The veterinarian said its mange scabies usually shows up on the ears/elbows / around the eyes and it is extremely Itchy — the dogs will scratch until their skin bleeds —- scabies is also contagious to you and your family — if it is scabies there are no OTC products that will cure it — your dog needs antibiotics/medication for the itching and medication to kill the mites having said that veterinarian ask me these questions – has your dog been around another dog or cat recently that might have had scabies —- dogs have to get the mites from somewhere — if your dog hasn’t been around other dogs it is most likely not scabies — I say this because what you describe would be more a symptom of Demodex mites or hypothyroidism — the dog needs to be in contact with another dog to get mange. There are two kinds of mange and two kinds of mites. One is sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies. This is extremely contagious. The other is demodectic, which is not as contagious but still problematic. Mange mites are extremely common, but most often dogs that are susceptible to mange are usually thin, sick, or otherwise immune-compromised. It’s not uncommon in stray dogs who of course don’t have adequate shelter or nutrition.

Mites are less likely unless this is a puppy with a weak immune system, or it could possibly be Scabies mites. (Typical ear mites prefer kittens, so it is rare to see any appreciable ear mite infection in adult dogs.) Scabies LOVE the ears, and this will be especially evident if there is any roughened scabbing along the ear margins. (Scabies also primarily affect the elbows and hocks so check those areas too for any skin irritation or crusting.)
