Guy Insults Canada, But This Girl Defends It With Some Truth Bombs That Get Over 1M Likes And Retweets
Canada is awesome. I know it. You know it. But one internet user obviously didn’t because he started insulting it. Twitter user fredsonora called Canadians moose-fornicators and even insulted their ham and curling! Those were some very low blows.
Luckily, Twitter user Sharlene, who goes by the moniker sfergs_, was there to step in to defend Canada. And she did this by explaining why it is one of the best countries in the world. The spat on Twitter occurred after Sharlene exclaimed that she was incredibly glad that her parents emigrated to Canada instead of the United States; fredsonora didn’t like that one bit, so he proceeded to verbally attack Canada.
Now, before proceeding any further, I’d like to say that I like Canada and the United States equally: I appreciate the former’s well-mannered people and stunning frigid landscape, and the latter’s passion for innovation and incredible national parks. Both countries have their pros and cons. However, emotions can get a bit heated where nationalities are concerned, and this ‘feud’ on Twitter is a perfect example of this.

Sharlene was on the warpath when she listed what she thinks are the reasons Canada is ‘better’ than the US. The Twitter user highlighted that one of the biggest positives the country has is free healthcare which she contrasted with the situation in the US.

However, the woman mentioned that Canada is far from perfect and she noted that her goal wasn’t to make Americans feel bad. Sharlene’s thread was wildly successful, getting more than 831,000 likes and being retweeted over 185,000 times.
Naturally, Canada is well known for its moose, ham, and curling, but that’s not all. The Top Tens writes that Canada is best known for several other things, chief among them being maple syrup, the Niagara Falls, and the tendency for Canadians to use the word ‘eh?’
Canada is also known as one of the safest countries in the world and the second-largest country in the world by area. And what is that area populated by? Incredibly friendly folks who are amazing at curling.

Medical care is not technically free. Nothing is free. Where does she think the money is coming from, thin air? It's called taxes and Canadians are taxed at a much higher rate than Americans...I have to agree about medication though. It really shouldnt be so expensive

Europeans are also taxed at higher rates. When my parents sat down with mom's American cousins to compare what they got for their money, the American relatives turned from outrage at the thought of my parents being allowed to keep so little of the earnings to disbelief at how it was possible that so much was covered. Healthcare in the USA is more expensive than anywhere else in the world. To me, it means that some sectors in America reap oversized profits, and that a lot of people are ruined financially or even die before their time because of it. I honestly do not understand why Americans accept this.

Serious faults of Canada: Prime Minister who doesn't know his a*s from a hole in the ground (broken/unfulfilled electoral promises, lack of transparency, Liberal Party dissension, cultural appropriation...); Open door immigration policy (which is causing a widespread loss of Canadian identity); Public Healthcare ("free" healthcare does not exist - we pay for it with higher taxes. Often times those who require life saving surgeries/treatments are left waiting for months or years due to overcrowding at hospitals, lack of medical professionals, etc.); Electoral system - our method of indirect voting is ineffective. We are essentially required to vote for our local Member of Parliament in order to elect a new Prime Minister (but what if you can't stand your local MLA? Tough s**t.); CENSORSHIP - Under Trudeau's regime we have seen the integration of "Hate Speech" laws, as well as gender identification laws, which effectively limit our right to free speech and thought... I could go on & on.

First off - before anything. Of course Canada. I love it - I also like our moose. They are cute. Hush. Now - with the whole America thing... it's a strange mixed blessing that you're so "large and influential" isn't it? As in yes... you get all the cred for being "powerful" and "noticed" etc. etc... unfortunately, that also means the handful of hateful, horrid individuals out there are the loudest and the MOST NOTICED (because they are loud and obnoxious) and they end up painting a horrible picture for everyone else to see... Also, as I've noticed "No no... American, as in individuals, a couple of awesome people you know? Great, beautiful, happy, willing to learn... it's when you get to the whole 'Murica as a mass glob of people' - that's when the bashable things come about.

Is she stupid or maybe NOT gone to University or College?? YESS We Do have debt from school, NO ONE owes 50 grand at 18 because you would be around 22 when you finished a 4 year course and most of the ones that cost that much go 8 years. I know people in Alberta Canada who still havent been able to pay off their 5 figure student loans because they couldnt get a job in the field they went to school for

You dont need to go to university to be smart 🙄 As soon as u decide to go into university and have to pay for it.. your in debt (unless your in a very fortunate position where your parents can pay it all in one) so she is technically right about being in debt at 18, may just not be referred to as a student loan.

