Folded and delivered newspapers to subscribers along a prescribed route. Collected monthly subscription rates. Kept record of accounts. Contacted and persuaded prospective subscribers along my route to establish new accounts.
2 *Los Angeles Times (Age 15)
Assembled various sections of the Sunday paper prior to home delivery. Stacked carts with appropriated amounts of newspapers for drivers.
3 Kentucky Fried Chicken (Age 16)
Prepared and cooked chicken and ribs using pressure cooker and deep fat fryer methods. Prepared mashed potatoes and Cole slaw. Scrubbed pots, floors and my work station.
4 Hudson Upholstery (Age 18)
Picked up and delivered furniture for the purpose of re-upholstering. Cut away all unwanted materials from furniture frames. Pulled tacks and staples from frames. Blind stitched throw pillows. Measured window casings for, and hung, draperies, curtains, shades. Installed traverse, café, expansion rods and tension bars. Cleaned all work stations.
5 Jerry Barber Golf Club Manufacturing Company (Age 19)
Adjusted loft and lie on new golf club irons to specific angles using a rubber mallet. Used a table sized protractor. Read work orders to determine numbers of various clubs to be formed.
6 Tony Sardo Auto Upholstery (Age19)
Picked up and delivered new and used cars for the purpose of re-upholstering. Removed car seats from vehicles. Removed worn materials from cars, trucks, and vans. This included the removal of vinyl tops as well as headliners.
7 Fred’s Truck Fuels (Ages 18 and 19)
Serviced semi trucks and automobiles by filling fuel tanks with diesel fuel or gasoline to level specified by customer. Observed crankcase, radiator and tires, adding necessary amounts of oil, water, and air as needed. Washed windshields, windows and mirrors. Sold new and replaced worn/damaged truck tires using pneumatic impact wrench and jacks, as well as large leverage bars. Weighed trucks and issued printed reports for Highway Patrol authorities possible later legal weight verifications. Sold and installed accessories. Collected cash, verified credit accounts and dial-a-checks. Worked third shift alone without any supervision required.
8 California Rotogravure/Cal(ifornia) West (Ages 19 and 21)
Jogged printed sheets of Sunday newspaper supplements and magazines from the end of a web printing press. Stacked numbered items onto pallets. Fastened metal bands around palleted, stacked loose materials using a strapping tool and clamps prior to shipment. Read and verified work orders to meet proper specifications.
9 Seawall Cafeteria (Age 20)
Station cook. Prepared and cooked various seafoods including, but not limited to, Red Snapper, Codfish, Halibut, Dover Sole, Cocktail Shrimp, Prawns and Blue Crab. This was using grilling, broiling, deep fat, and baking methods. Prepared and cooked seasoned stuffing, various daily vegetables and mashed potatoes. Also cleaned all work stations.
10 Winston-Delta Tire Company (Age 20)
Removed worn or damaged tires from automobiles and trucks. Installed new tires using an automatic tire machine and small prybars. Balanced wheels.
11 Perry’s Variety Store (Age 20)
Dust mopped and washed floors. Performed store security during the afterschool hours utilizing two-way mirrors. Kept track of lay-a-way merchandise. Stocked soda machine, removed and counted coins.
12 Seafood Grotto-Seafood Chateau (Age 20)
Line cook. Prepared and cooked a variety of sea foods including Salmon, Lobster, Halibut, Dover Sole, Razor Clams, Steamer Clams and Lobster, Scampi and Lobster sauté’ dishes. Methods utilized were grilling, broiling, sautéing, steaming, deep fat frying. Broiled ribeye and New York steaks. Wrapped and cooked baked potatoes. Prepared and set up 20+ item salad bar; dismantled same. Cooked 250-450+ meals per night. Cleaned work stations pertaining to cooking and prep areas of restaurant. Distributed tips collected to the waitstaff and dishwasher according to effort shown.
13 Star Drug Store (Age 21)
Washed dishes, cups, glasses, and utensils. Cleaned work stations. Served coffee. Then I stood around a lot with not a thing to do.
14 Pelican Island Bridge Maintenance Company (Age 21)
Worked on hanging scaffolds and walked 8″ beams 40+ feet in height to remove rust from a drawbridge prior to priming and painting. Used an industrial-sized hand held power grinder to remove rust and smooth surfaces for conformance to specifications.
15 Carrow’s Restaurant (Age 22)
Bussed tables, loaded and operated dishwasher. Stacked items at various stations. Cleaned work stations.
16 *All Saints Cathedral (Age 23)
Various odd jobs including running errands, installing plants and shrubs, raking leaves, mowing lawns, seasonal snow and ice removal. Also, removed ivy from 200+ year old brick cathedral face. Performed various janitorial duties including trash removal, dusting blinds, and wood polishing.
