I went hiking down to the old Honokaa Sugar Mill Landing. This is what is left of the original landing. Back in the 1800’s they used a wire pulley to help get the sugar supplies from the cargo ships that were anchored in the ocean to shore. There is no harbor on this side of the island so this is how they had to do things back then.
Since there were no cars back then, they used to haul the suppose from Hilo which was 40 miles away by horse and cart. Once they got the wire pulley in place they also used the landing to bring the supplies into the landing.
It was amazing to be able to hike around this old site and realize that 100 plus years ago they were using the landing to sustain the folks on the north side of the island.
If you are into learning about the history of the Hawaiian Islands and the history of the Sugar Cane Mills then this is a great hike to go on and step back in time.

Original Sugar Mill Landing
What the original landing looked like. It was so interesting to be walking around where this landing once stood.

Looking at the ruins
A friend of mine checking out the old ruins. You can see the round hole in the right corner that looks like a chimney stack. It is rather deep.
Ruins at the old Sugar Mill Landing
This old ruin is very deep. There looks to be an old round chimney in the one corner.

Pillars
Pillers that were used probably to move the supplies around the landing. There are also some more pillars just like these ones tucked up in the Lauhala Tree.
