35 Ironic Comics Highlighting Modern-Day Issues By This Belgian Artist
Interview With ArtistThis Belgian artist illustrates controversial modern-day issues that not everyone might find funny. But we, along with his 154K followers, enjoy Domien's artwork, and since this is not our first post on Bored Panda, we are sure you will find a chuckle in yourself when going over these as well.
While scrolling through these illustrations, you will notice their distinctive style. In a previous interview, Domien shared what has influenced his artwork: "I have always been an enormous pop-art lover since I was a child, so a lot of my style has been influenced by pop artists from the '60s and '70s. John Wesley, an American painter, is probably one of my biggest examples. He has a way of making rather explicit drawings in a way that makes them look innocent and kind. Alex Katz is also a major influence, in my opinion, he is the king of composition, making strange and awesome colorful settings that I can stare at for hours. When it comes to the cartoon part of what I do, Belgian cartoonist Jeroom is probably my biggest influence. He gets away with a lot of rude and controversial stuff just because he is so damn funny."

Bored Panda reached out to Domien to ask a few questions about him and his comics, to which he kindly responded.
Domien is a funny guy, so we wanted to know how he strikes a balance between humor and delivering more serious messages. He shared: “I try to do both, but I consider myself a cartoonist first and an activist second. Meaning, I want to spread a message but also want the cartoons to be good and funny. It's not an angry, protest page but a positive one.”
Though Domien wrote that he is a cartoonist first, we do love that he is not afraid to spread and highlight important issues such as gender stereotypes, toxic masculinity, feminine issues, modern dating, social media, and many more.
We asked Domien to elaborate on the role of humor in conveying important messages to a wide audience and fighting against censorship. He shared: “I think using humor and bright colors (mostly pink and blue) are interesting weapons to cover a message. I always try to make my comics short and easy to understand so people get the message immediately when they see it. Because it's fast and easy, people hit the 'like' button more easily, so the message gets spread to a wider audience.”
Ok I will confess: I like to read gay romance novels (m+m), I'm a hetero woman. Hetero men like to watch two women together, so why shouldn't I imagine two hot guys getting intimate 😆
Parents to kid "It's time we told you you're adopted.... your new parents will be here shortly"
Coming back to more current events, we asked if there are any that inspired Domien’s recent satirical illustrations. He answered: “I think as an illustrator, you can't ignore AI and what it's doing to our society. I'm both super thrilled about the possibilities but also scared of the impact on our society. It's an interesting subject to make jokes about because everyone is talking about it and has a strong opinion about it.”
Friendly reminder than condoms are only about 98% effective *before* user error, so while condoms are definitely a great, convenient, simple method of contraception and this guy should have no problem wearing one, if you plan on having sex with someone who seems like as much of an idiot as the guy shown in the comic, it might be good to have that extra precaution because I'm guessing his offspring would also be aśsholes.. :)
Birth control pills don't prevent STDs. Unless you know the person you're going to have sex with really, really, really well, use a condom. Hint: if you don't feel comfortable enough with that person to discuss their sexual history and STDs, you shouldn't be having unprotected sex with them.
This. Condoms are not just for birth control but also for STI.
Load More Replies...I remember when condoms were a normal thing, since unlike birth control pill, they can prevent the transmissions of std's.
Dude, just wear a condom. You have no idea what the other person could have or be hiding from you. I would say just DONT have sex unless you know the person inside and out, but that's not going to happen for everyone, so just protect yourself and others. Also, from a medical standpoint, HPV can lie dormant for YEARS and it causes cancer. I know first hand. I had stage one cervical cancer from the guy I lost my virginity to. It was devastating to hear I may never have kids or that I may need chemo on top of them taking a large portion of my cervix out. All this at 19 yrs old. Please, just use condoms and be safe out there!
