The Hair Project is a Montreal initiative that provides free haircuts to Montreal women’s shelters monthly.

Haircare can be a costly need in someone’s life, and might not be accessible to everyone. Their Facebook page says “We aim to provide these services as frequently as possible, and more importantly, for free. It can have positive effects for self esteem, confidence, & provides a beneficial 1-on-1 experience for people receiving these services.”

Their mandate states that “People deserve dignity, & care beyond the bare essentials, and we strive to help them feel good about themselves in the ways that we can, with the skills we have”.

Since they have started in January 2018, they have provided 50+ haircuts and have no intentions of slowing down.

This Montreal initiative provides free haircuts to Chez Doris, a Montreal day shelter for women, and will be expanding to The Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal in October. They have also partnered with Rock Camp for Girls and Gender Nonconforming Youth, a non-profit organization that fosters the promotion of self-esteem, skill-building and critical thinking skills for youth through collaborative music composition and performance. They supplement the music component with workshops based on feminist and anti-oppression frameworks that provide campers with a space for critical examination and empowerment.
