punished” for a “difference of opinion.” What an idiot.

I don't get why it's wrong. All the bins are in an alley, not up by their house. I can legally go through your trash on the curb, but can't put a tint, sealed bag in it? That is ridiculously territorial.

Been a dog owner for over 45 years. I would NEVER throw poop in someone else's trash container ... that's just rude and lazy. Yes, it's obvious from the comments here that some people are OK with that, but many are not. I carry a nice, handy treat pouch that goes over my shoulder and holds my phone, keys, treats, unused poop bags, and yes, used poop bags when needed. With the treat pouch, I don't have to have the used poop bag in my hand for the rest of the walk and when I get home, I dispose of it in MY trash. Honestly, if you have a dog, carrying and disposing of poop bags in the most responsible, considerate way comes with the territory.

Here you can put a sticker on the bin if people are welcome to throw poo in it. However, as it only takes one heavy bag thrown on a poop bag to make it explode and cover the bin with poop many hesitate to do so.

Public garbage can in a park or along a trail, fine. Garbage can that a homeowner is responsible for cleaning and maintaining, don't do it. I don't have a dog and I have to keep my cans in my very small garage, so I take pretty good care of it. I run a business and my clients also come through the garage, so I don't want it smelling bad. I don't have a dog, there should never be a reason for me to clean up dog poop.

And in another part of the forest: I think it is illegal here to REMOVE some items from bins. Example: beer and wine bottles can be returned to specific store for $$. But some people can't bring them back (old sick lazy whatever) and just put them in their recycling bins. Then poor people might wander around and check out the bins especially in wealthy areas. If they take out the recyclable wine or beer bottles that's against the law. Life is interesting

Personally I don't care (we throw our own dog poo bags in there, what's one more from a neighbor?) but where I live it's illegal. It's considered to be theft of services. The rationale is that Person A pays the city to take away their trash. If Person B throws something in Person A's garbage can, then Person A is now paying for Person B's trash to be taken. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing the intent of the law was to prevent people from putting a whole bag of garbage into a dumpster behind a grocery store, restaurant, etc.

I don’t even put my own dog’s business in my own bin. The bin is plastic and over time will smell of poop that does not come out even after bleaching, lesson learned after the last city we lived in let us put it in the compost bin and that bin would get gross. Our current city also has pickup every two weeks, so if you miss pickup it’s now waiting four weeks. The park bins get picked up every day so it’s worth it to drop the lot off there.

The bin is kept in an alley AWAY from the house. Garbage stinks in the summer regardless of what's in there. A poop bag is not going to make it worse. I'd rather someone use my garbage can rather than not cleaning it up at all.

In our city each alley has generally three dumpsters to a block with four houses. There is no "assigned" dumpster, and people can and do use whichever one still has room in it. It's not a big deal to anyone, because we all pay for trash removal as part of our city utilities.

I've stepped in enough poo that people didn't want to pick up, or seen bags along trails or sidewalks. I would be happy for people to drop bags in my trash if it meant it wasn't left lying around. The best would be to take it back to your own can, but any disposal method is better than none.

I see all the YTA but I don't get it. I'd prefer a dog walker to put the poop in my outside trashcan/dumpster. Instead you get people leaving poop on the grass, a bag in the trash makes her NTA. Also if the boyfriend does budge why not request doggy poop stations from the city? A lot of places have them now

Eh. I personally wouldn't care if someone chucked it in my on the curb trash can. As long as it was actually tied. The last house I lived in had giant bins for 4-5 neighbors in the alleyway. That said I do not personally put my dog's poop bags in someone else's curb trash.

This actually makes me mad. We don't have alleys for the bins by me and if the bin is on the curb it's because it's about to be picked up, iv had someone throw dog poo in my bin and trash got delayed i smelled poo for weeks and because of the hot day my bin was taken over by maggots. It's nasty I was livid I don't own a dog and still had to deal with dog poo issues. Take it to your own bin or a public!

They may be issued by the city, but they are still paid for by the individual. Not yours, don't touch it. I can see her point since they are left in an alley, not brought in and out from people's property, but still, just don't.

Your garbage in someone else’s trash bin leaves less room for the owner’s trash. That’s why there are illegal dumping laws in the US. In some jurisdictions, homeowners have to pay for garbarge service as well.

YTA, it’s just rude to put it in someone else’s trash can. Is it really a big deal to carry the bag?

I see all the YTA but I don't get it. I'd prefer a dog walker to put the poop in my outside trashcan/dumpster. Instead you get people leaving poop on the grass, a bag in the trash makes her NTA. Also if the boyfriend does budge why not request doggy poop stations from the city? A lot of places have them now

It's your practice to get rid of a bag of s**t as soon as possible. Your bf should do the same.

A tiny bag of dog poop is not taking up space needed for other trash. Even if it's a Great Dane poop. It's not unreasonable at all.

Stop externalizing the negative aspects of owning a dog.
