If you had to think of one topic that heavily divides the internet, it would probably be furries. The furry community is extremely misunderstood. Some people dislike it, others don’t mind, and the folks who are furries are obviously heavily invested.

In this story, a woman felt uncomfortable being seen at her favorite Renaissance fair with her teen sister, who insisted on wearing a furry suit. This led to a clash between the sisters, and even netizens were divided about who was in the right.

More info: Reddit

12-year-old girl finds it extremely unfair when elder sister refuses to take her to Renaissance fair just because she wants to wear a neon pink furry suit

The 25-year-old poster has been attending her town’s annual Renaissance fair since she was 16, when her siblings turned 13, she took them along too

This year, her 12-year-old sister Kiara wanted to attend and wear a furry suit, but the poster told her RenFair wasn’t the place for such an outfit, and her sibling initially agreed

Later on, Kiara got permission from their mother to wear a neon pink furry suit, but the poster told her if she was going to wear that outfit, she wouldn’t take Kiara to the event

Kiara was upset by the decision and felt that it was unfair, she tried complaining to their mother about the issue

It might seem like quite a niche hobby, but you’ll be surprised to know that there are around 1-2 million furries worldwide. Many community members develop a ‘fursona,’ which is their unique avatar. Usually, they also create a fursuit to match this fursona, which helps bring their identity to life at gatherings and events.

In today’s day and age, more people are interested in being a furry. This is due to the large amount of information about the community that’s available on social media. As more furry conventions and events spring up, people learn about it and want to join in as well. The poster explained how her sister became interested in this hobby. She said that Kara was originally into “therian stuff” (which is when someone identifies as a non-human), and she used to wear fake ears and a tail to school.

Some commenters were concerned about why a 12-year-old would be interested in being a furry. That’s because folks often have a misconception that all furries use this hobby as a way to engage in adult activities. However, Furscience research has found that for many people, being a furry is actually “a means of self-expression or a description of who they are.”

It is also an enjoyable activity or hobby for many folks who use their fursona to make new friends and become a part of a large and creative community. That’s also why around 5-10% of the fandom often continue this interest well into their 40s, 50s, and 60s. So, although some folks might be furries for erotic reasons, most members are in it to make friends and have fun.

Image credits: daggerquill (not the actual photo)

The 12-year-old girl, Kiara, had recently developed a passion for making furry suits and masks. But when she actually wanted to wear her fursuit out in public, her elder sister was wary of the idea. This upset her; she felt it was unfair that only her costume idea was rejected. However, the poster told commenters that she actually wasn’t embarrassed by her sister’s outfit.

She said: “My main concern is with the heat. I don’t want to be responsible for that. Fitting in is also part of my concern. A lot of kids from her school are going to be there and she already gets made fun of at school for wearing a tail and ears to school. I encouraged her to wear the suit when we go to Comic Con next year, but wearing it here isn’t a good idea.”

It’s understandable that the poster wanted to protect her sister from people’s judgment, but what she didn’t realize was that she hurt Kiara’s feelings in the process. Although understanding the furry community can be difficult for parents or adults, they have to remember that the kid’s passion or hobby is at stake. The best way to react to a child or young person wanting to be a furry is to build a safe environment for them to express themselves. The adult can then share their concerns, which leads to a more constructive discussion.

All in all, furries are quite a misunderstood group, and it’s possible that those same stereotypes played a role in why Kiara wasn’t allowed to wear her costume. The discussion was so fascinating that the post got 3.2k comments from people who were divided on whose side to take.

Folks who regularly attend Renaissance fairs mentioned that nobody would bat an eyelid at a furry being there, while others applauded the sister for putting her foot down and looking out for her sister even if it was a difficult decision. Whose side are you on?

