Artist Yuge Zhou is trying to reshape how your mind perceives reality.
Zhou takes site-specific footage of environments and strangers going about their daily lives, collaging hundreds of video clips to look like moving cubist paintings. The scenes she creates—like the subways of New York City turned into a surreal clock made up of commuters, or mirroring the arc of the sun across both sides of the Pacific Ocean—become intricate explorations into themes of isolation, community, and the nature of longing.
The spaces that have formed Zhou’s work over the years—from beaches to parks and subways to city streets—are now eerily empty as we grapple with self-isolation. Zhou’s work offers a reminder of a world that, despite its fragmentation, is still able to connect in harmony and will one day form communities again.