Wow talk about misguided first of all health care is not free we pay a lot in taxes in order to have it, we are not better than Americans, we have a lot more things in common than we care to admit, ther are over two million gun owners in Canada yes Canada, so we are not perfect, and clearly you know nothing of the hard work and dedication that people in law enforcement who are of all races and cultures, who protect our countries every second of the day, try looking closer, than just scanning the headlines

While I agree that we're not perfect, I don't think the gun issue is making your point very well. Yes, Canadians have guns. But gun owners are registered, educated on gun safety, and have frequent background checks. Our gun laws aren't perfect either, but our rate of gun violence is nothing but a positive for Canada. @Aunt Messey. I don't believe I specified the type of guns, but regardless that doesn't matter. If you own a gun you own a gun. We can definitely say the culture surrounding them is different though. I have hunted your neck of the woods plenty of times and have also been there for work (wildlife biologist). I have actually been on caribou hunts in Quebec (prior to 2018), black bear in Alberta, and moose in BC. As a matter of fact, I have taken all 3 animals with a homemade bow and arrows. Blaze orange is a law I'm well aware of as we have it in the states, but you may want to consult your game rules for the comment about camo. That isn't accurate.

There's nothing wrong with owning a gun to hunt, or even one for self-protection. But NOBODY needs a freaking assault-style weapon whose only purpose is to slaughter as many people as possible in as short a time as possible. That's all that's at issue in the US. Except for the fact that we'd like to mandate training, testing, licensing and liability insurance --and no-loophole background checks.

It's okay to vocalize things that upset us about the current state of America. People have been criticizing that very thing since we stole it from the Native Americans that were here before us. I predict a ton of downvotes but... I grew up on the border, fam in both countries. Canadians are just as arrogant about their national identity as Muricans, and Canadians love to forget their flaws by pointing out those of the USA. Y'know why Canada has "all that"? Taxes higher than any US citizen has agreed to pay,. It's not like it's free. Or that 100% of Canadians agree with free (fill in your blank here). But don't spoil online rants with reality, right? Now you can argue all day our gun laws need to be amended and you can argue all day that it is too hard to get a green card or citizenship. They just can't be in the same argument because you're comparing a constitutional right and something that isn't. I would like to say it amazes me this has 1M likes/retweets, but I'm just not surprised. People are liking/retweeting her anger and jabs at America, not the accuracy of the content. There are an almost unlimited number of programs to help with finances. #2 Yes, health care is free in Canada for youths but you are aged out of it by the time your appointment comes around. #3 No cost for abortions? Data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information show 10 Canadians die in hospital every day from harm caused by substance use, and 75 per cent of those deaths are related to alcohol. #5 My president is an "Racist orange cheeto"? If you take the comment at face value, she's implying Toronto is free from racism. I don't think there's an area in this world free of racism. I subscribe to many states and provinces DNR, so I receive quarterlies which are newsletters on topics of conservation. I also receive yearlies which are you reg books, updated bag limits, season dates, etc. Funny enough, I received my "2019 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations" a few weeks back. The 2019 artwork for the cover is a small boy wearing Mossy Oak Break Up holding Gadwall and Mallard hens. The second page is a bowhunter wearing what I believe is Kuiu brand camo.

Up until 2012, I had worked for myself (consulting) after leaving the state DNR. I had my own low deductible insurance plan during that time. If I remember correctly it was $90 a month and my deductible was $500. After ACA kicked in, I lost that plan and was forced to either pay $600 a month with the same deductible or go to the bronze plan at $500 a month with $8k out of pocket and a $5k deductible. I work in conditions where I can (and have) get hurt. I took a bite from a copperhead in 2007, so I have to have good insurance. I just don’t think the good of the reforms outweighed the bad. Especially when you’re pushing it as a grand new system.

To be a "truth bomb" the stuff has to be true. 1. Healthcare in Canada is not free. It is universal - meaning everyone has access to health care regardless of their income or net worth. But we definitely pay for it - with our taxes. 2. I graduated from university with over $30k in loans and that was 20 years ago. Current tuition plus residence costs for an undergrad degree is $20000 to $25000 per year - so $50,000 debt is not at all inconceivable. 3. Medicine was free for people under 25 - for about year. Then the new government came in and ended it. Prescriptions are no longer free for people under 25. 4. Ambulances cost money in Canada too. Not as much as in the States but they can be up to $250 or more. 5. Inside of Toronto people are racist too. 6. You can't wear a hijab to work for certain jobs in Quebec - not every job. And you can't wear a Yamaka, turban, or visible cross.

