Suddenly the car in front of me pulled out and I realised that we were all waiting behind a legally parked car. I pulled out, and saw in my rear vision mirror, all those behind me following my example.

In my area they have a sign before the bridge which pretty much says the height of the bridge or something like “If you hit this sign then you will hit the bridge”

how big is that rig ? the 15'0" on the sign either it is not accurate or this is a build up of asphalt it happens due to low bids to get the contract from the city it's always cheaper to fill than do a complete regrade of the road surface AND yes you can get by doing that for a couple yrs but IF no contract bid takes into consideration how long it's been between a complete strip it down and regrade and (relevel and drainage) then the build up shortens all posted bridge height markings. Most Semi/tractor trailers/ (Lorry) in the US are 13'.6" to 14" in height so if a Driver sees 15" 0" on a posted sign he would assume he was going to fit unless there was a caution notice from his dispatch directions ... Here in the US we are regularly warned about certain locations that are noted for bridges / overpasses being misleading Sorry Chicago IL it means you. As a driver you can NEVER assume the sign is correct always verify with Hwy Departments (kinda like Diggers Hotline) check be safe