The comments section was flooded with questions, concerns, and many quips about furries

' First '. It's July where I live right now. I live in Florida and it's currently 92 degrees. We have an annual Renfaire here as well. Your decision is a very good decision. There's a time and a place for everything. That is not the place for a furry suit. If she wore it,as a child and you being responsible for her, your trip there would be very short. She would not last very long in the heat. She'd be complaining about the heat, then because she's already stubborn she'd probably purposely keep the suit on out of spite and end up making your trip a very short one because she would end up with heat stroke ,dehydration, and a trip to the hospital. Your trip will be ruined. She isn't willing to compromise at all,so,she should not be going at all. The suit is right for Comic Con. The suit is not right for a Renfaire. She cannot have your mother make you take her anywhere despite her best efforts. She forgets she's a child and you are adults and nobody can make an adult do anything. It's your car , your trip and your rules. Like it or not that's the way it is. This 12yr old doesn't seem mature enough to understand that. I know her sister was 13 when she went but her sister followed the rules. The 12 yr old refuses to grasp the concept and is acting immature and won't see reason. She's not ready to go to this event unlike her sister was. You're NTA.

I wore a partial fursuit (head, paws, tail) to an INDOOR event in Southern California. It was ATROCIOUSLY hot. I kept having to “gape” my mouth open (the head had a moving jaw) to get more air. I was wearing a dress (the costume was Yuki from the Wolf Children anime for those who wish to google) and I kept “flapping” the hem to cool myself off. Fursuits are no joke. You can easily overheat in just a partial suit. Fullsuits can kill you with heatstroke. Most fursuiters in the furry community know they can only wear their suits for SHORT periods of time (15-30 min) unless they have cooling BUILT INTO the suit. I’m all for little sis expressing herself and being a furry, but I’m a longtime furry who has been to plenty of cons in costume and it’s BRUTAL.

It's fine for her to enjoy wearing a fur suit, but a ren fair isn't the right place. I go a lot and get overheated in a shift, stays, and petticoat. Your sister can try and go, with someone else who will be driving her home after about fifteen minutes. NTA, you need to be able to enjoy the ren fair too!

12 year olds have not lived long enough to understand real life experiences. She just wants to attend a function wearing a cute outfit that she thinks everyone is going to notice her in. She's not mature enough to think about her health and the dangers of wearing inappropriate clothing that could cause heat related injuries. Her mother is responsible for her safety and should put her foot down. Her decision is the one that this minor child should be held to. Ignorance is not bliss where a child's wellbeing is at stake.

This is simple: Child is acting just like a CHILD. If the child does not want to wear something appropriate, than the child stays home. End of discussion. Side note: if she does not wish to be labeled a weirdo, she should reserve the furry costume for Halloween or some other costume related event.

I happen to live where there's a big anthrocon. It was this past weekend. It is insanely hot right now. Aside from the parade, I saw more partial/pared back suits than ever. There were also lots of people wearing "normal" clothes and their name tag and just carrying their costume heads. This heat is serious and full fur suits just aren't safe for more than a few minutes at a time.

Yes! Many moons ago I went to a small furry con (that no longer exists/happens, AFAIK) locally where I live in SoCal. It was summer. I wore a Lakota hat that I'd made (seen in the attached pic), fur sleeves/paws, and a tail. Even THAT was too hot and I ended up removing the armsleeves entirely XD Even just wearing the hat was brutal and I took it off after a while XD lakota_hat...699bc0.jpg lakota_hat_2-668cdae699bc0.jpg

The only AH here is the mother. Unless I misread, the little sister was good with the new plan, with big sisters helping her with the new costume, until mom threw a wrench in the works telling her she could wear the pink furry suit.

Aside from all the comments about the heat, this is the time and age to teach her where clothing should be appropriate to the occasion, and that other people should be taken into consideration as well.. It will also teach her that trying to control other people does not usually end well. It's a life lesson that hopefully she will learn.

Hey mom, since you said she could wear the furry costume, YOU take her to the renfair! And YOU deal with the aftermath of her becoming very ill from the heat 🥵. After years of attending Renfairs with my daughter, I know from personal experience these are NOT the time or place for this type of costume. Don't let a pushy 12 year old dictate to anyone, especially her adult siblings. Sister is right about her wearing this furry costume at a Cosplay event where it's more appropriate. Mom and 12 year old ATH. Sister should stand her ground.

