I Wore Outfits From The Same 12 Items For A Whole Month As A Manifestation Against Consumerism
Working as a stylist for 15 years already, I heard the famous saying ‘you only wear 30% of your wardrobe’ probably a thousand times. We all have our own wardrobe staples that we constantly wear – and it’s not always the most basic things. You can often see me casually rocking my glitter T-Shirt or a tulle skirt. Nevertheless, when I am not in my ‘diva fashion’ moments, I still have ‘nothing-to-wear’ headaches in the morning.
That’s why I decided to take on a challenge to prove that ‘wearing 30% of our wardrobe’ is not a hox. I selected 12 items from my wardrobe to see if I could survive 30 days by mixing and matching items to create distinctive looks for every day. And, of course, I kept a visual diary of the process.

These were the 12 items I picked from my wardrobe to wear for a month
Day 1: Silver shoes, jeans, turtleneck and a leather jacket
Day 2: Jumped into new shoes and the outfit already feels different!
Day 3: Little black dress, the same turtleneck and black high heels today
Day 4: Leather jacket and a jumper, styled with jeans & black heels
Day 5: Sequins! Leather jacket, sequin T-Shirt paired with mini skirt and sparkly shoes
Day 6: Wearing long shirt, leather jacket, jeans with black open-toe heels
Day 7: Yes, just a little black dress with black open-toe heels
Day 8: Morning outfit from turtleneck jumper, mini skirt and open-toe heels
Day 9: Little black dress, leather jacket and sparkling shoes for my cool look
Day 10: Turtleneck and leather jacket, paired with mini skirt and black high-heels for a semi-casual look
Day 11: Jumper, mini skirt and glitter shoes
Day 12: Pleated skirt with a black dress (worn as a top) and open-toe heels
Day 13: Challenging myself with white shirt, pleated skirt and black high heels
Day 14: Pleated skirt looks so good with a striped turtleneck!
Day 15: Classy combination: white shirt + jeans
Day 16: Sequin T-Shirt under a shirt, paired with a pleated skirt
Day 17: White shirt with mini skirt and open-toe high heels
Day 18: Feeling glamorous wearing sequin T-Shirt and a mini skirt, paired with shiny shoes
Day 19: I paired sequin T-Shirt with jeans
Day 20: Little black dress, my statement jumper and shiny heels
Day 21: You can easily turn your little black dress into a top
Day 22: White shirt, mint skirt and high heels
Day 23: Simply jumped into a pair of glitter shoes
Day 24: Mint skirt, striped turtleneck and glitter shoes for today
Day 25: Opted for a jumper, white shirt, pleated skirt and shiny heels
Day 26: Multi-colour pleated skirt paired with a jumper and shiny heels
Day 27: White shirt underneath my jumper, paired with jeans and black heels
Day 28: Black dress underneath a jumper, paired with black heels
Day 29: Enjoying myself in a jumper and jeans
Day 30: Wrapping up the month in a pleated skirt, jumper, leather jacket and open-toe heels
I hope that my visual diary helped you realize that having ideas of what to wear isn’t about having thousands of items in your wardrobe. It’s really about getting smart which item goes well with the things you already own. And that’s something you need to consider when you go shopping next time. Stop splashing large sums of money on clothing that you will only wear once. Plus, taking a healthy and sustainable approach when it comes to fashion is not a bad thing, right?
I changed my tops and kept the green tulle skirt to create versatile looks
I realized that this tulle skirt looks well with bolder jumpers and statement shirts
One statement jumper allowed me to style multiple bold looks
Little black dress is so versatile
Why on earth didn’t I wear my pleated skirt more often? It’s totally a life-saver!
Oh, loved my tomboy looks with a white shirt!
My sequin T-Shirt helped me put together playful outfits
For my model-off-duty looks, I looked no further than my leather jacket
Totally in love with my monochrome looks!
When you’re about to go out, a mini skirt is definitely a staple!

