Because it’s still worth it and he still learned it after 30. He didn’t claim it to be more affordable. He just said it isn’t a waste of money.

Same, when I moved into this place (in 2008) I think I paid the movers $400 and it was worth every penny. I gave a friend the cash to pay for me and went to work and when I got home, everything was in my new place.

Took me days and days to pack up a 900 square foot apartment (not including the furniture). The two moving men had the entire apartment down four flights of stairs in the uhaul within an hour. 😲. Totally worth the $300.

This is an important thing to know. As we age, preserving one's energy (and wear on assorted body parts) is worth scrimping and saving to afford. At 74, I wish I had learned this decades ago.

Hence the list states things one learns over 30. Also, your friends can help you, but it's nothing too pleasant for them. Therefore it is *worth it* to hire movers and leave your friends alone, if you can afford it, clearly pizza is cheaper. That's the entire idea behind this life hack

It's only worth it if you have the money. In my 20's I'd pay my friends with beer and pizza. Last time I moved, my company paid close to $10K for movers. That's a lot of beer and pizza.

Didn't say that the movers had to drive the truck. You can hire professional movers by the hour just to load/unload the truck...And most of the time, it is completely worth spending the money.

Used professional movers on my last move, and will never do a DIY move again. Furniture (including BIG stuff) out of old place and into new place 20 miles away, with not a scratch on walls or furniture, and all done before lunch. And absolutely everything had to go up at least one long, narrow flight of stairs and plenty had to go up yet another flight. Lesson learned - just wish it hadn't taken til 40+

I learned early (19 y.o.) when my soon-to-be-ex-roommates helped me move my upright piano up a steep incline between two Victorians to a rickety set of stairs of a four-unit mother-in-law apartment, and mine was the one farthest away. My friends got it up the rickety stairs, at which point things went sideways because there wasn’t enough clearance up the inside stairway because the living room jutted out over the stairway and made it impossible to get the piano up. I used professional piano movers thereafter until I finally stopped playing piano and turned to choral singing instead.

Time plus effort = money. It's a risk assessment issue. Is what you gain worth more than you can stand to lose? Every decision boils down to a practical risk assessment evaluation.

I just hired movers for the first move in my life. I hired supposedly the best. I have never broken anything in a move, and I have moved a lot. In this move, I’m sure I’m not to the end of broken things and damaged surfaces. . Next time I hire a crew and they load how I tell them.

Idk abt this one bc we just moved in and the movers are supposed to unpack for us as well but not only did they not unpack, they also just threw everything wherever. Like my Xbox was in my grounded brothers room, and they literally labeled a hamper full of clothes “bedding”. Like what?

…but if you do, make sure to do your research and pay for the insurance. We were in a bind and had to find a moving company quickly. As a rule, I had to be there the whole time they loaded up. I met the guys and saw how careful they were with our stuff so I felt confident in deciding to forego paying for the added insurance. What I didn’t know was that when you’re moving long distance, your stuff goes from that truck to storage and other trucks along the way. We had thousands of dollars of our belongings broken and stolen. They destroyed my grandma’s piano. (That was a whole emotional breakdown in itself) We had very little recourse because we denied the insurance. Lesson learned. Do your research and get the insurance.

Yup! Especially once you have kids…you can barely manage to pack in the weeks leading up to the move because the kids interfere. You cannot watch them and move furniture at the same time-you really can’t do anything else while watching them… it takes a lot longer to move all your heavy boxes and furniture and take multiple trips with the truck yourself. You are probably saving money by not damaging the furniture and having it done all in one day, rather than 3-4 days of truck rental and multiple trips and time off work.

At some point in your late 30's, your friends start having back problems and other ailments that prevent them from helping you move, so movers become necessary. Also, by then, you may have kids and your parents may have made you get all your childhood stuff out of their house, so the amount of stuff you have to move is way beyond a couple pickup truck loads.

NOT. We hired movers for an interstate move, and at the other end, anything for the bedroom just got tipped into a huge mound in the middle of the bedroom floor. Their excuse was they just needed to take the boxes back.

Depends. We hired a company called ‘Two Men and a Truck’ and only one guy turned up and he had a bad back. Husband had to help him and dropped a heavy solid metal radiator on his foot. That was 27 years ago and it’s never been right.

I have learned the hard way to hire people to clean the place when moving out. Last time my MIL absolutely insisted on doing the cleaning, and it ended up costing me so much money because the landlord said they had to hire a company to clean it for it to be acceptable. If I had hired a cleaning company to begin with, I could've chosen a cheaper one and would've had the right to blame them if they didn't do it properly. It was a tiny appartment and I was a pregnant working mom. Plus the appartment was well kept so I let MIL do the job since she insisted. I never smoked or even drilled a single hole in the wall. I felt totally ripped off by the landlord and so humiliated like it would've been a freaking drug house or something 😥

Yeah this is absolutely true. It does cost a bit so work that into your budget. The rationale here is you need to be healthy to function yourself and getting injured in the process hurts you more long term. Like throwing out your back for example. It may delay your plans a bit as you save up for it but if you're like me back in the day, I cannot afford to not work.

Not everything goes downhill as we age. Well, surely our close friends circle becomes smaller, hangovers get worse and more responsibilities fall on our shoulders. But a new body of research has shown that some of our brain abilities improve as we age.

For example, a 2011 study looking at data from more than 60,000 people found that our ability to recognize faces continued to improve as we age—until just after we hit age 30. "At almost any given age, most of us are getting better at some things and worse at others," lead study author and MIT department of brain and cognitive sciences researcher Joshua Hartshorne commented to Business Insider.

Does that mean that we get smarter with age? Well, it depends what we define as ‘smart,’ but some of our cognitive abilities do indeed improve as we age. However, some will deteriorate, like our ability to quickly process and recall information (also known as fluid intelligence), which peaks at about the age of 18. After its peak, those abilities continually fall over the rest of our lives.

But that doesn’t mean it’s bad news for us. There is another study suggesting that having a greater purpose in life can help protect against cognitive decline among older adults. In fact, greater purpose in life has been linked to reduced all-cause mortality and cardiovascular problems, increased longevity, maintenance of general physical functioning, reduced risk of stroke and reduced incidence of sleep disturbances.
