People Are Sharing Terrible Work Experiences That They Wish Were Just Jokes (30 Tweets)
Who you work with is just as important as your actual job when it comes to performing well. After all, a supportive, nurturing environment that empowers you to do your best will yield very different results from a toxic atmosphere where you constantly feel anxious, undervalued, and unappreciated.
The Cleveland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America asked people to share their work stories from hell that they wish were jokes but, unfortunately, aren’t. Their thread on Twitter has shown the appalling work conditions and horrible managers some Americans have to deal with. You’ll find their stories below. Read on, upvote the stories that resonated the most with you, and share your own nightmare job experiences in the comment section at the very bottom of the article.
Dr. Vaneeta Sandhu, a workplace psychology expert and the head of emotional fitness at Coa, told Bored Panda what we can all do as managers and employees to be more self-aware of our flaws and fix them without triggering our inner defense mechanism. Read on for what she had to say.

According to Dr. Sandhu, it’s vital that we all understand that everyone can get defensive depending on the type of negative feedback we get related to our work.
“When the feedback threatens the way that we perceive ourselves, we naturally want to defend it. If you want to see yourself as a competent teammate and the negative feedback you received challenges this, it makes sense that you may feel yourself getting defensive!” she said, pointing out that if we want to criticize our bosses or employees, we need to do it diplomatically.
That's when you find out who your best friend REALLY is. If they won't help you hide a body, then they aren't your bestie.

Congrats! Hope you weren’t wearing a nice outfit though. Blood is hard to get out of nicer fabrics. Trust me.
“To help increase self-awareness in those around you, especially with the goal of being more receptive to feedback, role model your own practices of self-awareness. One way to role model your commitment to self-awareness is to ask for feedback from your colleagues. Asking questions like, ‘What is one way I show up as a supportive leader? What is one thing I can do more to support you?’ help model your commitment to growth,” the psychology expert explained to Bored Panda.
It would have been a lot to ask of any 15 year-old. Please forgive yourself.
WTH? It has no loud colors, no mismatching fabrics, no embellishments, nothing but subdued blues and white. I bet the guy was just an anti-masker.
Quite a few Americans are scared away by any mention of the word ‘socialism,’ and it’s no wonder, considering the US’ anti-socialist rhetoric during the Cold War. But socialism (especially democratic socialism) and communism are worlds apart.
The former is a legitimate way to structure and improve society and has achieved great success in some European countries while the latter is an evil ideology that has led to the deaths of around 100 million people. As anyone who’s ever opened up a history book will know, there’s a huge difference between the two.
I'm so glad we have worker's rights here and you're not allowed to be fired when sick.
Communism is what you want to stay away from and actively fight back against it. Socialism on the other hand? It’s what keeps your work environment safe, improves your job satisfaction, and generally ups your quality of life. And it doesn’t have to be a binary choice, either. Capitalism can work hand-in-hand with good working conditions, fair labor laws, and a safety net if you ever need it. However, that requires plenty of compromises on both sides. Companies and employees alike rarely want to meet in the middle.
Just look at them and go, "So what are you doing here then, its a job for men?"
At the end of the day, who do you want working for you? An exhausted employee who’s treated like a robot or somebody who’s brimming with energy, ideas, and wants to go the extra mile for you?
The Cleveland DSA is a local chapter organizing throughout the Ohio city’s metropolitan area. “At the root of our socialism is a profound commitment to democracy, as means and end. We are activists committed to democracy as not simply one of our political values but our means of restructuring society,” they explain their vision for local politics.
“Our vision is of a society in which people have a real voice in the choices and relationships that affect the entirety of our lives. We call this vision democratic socialism—a vision of a more free, democratic, and humane society.
as soon as I sliced the finger i would have left.plus who doesn't have a first aid kit in a kitchen?!
The DSA aims to increase the power of working people while reducing that of corporations. The organization hopes to decrease the influence of money in politics, empower ordinary people in their workplaces and the wider economy, and restructure the system fundamentally to improve people’s livelihoods.
"Since the 1990s concerns have been voiced about the health risks of laser printer emissions. Numerous studies have shown that the toner used in laser printers contains hazardous compounds such as metallic nanoparticles and carcinogenic substances which are emitted into ambient air during the printing process and can cause various health issues. The Harvard Center for Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicology published a review of 54 research studies, recognising that convincing scientific evidence exists of negative health effects such as cytotoxic oxidative stress, inflammations and respiratory ailments. Permanent exposure can lead to chronic diseases of the respiratory tract, the immune and cardiovascular system and other organs." [Source: European Parliament]
Part of what the DSA hopes to achieve is to promoted democracy in the workplace, strengthen publicly operated institutions, and work with politicians at all levels of government to increase the influence that your average Americans have.
