We might be living in the middle of a global pandemic and some people might miss human contact a bit too much, but it’s no excuse to spout tasteless pickup lines. To give you a break from all the serious things in life, Bored Panda has collected a whole bunch of pickup attempts that are so awful, they deserved to be put down with snappy comebacks.
Scroll down and upvote your favorite shutdowns of failed pick up attempts on Tinder. If you’re up for it, let us know in the comments what the worst pick up line you’ve ever heard (or said!) was. Also, check out our earlier list about the most cringeworthy pick up lines people have had to deal with right here and be sure to visit the 2-million-follower-strong Tinder Nightmares IG account that's full of other horrible pick up attempts.
To learn more about why so many people seem to rely on sometimes lousy pick up lines on dating sites, Bored Panda reached out to Dan Bacon, founder of The Modern Man. According to him, men try to stand out from the crowd on dating apps in order to get responses, that’s why a lot of people rely on lousy pick up lines. Scroll down for our talk with Dan.

This is the first one that made me laugh out loud. Deserves to be up higher
According to Dan from The Modern Man, there are a few reasons why men might rely on bad pick up lines online.
- “Some men naturally try to stand out from the crowd, knowing that a woman is likely getting 100s of messages per day.
- Due to having so many women to contact, some men simply decide to roll the dice and test out different lines to see if something will work (i.e. get a response and an interested reaction).
- If a woman has 50 pending messages that basically have, ‘Hey’ or, ‘Hi, how are you?’ as the text in each of them, but then there is a funny, interesting or cheesy pick up line in the list, she's more likely to click on that for a laugh. That could then lead to a conversation, which could lead to more,” he explained.
Dan believes that guys really do need to try to stand out from the crowd in order to get responses, otherwise, their messages will get lost in the noise. Sending out a quick ‘hey’ really isn’t enough in 2020, in most online situations, unlike in real life.
“However, if a guy were to say, ‘Hey’ or, ‘Hi’ to a woman in person, it would work so much better because it's him and her, rather than him vs. 1,000s of guys trying to get her attention at once on an online dating site or app.”
However, that doesn’t mean that people have to use cheesy pick up lines on dating sites. They need to try to seem unique and interesting without using lines as crutches.
“He and the woman could have been a perfect match, gotten into a relationship, and stayed together for life. Yet, all of that won't ever have the chance to happen if he can't get her attention,” Dan pointed out that getting noticed is half the battle.
“So, anything that gets attention and a response is a good start with online dating and from there, it can be a more normal conversation with flirting added in to create a spark that leads to something more.”
It’s one thing to be deliberately cheesy (“Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I walk past you again?”) to break the ice. It’s another thing entirely to be sleazy. The first one might get you some awkward laughs while the second one will most likely end up with you looking like a complete fool and get your messages screenshotted and plastered online.
That’s a pretty pathetic “pick up line”, if you can even call it that.
Truly disgusting ,very rapey line. That was just ment to intimidate
I think he’s alluding to a different organ of his.... 😒
Load More Replies...He should offer his heart to someone who actually needs it. The donee isn't the only one who'd be grateful for that.
i would faint if anyone gave me their heart, also they would not be able to, because they already dead
Load More Replies...Listen...that line isn't gonna work on every woman; It's not even gonna work 99.99% of the time. BUT! The one time in 10,000 it DOES work? You just might find the sick freak of your dreams
that has got to be one of the most terrifying pick up lines i have ever seen
According to Lifehack, a large part of online dating has to do with using common sense. If you wouldn’t use an awful pick up line in real life, why use it online? (And if you would, well, it’s time to take some time off and do some thinking.)
Before you start sending random pick up lines left and right, actually take the time to read your potential partners’ profiles. Instead of trying to get their attention by being as sleazy and cheesy as you can, try to build an actual connection.
Give them a non-sexual compliment. Ask them about their hobbies. If you have any common interests, talk about those! Everyone likes to put their best foot forward and present a better version of themselves, but there’s something to be said for being genuine.
Online dating can be both a blessing and a curse. It depends on whom you ask. While some people find the love of their life with their first match, other people feel that Tinder and the culture of online dating can be toxic for your self-esteem and bad for your mental health.
The BBC writes that some people have experienced anxiety, body-confidence issues, and have had their expectations dashed after getting on online dating. So if you’re feeling particularly blue about yourself lately, it might be time to take a small break from dating apps and all of the bad pick up lines that come with them.
How is it, in this modern day and age, that people still think itxs acceptable to talk to a woman- or anyone- like that?
I never understood the whole “Daddy” sexy talk, I actually find it pretty creepy.
It's a line from Dwight from the Office, people. It's actually hilarious.
So this one dude came up to me and said do you like water if so then you like 80%of me. I'm a lesbian so that line didn't quite work!
Damn, most of these are pretty good comebacks, and a few gems of pickups.
Oh god it just reminds me of the 80's TV show 'Blind Date' with Cilla Black. I felt constantly repulsed by the weak and cheesy pick up lines, yet somehow mesmerized by the hammy and superficial contestants.
What we're forgetting is, some of these guys are not looking for the brightest and most loyal companion, they're looking for quick intercourse. It's like email scams, they're looking for the dumbest, easisest mark they can find. Even if the line only works with one of 20 women, that's already a huge 'return on investment'. A guy I know printed a stack of business cards with only his first name and his number, he was average looking but quite tall and sporty, so he just gave a card to random good-looking girls he saw on public transport on his way to work and back, only saying "sorry, I don't have time right now and this is probably not the place, but I think you look great and I'd be happy if you would give me a call, if you like." That guy never had time for his friends.... And don't kid yourselves, there are girls that are looking for exactly that, and also a lot of girls who are flatterd by the dumbest lines.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't tinder the one specifically for hooking up with people? And you can only get messages if you actively matched them? Why so many offended responses to people flirting or making moves?
Its like , if I smile back at a guy in a bar, I am just looking to see, if he turns out interesting , nice etc, there is absolutely no promise of sex, just a beginning curiosity, that dies the moment you show the disgusting sides of your self. What you consider flirting, many women feel nauseated and repulsed by.
Load More Replies...I truly do miss pre-internet days when pick up lines were delivered in person with hopeful confidence..not delivered in cyber hundreds. Accepting a line or rejecting in person, displayed a strength of character and respect to both parties. A better way it was, now a thing of the past.
Cool. I'll get some sulphur and we can turn it into a match stick.
Well, showing an initial interest is not at all equal to wanting sex, just an opening to find out more, so repulsive pickups get puked at. So, are you truly a person, who wants to have sex with any man you smile at or are you just a horny guy