Just have mom sign and date a disclaimer saying that she has been advised that a fursuit will be too hot for the event, but is insisting that her child be allowed to wear it anyway. And OP will not be legally nor financially responsible for any consequences stemming from that decision, including hospitalization, permanent brain damage, or death. Maybe that'll get the mom to see how serious this is. If not, OP is covered. Honestly, this sounds like mom just doesn't want to be the bad guy who has to tell the child daughter no, so she's letting that responsibility fall upon the adult daughter.

While the folks that run and attend ren faires are among the most open minded people out there, there's still a time & place for things. A pink furry suit just doesn't fit or belong at all at a ren faire. That being said, if she did go and wear it, I imagine the worst reaction would just be quiet judgement and essentially ignoring her as an outlier for the day.

My Medieval Faire costume is already abominably hot in the summer (jerkin, trews, leather brigandine, knee-high boots, & cloak). I can't imagine how bad a full fursuit would be.

Easy solution. Simply tell your 12 yr old sister, since she can't dress appropriately for the Ren fair she is obviously not mature enough to go this year. Maybe next year, she'll be old enough to understand and have an appropriate costume. It is not a Furry con, comic con, etc. Problem solved. Done.

Being a furry in this day and age especially comes with a lot of negative connotations that a minor isn't able to fully understand. It's disarming because a lot of fursuits look cute, but if you do a modicum of research, there are a lot of disingenuous predators out there wearing a cute little fox costume. I say this as someone who grew up on the Internet and thought it looked kind of fun, until I got older and saw what humans donning fursuits are capable of. Not all furries, but enough for me to consider it an adult activity, secondary to the issue of overheating. But no I don't know why mom isn't using logic regarding the heat, even if she doesn't grasp the potential implications of being a furry.

Why is a 12 year-old dictating what she will and won't wear -- and why isn't Mom being the parent here? OP has valid health/safety concerns, and the siblings have offered compromises and generously offered to help with a more appropriate costume, but littlest sister is using her new found power as her hill to die on. Tell her NO, Mom - Precious can accommodate or stay home.

This is where you put your foot down and tell her that Maddy and Sam didnt get to go till they were 13!!!!! So now she can't go till next year since she just turned 12. That was your first mistake. If she asked you should have said sorry I won't take you with us till your 13 just like our siblings. Stop coddling her just cause she's "the baby" of the family. That's why she has such an entitled attitude. And Mom needs to STOP saying yes to everything the little princess wants. Your raising a monster!

I've done cosplay, I've sewn sooo many costumes for friends....one of them was a revisited version of Ursula, think long gown with a corset and yards and yards of petticoat. I had BIG reservations but my friend WANTED that. She loooved it 😍, she felt stuuuuUUUUUUnning in it 😍(corsets tend to do that to your confidence 😘) she asked me to help her out of it after two hours because she was having a stroke 😑 (she lasted that long because she was stubborn and folded when it was either changing or going to the hospital)....if you want to do a cosplay, kiddoes, and your seamstress tells you it's a bad idea......it usually IS!

I don´t have anything against furries, quite the opposite actually, but OP is right. There are times and places to wear a fursuit. And a NEON-PINK one at a ren fair is clearly one of the times where it is inappropriate, no matter the temperature.

Tell 12 year old to grow up. Furries are not a public thing and should be kept private, definitely not in schools, where it should be harshly banned and yes comic con is a good place for that type of outfit. At 80+ heat she will last 10 minutes and then passout.

I've worn a full fur costume in the northeast in July. (Camp mascot) NOT FUN! I was courting heat stroke. Furrys are more a comic con thing than a Renn Faire. I like the faun/satyr/fairy/centaur ideas for a Renn Faire... not totally out of place with the mystic side of the community. She needs to understand the risk to her health, and the mind-set of the event.