Cowards. These people are cowards and a whole lot of other very bad words.
When I was a supply teacher in Canada, I still had to go in during blizzards even if the regular teachers couldn't/wouldn't... staff had to be available for any children who walked to school.

Reminds me of that quote "America is a third-world country wearing a gucci belt"
I was sexually harassed and sexually touched at a new job and when I reported it to HR, I was fired. I know that was the reason because on a Friday morning, my boss said I was doing really well and he was very happy with my work. That afternoon I went to HR to complain and when I got to work on Monday, my boss was visibly shaking with rage. He said I was being sacked because I apparently almost cost the company a one million pound law suit because I had lost a blood sample (it was a private pathology company). The problem being, my job at that particular company didn't involve me handling blood samples.
Nothing much to say except I'm sorry and I wish you the best. ❤️
Load More Replies...I guess most, if not all, of these are from the wonderful US of A again. People should stop complaining and fix their labor laws if they want worker's rights. Unionize, vote for people who want change, refuse to work yourself to the bone, etc. But no... they make work their lives and complain about all of it.
The problem is if you stop complaining people assume the problem has been addressed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. The average person cannot "fix their labor laws" and simply unionizing doesn't instantly solve all of the problems. In a family that lives paycheck to paycheck you don't have the option to not work yourself to the bone because if you don't your family goes hungry and you can't simply quit and find another job because there aren't other jobs available (at least not other jobs that don't have the exact same issues anyway). I'm not American, but I live in a country with a 32.5% unemployment rate (which is going to go up since we're not handling Covid well and more companies are going to fail). If I quit my job now, I will not get another one. So yes, I'm going to put up with crap I shouldn't put up with and "make work my life" because the alternative is losing my only source of income. That's reality. That's why people stay in crap jobs.
Load More Replies...I am so glad I live in a country that has employment and workplace laws that actually protect employees from unfair, unsafe and discriminatory workplace practices. Most of the examples above would lead to an employer facing a disciplinary, tribunal or even criminal prosecution in the UK.
I mean, same here. I think a lot of people just don't know their rights and employment suits can be tough to win and can ruin your reputation. But. Many of these examples are egregious and could win a lottttt of damages if people only followed through. It's too bad really.
Load More Replies...some people are so disgusting, mental health problems exist, emergencies outside of work exist, sickness exists, something that affects an employee at any job affects the job, sexual harassment exists, sexism exists, too much work also exists and caring about other living things (you and others) is the first step of being a human. some people can't grasp that and the world is such a broken place because of that.
One of my coworkers and me worked all alone in a small workshop once. It was composed of 2 buildings very close to each other. My desk was near the exit of one of these. Exit where my coworker decided to smoke, door open and not outside because he didn't "want to smoke under the rain, you know?". He knew full well that I have weak lungs and can't handle the smoke much, so I asked him to either go oustide and smoke or go in the second building (a few meters away from us). He bent to be eye level with me (and he was 2 heads taller), looked me in the eyes and just said "It's your problem, not mine. You want to get away from the smoke? Ask for a smoking aera? Be. My. Guest. It is NOT my problem." He's the only one who smoke and I'm always the one who has to clean the cigarette's remains (bonus smell of cold tobacco added)
Boss: (n.) a noun t describe a two faced coward who controls and manipulates harmless, innocent employees just to fill the gaping holes of their extra sensual dread.
Do you mean "existential dread"? And bosses in general are not there to be on the side of the employees, just as HR isn't. There are rules and regulations that companies are meant to follow and most just "toe the line" without yielding any further.

We don’t have a monopoly in the West. I had a boss once from Romania; before he came here, his plant manager would sometimes call him at 2 in the morning to make him to go the plant just because he could. Not because there was any problem.
Load More Replies...I had to work a 12 hour day the very day my dog died. At the end of the day, my boss complained that she had to go home and make mashed potatoes ( the next day was thanksgiving). I said I had to bury my dog using the headlights of my car for light. She said, “oh you win!” Same company never gave me the extra hours I earned from doing weekend trade shows. Then later stopped paying our health insurance but still took $$ from our paychecks. Then started to “hide” the paychecks, then started to bounce.
