Propaganda Postcards From The Early 20th Century Show The Dangers Of Women’s Rights
These unbelievable vintage postcards from the early 1900s were used as propaganda by men to stop women from having more rights. Although The Suffragettes campaigned tirelessly to change the status quo of the day, many men found the idea of women’s rights not only disagreeable but even downright dangerous.
Because of this, propaganda postcards like the ones below were produced. They come from the archive of Catherine H. Palczewski, a professor of women’s and gender studies at the University of Northern Iowa who’s been collecting them for the last 15 years. The postcards portrayed the idea of change as something to be feared, not embraced, and they promoted women’s rights as an attack against family values as well as an infringement upon man’s place in society. While we still have a long way to go before women have the same rights as men, these postcards serve as a reminder of how far we’ve come since the turn of the 20th Century. (h/t: vintage everyday)
I'm so grateful for all the courageous women who stood up against this cruel propaganda and helped us get the vote.
Yeah Lino Pugliari, they thought things were going to extremes back then, too

I was kinda laughing the whole time, like yeah, we're somewhere else, we've moved massively. But the "get back in the kitchen" and "make me a sandwich" pics that flow on the internet are still painfully common.
Load More Replies...I am the daughter of a single dad, and the pictures that show fathers taking care of their children as wrong make me sad because my dad has worked really hard in parenting and has done a great job. <3 I hate how women in these posters are shown as only fit for housework and not worthy of any say in our society.
the men look really desperate taking care or children and home ha ha imagine how women felt when they didn't have the choice
I know! They're admitting those roles can be very hard and unpleasant!
Load More Replies...Being able to vote is a privilege that our grandmothers fought very hard for. And it's one that many women in the world still don't have (much less any say whatsoever about their bodies or their lives) It is up to us, now, to make sure women are also being taken seriously. Looking at the media and the world around me there is still a hell of a long way to go.
Exactly! And if the Republicans get their way, we'll lose a great deal of our freedoms.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately a common response to feminists still is, that they just need to get laid. Just like many of these old postcards!
Wish I could time travel...in a tank...and just hunt these a******s down
Right!!!? Wearing some skinny jeans, rainbow hair, men oxfords,... Haha
Load More Replies...I can't believe how stupid those people were. They aren't much different than people against gay marriage today, though.
There's always those people who can never understand change
Load More Replies...Nowadays these drawings seem outrageous. Just think how many of today's matters of course will seem outrageous in 100 years. Denying climate change? Overburden resource usage? Locking out refugees? Brexit? Animal cruelty? Homophobia? You could endlessly add items to the lists of things that are either morally wrong or ignore the facts but just seem to feel right for many.
not so long ago.we still Get harrassed when we speak out loud!!the battle continues ????????thank you all courageous People for making it possible for women to vote⭐️
I can see all the stereotypes! They are better hidden, but now women who speak out are feminazis, masculine, loud, not wanted and frigid.... it's still AS disgusting!! There is a loooong way still to go!!
And if one just compares the way people write about the death threats against Anita Sarkeesian (and others) one sees that nothing has changed. They mostly boil down to "I totally support free speech but you know she wouldn't be getting death threats if she'd just be quiet". It's exactly the same idea that you see in those horrible images above of women with their mouths stuck in vices or sealed with metal screws. It's been over a century and we've barely grown up at all.
It's surprising how much of a kick you get out of doing things yourself. I've fitted electrical sockets, fixed a leaking toilet and recently replaced a breaklight bulb on my car. I think if we all played the gender card a little less and made the effort to figure it out ourselves, men would have less of a chance to feel quite so superior to women!
"I want to vote but my wife won't let me" BUT THAT'S EXACTLY HOW THE WOMEN FELT YOU F*****G UGHHJIHGKJ
in a way it is immoral to judge, from an evolved society 90+ years later, what people thought so long ago. Reality was a bit different. Think for example of all the work hours people had to work, and not enough kindergartens, diseases, etc. Nice to know where we are, let's keep it improving.
Thanks for posting. I hadn't realized opposition to women's voting was so virulent.
Funny how many of them came to be true, book about "How to take care of children" and career mom/house maker dad included. Heh :)
~ On women's rights > EVERY woman is beautiful . . . it just takes the 'right' man to see it
I think the basic idea is that women actually have value regardless of beauty and independent from the male perspective.
Load More Replies...They are a little contradictory aren't they? Some are saying that they became suffragettets because they never married or loved or kissed....and the other portion is showing their husbands....(complaining btw over how hard and degrading it is to be a woman)...
And still, to this day, a LOT of men think that women's rights means we want MORE. We just want to be equals. This proves that men have always felt like if they lose any control, they will lose ALL control.
It was an early manifestation of the fear-mongering we still see about change. "If it's different, it's gotta be bad for all of us. Maintain the status quo."
"Pet" used to be a term of endearment, like we say "baby" now.
Load More Replies...Same prejudices as ever. Sadly nothing has changed since then: a well sexy married/ f****d woman will not require rights, equal salary, freedom ...yeah we only live for man, there is nothing more important....
Yes, women do not have the same rights as men yet, but we can vote! We can go out and get a f*****g job even if the pay if less)!
Load More Replies...I found them no different than political ads now. Most of these a funny, more so when we know the outcome :).
I agree. I hear the same political message being bellowed.
Load More Replies...Josta Loos correct, some of this is true, they went about it the wrong way tho.
Ohhhhh this grinds my gears. So thankful for the women that stood up for us so that we have rights today!
These men can collectively go and f**k themselves. Their contempt and resentment being soooo threathened didn't pay off. And they are where the dinosaurs are now ;-D
I almost cried when I read these. I'm happy to be growing up nowadays
We've come a long way, babes... and still have a long way to go... I found some of these pictures truly nauseating and not funny at all, except I suppose for the men who shared them. The general idea of a suffragette being a hateful, never really loved girl or woman and taking it out on all men, starting with hubby (wonder how she caught that one!), is revolting.
i'm sorry men treated their women with such disdain. it is reversed with the men having to suffer. the women today have as a whole lost touch with their feminine side. those posters are funny yes, but in reality its propangada to have us divided as a country. Its easier to sway one side than to please everyone. also keep in mind how much more income tax would be if both sexes worked. ALCU later i say. woman wouldnt you prefer to be at home? especially mothers. its something to think of about.
No, some of us actually want to go out and do stuff. I actually quite dislike cooking, cleaning and gardening. I don't like taking care of children, but I mastered 9th-grade math when I was 11 and made a science experiment on genomes and DNA at 9. We don't really prefer to be at home.
Load More Replies...Some are Truth seekers like you. Who want to see the world in perfect balance. Women like you I love. Because we men are known for being the offender, the aggressive one. So it's easy for a woman to get away with murder. We need to understand our difference and educate each other on our roles and biological build up as humans. Feminism need to go. And us men need to trust women again.