Share on FacebookDay 1: Ruined that outfit with those ...shoes. Day 5: Looks like you took some styling tips from a 5 year old girl. Days 3 & 8: Essentially the same outfit Days 6 & 15: should've stuck with the peep-toe booties (I really hate these glittery things on your feet) Day 14: Pleated skirt *does not look good* with that striped turtleneck. Day 16: What in the actual F*CK are you wearing? Day 18: "Oh, throw on the jacket and they'll be convinced you're wearing a totally different outfit!" Day 20: ...When you want to go to the country club and the night club at the same time so you dress for both. Day 26: Looks fine - until I see those shoes again. Ruined. All of these stupidly posed photos were taken in the same day, and this is really poor advertisement for your styling services. And what kind of stylist doesn't have a cute a*s pair of sneakers in that supposed 30% of their wardrobe? Cute sneakers are a must-have. 1 MILLION EYE ROLLS AT THIS POST.
First, the ripped jeans... no those didn't work, ever, at any level. Second, there's nothing special about having a limited wardrobe, that's how most of us live... the OPs usual wardrobe is what's abnormal.
The most stunning woman I ever saw spent $0 on clothes. I saw her in a takeout restaurant with two male co-workers. They were road workers, wearing orange jumpsuits. She was a very tall and slender African-American woman, not a classic beauty, but so confident in the way she carried herself. She wore a flower print scarf tied in a turban style, and big gold hoop earrings that look like two ram's heads. She was rocking that jumpsuit and could have stepped out of the pages of Vogue magazine.
1."Create distinctive looks each day" .. some of these outfits were really similar? Like day #3 to day #8 she just changed her skirt to a slightly different one. (and on day 10 she just added a jacket to day 8) 2. a lot of these outfits just look random at best in my opinion. I know she may of thought they were cute but looks like day 16? not for me :/ 3. A lot of people have a limited wardrobe. I know this has already been said (a lot lol) but its not that special to be limited to only 12 items. I know the whole point is to show how creative you can be and shouldn't have those "Idk what to wear headaches" but it came off as more "im challenging myself to use only 12 pieces of my huge wardrobe!" to me i guess.. 4. did you see how much grapefruit she was holding in that one picture?? 5. this WHOLE THING IS AN AD FOR A STYLING FIRM! Of course all that was said in this comment were my thoughts and you can totally disagree. I hate being this negative but i wanted to share my thoughts :)
I'm a student and don't care about appearances, it really isn't that hard to do this
I remember my gym teacher one year went all of october having to wear something pink,,without rewearing. The students got to guess how long she would last. She lasted all month..!
Those heavy, clunky-azz shoes ruin every outfit. They weigh her down horribly.
not impressed. 1. a jumper? You must mean that mundane sweatshirt she keeps referring to as a jumper. 2. HALF of these outfits, people wouldn't wear UNLESS they're poor like me and Saint Victoria. 3. Possibly just me, but I do not see her as a stylidt with her taste in clothes.
Jeeze she sure like grapefruit but drinks orange juice and wow 3 honking croissants!
But imagine just your average woman wearing that plaid pleated skirt with a black and white stripes turtle neck....nope.
I've seen this done in the past. Many of these looks were fine, but the ones with the green pleated skirt? Yikes. And no accessories, scarves, great jewelry? No thank you.
I remember my gym teacher one year went all of october having to wear something pink,,without rewearing. The students got to guess how long she would last. She did 30 days, even though hilariously, the 29th day, she taped a piece of pink yarn to her shirt, lol.
Of course its entirely possible to wear only 12 items in a month. Whats tricky n impressive is getting away with it unnoticed. But obviously she only wore those clothes just for the shots. And some outfits she just changed the shoes or threw on the jacket - I'm sure people are gonna notice if u wore the same damn striped turtleneck 3 days in a row. -_-
I like this. Once I got past the obvious "wearing only heels for an entire month?!" reaction, it became clear that you really were able to get creative with mixing and matching your pieces, and coloring outside the lines. What really surprised me was how methodical you were, but I realize it was easier to keep track of the changes you made, and how the variations affected your overall look that day. Even though this information isn't new or earth-shattering, it does illustrate that we can make better use of what we already own, and have some fun with it!
Shirt, socks and jeans I win with only 3 things, but I would smell wearing the same thing for a month
Haters gonna hate anyway. Despite the fact we like her style or not, I think this is a great idea and she looks good. Period. Now go and enjoy down-voting my comment.
Well it is a good idea and people might have opinions about the looks but tbh she just wants attention. This is an ad...