I like Canada, been there a few times. The healthcare is free, but it's as s**t as the NHS is over here. I had to laugh when she said "Kinder Eggs are banned in the US because choking hazard" trying to say that's a bad thing. Weed is also legal at a state level, citizens don't have access to assault rifles (an AR-15 isn't an assault rifle). I don't agree with the stupid who posted about moose and ham but that girl is doing the very same thing before trying to save face at the end. But I will say the maple syrup is on point over there.

To Canadians, I got question about the healthcare.... So I read (a long time ago) that for the whole universal “free” healthcare you don’t really get to make your own medical decisions. Examples: If an old person has health issues and they face something serious that is life and death. The country can decide to not revive or decide to let the person die. So they won’t waste however long they have life using up expensive healthcare by the country. (True or false?) Also, that if someone is pregnant with a baby and they have Down syndrome. The country can decide to abort your baby. Or if you fight to keep it, they will refuse healthcare for said baby. So are these things true? I once asked someone, on another forum, about it. And they immediately stopped responding to me. Because though I think universal health care (is that the right name?) is good. I would fear those things. Any experience Canadians?

I'd say it's pretty well understood worldwide that America totally sucks. Its culture is totally f****d, its healthcare system is barbaric, its measurement system is ancient, its gun-loving, mass shooting society is insane, the average person is morbidly obese., all the actors in TV shows and movies act like smartarse dickheads but are actually as clueless as f**k, everyone screams "RACIST" at the drop of a hat because of guilt over their slavery hundreds of years ago, their letterboxes with the little red flags have not changed in decades and their president is an orange clown.

There is a lot of good in America too, so I am also annoyed by this constant bash fest of our country. Every country on earth has c**p they have to deal with and attempt to fix. The reason we have so much student loan debt is the powers that be refuse to recognize you don't need to put kids in one generic line (math, science, etc). I went the science route and my brother went the HVAC route. I had student loans (paid off now) and he didn't. He makes better money than I do.

I would argue Canada does have more of a gun culture than people would like to admit. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have read 29 percent (conservatively) of Canadians own guns. Granted that is lower than the U.S., but that's still a lot of guns. I think (again correct me if I'm wrong), Canada ranks 3rd in gun ownership.

All of you bashing her, she got some points wrong but overall- how many mass shootings happen at the rate as in usa in other countries. And they're used as a 'right' so people just say 'thoughts & prayers' when s**t happen instead of trying to prevent some of them. Downvote me as much as you want- if you think getting used to it and getting used to seeing people/ kids/ babies being murdered by guns that citizens don't need to own (rifles etc) then- it's a lost cause and more people will be dying and your prayers will do s**t all to help.

Playing devil's advocate here, we don't even know how to define mass shooting in the US. According to some definitions, you have to kill 4-5 people while according to others a drunk uncle can shoot 4 family members in the leg at Christmas dinner. Couple that with the fact that we don't know how other countries define them, it is hard to quantify. But, what about the statistic that says more handguns are used in mass shootings than rifles? I'm of the position we need to be concerned with all gun violence. So playing devils advocate again, why do the nearly 2000 people who have been shot in Chicago this year not get this kind of attention? Is it sensationalism? Is it that it hits us harder emotionally? Is it that young African American males who are largely the victims of gun violence in Chicago don't matter as much? I'm not taking a side here. As I have said I'm politically independent and attempt to come down on the side of common sense. But, if you're going to solve a really complicated problem, you need every piece of information.

Serious faults of Canada: Prime Minister who doesn't know his a*s from a hole in the ground (broken/unfulfilled electoral promises, lack of transparency, Liberal Party dissension, cultural appropriation...); Open door immigration policy (which is causing a widespread loss of Canadian identity); Public Healthcare ("free" healthcare does not exist - we pay for it with higher taxes. Often times those who require life saving surgeries/treatments are left waiting for months or years due to overcrowding at hospitals, lack of medical professionals, etc.); Electoral system - our method of indirect voting is ineffective. We are essentially required to vote for our local Member of Parliament in order to elect a new Prime Minister (but what if you can't stand your local MLA? Tough s**t.); CENSORSHIP - Under Trudeau's regime we have seen the integration of "Hate Speech" laws, as well as gender identification laws, which effectively limit our right to free speech and thought... I could go on & on.