I agree with this young woman’s decision to not take her sister in a potentially dangerous costume considering the heat. She is being incredibly responsible. And I would be embarrassed for her to not be in keeping with the theme; isn’t that the point of the event? Additionally, there is nothing wrong with teaching her that there are appropriate places and times to wear certain outfits. This is a huge problem. Parents are afraid to say “no” for fear of stifling their kids. No way my kid would be wearing fake ears and a tail to school! Why would you allow your child to do that and open themselves up to ridicule and torcher! Your job is to protect them! That to me is the most horrible part of this whole story. She has been taught that it doesn’t matter when it most certainly does! Mom created this mess, Mom can take her and will be paying for her years of therapy later.

where i live right now, it's 12:20 pm and about 103 degrees(it's going to be 112 later today). so if someone wore a fur suit around here, they will die from the heat in 3 minutes. according to the post, the temperature is around the 80s which will still be hot, so no fur suit is the best option if you dont want heat stroke

Okay, so I am asking for my own clarification here: I have seen furry suits at our local Renfaire and I am a bit confused as to why people wear them to this type of event. I get that it's a costume, but it is confusing to me to see them there. It's as out of place to me as if someone dressed up as Iron Man with a head-to-toe power suit. Yes, it would be cool, but I don't see a connection between the costume and Renaissance. So I'm not judging when I ask: why? Is it just because it's a costume opportunity and there's not a ton for furries?

It would depend on what the Furry outfit is. If its more appropriate for the faire, (and heat) then that would be fine, however it sounds like its neither.

honestly, the part about the temperature and it being to hot is understandable, but possibly instead of telling her she can't wear it at all, suggest wearing just a partial (Head, paws and tail) instead of the full :) she worked hard to make that and would love to show it off, the renaissance festival is just the place.

I've been in hotter environments with military uniforms and battle gear. It's miserable. I could imagine a furry suit with it being that warm out. That's a one way ticket to a heat injury. It's common for soldiers to have a heat casualty. I would put my foot down. Either she changes or she doesn't go. Heat is no joke. This is aside from the fact that the costume doesn't fit in with the theme of the event and may be taken the wrong way. NTA.

She sounds like a spoiled brat who is use to getting her way by whining to her mom. NTA! Putting the temperature aside, there was an agreement of what the costumes would be. She needs a strong lesson in keeping your word. It sounds like she is too immature. Stand your ground. You are an adult, and have granted her the opportunity to a year earlier than your other siblings. She doesn’t seem to appreciate things she receives. Your mother seems to be a pushover for the baby of the family. Don’t you be. The furry costume is inappropriate for several reason. You’re an adult, now. Make an adult decision. If she goes in the furry costume, and has a heat related problem, she ruins everyone’s enjoyment. Sounds like she has some growing up to do.

A renfair is not a place for furries theres a reason why furry con. Was made so you don't go to other peoplestype of thing and try to make it a furry event in which nobody will like you have furry con which is like hosted almost everyday go there but dont make other places that aren't associated with furries apart of that

I have seen full fursuits and full leather armor with fursuit heads, gloves, and tails, all in 80+° weather. If it were my sibling, I would bring an extra outfit and let her wear the fursuit til she melted. But I understand caution. 12 year olds are damn stubborn and don't always recognize the signs of heat exhaustion

She is 12. To her, wearing that pink furry suit probably feels "cool". Pick your battles. Let her wear the dang suit. She'll quickly learn why you told her it's inappropriate. Life lesson learned. And to they poster who called the CHILD a "delusional little s**t.," maybe grow up. Surely you have made stupid decisions in your lifetime, and I'm willing to bet at least one life choice you've made was or will be worse than wearing a furry costume to a Renaissance faire. Lol

As someone who attends ren faires every year for most of its run, and have for years. And someone with many connections in the furry world. This whole approach is wrong, Ive seen more people than I can count misjudge the heat, both at faires and at cons wearing suits. And thats the approach that should be taken, give her advice and find a common ground. Not tell her to p*ss off. And I totally get the discomfort of how other people see who you're with, I got over that ages ago but I totally relate. Seems like no one wants to listen to each other and its sad.

