Visual artist and photographer Kittiya captures the alien beauty of Indonesia’s millennia-old marine lakes teaming with millions of jellyfish.
Thousands of years ago, the seabed was uplifted forming marine lakes completely cut off from the surrounding ocean. Over time, rain diluted the saltwater, providing a unique ecosystem for marine life to evolve. Without natural predators, jellyfish multiplied in their millions over generations and lost their stinging cells.
These dramatic underwater portraits reflect the aesthetic idealism of Renaissance paintings with the natural world.
