Starting a new Youtube series about artists I love and respect and whom I’ve found online. Louisiana painters Michael Ray Charles & my FB friend Leonard Maiden are two extraordinary artists whose work I’m excited to share.

Studio 120 #234

The latest video from my Youtube vlog Studio 120. This is the 2nd vid in series I’ve started about artists I’ve found online and love- a video portrait of the painter Leonard Maiden.

His style of painting, his brilliant use of color, the sharp lights against deep shadowy shapes – this is the man I turn to when I get stuck, when I need clarity in painting an image. I get lost in his work. The colors lull me in but then my mind starts turning while I try to understand the layers of a culture so far away from my experience. What exactly is he saying to me and the wider world – what does he want us to comprehend and feel?

This particular painting sold a few years ago but it’s one of my favorites. Maiden’s work is available thru E & S Gallery, Louisville KY (502) 568-2005 and Stella Jones Gallery, New Orleans LA (504) 568-9050

I get so lost in his work -the ideas, his soft, subtle colors presented with images that are the blood and bones of the black experience in America. To connect wih Maiden visit his FB page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=288942787819441&ref=br_rs