Nope. Even with the rationalized edit, she's still the a*****e. By 25 you're supposed to be mature enough to stop worrying about "what people will think"...especially when it comes to a 12 year old sister. She needs to grow up. As for the heat, that's a valid concern that 1) Could be worked around and 2) Was absolutely a rationalized afterthought to excuse the fact that she was embarrassed.

Fursuits aren't a "fetish". The vast majority of furries aren't furries for the sexual/sexualized aspects. Most of us are furries because we can relate to animals/characteristics of animals and prefer to do so rather than be human.

I don't really understand the people who say that it is inappropriate. It's not quite the vibe of such an event, but aren't they meant to be fun? Don't take it too seriously. I'm from Munich, and you have no idea how many weird custumes I have seen at the Oktoberfest (an event that is NOT a costume party at all). So what? The only valid argument is really the heat.

To me, the heat is the main argument. But if heat was not an issue, I still think a neon pink fur suit is not appropriate renfair attire as it doesn't go with the theme. It also wouldn't fit at any historical reenactment events, or sci-fi (unless it's a pink alien) and such. At a comic con, super hero, anime (stretch, but won't break the vibe) or furry event, sure. Octoberfest, I'm not sure of the general vibe, but I'm guessing most costumes have to do with traditional German garb, harvest, drinking, all hallows eve (Halloween) and possibly some non-pagan's idea of pagan outfits. Not fairies, not furries. Unless it is something you wear every day, every where, because it's part of your identity, your outfit should fit the vibe of the event.

Yta for even bothering to list all the superficial reasons. She cant wear what she wants because she will have a heat stroke, but the fact that you mentioned that as an aside to superficial concerns- a hole. If it weren't for the heat no one cares I a kid wears somthing weird to ren faire off brand or not.

She cant wear fur for safety reasons, ie heat stroke. But that doesn't seem to be the older siblings main concern so kind of an a*****e for caring more about being embarrassed. If it weren't for the heat issue then let her be weird and wear what she wants. So yea I think the sibling is being an a hole for caring about appearance sake. No one is going to care if a kid wears aomthing weird to ren faire. But that being said its a moot point because she cant wear it for safety reasons. But that should be the only reason not the other superficial reasons

a 12 year old that's new to fursuiting absolutely has no idea how hot it can get in there and may push herself to heatstroke if she's feeling stubborn about it ("I don't want to admit my brother was right") or she may even become embarrassed if it's really how he says it is (small to the point that the only furry type outfits seen there are fantasy creatures) he's literally entirely okay with taking her in a fursuit to a con, somewhere where there's at least air-conditioning and she'll fit in. I understand it doesn't feel great to feel like you're being shamed, especially when your community is the laughingstock of the internet, but he isn't shaming her for this.

I wore a Lakota hat that I'd made (seen in the attached pic), fur sleeves/paws, and a tail.

I had BIG reservations but my friend WANTED that.

Who gets to carry the costume when she changes? Carrying it is almost as bad as wearing it.

Why is your mum allowing your 12 year old sister to dabble in fetish?

How do you possibly think you're NTA? YTA, YTA, YTA! Tons of fursuiters are present at renfaires, you need to get out more lol. As for the heat, she can just take it off when it's too much, no one is naked under those things you dolt. That's what I do when it gets to be too much. I also carry plenty of water for myself. YTA

a 12 year old that's new to fursuiting absolutely has no idea how hot it can get in there and may push herself to heatstroke if she's feeling stubborn about it ("I don't want to admit my brother was right") or she may even become embarrassed if it's really how he says it is (small to the point that the only furry type outfits seen there are fantasy creatures) he's literally entirely okay with taking her in a fursuit to a con, somewhere where there's at least air-conditioning and she'll fit in. I understand it doesn't feel great to feel like you're being shamed, especially when your community is the laughingstock of the internet, but he isn't shaming her for this.