I worked a fast food restaurant in the kitchen. One day the district supervisor was there all day. I arrived for my shift, punched in, and went to my station. I hadn't been punched in for more than 5 minutes when I was written up for a sanitation violation: There were hash browns under the bagging area. Now, Breakfast ended at 11am. This was 5 pm. Why was I reprimanded for something I couldn't see that late at night while there was a full screen of orders I had to prepare. Why not reprimand the breakfast or lunch crew for not cleaning it up? This same supervisor refused to give me my quarterly raise because she said I cleaned too much. But two weeks later she fired the store manager and told me the cleaning had to follow corporate standards. (Needless to say I had not slacked off the cleaning after losing my raise because I refused to not do my job properly. I came back after a weekend off to find tallow stalactites and stalagmites hanging from the fryer station. SMH
I was sick with the flu and strep, had the doctors notes to prove it and was let go because I couldn't be there....oh I'm sorry I'm contagious and your building has no ventilation.....this is a HUGE bank company too....unreal
Several years ago I was at work about to give a presentation to one of our biggest clients. I told my boss (the CEO) that I might have to leave at a moment's notice due to my wife being very pregnant and could go into labor any minute. He looked me in the eye and told me that if I was a company man, I would stay. I was just about to tell him to go f**k himself when he started laughing. I was so close to getting myself fired that day.
A guy came into the bookstore where i worked. He had a bunch of gun magazines, and wanted a teacher's discount. Well... 1) we don't discount magazines at all, ever. 2) teacher's discount doesn't apply to things that cannot be used in the classroom, and our local schools were zero tolerance to the point of crazy/stupid. I didn't mention the second part, just said that I couldn't discount magazines. He went full ammosexual, freaked out about his constitutional rights, and demanded an apology and a discount to make it right. I told him I literally couldn't give him the discount; the registers blocked that sort of thing. He physically assaulted me: slamming his hand down on my wrist and pinning it to the counter while demanding an apology and the discount. All throughout his screaming fit, literally no one showed up to find out what was going on. Eventually, he stormed out in a rage. I was written up for "provoking" him to violence.
Had a mild heart attack while cooking in the hospital I worked at. As a patient my name was on the meals list sent to the kitchen. My boss tried to fire me for not showing up for my shift
I worked for a big video game selling company, and because we didn’t have a assistant manager (high turnover and the DM didn’t want to promote me), we had this store manager that was for better words, a jerk, working one morning with me. I was 6 months pregnant and chose to sit down on a chair with no customers in store because I was tired (I would walk to work, half mile from my home and stand for 8-10 hrs, then walk back). He got all bent out of shape, told me I was nothing but a number to the company and the reason why I couldn’t get promoted was because I was having a baby and it would “inconvenience” the store. I stared him dead in the eyes and called corporate on him. He still worked there months later. I didn’t go back until after Christmas rush (medical conditions kept me out longer than normal) and I got called multiple times while out (mostly of when are you returning? We need paperwork to support this extended time. Ok fine.) I left that job two months after coming back.
At a company get-together, the new big boss came and interupted me and my direct boss chatting, to go on a rant about how one of the consultants was taking the mick over expenses. I introduced myself as that consultant; he hadn't yet met me as I had been on-site 300 miles from home 5-6 days a week for the last 3 months. I pointed out that I had done my contractual onsite days for the year, and if he didn't like paying my expenses, then I would go home and wait for him to find me work I could do from there. I actually didn't mind the workload, I was in good accommodation in an interesting city, with my meals paid for. But I wasn't going to do it at my own expense.
My daughter just quit dunkin due to unsafe working conditions bc they told 2 people with covid they had to come into work after 4 days off bc being sick doesn't mean you don't work! Yes that is exactly what it means. This came after quitting wendys bc she was being too emotional when a make coworker smacked her butt. I waited tables in a nightclub and was attacked by a drunk customer who pushed me down 3 stairs and when i hit my head and passed out proceeded to kick me in the head repeatedly. They paid for my hospital bills and physical therapy but told me i needed to be careful not to upset the customers in the future.i asked if she wanted a drink for last call. I still suffer from that head injury. 8 years later. Sexual harassment stories....i got em by the dozens. Give people a little power and they forget how to be decent humans.
