The future turned out a whole lot differently than people expected. For example, Simon Newcomb, a Canadian-American astronomer and mathematician, said: "Flight by machines heavier than air is unpractical and insignificant, if not utterly impossible." 18 months later, the Wright Brothers flew a Kittyhawk. Not to praise Google to much, but this still basically true compared to what was the standard at that time. Have you SEEN the search pages of those old search engines? The fact that you can even find the search field without it being obscured by thousands of blinking banners is basically a Google invention
That's still true. Staring page is pure. Weather, news, ads, etc appears only as a result of search.
Already gone to duckduck. Working for now. So happy. Hope this doesn't change. Left fb. No twitter. No snapchat. Nothing. Just duckduck and e-mail. Fuckem
Duckduckgo has done this now, no ads, no tracking. I like it much better.
I'm dating myself here, but when cable television came out, the big draw was that there were NO commercials on ANY cable TV channel. That didn't last very long....
Sounds like a good business model. But ecosia will plant trees with the money they make so switched to them. I like that I've planted 50 trees this year.
Purity tasted the taste of money. Money changes characters, people, intentions .The purity became greed...
Looking at the past in good on a personal level, too. "Self-Reflective Awareness (SRA) is a 'meta-cognitive' ability, meaning that it involves thinking about and reflecting on one’s own mental processes," Gregg Henriques, Ph.D., wrote. "Someone with good SRA is able to generate a narrative of self that is complex, clear, and multifaceted and is able to communicate that narrative in a way that allows others a much better understanding of where one is coming from."
Originally, Apple's whole point was to bring computing to the people at a low cost. Boy, did they do a 180 on that philosophy.

Amazon already does? What do they give for free they could milk?
Load More Replies...There are a number of different facets to SRA, including knowingnow your family story and developmental history, understanding your needs, motivations, and emotions, understanding your defenses and how you handle criticism, understanding your strengths, and weakneses, understanding your beliefs/values and worldview, knowing your pupose in life and how you make meaning, knowing how others see you, knowing the 'cultural bubble' that you live in. Exploring these areas can dramatically increase the results of one's self-reflection.
The Embarrassment wants to bring it back and do away with the regulation guidelines regard Asbestos..
It's fine unless disturbed. It would be safe in portland cement until someone decided to know it down. I still find it fascinating that the "snow" they used at the end of "White Christmas" was actually asbestos!
This may all sound very complex, but, at its simplest, reflection is about careful thought. It gives the brain an opportunity to pause, untangle and sort through observations and experiences, consider multiple possible interpretations, and create meaning. And every little bit counts. Research by Giada Di Stefano, Francesca Gino, Gary Pisano, and Bradley Staats in call centers showed that employees who spent 15 minutes at the end of the day reflecting about what they learned performed 23% better after 10 days than those who didn't.
But they did not... And now one asks oneself... one bullet would most likely prevent WWII... but what if another one like him would pop out? And what it would be worse?

Load More Replies...How they treated her at the end of the last episode ruined the entire series. Here was a woman who fought her entire life against tyranny. Who devoted her life to the freeing of hundreds of thousands of slaves, who was repeatedly taunted by Cersei and made to watch her most beloved companion and friend beheaded by her. When she gave in to a moment of vengeance, it was decided she had to die. Yet Robert started an entire rebellion based on a lie because he had love nuts for another man's woman, and they made him king. F*ck this show for doing that to her while rewarding him for much worse crimes. If they tried to promote female equality in this show, they failed.
Daenerys, will still work as name. But not Khaleesi. In fact they totally ruined the entire show and the story by completely destroying it's most heroic and central character

The episode of Seinfeld where Elaine is dating a guy who shares a name with a murderer. He keeps getting mistaken for him so she gets him to change his name. She picks up a sports magazine and is trying to find a name for him in there, and comes up with "OJ" (Simpson, she was referring to). The episode was from 93, the murders happened 94.
Yes, but he got away with it simply because he is black. The government feared a riot from the black community if he were to be convicted. It's utterly disgusting, really.

The German version is worse. They dropped "man", just referring to a "black", which adds further to the derogatory tone.
Ach, Hans, immer dieser Unsinn... Dropping " man" in this (yes, very strange sentence) is grammaticly and semantically100% correct. When these terms were still used "black man" reffered to "Schwarzer" (as "white man" to "Weißer"). "Schwarze Person" is total nonsense and "Mensch dunkler Hautfarbe" has never been used. The literate translation is not the correct one. The correct translation (regardless of the subject) into German is the one written in that textbook.

By now, probably. But the problem with anti-vaccers is not really that they are more likely to catch a disease. They still profit from the immunization of the general population (which makes less of the disease to go around), but don't contribute to it. That's what bothers me more
Load More Replies...I know this is nitpicking, but judging by fashion and hairstyle I think this is from the early 20’s, not the 00’s.
I remember reading about the massive typhoid/scarlet fever/maybe something else epidemic in New York City not long after this photo. Thousands dying each week. The police were seconded to the doctors carrying out immunizations, and it eventually got so that they had to be made mandatory - one quote used in the story was "get a shot or get shot".
Two things that never get old: Dark humor and kids that aren't vaccinated.
Wonder how many people they killed by infecting babies or the immuno-compromised. Sad that this idiocy continues into the 21st century.

