Chapter 1
The Travels
The bells around the school rang, signaling that this was the first day of summer. Kids poured out the door with notebooks ditched on the staircase, I searched around for Bart and Pedro. It was like swimming upstream trying to get to our meeting point. We met in room 505, also known as the black rooms(due to the loss of light labeled permanently damaged). We finally found each other after five eerie minutes in the darkness looking for our lamps. After that, we left the building in a matter of seconds, fueled by the energy of a possible adventure.
We sprinted to our street to get our clothes and left for the river bordering our neighborhood. Our parents bid us farewell, and we got our kayaks.
Now all of you are probably wondering “What the heck are these crazy kids going to do with 3 makeshift kayaks and a river!”Well, we are something you might call adventurers, but when we saved up for 3 kayaks we knew this was the best opportunity to explore the island 30 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The island is about 5 km in its perimeter and the waves can get huge, which makes this on a kayak a daredevil stunt. Our goal is to stay on that island all summer without needing to row back.
Kayaks, as you probably know are incredibly thin, and you need good balance to stay upright and not drown. Thats not usually easy on a regular lake but on the ocean with 3-foot waves, it’s crazy hard. We are bringing a map of our stopping places. Our first stop is the Tortula Islands which are 10 km off the coast which is all we will row in one day. Then we will stop and rest on the rich beaches of Pellegrino, and our last stop is the unnamed island, on which we will spend the summer.
We have only prepared our kayaks now and at 6:00 we will depart on our kayaks.