Now - with the whole America thing... it's a strange mixed blessing that you're so "large and influential" isn't it? As in yes... you get all the cred for being "powerful" and "noticed" etc. etc... unfortunately, that also means the handful of hateful, horrid individuals out there are the loudest and the MOST NOTICED (because they are loud and obnoxious) and they end up painting a horrible picture for everyone else to see... YESS We Do have debt from school, NO ONE owes 50 grand at 18 because you would be around 22 when you finished a 4 year course and most of the ones that cost that much go 8 years. I know people in Alberta Canada who still havent been able to pay off their 5 figure student loans because they couldnt get a job in the field they went to school for

You dont need to go to university to be smart 🙄 As soon as u decide to go into university and have to pay for it.. your in debt (unless your in a very fortunate position where your parents can pay it all in one) so she is technically right about being in debt at 18, may just not be referred to as a student loan.

While I agree that we're not perfect, I don't think the gun issue is making your point very well. Yes, Canadians have guns. But gun owners are registered, educated on gun safety, and have frequent background checks. Our gun laws aren't perfect either, but our rate of gun violence is nothing but a positive for Canada. @Aunt Messey. I don't believe I specified the type of guns, but regardless that doesn't matter. If you own a gun you own a gun. We can definitely say the culture surrounding them is different though. I have hunted your neck of the woods plenty of times and have also been there for work (wildlife biologist). I have actually been on caribou hunts in Quebec (prior to 2018), black bear in Alberta, and moose in BC. As a matter of fact, I have taken all 3 animals with a homemade bow and arrows. Blaze orange is a law I'm well aware of as we have it in the states, but you may want to consult your game rules for the comment about camo. That isn't accurate.

There's nothing wrong with owning a gun to hunt, or even one for self-protection. But NOBODY needs a freaking assault-style weapon whose only purpose is to slaughter as many people as possible in as short a time as possible. That's all that's at issue in the US. Except for the fact that we'd like to mandate training, testing, licensing and liability insurance --and no-loophole background checks.

It's okay to vocalize things that upset us about the current state of America. People have been criticizing that very thing since we stole it from the Native Americans that were here before us. Canadians are just as arrogant about their national identity as Muricans, and Canadians love to forget their flaws by pointing out those of the USA. Y'know why Canada has "all that"? Taxes higher than any US citizen has agreed to pay,. It's not like it's free. Or that 100% of Canadians agree with free (fill in your blank here). But don't spoil online rants with reality, right? Now you can argue all day our gun laws need to be amended and you can argue all day that it is too hard to get a green card or citizenship. They just can't be in the same argument because you're comparing a constitutional right and something that isn't. I would like to say it amazes me this has 1M likes/retweets, but I'm just not surprised. People are liking/retweeting her anger and jabs at America, not the accuracy of the content. That's the point we're at. We like something based on how bad it makes the other side look instead of the level of truth within the statement.

There are an almost unlimited number of programs to help with finances. #2 Yes, health care is free in Canada for youths but you are aged out of it by the time your appointment comes around. #3 No cost for abortions? If I've learned anything in this life it's that there is absolutely a price for everything and I'm not talking money. #4 Marijuana is legal and the drinking age is 19. Data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information show 10 Canadians die in hospital every day from harm caused by substance use, and 75 per cent of those deaths are related to alcohol. #5 My president is an "Racist orange cheeto"? She seems to be making a lot of statements she isn't qualified to make. One that stuck out to me was her comment about "outside of Toronto people are racist." If you take the comment at face value, she's implying Toronto is free from racism. I don't think there's an area in this world free of racism. I'm of the opinion that it hurts your credibility when you make outlandish statements when trying to prove a point.

@Aunt Messy, I don't want to go back and forth all day on this, but again you need to review your regs book for Alberta. I subscribe to many states and provinces DNR, so I receive quarterlies which are newsletters on topics of conservation. I also receive yearlies which are you reg books, updated bag limits, season dates, etc. Funny enough, I received my "2019 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations" a few weeks back. The 2019 artwork for the cover is a small boy wearing Mossy Oak Break Up holding Gadwall and Mallard hens. The second page is a bowhunter wearing what I believe is Kuiu brand camo.

Up until 2012, I had worked for myself (consulting) after leaving the state DNR. I had my own low deductible insurance plan during that time. If I remember correctly it was $90 a month and my deductible was $500. After ACA kicked in, I lost that plan and was forced to either pay $600 a month with the same deductible or go to the bronze plan at $500 a month with $8k out of pocket and a $5k deductible. I work in conditions where I can (and have) get hurt. I took a bite from a copperhead in 2007, so I have to have good insurance. I just don’t think the good of the reforms outweighed the bad. Especially when you’re pushing it as a grand new system.