17 Carl Miller Lumberyard (Age 24)
Operated a propane forklift to transport various materials up to 25 ft lengths. Read and followed work orders per customer requests. Loaded customer vehicles. Unloaded materials from semi trucks and railroad boxcars. Delivered materials to proper sites in the yard. Operated an industrial-sized ripsaw to trim lumber, moulding, and plywood to work order specifications.
18 Noodles on Brady Restaurant (Age 25)
Washed pots, skillets, and utensils. Washed floors and counters.
19 Knickerbocker Hotel Pharmacy (Age 25)
Washed dishes, glasses, cups, and utensils. Cooked and prepared hamburgers. Made and served coffee.
20 Pete’s Blue Chip Restaurant (Age 26)
Prepared and cooked foods requiring short preparation times according to customer’s instructions.
21 *Grossman’s Hardware (Age 27)
Dismantled store by sections. These included the lumber, hardware, paint, houseware, and gardening sections.
22 *Salvation Army (Ages 27, 31, 32, 41)
Bell rang for the Christmas season to solicit contributions. Greeted people and opened doors to stores.
23 So. Calif. Comm. Floor Care Main. Co. (Age 26)
Dust mopped, washed, waxed, and buffed floors at K-Mart. Also worked on a floor stripping crew. Polished brass and chrome surfaces and doors.
24 Union Sugar Manufacturing Company Age 27)
Unloaded boxcars. Weighed, stripped, and cleaned sugar beets. Ran 40 pound beet samples through an industrial-sized, electric turbine extractor to liquify a sample of liquid pulp. Performed laboratory analysis to ascertain sugar content in beet samples. Also, worked in the ‘Blo-up lab’ dismantling, stripping, and flushing out 8′ filters. Monitored pressure controls for 12 units on a wall-sized monitoring station and reported dangerous pressure levels and various other smaller concerns.
25 *North Glendale United Methodist Church (Age 28)
Assisted in the maintenance of the grounds. Cut and edged lawns, planted grass seed, installed a rose garden with wrought iron trellis, installed a drip irrigation system, poured concrete walkway, ect…
26 Hasse Plastering/T.E.S.H. Inc. (Age 28)
Loaded new materials onto company dump trucks and delivered them to various work sites. Performed demolition duties to prepare sites for reconstruction. Loaded debris onto dump trucks and transported materials to landfill. Operated an industrial-sized jackhammer as well as drive both a 25ft or 40ft dump trucks on city streets, freeways, highways and mountain roads.
27 *Harry Hollingsworth Gardening (Ages 28-30)
Performed lawn maintenance, tree and bush pruning, installing sprinkler systems and timing stations, trimming hedges, etc…. Work was performed at private residences, businesses, condominiums and apartment complexes in the Northeast Los Angeles area and Glendale, Burbank and Moorpark also.
28 *Jim Reeds’ Gardening (Age 31)
Performed lawn maintenance and sprinkler/timer system installations, planted flowers and grass seed. Laid sod as well as seasonal clean-up work.
29 Almar Security (Age 33)
Monitored incoming Silent, Burglar, Panic, Fire, Perimeter and Medical alarm signals, including Gun Safes in the Greater Los Angeles area. Worked the Central Station alone, third shift, 5 and 6 nights a week fulltime with no direct supervision required. Handled over 7,000 subscriber accounts including Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Celebrity locations. Verified signals as either false or ‘actuals’. Notified many various city Police and Fire Departments in those situations that were pertinent to signals received for dispatching or canceling. Dispatched Private Patrol units to others when included. Utilized CCTV(closed circuit) monitors to determine violation of new car lot premises. Verified all zones violated and reported such to proper respondents. Read and recorded signal activity for possible later court testimonies. Verified and recorded various Company Employee’s entries, as well as prior authorized opening and closing times. Recorded all signal interpretations for morning presentation with findings. Recorded results of investigations and submitted reports to the director of the morning shift.
30 Glendale Family YMCA Ages (34 and 36)
Greeted and verified ID of incoming guests. Refused rooms to those who were documented as troublemakers or owed the YMCA money. Assigned rooms, issued keys and handled monies. Oriented guests and members to rules and regulations of establishment. Handled 5 line phone with 20+ transfer stations for both incoming and outgoing calls. Took and directed appropriately all messages. Handled inquiries pertinent to association policies. Registered members to camps and other programs such as Gymnastics, Daycare, Baseball, T-ball, etc. Refunded bed taxes and key deposits. Operated a computer, copy machine, fax machine. Vacuumed lobby, lounge, and office areas. Walked premise inside and out for security purposes. Kept record of rents paid/owed and rooms available. Worked front desk third shift alone without any direct supervision required.
