Bahamas Swimming Pigs Found Dead After Tourists Gave Them Alcohol
7 out of around 22 famous Bahamian swimming pigs were found dead after tourists reportedly fed them alcohol. One of the pig’s owners, Wayde Nixon, told The Nassau Guardian: “The pigs were given the wrong food… We had them pigs there almost 30 years, and never has this happened before.” He added: “Right now it’s blowing out of proportion with people, anybody, bringing food there… giving the pigs beer, rum, riding on top of them, all kinds of stuff.”
“The family of pigs, dubbed ‘adorable’ by tourists, locals and media alike, have become incredibly popular,” says The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism website. “They live freely on the sandy beaches… The pigs, though feral, are exceptionally friendly,” it continues, “running from under the shade of the almond trees to greet visitors that bring them treats.”
However, after the recent incident, some regulations will have to be introduced. V Alfred Gray, the country’s Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, said from now on “people will be able to take photographs and see the pigs swim… but they will not be able to feed them things.”

I've leaves there for 8 years of my life. The pigs were fun to visit and hilarious to feed. It's heartbreaking people do this. It terrible.

And once more it needs regulations because some people are just stupid c*nts. this obsession with feeding animals whatever you have on hand is INSANE! People killed a pony in a local park, here. there's a sing about it and STILL people especially parents with small children - feed the damn ponies. Just get a pet, goddammit. then you can feed to your harts desire.

It's heartbreaking to hear that these lovely animals are being hurt and/or killed because of ignorant people who are too stupid to fathom that giving wild animals that live near water alcohol of all things would be a terrible idea and almost certainly result in some kind of negative consequences

According to a clarifying article by National Geographic (link: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/03/swimming-pigs-bahamas-death/), a Humane Society inspector has found the pigs ingested sand, not alcohol, and that a combination of factors led to the pigs' death.

And actually even that may not be true. Nat Geo did not do their homework. They took one report submitted by the govt (not to be trusted!). There has been some bad pig feed around since the hurricane last fall. There is also speculation that they may have had that also. Not sure but the entire truth may not have been told.

Nooooo :( These pigs are one of my favourite things in the world. Every time I'm down because of stress and the cold and dark Finnish winter, I look pictures of these pigs swimming and they make me feel happy. Now I kind of feel bad for wanting to travel there to see them :/

I will never understand why people would give any animal alcohol. Just because you're a binge drinking drunk idiot doesn't mean everyone and everything else around you should be too. This is hopefully considered animal abuse (I know it is) and the people who do and continue to do this, are justifiably held accountable.

That's so sad! Those pigs are adorably cute and I want to go to that beach! I normally hate beaches but the water there looks so clean and, come of guys, there's piggies to play with!!

My best guess is that it was the quantity of alcohol given them. It was sweet tasting and they sucked it up. Then they got drunk and decided to take a swim, and drowned. What a shame.