I'm sorry that happened to you, I've had part of my cervix removed too. And to think if the HPV vaccine had been around when I was a kid then I would've been protected from that. Anyone reading this please vaccinate your kids for HPV, when they're very young. You can save them from cervical cancer
Load More Replies...FYI Professor Sujoy Kumar Guha developed RISUG over 20 YEARS ago. It is a SINGLE injection for a men(s*****m havers). It is a 99% effective non surgical injection and reversible birth control with NO SIDE EFFECTS. Attempts to get it on the market have have failed repeatedly due to 1. It being for MALE use instead of targeted towards females. 2. It being an effective one time inexpensive procedure(meaning the drug companies would lose massive profits). Think... just THINK of all of the unwanted children that have been born, abandoned, abused, and no longer alive. All of the partners that have been trapped in abusive relationships. All of the people who have died of cancer due to birth control and other contraceptives. Every pharmaceutical company should be held responsible. But it can not happen while they continue to bury the truth. It was easy for them to do 20 years ago, 10 years ago... but now... Pandas... we have social media. Spread. The. Word. 😤
If you're not gonna sack it, go home and whack it. No glove, no love.
Guys never got that when I was young, either. A condom??!! Oh no, it doesn't "feel right." It was like they all thought birth control was someone else's job. Condoms weren't foolproof in the 60s, either. So that was when I made a conscious decision to make birth control my responsibility. Mine alone. I never regretted it. I always knew I was in control of my own future. That empowered me.
I take birth control because my menstruations are killer otherwise. I get bad bloating, debilitating cramps, so much blood loss, and it lasts 3 weeks. It's on 3 weeks, off 3 weeks. And since it greatly reduces some women's immune system, I always get sick from it. So I'm on birth control, not caring that my libido is dead and that I've gained weight simply to not deal with that s**t anymore. Other women, however, don't want to or can't. It's just be understanding of others. Some women can't afford it, and condoms are f*****g free if you go to colleges and such to get them. Discuss it, then figure out a plan, even if that means not having any naughty times.
Go to a gynecologist, it's not normal to have pain . Some little cramping yes , pain no . Birth control just hide the symptoms don't play with your health
Load More Replies...Not so funny story: Guy I was with years ago had had a vasectomy, was clean and didn't want to wear a condom. I'm also clean and was on the pill so I agreed. Now, I'm on a progesterone only pill which can sometimes cause you to not get a period at all (unlike with the combi bill which you take a week's break or a week of sugar pills) which I had told him about. Who freaked out when I hadn't gotten my period several weeks later and insisted that I get a pregnancy test? Not me Told him if he was that freaked out he could buy the test, which he wouldn't do
I like to be in control of staying kid free, I'm responsible enough to take a pill everyday and there are so many other unpreventable health risks in life what's does it really matter? Just because you don't smoke due to health risks doesn't mean you won't get lung cancer.
Yeah, but hormonal birth control really has severe side effects. For me it was depression, a common, but not widely known side effect
Load More Replies...We were also wondering how Domien navigates the potential challenges or controversies that may arise from addressing sensitive or taboo subjects through his art. He replied: “I try not to think too much about consequences. Mostly I just spread my own view and opinion about certain subjects, and I don't really care if other people agree. However, reading reactions from others on topics like feminism, gay and trans rights encourages me to keep fighting harder, as they show there is still a long way to go.”
And lastly, he added: “Be kind to everyone, floss, never wear socks in your sandals, and use sunscreen when going out during summer.”
I love Halle Bailey as Ariel, i just wish her hair would have been redder. I have red hair, and when i was little, i loved Ariel because she had the same hair as me! Even when kids called me carrot head (they really did!) I remembered that a princess had my hair!
Spiders don't have that many options, do they? Maybe webmaster would be another one
The only way to make the right panel not creepy anymore is to start breastfeeding kids everywhere. Every mother should (attempt) to breastfeed their children and shouldn't be ashamed to do it in public
I will never get why people attribute character traits to some random assortment of stars that are millions of lightyears away -also from each other- some of them long dead. But that might be the Scorpio speaking
I wish a had gay parents, it would have made my journey to accepting myself so much easier, and maybe then they'd actually kind of understand me. But I can't change who I have so I will make the most of it and hopefully be the gay parent for someone else. :)
Note to self: All humans are equally filled with tasty, valuable organs!
Glad my mom was neither of the two. She even got me condoms as a teen and told me if I get pregnant we'll find a way. She always said she'd like grandchildren, but never pressured me.
As someone who dispises house work with a burning passion...THE HOUSE IS SHARED THE WORK IS SHARED!!
Ah come on, you're all doomsayers. We'll only be extinct in about 50 years
And then he punches her in the face. "Sorry, you had a bug on your arm "
I like my men shaved... I know it's natural and all that but hairy apes freak me out