To be a "truth bomb" the stuff has to be true. 1. Healthcare in Canada is not free. It is universal - meaning everyone has access to health care regardless of their income or net worth. But we definitely pay for it - with our taxes. 2. I graduated from university with over $30k in loans and that was 20 years ago. Current tuition plus residence costs for an undergrad degree is $20000 to $25000 per year - so $50,000 debt is not at all inconceivable. 3. Medicine was free for people under 25 - for about year. Then the new government came in and ended it. Prescriptions are no longer free for people under 25. 4. Ambulances cost money in Canada too. Not as much as in the States but they can be up to $250 or more. 5. Inside of Toronto people are racist too. 6. You can't wear a hijab to work for certain jobs in Quebec - not every job. And you can't wear a Yamaka, turban, or visible cross.

I like Canada, been there a few times. The healthcare is free, but it's as s**t as the NHS is over here. I had to laugh when she said "Kinder Eggs are banned in the US because choking hazard" trying to say that's a bad thing. Weed is also legal at a state level, citizens don't have access to assault rifles (an AR-15 isn't an assault rifle). I don't agree with the stupid who posted about moose and ham but that girl is doing the very same thing before trying to save face at the end. But I will say the maple syrup is on point over there.

To Canadians, I got question about the healthcare.... So I read (a long time ago) that for the whole universal “free” healthcare you don’t really get to make your own medical decisions. Examples: If an old person has health issues and they face something serious that is life and death. The country can decide to not revive or decide to let the person die. So they won’t waste however long they have life using up expensive healthcare by the country. (True or false?) Also, that if someone is pregnant with a baby and they have Down syndrome. The country can decide to abort your baby. Or if you fight to keep it, they will refuse healthcare for said baby. So are these things true? I once asked someone, on another forum, about it. And they immediately stopped responding to me. Because though I think universal health care (is that the right name?) is good. I would fear those things. Any experience Canadians?

I'd say it's pretty well understood worldwide that America totally sucks. Its culture is totally f****d, its healthcare system is barbaric, its measurement system is ancient, its gun-loving, mass shooting society is insane, the average person is morbidly obese., all the actors in TV shows and movies act like smartarse dickheads but are actually as clueless as f**k, everyone screams "RACIST" at the drop of a hat because of guilt over their slavery hundreds of years ago, their letterboxes with the little red flags have not changed in decades and their president is an orange clown.

There is a lot of good in America too, so I am also annoyed by this constant bash fest of our country. Every country on earth has c**p they have to deal with and attempt to fix. The reason we have so much student loan debt is the powers that be refuse to recognize you don't need to put kids in one generic line (math, science, etc). I went the science route and my brother went the HVAC route. I had student loans (paid off now) and he didn't. He makes better money than I do.

I would argue Canada does have more of a gun culture than people would like to admit. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have read 29 percent (conservatively) of Canadians own guns. Granted that is lower than the U.S., but that's still a lot of guns. I think (again correct me if I'm wrong), Canada ranks 3rd in gun ownership.

All of you bashing her, she got some points wrong but overall- how many mass shootings happen at the rate as in usa in other countries. And they're used as a 'right' so people just say 'thoughts & prayers' when s**t happen instead of trying to prevent some of them. Downvote me as much as you want- if you think getting used to it and getting used to seeing people/ kids/ babies being murdered by guns that citizens don't need to own (rifles etc) then- it's a lost cause and more people will be dying and your prayers will do s**t all to help.

Playing devil's advocate here, we don't even know how to define mass shooting in the US. According to some definitions, you have to kill 4-5 people while according to others a drunk uncle can shoot 4 family members in the leg at Christmas dinner. Couple that with the fact that we don't know how other countries define them, it is hard to quantify. But, what about the statistic that says more handguns are used in mass shootings than rifles? I'm of the position we need to be concerned with all gun violence. So playing devils advocate again, why do the nearly 2000 people who have been shot in Chicago this year not get this kind of attention? Is it sensationalism? Is it that it hits us harder emotionally? Is it that young African American males who are largely the victims of gun violence in Chicago don't matter as much? I'm not taking a side here. As I have said I'm politically independent and attempt to come down on the side of common sense. But, if you're going to solve a really complicated problem, you need every piece of information.