I just think that shows how bad things really are when someone can have that bad of a reputation (everybody did really know about it in Hollywood), yet nobody feels comfortable speaking up about it.
This is why I don't trust Hollywood c***s and Disney c***s. All I get from Hollywood and Disney are alcoholics, drug addicts, pedophiles, abusive gender pay gaps, abusive sexism in general, con artists, soul-sellers, and people who abuse minors with evil contracts, drugs, alcohol, and other things that pimp out the minors for profit at the expense of morality. No wonder why former child stars ended up getting psychologically f****d up like Lindsay Lohan, Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, Miley Cyrus, Malcaulay Culkin, Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, and other people. Because Hollywood and Disney are controlled by cruel predators from their heartless corporations.

The food pyramid
there's a lot of hostility towards carbs, and gluten at the moment.
Load More Replies...Well it depends on what you do. When this was popular, people worked more with their body, so they needed energy. Nowadays most people sit in front of a PC all day and get fat if they eat like this.
Is this not still in use? The switch from the four food groups to the food pyramid was sometime in the 90s as I recall, so lifestyles weren't that different and people weren't that healthier.
Load More Replies...Or... you know... the growing amount of obese population. That's what happens when you base a diet in simple carbs. You get hungry pretty fast and overeat. Overeating leads to weight gain
Load More Replies...And following these guidelines has caused morbid obesity, everything is upside down, we're in the upside down.
I have a friend in her 40s who still has a hard time understanding our improved medical guidelines for eating. In the 1960s and 1970s, the US government really pushed the empty carbs of refined wheat products. I only eat whole-grain products, and target 45 g or less of total carbs per meal. My friend sees my meat and veggies and fruit and shrieks "you need bread!"
Bottom one. Not gluten, but carbs with no nutrition.. this is because in the oast, bread and similar just filled your belly. Food has changed. We are not starving now. So the pyramid is sort ofok, but google todays nutrition eeds. Not thesame st all
Simple carbs are bad. They convert quickly to sugar, and if your body doesn't need that much sugar/energy at the moment, will be stored as fat. Complex carbs, like vegetables & whole wheat, are slower to convert & will release sugar at a slower pace.
Yep this is super important for women especially which is why we just get cast off and downvoted for talking about it.

ugh I really didn't like the joker in Suicide squad. And it's unfortunate Leto and his attention-hogging antics overshadowed Harley Quinn, because in my opinion Margot Robbie was the only good thing about that movie.

The whole "cousins" thing they pulled in the english dub of Sailor Moon back in the day with Haruka and Michiru (named "Amara" and "Michelle" in the dub), who were originally written as a lesbian couple.
I know that lesbian couples in a kid's show would have been a big deal at the time that it came out, but looking back now, they really did a piss-poor job at trying to make their relationship not seem romantic while also claiming they were related

Kevin Spacey is a brilliant actor. However, due to the scandals related to his sexual proclivities, and mental instability, he's been blacklisted. He went a little over the deep end with his method acting and essentially became Frank Underwood.
He didn't seem to be hiding the young male prostitute with a terrible bleach job and eyeliner when I saw him in NYC one day.

Yes!! If only I had a cent for every person who has told me they didn't want to visit me because they're "not crazy"... I always reply the same thing: "I haven't met any crazy person yet". Signed: a psychiatrist. By the way, thanks for sharing against stigma. Hope one day it won't exist.

Not to mention that that field actually attracts the mentally unbalanced to begin with. I don't think it'll ever be given the serious consideration and attention that it needs.
Until insurance companies quit separating physical illnesses from mental illnesses, we will have this problem. The brain is part of the body.
That’s the view that didn’t age well. Get with the times.
Load More Replies...Right and that is due in part to the people you know being influenced by popular culture to have a negative view of therapy and such. Load More Replies...It's referring to 09/11/2001, the most horrific day in American history. Two airplanes were hijacked by terrorists (Al Qaida) and they flew them in to the 2 World Trade Center towers. In all, over 3,000 people were killed, and both towers collapsed. They also crashed a plane in to the Pentagon. They tried to do the same thing with Flight 77, but heroes knew what was happening, broke in to the cockpit and deliberately crashed the plane in Shanksville, instead of the Capitol It may not have the same impact on the international level, it happened 18 years ago, but most Americans shudder when that date is mentioned. 9-11 is the number to call in an Emergency. Osama Bin Laden chose that date to attack America. It's astounding to me that children born on 9/11/01 will be turning 18 this year. I hope they've been able to live normal lives. As awful as it all was, I don't think this is awful and it shouldn't really be on this list.
I read somewhere that if you figure in inflation, Avatar is still higher grossing than Endgame; and also if you look at the number of ticket sales. But they desperately did everything they could to dethrone Avatar (launching campaigns, using social media, bringin Endgame fans to buy more then one ticket and to beg their friend to also buy tickets, ...). Honestly, who cares. Both are Disney movies anyway
If you figure in inflation Gone with the wind is the highest grossing movie ever
